The best Minecraft server optimization setup depends on the server platform. Paper servers use plugins and Paper’s own settings; Fabric, NeoForge, Forge, and Quilt servers use loader-specific mods. Start by profiling a busy period with Spark, then apply platform-appropriate changes, pre-generate the playable world with Chunky, and measure again. Lithium is a common logic-performance mod for Fabric-family servers, FerriteCore targets memory use, and none of these tools has a universally verified percentage gain. Your own before-and-after measurements are the only reliable performance verdict.
Choose tools by server platform
Optimization software is not interchangeable between Minecraft server ecosystems. A Paper server loads Bukkit-compatible plugins, while Fabric, NeoForge, Forge, and Quilt servers load mods through their respective mod loaders. Installing a mod built for one ecosystem in another normally does nothing or prevents the server from starting.
| Server platform | Primary optimization options | What each option addresses | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper | Paper configuration, startup flags, Spark, Chunky | Paper’s built-in scheduling and entity controls, diagnosis, and world generation | Fabric mods such as Lithium and FerriteCore are not Paper plugins |
| Fabric | Lithium, FerriteCore, optional Krypton, Spark, Chunky | Game-logic tick work, memory use, networking, diagnosis, and world generation | Every file must match the Minecraft and Fabric versions in use |
| NeoForge or Forge | FerriteCore, Spark, Chunky, and loader-compatible optimization mods | Memory, diagnosis, and world generation; community stacks may include additional logic mods | Compatibility varies sharply by Minecraft release and mod collection |
| Quilt | Quilt-compatible builds of Lithium, FerriteCore, Spark, and Chunky | The same broad categories as Fabric where a compatible build exists | Check that each project explicitly supports Quilt rather than assuming Fabric compatibility |
Spark and Chunky are the most broadly useful tools in this list: Spark diagnoses performance on multiple server types, and Chunky supports Spigot, Paper, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, and Sponge according to its project listing. Lithium, by contrast, is a Fabric-family mod and should not be treated as a Paper add-on.
Profile the server before changing it
Performance work is most effective when you identify the bottleneck first. A server can feel laggy because of high tick time, slow disk access during chunk generation, memory pressure, a network problem, or a client-side issue. Installing several optimization mods at once makes it impossible to tell which change helped or caused a regression.

Install Spark for diagnosis
- Download the Spark build that matches your server platform and Minecraft version. Paper uses the plugin distribution; modded servers use the appropriate mod distribution.
- Install it in the server’s normal
pluginsormodsdirectory, then restart the server rather than hot-loading the file. - During a busy period, run Spark’s profiler for approximately 30 seconds. On builds that support the standard command, use
/spark profiler start --timeout 30. If your build presents a different help syntax, run/spark helpand use the displayed equivalent. - Stop the profiler if it does not stop automatically with
/spark profiler stop, then save the generated report or link before making another change. - Record the same basic health information before and after every change. Spark’s TPS and health commands differ slightly by release, so use the commands shown by
/spark helpfor your installed build.
Spark describes itself as a performance profiler for Minecraft clients, servers, and proxies. Community guidance considers its CPU sampling light enough for production use, and a roughly 30-second sample is commonly sufficient to reveal the largest hot spots. Treat that as a practical starting point, not a guarantee: a short capture can miss a periodic save, a farm cycle, or a rare redstone event.
Read the profile by symptom
- High MSPT or low TPS: the main server thread is taking too long. Look for entities, block ticking, redstone, plugin tasks, or expensive mod logic in the profile.
- Normal MSPT but players rubber-band: investigate network latency, connection quality, proxy configuration, or a client-side problem instead of adding tick-optimization mods.
- Short freezes during exploration: compare the profile with chunk-generation activity and disk latency. Pre-generation is usually more appropriate than an entity-clearing plugin.
- Frequent garbage-collection pauses or an exhausted heap: investigate allocation and memory use. FerriteCore may help on a compatible modded server, but it cannot repair an undersized or misconfigured Java installation by itself.
- One mod dominates the profile: test that mod’s configuration and issue tracker before installing unrelated optimizers. Optimization layers cannot make incompatible or pathological behavior safe.
Paper servers: use Paper’s tuning before adding plugins
Paper’s official documentation presents Paper as tuned for performance out of the box and directs administrators to review startup flags and configuration. That makes Paper’s own settings the first optimization step, not a pile of generic “lag fix” plugins.
Recommended Free Tools
Apply a controlled Paper baseline
- Back up the complete server directory, including the world folders, configuration files, and permission data.
- Update Paper only after checking that your plugins support the target Minecraft release. Keep a copy of the previous server jar so you can roll back.
- Review the startup command and use the Java flags recommended for your current Paper and Java versions. Do not paste flags from an old guide without checking their assumptions; garbage-collector recommendations change as Java and Paper change.
- Run Spark during a representative busy period and save the report.
- Change one Paper setting at a time, restart, reproduce the same workload, and profile again.
Community guides disagree about values in paper-world-defaults.yml, especially max-auto-save-chunks-per-tick. One guide recommends 8 and warns against going lower because of data-loss risk; another uses 6. Those numbers are not an official universal prescription. Keep Paper’s documented defaults unless your profile shows saving as a bottleneck, then test a conservative change with current backups and verify that world saves complete correctly.
Control entities through Paper, not blind clearing
Automatically deleting entities can remove items, pets, villagers, or technical components that players need. A community guide advises against entity-clearing plugins and favors Paper’s entity-limit settings instead; attribution confidence for that advice is low, but the operational risk is clear. Use Paper’s documented per-world limits and spawning controls, identify the source of excessive entities with Spark, and fix the farm or configuration producing them. Never install a clearing plugin merely because a server feels slow.
When Paper is the right choice
Choose Paper when you want a plugin-centered administration model, broad Bukkit compatibility, and performance controls maintained alongside the server implementation. If the optimization you want is a Fabric-only mod, switching to Paper is not a way to install it; you would be changing the server ecosystem and potentially giving up mod compatibility.

Fabric, NeoForge, Forge, and Quilt: the mod-based stack
Modded servers need loader-compatible files, matching Minecraft versions, and a dependency plan. The commonly suggested Fabric baseline is Lithium plus FerriteCore, with Krypton considered for larger online populations and Spark retained for diagnosis. Community recommendations are useful starting points, not proof that every server benefits from every component.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Lithium for game-logic work
The Lithium project describes itself as a Fabric mod designed to improve general Minecraft performance without breaking things. Its focus includes game logic, mob AI, physics, and block ticking. The project is distributed for Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt, and a Fabric build for Minecraft 1.21.11 is listed on CurseForge. Lithium is not a Paper plugin.
- Confirm the exact Minecraft version and loader version shown in the server log.
- Download the Lithium file whose metadata names that version and loader.
- Place it in the server’s
modsdirectory alongside the required loader libraries. - Restart the server and inspect the log for a successful load and any incompatibility warnings.
- Profile the same workload again. Keep Lithium only if it improves the measured bottleneck without breaking a required mod.
Third-party articles sometimes claim 30–50% tick-time improvements from Lithium. No primary benchmark establishing a general percentage was found, so do not promise that result. The effect depends on version, entity count, redstone activity, installed mods, CPU, and the specific workload.
FerriteCore for memory pressure
FerriteCore targets memory use rather than directly speeding up the server tick loop. Community sources commonly recommend it on Fabric and Forge, subject to version compatibility. Circulating estimates of 500 MB to 2 GB saved or a 40–50% RAM reduction are vendor-style, unverified figures and should not be treated as expected results.
- Check the project’s release metadata for your loader and Minecraft version.
- Install the file in
modsand restart. - Compare heap usage, garbage-collection pauses, and startup logs with the pre-installation baseline.
- Remove it if a required mod reports a conflict or if the server becomes unstable; restoring the previous mod set is safer than debugging several simultaneous changes.
Krypton and other optional additions
Community guides often place Krypton after Lithium and FerriteCore, particularly for servers with 20 or more players. That is a recommendation with low-to-medium confidence, not a capacity guarantee. Test it against your actual network and tick profile; a server whose bottleneck is block entities will not be fixed by a networking-focused addition.

For Forge-oriented stacks, one community guide lists Canary or Radium, ModernFix, and Memory Leak Fix. Confidence in that specific stack is low. Canary is described in the available material as a community port rather than an official Lithium build, so verify the project, maintainer, release, and issue history before deploying it. Never substitute a similarly named file simply because a guide lists it.
Install mods one at a time
Use this order for a new modded server: make a backup, install Spark, capture a baseline, add Lithium, measure, add FerriteCore, measure, and then consider Krypton or a loader-specific addition. Keep a written change log containing the file name, version, date, startup result, and measured MSPT or memory behavior. This turns a crash or regression into a reversible change rather than a complete rebuild.
Pre-generate the world with Chunky
Exploration can trigger chunk generation exactly when players are moving through the world. That work competes with normal gameplay and often appears as sudden freezes or delayed terrain. Chunky’s project description says it pre-generates chunks quickly, efficiently, and safely, and its supported-platform listing covers Paper, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, Spigot, and Sponge.
Match the generated area to the world border
Set the world border first, then generate the area inside it. Pre-generating beyond the border wastes CPU time and disk space; generating less leaves players able to trigger expensive terrain creation during play. If different dimensions have different borders, process each dimension separately.
Typical Chunky workflow
- Stop the server and make a full world backup before a large generation job.
- Install the platform-compatible Chunky plugin or mod and restart.
- Set or confirm the world border using the server’s normal border controls.
- In the target world, select the border-shaped region. On builds supporting the common command set,
/chunky worldborderuses the current border; otherwise use the project’s displayed selection command. - Start generation with
/chunky start. - Monitor progress with
/chunky progress. Schedule the work during maintenance because generation still consumes CPU, memory, and storage bandwidth. - Pause with
/chunky pausewhen players need the resources, resume with/chunky continue, or cancel with/chunky cancelif the selected area is wrong. - After completion, restart the server, verify that the generated area matches the border, and profile exploration before opening the server to players.
Host guides note that Chunky uses vanilla generation, so it should not consume more resources than normal generation for the same work. Avoid tools that produce corrupted or cut chunks. Keep the backup until players have successfully explored the generated boundary and the server has completed a normal save.

How long will generation take?
A benchmark page reports about 103 chunks per second on Minecraft 26.3 Fabric, but that is a single, hardware-dependent result and is not reproducible from the available evidence. Treat it as an illustration, not a planning rate. Region size, terrain features, storage, CPU, simulation distance, and other mods can change the result by a large amount. Use Chunky’s live progress and your own elapsed time to estimate the maintenance window.
Benchmark changes instead of trusting percentages
No primary-source statistic establishes a universal gain percentage for these optimization tools. Claims of an 80% reduction in TPS problems from pre-generation, 30–50% tick-time improvement from Lithium, or 40–50% memory reduction from FerriteCore are unverified and should not be used as capacity promises.
A repeatable before-and-after test
- Choose a workload that represents real use: the same number of players, a known farm area, the same view and simulation distances, and a fixed exploration route.
- Warm the server for several minutes so startup compilation and initial loading do not dominate the sample.
- Capture Spark for about 30 seconds during the workload and record TPS, MSPT, top tasks, memory usage, and any visible pauses.
- Change exactly one variable, restart, and repeat the workload under comparable conditions.
- Keep the change only when it improves the target metric without introducing crashes, missing entities, broken machines, or unacceptable memory behavior.
| Metric | What to compare | What an improvement means |
|---|---|---|
| MSPT | Average and worst observed tick time | The server has more headroom before ticks overrun their schedule |
| TPS | Stability during the same workload | Fewer missed ticks; do not interpret a short idle sample as proof |
| Memory | Used heap, allocation rate, and pause behavior | Less pressure or shorter pauses, not merely a larger heap reservation |
| Chunk generation | Exploration latency and generation queue | Fewer freezes after the selected area has been pre-generated |
| Reliability | Crashes, warnings, corrupted chunks, and mod errors | A change is acceptable only if normal gameplay remains intact |
Common failures and recovery steps
The server will not start after installing a mod
- Read the first fatal error in the log, not only the final shutdown line.
- Confirm the loader, Minecraft version, Java version, and dependency versions.
- Remove the last-added file, restore the backup if necessary, and start again.
- Do not add another optimizer to “fix” an unresolved version mismatch.
A large mod conflicts with an optimizer
Large content mods, including examples such as Create, can interact badly with optimization changes. Check the affected mod’s issue tracker and release notes before assuming the optimizer is at fault. Reproduce the problem with only the content mod and then with the optimizer restored; this isolates the conflict without sacrificing the entire server configuration.
Players still report lag after optimization
Ask when and where the lag occurs. If it happens only while exploring new terrain, finish or extend Chunky’s border-matched generation. If it occurs near a farm, profile entity and block-entity activity. If only distant players report delay, inspect network and view-distance settings. If Spark shows a plugin or mod dominating CPU time, tune or replace that component rather than adding more general-purpose mods.
Memory use appears higher after adding FerriteCore
Compare like-for-like conditions: the same world, player count, uptime, heap size, and loaded dimensions. Java may retain allocated memory for reuse, so operating-system usage alone is not enough. Examine garbage-collection pauses and live heap behavior; remove FerriteCore if logs show a conflict or if the measured workload does not improve.

Paper versus Fabric performance: which should you choose?
| Decision factor | Paper | Fabric-family server |
|---|---|---|
| Optimization model | Built-in server tuning and plugins | Loader-compatible mods |
| Best first action | Paper settings, startup review, and Spark profiling | Spark profiling, then Lithium and FerriteCore testing |
| Mod ecosystem | Not compatible with Fabric mods | Supports Fabric, and in some cases NeoForge or Quilt builds |
| World-generation mitigation | Chunky | Chunky |
| Evidence for percentage gains | No universal verified percentage | No universal verified percentage |
| Administrative trade-off | Simple plugin administration and broad Paper tooling | More mod flexibility, with stricter version and dependency management |
Choose the platform based on the gameplay and mod ecosystem you need first. Do not migrate solely because an article promises a percentage improvement. A well-profiled Paper server can outperform a poorly configured modded server, and a carefully maintained Fabric server can be the better choice when the required mods are Fabric-native.

- Back up: copy worlds and configuration before every structural change.
- Identify the platform: Paper means plugins and Paper settings; Fabric, NeoForge, Forge, or Quilt means loader-specific mods.
- Profile: run Spark for about 30 seconds during a busy, representative period.
- Fix the largest bottleneck: use Paper settings for Paper, Lithium for tested Fabric-family logic improvements, FerriteCore for measured memory pressure, or a targeted configuration change for the identified task.
- Pre-generate: use Chunky inside the world border before opening the server to regular exploration.
- Re-measure: repeat the same workload after each change and retain only demonstrably useful, stable changes.
- Document versions: record Minecraft, Java, loader, server build, mod versions, and configuration values so the setup can be recreated after an update.
Maintenance after Minecraft updates
Compatibility changes with every Minecraft release. Before updating, check the project page on the distribution service used for the file, confirm that a release exists for the new Minecraft and loader versions, read changelogs and known issues, and test on a copy of the world. A mod that worked on one release may fail to load, silently disable a feature, or conflict with another mod after an update.
Keep Spark available after updates because an optimization that helped an older release may no longer target the same hot path. Re-run the baseline profile, then retest Chunky-generated areas if world-generation code changed. Do not infer performance from version numbers or from another administrator’s hardware.
Bottom line
For Paper, start with Paper’s own configuration and Spark, then use Chunky to remove exploration-time generation spikes. For Fabric-family servers, test Lithium for tick-related work and FerriteCore for memory pressure, adding Krypton or other loader-specific tools only when profiling justifies them. Forge and NeoForge administrators should verify every community recommendation and release carefully. Chunky should follow the world border, and every claimed improvement should be validated on the server that will actually host your players.
