The best starting stack for most modded servers is Lithium for game-logic efficiency, FerriteCore for memory reduction, and ModernFix for startup, memory, compatibility fixes and broad performance work. Add Spark profiling before changing anything, then install only the mod that addresses your measured bottleneck. Use Sodium (Fabric) or Embeddium (Forge/NeoForge) on players’ clients for FPS; they do not improve server TPS. Treat C2ME, Moonrise, Starlight and Canary as conditional additions because their chunk, lighting and tick patches can overlap.

If you want to run this optimization stack on a hosted modded Minecraft server, Godlike.Host offers Minecraft modded hosting with a built-in mod installer, one-click modpacks, SFTP/FTP access, backups, and a Pterodactyl-based game panel.

What server optimization mods actually improve

A Minecraft server has several different workloads, and a mod that helps one may do nothing for another. A low frame rate on a player’s computer is a rendering problem; slow block updates, mob farms or redstone are tick-processing problems; long waits while exploring are usually chunk-generation or storage problems; crashes during startup and excessive heap use are startup or memory problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Server health is normally discussed in TPS (ticks per second) and MSPT (milliseconds per tick). A healthy server aims to complete each tick within the time budget for its configured tick rate. When a tick takes too long, TPS falls and players see delayed block updates, mob movement and redstone. Measure those values instead of assuming that a popular mod will help.

The recommended baseline: Lithium, FerriteCore and ModernFix

Lithium for server game logic

Lithium is a general-purpose optimization mod aimed at game physics, mob AI, block ticking and related logic. Its stated goal is to improve those systems without changing vanilla mechanics. That makes it the most sensible first server-side experiment when MSPT rises during ordinary play, farms or redstone activity.

Lithium runs on both client and server, but a dedicated server can use it without requiring every player to install the mod. Players on an unmodded client can therefore connect when the server, loader and protocol setup otherwise permit it. Install the server build that exactly matches your Minecraft version and loader; do not substitute a build for a nearby release.

FerriteCore for memory pressure

FerriteCore reduces Minecraft’s memory use through several internal changes, with some high-impact optimizations applying to servers. It is useful when the process approaches its heap limit, garbage collection becomes frequent, or a large modpack leaves too little headroom for chunk loading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The project documents one illustrative measurement: in an All Of Fabric 3 test, heap use fell from 1,792 MB to 984 MB after a fixed-seed world was generated and the process waited two minutes, using a version identified on the project page as 2.5.9. That is a project example, not a universal reduction. World size, loaded chunks, Java version and the rest of the mod list can produce very different results.

ModernFix for broad improvements

ModernFix combines performance work, memory reductions, startup changes and bug fixes. It publishes builds for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across multiple Minecraft versions, so it can be the broadest first addition after checking that a build exists for your exact environment.

The project reports that most Forge modpacks from Minecraft 1.16 through 1.19.2 launch roughly twice as fast with ModernFix installed. That figure is a project-reported result rather than an independent benchmark, and it describes launch time, not in-game TPS. ModernFix also warns that OptiFine is not recommended for modded scenarios and is not officially supported with ModernFix; remove that combination while troubleshooting instead of treating it as a supported baseline.

Client FPS mods are a separate decision

Sodium on Fabric

Sodium substantially rewrites the client renderer to improve frame rate and frame-time consistency. It belongs in each player’s client installation on Fabric. It can make a heavily modded world feel smoother, but it does not reduce the server’s tick workload, chunk simulation cost or memory use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Embeddium on Forge or NeoForge

Embeddium is the Forge/NeoForge-oriented rendering choice described for this optimization stack. Like Sodium, it is a client-rendering solution. Do not copy it into a dedicated server’s mods directory unless the particular build explicitly documents server support; keep client-only rendering mods on clients.

Conditional additions for chunks, lighting and ticking

C2ME for chunk generation and I/O

C2ME targets chunk generation, chunk loading and related I/O. Consider it when profiling shows that new terrain generation or loading dominates tick time during exploration. It is not a default add-on for every pack: asynchronous or parallel chunk work can expose incompatibilities in mods that assume a particular execution order.

Moonrise for chunk-system and server-tick work

Moonrise focuses on server ticking and chunk-system work. Its scope overlaps with several other optimization projects. The performance guidance specifically identifies possible overlap or conflict with C2ME, Lithium, FerriteCore, Canary and Starlight. Do not enable Moonrise alongside all of those and assume that more patches equal more speed; test one design, record the result, and remove the weaker or conflicting option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Starlight for supported older or specific versions

Starlight remains relevant mainly on older or specifically compatible versions where its lighting implementation fits the rest of the pack. Newer optimization stacks may already contain similar lighting changes. Verify that your target Minecraft release, loader and other lighting-related mods are supported before adding it.

Canary and other overlapping patches

Canary can address server performance in some versions, but it is named among the projects whose patches may overlap with Moonrise. Treat it as an alternative to evaluate against a measured bottleneck, not as an automatic companion to every baseline mod.

Compatibility is more important than a long mod list

Evaluate every candidate on five axes:

  • Exact Minecraft and loader build: a Fabric release is not interchangeable with a Forge or NeoForge release, and a nearby Minecraft version may have different internals.
  • Side: identify whether the mod is server-only, client-only or required on both sides. Lithium’s server-only deployment is explicitly supported; Sodium and Embeddium are rendering choices for clients.
  • Bottleneck: match logic, memory, startup, rendering, lighting or chunk generation to a measurement.
  • Patch overlap: check whether two mods alter the same chunk, lighting, memory or tick code.
  • Behavioral promise: prefer projects that state their intent to preserve vanilla behavior when gameplay compatibility is a priority, while still testing your particular modpack.

Read each project’s current installation and compatibility notes immediately before deployment. Version support changes frequently, and a recommendation that is safe for one release can be wrong for the next.

How to install and measure an optimization stack safely

  1. Record the baseline. Write down the Minecraft version, loader and loader version, Java version, server hardware, allocated heap, operating system and complete mod list. Keep a copy of the current server directory and configuration files.
  2. Reproduce the problem. Test the activity that causes trouble: a mob farm, redstone area, long-distance flight, a fresh-world exploration route or a cold server start. Record TPS, MSPT, heap use, garbage-collection behavior and chunk-generation symptoms. A profiler such as Spark can show which systems consume tick time.
  3. Install the smallest baseline. Add a version-matched Lithium build, then FerriteCore, then ModernFix where compatible builds exist. Restart fully after each change; do not combine three changes if you need to identify which one helped.
  4. Retest the same workload. Use the same area, player count and activity for a comparable period. Note whether the improvement appears in MSPT, heap use, startup time or only subjective smoothness.
  5. Add client rendering separately. Give Fabric players Sodium or Forge/NeoForge players Embeddium when their problem is FPS. Keep those client-focused files off the dedicated server.
  6. Test conditional systems one at a time. If profiling points to chunk generation, evaluate C2ME. If chunk-system ticking is the issue, evaluate Moonrise instead. Consider Starlight or Canary only when their version support and patch scope fit the pack.
  7. Validate a real play session. Load existing bases, farms, dimensions and automation; join with the actual client mix; travel through unexplored terrain; restart the server; and watch logs for errors, deadlocks or repeated warnings.
  8. Keep a rollback point. Stop the server, back up the world, mods, configuration and startup arguments, and label the tested combination. If a new build causes crashes or changed behavior, restore the backup rather than deleting files from a live world.

Reading profiling results

When MSPT is high during normal simulation

Start with Lithium and inspect entities, block entities, scheduled block ticks and automation in the profiler. FerriteCore may reduce memory pressure but will not automatically make an expensive mob farm’s AI cheaper. ModernFix can address broad overhead, yet it is not a substitute for removing an overloaded contraption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When exploration causes spikes

Separate generation from storage and network effects. If new chunks are the clear source of long ticks, C2ME may be worth a controlled test. Pre-generating terrain or reducing simultaneous exploration can be safer than stacking several asynchronous chunk patches. Compare the same route before and after the change.

When heap use climbs or the server is killed for memory

Check the Java maximum heap, loaded-chunk radius, dimension activity and mod list before simply assigning more RAM. FerriteCore can lower baseline usage, but its documented reduction is pack-dependent. More allocated memory can postpone an out-of-memory failure while leaving a leak or unbounded chunk load untouched.

When startup is the complaint

Measure from process launch to the point at which the server accepts connections, and repeat after clearing unrelated noise from the comparison. ModernFix’s reported launch improvement applies to most Forge 1.16–1.19.2 modpacks in the project’s own testing; it should not be presented as a promise for every loader, release or pack.

When only one player’s screen is slow

Inspect client frame time, graphics settings, shader use, resolution and entity density. Sodium or Embeddium can improve rendering, but adding a server tick mod will not fix a GPU-limited client. Conversely, lowering client graphics cannot repair a server whose MSPT is above its tick budget.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common failure modes and recovery

The server crashes immediately after adding a mod

  • Confirm the file matches both Minecraft and the loader; do not rely on a similar filename or major version.
  • Read the crash report for a mixin, dependency or duplicate transformation error.
  • Remove the newest mod, restore the last known-good backup and retest with only that candidate present.

Chunks generate incorrectly or players hang while traveling

  • Do not run C2ME and Moonrise together by default; their chunk-system changes can overlap.
  • Check whether another mod, including a lighting or tick optimizer, patches the same subsystem.
  • Test on a copy of the world before returning to production, because a corrupted or partially generated chunk can outlive the mod that caused it.

Gameplay seems different after an optimization change

Disable the newest optimization and compare the same farm, redstone circuit or mob behavior. Lithium is designed around preserving vanilla mechanics, but compatibility with other mods still needs testing. Keep a before-and-after log of observed behavior instead of assuming that a performance gain is worth a mechanic change.

Players cannot connect after a server-only installation

Verify that the mod is documented as server-compatible without a client component, that the loader accepts the connecting client, and that no required dependency is missing. Lithium is specifically described as usable on a server without requiring clients to install it; do not generalize that behavior to every optimization mod.

A practical decision framework

If your evidence shows… Try first Do not assume
Entity, physics or block-tick time dominates MSPT Lithium, then targeted farm or entity cleanup FerriteCore alone will lower tick computation
Heap use is consistently high across the same workload FerriteCore and a review of loaded chunks and Java settings The documented 1,792-to-984 MB example will repeat
Startup is slow on a supported Forge pack ModernFix and a measured cold-start comparison “Twice as fast” applies to every version or loader
Players report low FPS but server metrics are healthy Sodium or Embeddium on the appropriate clients A client renderer will improve server TPS
New terrain causes the largest spikes Controlled C2ME testing or pre-generation Adding Moonrise, Starlight and Canary together is safer
Lighting is the measured bottleneck on an older compatible release Version-appropriate Starlight testing Starlight is necessary on every current stack

What to keep in production

For a typical modded server, keep the stack deliberately small: Lithium, FerriteCore and ModernFix when each has a build for the exact environment. Add a client renderer only to clients that need it. Promote C2ME, Moonrise, Starlight or Canary to production only when a repeatable profile shows that the specific subsystem is limiting performance and compatibility testing passes.

Re-profile after Minecraft, loader, Java or major modpack updates. An optimization mod can become redundant when another project absorbs its patch, and an update can change an internal API that previously made two mods coexist. The fastest stable server is usually the one with the fewest overlapping transformations that demonstrably address its measured bottleneck.
