Hermes Agent is the closest self-hosted replacement for OpenClaw in 2026. It is the strongest starting point if you want a personal autonomous agent with a migration path. For smaller machines, compare ZeroClaw, Nanobot and PicoClaw. For stronger isolation of untrusted prompts or tools, look at NanoClaw and IronClaw. If you mainly need a private chat interface or visual automation rather than an always-on agent, Open WebUI, LibreChat, Jan, Dify or n8n are better fits.
The projects below are not interchangeable. They differ in how closely they reproduce OpenClaw, their runtime and licence, resource demands, isolation model and whether they are agents, chat front ends or workflow builders. Choose against your workload first, then verify the current repository, release and pricing before deploying.

OpenClaw is an open-source, self-hostable personal-agent project. Secondary guides describe it as MIT-licensed and identify its official repository as github.com/openclaw/openclaw. A similarly named .NET runtime at openclaw.net is a separate project, so check the repository and maintainers before installing anything.
In this guide, an alternative means software you can run on your own computer or VPS that addresses at least one of OpenClaw’s jobs: maintaining a personal agent, connecting models to tools, or automating actions. Some options are close substitutes; others solve a neighboring problem and should not be presented as clones.

Most published rankings are vendor or affiliate roundups rather than independent benchmark studies. Treat labels such as “best,” star counts, release numbers and performance figures as editorial opinions until you confirm them in each project’s own documentation.
Quick comparison
| Project | Best for | Runtime and licence reported by secondary guides | Footprint or deployment note | Agent, chat or workflow | Isolation or control model |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hermes Agent | Closest OpenClaw feature match | Python; MIT | Fuller-featured personal agent; exact RAM and CPU requirements not stated | Autonomous agent | Migration command reported; verify tool permissions in current documentation |
| ZeroClaw | Small VPS, home server or Raspberry Pi-class hardware | Rust; dual MIT or Apache-2.0 | One guide reports an approximately 8.8 MB single binary and sub-10 ms startup; both figures are unverified | Autonomous agent | Lightweight process; confirm sandboxing before exposing tools |
| Nanobot | Learning, customization and a small Python core | Python; licence not consistently stated in the available guides | One guide describes a readable core of about 4,000 lines; unverified | Autonomous agent | Small codebase does not by itself provide isolation |
| PicoClaw | Edge and low-power devices | Not consistently stated | Designed for constrained hardware; concrete RAM and CPU figures are not stated | Autonomous agent | Check the current sandbox and secret-handling model |
| NanoClaw | Running agents with per-agent isolation | MIT | Self-hosted and free according to secondary guides | Autonomous agent | Sources disagree on Docker container versus microVM isolation; verify before relying on it |
| IronClaw | Rust-based agent with a WebAssembly sandbox | Rust; dual MIT or Apache-2.0 | Repository reported as nearai/ironclaw; hardware requirements not stated |
Autonomous agent | WebAssembly sandbox; hosted service is a separate choice |
| Open WebUI | Private chat over local models | Licence and hardware vary by release | Commonly paired with local Ollama models | Chat interface | Local model and account controls; not an OpenClaw clone |
| LibreChat | Private, ChatGPT-style team interface | Licence and requirements vary by release | Designed for a self-hosted team deployment | Chat interface | Administrative and provider controls; not an always-on personal agent |
| Jan | Fully offline desktop use | Licence and hardware vary by release | Runs on the user’s own machine | Chat interface | Offline operation can reduce external data exposure |
| Dify | Visual, repeatable AI workflows | Licence and requirements vary by release | Secondary guides describe Docker Compose deployment | Workflow platform | Workflow-level credentials and permissions |
| n8n | General workflow automation with AI steps | Community edition is free to self-host | Requires a persistent service and the integrations you configure | Workflow platform | Credential and execution controls depend on your configuration |
The table separates reported characteristics from unknowns. The 8.8 MB, sub-10 ms and 4,000-line figures come from unnamed secondary guides, not published tests reviewed here. No dependable, cross-project RAM or CPU benchmark was available, so do not size a VPS from those figures alone.

1. Hermes Agent: the closest replacement
Hermes Agent is the default choice when your priority is OpenClaw-like behavior rather than the smallest binary. Multiple secondary guides place it first because it combines a broad personal-agent feature set with a migration path for existing OpenClaw users. It is reported as MIT-licensed and written in Python.
Migration path
The command most often cited for moving an OpenClaw setup is:
hermes claw migrate
Run it only after reading the version-specific migration instructions. Back up configuration, prompts, credentials and task data first; a migration command may translate settings without reproducing every integration or permission exactly.
When Hermes Agent fits
- You want one personal agent rather than a collection of disconnected automations.
- You value feature parity and community attention more than minimal resource use.
- You are willing to run Python services and maintain their dependencies.
Costs and caveats
The software is described as free and MIT-licensed. Optional model plans from Nous Portal are a separate paid service; self-hosting the agent does not make model inference free. Current model, compute and service pricing should be checked directly before budgeting. Exact hardware requirements were not established, so monitor memory, model latency and tool workload on your chosen machine.

2. Lightweight agents for modest hardware
ZeroClaw
ZeroClaw targets low-cost servers and Raspberry Pi-class devices. Guides describe a Rust implementation with a single binary and report approximately 8.8 MB size and sub-10 ms startup. Those measurements are secondary and have no stated test method, version or hardware, so treat them as indicative rather than a guarantee. Its licence is consistently reported as dual MIT or Apache-2.0.
Choose ZeroClaw when quick startup, a small deployment artifact and low overhead matter more than maximum compatibility with OpenClaw extensions. Confirm supported CPU architectures, model connectors, persistence and secret storage before putting it on an exposed VPS.
Nanobot
Nanobot deliberately keeps its Python core small. One roundup estimates a readable core of about 4,000 lines, but the estimate is not tied to a published commit or date. That design can make experimentation and auditing easier, yet a small codebase is not the same as a security boundary. Plan to run it with a dedicated user, restricted filesystem access and narrowly scoped credentials.
PicoClaw
PicoClaw is aimed at edge and low-power hardware. The available summaries do not establish a licence, minimum RAM, supported boards or a measured performance envelope. It is therefore a candidate for constrained deployments, not a promise that every Raspberry Pi or router will run it. Verify architecture support and storage requirements before purchasing hardware.

- Model inference usually dominates CPU, RAM and power use; a tiny agent process does not make a large local model inexpensive.
- Limited storage can affect conversation history, logs and downloaded model files.
- Low-power devices need a recovery plan for corrupted storage, lost network access and unattended updates.
3. Isolation-first options
NanoClaw
NanoClaw is positioned as a free, MIT-licensed self-hosted agent that gives each agent its own isolated environment. Secondary sources conflict on the implementation: one describes a Docker container per agent, while another describes a microVM sandbox. That distinction changes kernel exposure, startup cost and operational procedures, so inspect the current project documentation before treating NanoClaw as container- or microVM-based.
Use separate credentials for each agent, deny host mounts by default and test what happens when a prompt asks the agent to read private files or invoke a network tool. Isolation is useful only when the policy, runtime and mounted resources actually enforce it.

IronClaw
IronClaw, associated with NEAR AI, is reported as a Rust project using a WebAssembly sandbox. The repository name appearing in the available material is nearai/ironclaw, and the licence is reported as dual MIT or Apache-2.0. WebAssembly can narrow the capabilities exposed to tools, but the safety outcome still depends on host integration, permissions and the modules you enable.
A hosted NEAR AI Cloud option is described in secondary coverage as running in a trusted execution environment, with a free starter allocation of one agent and $5 of credits and paid plans from $20 per month. Those figures were not checked against the provider’s pricing page and should not be used as a current quote. Self-hosting IronClaw and using its hosted service are different threat, cost and maintenance choices.

TrustClaw and OAuth-scoped actions
TrustClaw is described as open source and self-hostable, with emphasis on secure application actions through OAuth and sandboxing. The trade-off is less local control than a purely local agent. It can be appropriate when limiting which applications an agent may access is more important than owning every runtime component.
4. When a chat interface is the better answer
Open WebUI, LibreChat and Jan are useful when the real requirement is private conversation with models, not an autonomous process that watches events and acts on your behalf.
Open WebUI
Open WebUI is widely used as a self-hosted chat interface and is commonly paired with local Ollama models. It gives you a browser-based front end, model selection and conversation management without requiring an OpenClaw-style agent loop. Pick it for interactive use, family or household access, and local-model experimentation.
LibreChat
LibreChat follows a ChatGPT-style interface and is suited to a private team deployment. It is a better fit than an autonomous agent when several people need accounts, shared administration and a familiar chat workflow. You will still need to configure identity, model providers, storage and network access securely.

Jan
Jan runs fully offline on the user’s own machine. That makes it attractive for travel, sensitive drafts or environments where an always-on server is unnecessary. Offline operation does not remove local risks: protect the device, encrypt storage and restrict imported files and extensions.
These three tools can complement an agent, but they do not replace event triggers, long-running task state or autonomous tool execution by themselves.
5. Workflow platforms instead of personal agents
Dify
Dify is a visual workflow builder. Secondary guides describe deployment with Docker Compose, making it suitable for repeatable pipelines that connect prompts, models, data sources and approval steps. Choose it when you want a designed flow with observable stages rather than an agent that decides its own next action.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
n8n
n8n’s community edition is free to self-host and focuses on general workflow automation. It can call AI models as one step among many, then connect to webhooks, databases and business services. It is often the practical choice for scheduled jobs and deterministic integrations, provided you configure credentials, retries and execution history carefully.
Both platforms can implement an OpenClaw-like outcome for a narrow process, but they require you to model triggers, branches and error handling explicitly. They are not drop-in replacements for a personal agent’s memory and behavior.
How to choose in 2026
- Define the job. Write down whether you need autonomous, event-driven action; interactive chat; or a repeatable workflow. Eliminate tools from the wrong category before comparing features.
- Set the trust boundary. List files, network destinations, accounts and actions the software may access. If prompts or documents can be untrusted, favor a sandboxed design and separate credentials.
- Measure your hardware. Record available RAM, CPU architecture, disk space, GPU access and whether the machine can remain online. Do not infer requirements from an agent’s binary size.
- Choose your operating model. A home computer offers physical control but may sleep or change networks. A VPS is reachable and persistent but adds provider, firewall and update responsibilities.
- Verify project health. Check the current repository, licence file, release date, issue activity, installation instructions and backup procedure. Secondary rankings are not substitutes for those checks.
- Test with harmless tasks. Start with read-only files and a disposable account. Confirm logs, approval prompts, network restrictions and shutdown behavior before granting write or financial permissions.
- Plan recovery. Export configuration, back up state, document version pins and rehearse restoring the service. An autonomous agent without a tested rollback path can turn a minor update into a data-loss event.
Self-hosting checklist
- Create a dedicated operating-system user or isolated VM for the service.
- Use a firewall to expose only the administration and application ports you need.
- Store model and integration secrets outside source code, with least-privilege scopes and rotation dates.
- Keep host, runtime, dependencies and agent images or binaries patched; subscribe to the project’s security advisories.
- Disable shell, filesystem, browser and network tools until each is needed and tested.
- Set explicit CPU, memory, disk and log limits so a loop cannot exhaust the machine.
- Require human approval for deletion, payments, account changes and messages sent to third parties.
- Keep audit logs, but redact tokens and personal data before shipping them to another system.
- Back up configuration and durable state separately from the host. Test a restore on a clean machine.
- Document the exact project version, model endpoint, enabled tools and firewall rules.
Security claims and what is actually established
Some roundups repeat claims about 138 OpenClaw CVEs in roughly two months, a “ClawBleed” vulnerability rated CVSS 8.8 and a “ClawHavoc” supply-chain campaign. Those claims could not be verified from an authoritative advisory in the available material, so they should not be treated as established facts. The sensible response is the same regardless: minimize privileges, isolate the process, pin dependencies, monitor logs and verify advisories from maintainers or recognized vulnerability databases.
