If you are searching for games like Skyrim or simply need worthwhile games to play while we wait for The Elder Scrolls 6, start by identifying what you miss most: creating a character, wandering into unexpected quests, first-person fantasy combat, a rich authored story, or difficult exploration. No single game reproduces every part of a Bethesda-style Elder Scrolls adventure.
The strongest choices are The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for story and side quests, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered for a closer first-person Elder Scrolls-style experience, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon for darker first-person fantasy, and Elden Ring for discovery and demanding combat. Returning to Skyrim with a new character or compatible mods is also a practical option.
How to choose a Skyrim alternative
“Open world” describes a large explorable environment with optional activities, freedom of movement and persistent progression. GameSpot’s February 9, 2026 guide notes that open-world games are not always role-playing games, so a huge map alone does not make a title a good Elder Scrolls substitute.
Use these questions before choosing:
- Who do you play? Do you want to create a self-directed character or follow an established hero such as Geralt?
- How do you explore? Are you looking for unstructured wandering and small discoveries, or a more directed narrative?
- What combat feels right? Some games are relaxed adventures; others expect repeated attempts against difficult enemies and bosses.
- Which fantasy tone? High fantasy, morally complicated medieval fiction and bleak dark fantasy produce very different moods.
- How much role-playing do you want? Consider skill builds, equipment choices, party systems and whether multiplayer is part of the design.
- Where will you play? Platform and edition availability can differ by region and can change after an article is published.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — best for story and side quests
Why it fits
GamesRadar describes The Witcher 3 as a story-driven open-world RPG, while PC Gamer highlights its landscapes and memorable quests. Its world is full of optional contracts, character stories and decisions whose consequences are often uncomfortable rather than clearly heroic. If your favorite Skyrim memories involve wandering away from the main quest and finding a surprisingly elaborate story, this is the strongest recommendation.
The game’s major difference is that you do not invent an anonymous adventurer. You play Geralt, an established monster hunter with a defined history, relationships and motivations. That fixed identity lets the writing focus on nuanced choices and long-running character arcs, but it removes the blank-slate role-play that makes Skyrim feel personal.
What to expect from exploration
The map supports free travel, but the experience is more authored than a typical Bethesda sandbox. Villages, contracts and side quests are built around written scenarios and recurring characters. You can leave the main story for long stretches, yet the game continually pulls you toward narrative threads rather than relying only on environmental surprise.
Combat and progression
Combat combines swordplay, signs, alchemy and equipment choices. It is real-time and active, but the main appeal is not relentless boss difficulty. You can adjust difficulty to make fights more or less demanding, allowing the game to serve players who want a substantial adventure without the repeated failure loop associated with tougher action RPGs.

Choose it if

- You prefer a developed protagonist to character creation.
- You enjoy moral ambiguity and a directed fantasy story inside a large world.
Skip it if
Choose another game if your priority is pretending to be anyone you want, switching freely between radically different identities or treating every town as a systemic sandbox.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered — the closest Elder Scrolls direction
Why it fits
GamingBible reports an April 22, 2025 release and presents Oblivion Remastered as a close Skyrim-like experience. It retains the Elder Scrolls premise that makes the wait for the sixth mainline game especially difficult: create a character, choose how to develop skills, travel through a fantasy province and let optional activities compete with the central plot.
For a Skyrim player, the appeal is not merely that both games use swords and magic. It is the combination of first-person presentation, character freedom, quest hubs, collectible equipment and the ability to ignore the intended route for hours. That makes this the first game to try when you want the recognizable Elder Scrolls rhythm rather than a different interpretation of open-world fantasy.

What changes from Skyrim
Oblivion is an older design reworked for modern hardware, so its quests, progression systems and world structure reflect a different era. The remaster can make the setting easier to revisit visually, but it does not turn the game into The Elder Scrolls V. Expect a distinct province, different pacing and its own balance of systems.

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon — first-person fantasy with a darker edge
Why it fits
GamingBible reports a May 23, 2025 release and describes Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon as a dark-fantasy game with first-person combat and progression. It is a useful choice when you want the camera perspective and character-driven advancement associated with Skyrim but would welcome a more oppressive atmosphere.
The setting changes the emotional contract. Instead of Skyrim’s mixture of heroic adventure, folklore and occasional horror, Tainted Grail leans into decay and dark fantasy. That can make exploration feel more threatening and the world less comfortable to inhabit. The result is not a direct Elder Scrolls clone; it is a smaller, moodier alternative built around similar first-person expectations.

Approach it as an exploration RPG rather than a promise of unlimited systemic freedom. You create a character, improve capabilities and investigate a dangerous world, but the tone and structure are designed around a specific dark-fantasy setting. Players who want a cheerful high-fantasy power trip may find it too bleak.

Elden Ring — best for discovery and demanding combat
Why it fits
PC Gamer characterizes Elden Ring as a large and dangerous world where exploration leads to encounters, with extensive build-crafting choices and demanding boss combat. It is an excellent answer to the question “What game rewards me for walking toward the distant landmark?” You can find optional areas, unusual enemies and equipment that fundamentally change how your character plays.
Its freedom is expressed through discovery and combat problem-solving rather than through a relaxed town-and-quest sandbox. The world often withholds explanations, and progress may require learning an enemy’s patterns, changing equipment or approaching a region from another direction.

Combat expectations
Difficulty is the defining qualification. Elden Ring expects you to die, study encounters and improve. Build choices matter: weapons, attributes, spells and support tools can make a major difference, but no build removes the need to understand dangerous fights. If you want calm wandering with occasional uncomplicated battles, this is not the closest match.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Role-playing style
You create a character and can experiment with markedly different builds. The game supports a solo adventure and includes multiplayer systems, but its identity remains an action RPG centered on exploration and bosses. It does not provide the same everyday-life fantasy as joining guilds, buying a house or casually role-playing a citizen of a province.
Choose it if
- You enjoy uncovering secrets without constant map guidance.
- You want combat mastery and build experimentation to drive progression.
- You consider a difficult boss a compelling destination rather than an obstacle to avoid.
Skyrim itself — the most practical fallback
PC Gamer emphasizes Skyrim’s density of small discoveries, quests and mod support. If you have not played recently, starting a different character can make familiar content feel new: choose a role you never tried, restrict fast travel, pursue a particular faction or build around a weapon and skill combination you previously ignored.
Mods can extend that return indefinitely, but compatibility depends on the exact edition, platform and load order. Console players generally have a different selection and installation process from PC players. Check the documentation for your edition before adding a large mod list, and keep a clean save so that a problematic mod can be removed without losing your entire playthrough.

Match the game to your priority
| If you want… | Start with… | Reason | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Written quests with difficult moral decisions | The Witcher 3 | Geralt’s story and extensive optional content are the focus | You cannot create a blank-slate protagonist |
| A created character in a familiar first-person fantasy structure | Oblivion Remastered | It is the most direct Elder Scrolls-style option in this list | Its design comes from an older game, even after modernization |
| First-person fantasy with a bleak atmosphere | Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon | Dark fantasy and progression are central to its identity | It is not a broad, relaxed Skyrim sandbox |
| Exploration where every detour may become a difficult encounter | Elden Ring | Discovery, builds and boss challenges reinforce one another | Combat is much less forgiving |
| The exact Elder Scrolls formula | Skyrim with a new build or compatible mods | You retain the setting, systems and familiar freedom | You may have already seen much of its content |
Platform and edition checklist
- Identify your hardware. Note whether you are buying for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2.
- Open the regional storefront. Search the exact game title and confirm that the listing is available in your country.
- Check the edition name. Remastered, standard, complete and bundled editions can have different features or system requirements.
- Confirm generation support. A listing for Xbox Series X/S or PS5 does not automatically mean the same package runs on older hardware.
- Check physical versus digital availability. A platform may have a digital release without a locally stocked disc, or vice versa.
- Verify mod support separately. Mod availability is edition- and platform-dependent, particularly for Skyrim.
What not to expect from these alternatives
- No perfect substitute: The Witcher 3 supplies authored storytelling, while Elden Ring emphasizes challenge; neither reproduces every Elder Scrolls system.
- Open world does not mean consequence-free wandering: Some games guide you through narrative arcs, and others use combat difficulty to control where you can safely travel.
- First-person view is not identical role-playing: Tainted Grail and Oblivion Remastered share a perspective, but their tone, progression and world design differ.
- A larger map is not automatically better: The relevant question is whether optional content matches the way you like to spend time.
Final recommendation
Choose Oblivion Remastered when your priority is a created character and the closest available Elder Scrolls-style structure. Choose The Witcher 3 when memorable writing and side quests matter more than authoring your own identity. Choose Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon for a darker first-person fantasy direction, and Elden Ring when exploration and punishing combat are the reason you play open-world RPGs. If none of those trade-offs appeal, a fresh Skyrim build with carefully checked mods remains a completely valid way to spend the wait.
