If you have finished licensed horror games and want a strong next step, choose by the kind of fear you enjoy rather than by franchise similarity. Dead Space (2023) is the safest first recommendation for action-horror fans; Alien: Isolation is the best switch to stealth and pursuit; SOMA and Amnesia: The Dark Descent put atmosphere, ideas and puzzles ahead of firepower; and Outlast 2 delivers the most helpless flee-and-hide experience.
How to choose your next horror game
Licensed horror games often provide a familiar character, film universe or established monster. Original horror games remove that safety net. Their settings, rules and threats are created for the game itself, so the most useful way to choose is to match the design of the fear you want next.
Ask yourself what you liked in your last game. Did you enjoy managing ammunition and healing items, learning an enemy’s attack pattern, and fighting back? Choose Dead Space (2023). Did the best moments come from hearing something nearby while you searched for a hiding place? Try Alien: Isolation. If the appeal was uncertainty, disturbing ideas and a story that keeps changing what you think is real, SOMA is the stronger fit. For environmental puzzles and vulnerability without a conventional combat loop, choose Amnesia: The Dark Descent. If you want a camera, a sprint and almost no ability to resist the threat, choose Outlast 2.
This is a recommendation by experience profile, not a sales ranking. The sources available for these games describe their genres and editorial standing, but they do not establish a universal best game, completion-time leaderboard or review-score order. Your tolerance for repeated chases, graphic material, slow pacing and limited combat should decide the final choice.

Quick comparison
| Game | Best for | Why it follows licensed horror well | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dead Space (2023) | Combat and resource pressure | A self-contained science-fiction survival-horror world with a clear third-person action loop. Electronic Arts classifies it as “Horror Survival” and describes the remake as faithful to the original vision. | It is more combat-forward than pure stealth horror. |
| Alien: Isolation | Stealth and sustained pursuit | A first-person survival-horror game built around being hunted in a single-player story. | Its deliberately slow, stressful sections can make failure repeat stealth progress. |
| SOMA | Psychological and philosophical science fiction | Ideas and atmosphere carry the fear, making it a sharp change from licensed monster action. | It offers less of a conventional combat-driven payoff. |
| Amnesia: The Dark Descent | Hiding, puzzles and vulnerability | It asks you to solve spaces and manage exposure while avoiding direct fights. | Players who want regular action may find its limited direct combat frustrating. |
| Outlast 2 | First-person helplessness | A camera-based flee-and-hide structure for players who prefer escape to combat. | High-intensity chases and graphic content are not suitable for every player. |
1. Dead Space (2023): the best bridge from licensed action horror
Why start here
Dead Space (2023) is the safest first move when your favorite licensed horror games mixed scares with a reliable action system. You get a self-contained science-fiction setting rather than another adaptation, but the moment-to-moment structure remains legible: explore, assess danger, spend resources carefully and decide when fighting is worth the cost. That combination makes it an accessible transition for someone who is not ready to give up combat.
Electronic Arts’ current product page labels the game “Horror Survival” and describes the remake as faithful to the original vision. Those labels are useful because they set the right expectation: this is survival horror with a substantial action component, not a pure hiding simulator. The third-person viewpoint also gives you more spatial information than a first-person chase game, which can make the first step away from licensed horror less disorienting.
What kind of fear it emphasizes
The pressure comes from making limited resources matter while threats can appear in spaces you thought were safe. The fear is therefore partly tactical. You are not only asking “What is that sound?” but also “Can I afford to spend ammunition now, or will I need it later?” That decision loop is the closest match in this group for players who liked planning encounters in a licensed action-horror title.

- Choose it first if you want a clear combat loop and a science-fiction setting.
- Choose it if the idea of abandoning weapons entirely sounds less exciting than learning a new kind of enemy encounter.
- Choose it if you want a standalone story rather than a game that assumes knowledge of a film or television continuity.
Who should skip it for now
Players seeking sustained evasion, philosophical uncertainty or near-total helplessness should move to Alien: Isolation, SOMA or Outlast 2 instead. Dead Space’s defining trade-off is that its fear is more combat-forward than stealth horror. That does not make it less frightening; it means the game asks you to manage danger through action as well as avoidance.
Buying and platform checks
Platform and edition availability can change. Electronic Arts provides current purchase routes, but a store page does not guarantee that a particular physical edition is in stock in your region. If you are shopping for a console copy, search for the exact phrase “Dead Space (2023) PS5”, then confirm the platform, edition, region and seller before paying. Treat that phrase as a way to identify the remake, not as proof that every listing is the same product.
2. Alien: Isolation: when the threat should hunt you
Why it is the best stealth follow-up
Alien: Isolation changes the question from “How do I defeat this enemy?” to “How do I remain undiscovered long enough to reach the next safe position?” HP’s current PC horror guide describes it as a 2014 first-person survival-horror game, and a PlayStation horror editorial presents it as a single-player horror story. Those descriptions capture the central shift: the game is built around being hunted.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.

That makes it a particularly effective follow-up to a licensed game when you want an original experience that still understands the value of a recognizable horror premise. You are not relying on a familiar film plot here; the tension comes from the rules of pursuit, the soundscape and your own route through the environment.

What the skill test feels like
Progress depends on observation, timing and restraint. Moving quickly can expose you; moving too slowly can leave you trapped. You learn to read the space, listen for danger and decide whether to hide, redirect the threat or wait. The result is a sustained stress curve rather than a series of short combat victories.
The pacing trade-off
Alien: Isolation is deliberately slow and stressful. Failure can send you back through stealth sections, so the cost of a mistake is not merely a lost health segment. If you dislike repeating a route after an alert or prefer frequent power-fantasy moments, that design may feel punishing. Conversely, if the idea of a single mistake undoing careful preparation is what makes horror exciting, the repetition reinforces the tension.
Choose it when
- You want first-person immersion and a threat that remains dangerous for long stretches.
- You prefer evasion, hiding and route planning to regular gunfights.
- You are comfortable with a slower pace and the possibility of replaying a stealth section after failure.
3. SOMA: psychological science fiction for readers who want ideas to scare them
What makes it different
SOMA belongs on this list for a different reason. Its appeal is not primarily a new combat system or a stronger chase sequence; it is the way psychological and philosophical questions become part of the horror. HP includes SOMA among notable PC horror games, and that placement reflects its atmosphere-first identity.
If licensed horror has trained you to expect a known monster, recognizable setting or clear explanation, SOMA offers a useful reset. The fear can come from uncertainty about identity, consciousness, memory and the consequences of technological choices. You are invited to think about what is happening, not just react to it.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How to approach it
Go in expecting the story and environment to carry more weight than a conventional combat loop. Explore carefully, read and listen when the game gives you material, and allow unanswered questions to remain unresolved for a while. Trying to force every scene into a familiar action-horror pattern can make the experience feel slower than it is meant to be.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The trade-off
SOMA offers less of a conventional combat-driven payoff. Players who measure progress by upgraded weapons, cleared rooms or increasingly powerful attacks may find that its rewards are more interpretive. Its strength is the after-effect: the way an idea or discovery changes the meaning of an earlier scene.
Choose it when
- You want science fiction that treats the premise as a source of philosophical unease.
- You prefer atmosphere, narrative questions and psychological uncertainty to repeated firefights.
- You are willing to let the game control the pace instead of demanding immediate explanations.
4. Amnesia: The Dark Descent: puzzles and vulnerability without direct fights
Why it remains a useful next step
Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a foundational choice for players who want to solve spaces while avoiding direct confrontation. HP and GamesRadar both include Amnesia in horror selections, and its reputation comes from the way it makes ordinary movement, exploration and problem solving feel unsafe.
The game is a strong answer to the question “What should I play after a licensed horror game if I want less combat?” Instead of asking you to master an arsenal, it asks you to understand a location, notice environmental clues and decide when exposure is too risky. The vulnerability is mechanical: your options narrow when the threat is near.

How the puzzle-and-evasion loop works
Approach each area as a problem to read rather than a room to clear. Look for the route forward, identify places that could conceal you and avoid treating every object as a weapon. The satisfaction comes from connecting environmental information and making it through a dangerous space with limited ability to fight back.
Who may bounce off it
Limited direct combat can frustrate action-oriented players. If your favorite licensed games were built around escalating weapons and set-piece battles, Amnesia’s restraint may initially feel like a lack of options. Give it a chance only if the appeal of being outmatched sounds interesting; the absence of a conventional fight is the point, not a missing feature.
Choose it when
- You want hiding and puzzles to be the main verbs.
- You prefer a vulnerable protagonist to a heavily armed one.
- You enjoy learning a space and solving its hazards under pressure.
5. Outlast 2: the most helpless first-person option
Why choose a camera instead of a weapon
Outlast 2 is the clearest choice when you want first-person flight and hiding with almost no sense that you can overpower the threat. PlayStation and HP include Outlast entries in their horror recommendations, and the game’s identity is easy to summarize: you use a camera, run when necessary and look for ways to stay alive rather than win a fight.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
That structure can feel radically different after licensed horror built around weapons or familiar heroes. The camera is not a replacement gun. It is a tool for seeing, documenting and navigating while danger remains present. The result is a more exposed form of fear because your response is usually to escape, conceal yourself or endure a chase.

Intensity and content warning
Outlast 2 uses high-intensity chase design and graphic content. Those elements are central to its effect, not optional decoration, so consider your tolerance before choosing it as a late-night follow-up. If repeated pursuit sequences or explicit imagery make horror unpleasant rather than exciting, SOMA or Amnesia may provide a better transition.
Choose it when
- You want the strongest possible shift from combat to helplessness.
- You enjoy first-person movement, fleeing and hiding more than solving elaborate combat encounters.
- You are comfortable with graphic material and chase-heavy pacing.
A practical play order for different players
If you want the smoothest transition
- Start with Dead Space (2023) to retain a familiar action-horror rhythm while moving into an original science-fiction world.
- Move to Alien: Isolation when you are ready to replace shooting with evasion and sustained pursuit.
- Try SOMA for a slower, idea-driven form of fear.
- Play Amnesia: The Dark Descent when puzzles and vulnerability are more appealing than combat.
- Finish with Outlast 2 if you want the most uncompromising flee-and-hide design.
If stealth is what you liked most
Begin with Alien: Isolation, then try Amnesia: The Dark Descent for a more puzzle-centered version of vulnerability. Outlast 2 is the next step if you want to remove even more of the player’s ability to resist. SOMA can follow when you want the emphasis to move from physical pursuit to psychological uncertainty.
If story and atmosphere matter more than action
Start with SOMA. Follow it with Amnesia if you want environmental problem solving, or with Alien: Isolation if you want atmosphere combined with a persistent physical pursuer. Keep Dead Space for later if you want to reintroduce a stronger action loop.
If you are unsure about helpless horror
Do not begin with Outlast 2 simply because it is often described as intense. Dead Space gives you a controlled way to test original horror, while Alien: Isolation lets you experience pursuit with more emphasis on reading and managing the environment. Move to Outlast 2 only if that loss of control sounds appealing.

Use headphones only if they improve your experience
Atmospheric audio is especially important in pursuit and evasion games. A closed-back gaming headset can help you distinguish directional sounds and keep the experience private, but it is an accessory, not a requirement. Choose one only if you value positional audio and comfort during long, quiet sections. Keep the volume at a safe level; louder is not the same as more immersive.
Plan for the pacing you selected
Combat-heavy horror can be played in shorter encounters, while stealth games may build tension through long stretches of waiting and careful movement. Set aside enough uninterrupted time for the design you picked. Pausing during a chase or stopping immediately after a failure can make a deliberately sustained experience feel more frustrating than it needs to be.
Common mistakes when moving from licensed to original horror
Choosing by setting alone
A science-fiction setting does not guarantee the same experience. Dead Space uses science fiction to support resource pressure and combat; SOMA uses it to raise psychological and philosophical questions. Pick the fear structure, not merely the visual theme.
Expecting every game to explain its rules immediately
Licensed properties often arrive with familiar conventions. Original games may teach their rules through uncertainty. Give SOMA, Amnesia and Alien: Isolation room to establish how they want you to think before deciding that the pace is too slow or the options are too limited.
Assuming “more helpless” means “better”
Helplessness is a preference, not a quality scale. Outlast 2 may be the perfect choice for one player and an exhausting one for another. A game is a good follow-up when its demands match the kind of tension you actually want to sustain.
