The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition is the strongest alternative when you want a story-heavy fantasy RPG. Choose Skyrim for the most player-directed sandbox, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 for a large party-based JRPG, and Pokémon Legends: Arceus for exploration built around catching and research. If your priority is physics-driven experimentation rather than a different setting, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom remains the benchmark on Switch.
“Open world” does not mean the same thing in every game here. Skyrim and The Witcher 3 offer broad, continuous worlds; Xenoblade Chronicles 3 uses large connected regions; Pokémon Legends: Arceus uses open zones. That distinction matters as much as the setting or combat system.

How to choose an open-world RPG on Switch
Start with the shape of the world
A seamless world lets you travel broadly without repeatedly selecting separate stages or maps. Skyrim and The Witcher 3 are the clearest fits if that uninterrupted sense of travel is essential. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 provides a similar feeling of scale through large connected regions, but its geography is not identical to a single seamless sandbox. Pokémon Legends: Arceus offers open areas designed around specific expeditions, so it feels more focused and deliberate between excursions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This is the most important qualification behind the phrase “open-world RPG.” A game can provide discovery, optional routes and expansive landscapes without using one continuous map. If you want to roam in any direction for hours, prioritize Skyrim or The Witcher 3. If you prefer a sequence of substantial regions with a strong narrative route, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 may be a better fit. If you want short, purposeful trips built around finding creatures, choose Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
Match the combat model to your habits
- Real-time action: The Witcher 3, Skyrim and Tears of the Kingdom put direct movement and attacks at the center of play.
- Party-based JRPG battles: Xenoblade Chronicles 3 asks you to think about a group rather than one hero, including how the party is assembled and how its relationships develop.
- Creature battles: Pokémon Legends: Arceus makes finding, studying and battling creatures the core loop instead of treating collecting as a side activity.
These formats create different kinds of freedom. Action games let you solve encounters through your own movement and timing. A party RPG gives you freedom through composition and tactical decisions. Pokémon gives you freedom through what you investigate and which creatures you develop.
Decide whether you want authored quests or self-directed stories
The Witcher 3 is the strongest choice when quest writing, consequences and a mature fantasy setting are more important than building your own narrative. Skyrim is better when the appeal is deciding who your character becomes, which guilds to join and which distractions to follow. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is built around a large cast and the relationships inside a long-form JRPG. Pokémon Legends: Arceus is lighter and more activity-driven, with progression tied to research and collection. Tears of the Kingdom puts the least pressure on a prescribed route and the most on experimentation.

Why it is the best story-first alternative
The Witcher 3 is the clearest recommendation for someone who wants a sprawling 3D RPG with substantial writing after finishing a Zelda game. Its defining strength is narrative density: quests are not merely markers on a map, but situations with competing interests, difficult choices and consequences that can change how a story develops. The setting is mature, and its tone is substantially more serious than Nintendo’s fantasy adventures.
Nintendo Life’s 2026 RPG guide specifically presents The Witcher 3 as an excellent portable experience for readers seeking another sprawling 3D RPG. A current 2026 open-world roundup also places it among the leading Switch choices for narrative depth.

How its exploration differs from Zelda
The world is designed to pull you from one authored situation to another. You can explore widely, but the main reward is often what happens when you investigate a person, contract or local conflict rather than what you can construct from the environment. That makes the game feel denser and more quest-led than a physics sandbox.
The distinction is useful if you are choosing between discovery and drama. Tears of the Kingdom encourages experimentation with the environment; The Witcher 3 encourages attention to dialogue, context and the consequences of decisions. Both provide a large world, but they ask you to look for different kinds of meaning in it.

What to expect on Switch
The Complete Edition is an ambitious third-party version of a large RPG, so its appeal is access to a substantial, story-led experience in portable form rather than a first-party technical showcase. No single authoritative performance benchmark compares every game in this list under identical conditions, so judge it by its quest design and scope instead of assuming that a cross-game frame-rate ranking exists.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Why it is the best sandbox choice
Skyrim is the better alternative when the main attraction is deciding your own direction. Its open world supports player-directed character builds, guild involvement and side quests that can emerge from simply following an unexpected lead. You can approach it as a focused role-playing campaign or allow it to become a sequence of unrelated detours.
Current Switch open-world roundups consistently treat Skyrim as one of the platform’s core open-world options. Its strength is not a single prescribed route; it is the ability to define what your character is interested in and let the world accumulate around those decisions.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Build freedom and emergent play
The game’s progression is most satisfying when you have a clear idea of the kind of character you want to play, then allow the world to complicate that plan. Guilds provide longer arcs, while side quests can create a sense that your character is developing a personal history outside the main story. This is a different form of narrative from The Witcher 3: the emphasis is on the story that emerges from your choices of activity, not only on authored consequences within individual quests.

Skyrim offers broad travel and self-directed objectives, but it is not a physics laboratory. Its freedom comes from role-playing, exploration and the accumulation of skills and affiliations. If you want to experiment with objects and solve environmental problems in unexpected ways, Tears of the Kingdom is closer to that experience. If you want to decide what sort of adventurer you are and which organizations matter to you, Skyrim is the stronger match.
Who should choose it
- Players who value a flexible character concept more than a tightly authored protagonist.
- Anyone who enjoys guilds, optional quests and wandering without a fixed itinerary.
- Readers who want an open world that can become a personal sandbox over a long playthrough.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3
Why it is the best large-scale JRPG alternative
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is the choice for players who want the scale and commitment of a major party-based JRPG. Its appeal comes from a large cast, relationships among party members and broad regions that reward sustained exploration. The experience is less about creating a solitary adventurer and more about watching a group develop while managing how that group functions in battle.
RPG coverage describes the Xenoblade series as massive and sprawling, while Nintendo Life’s guide uses similar language for the series’ large-scale quest design. That scale is the reason to choose it, but it also explains why it should not be treated as a one-to-one replacement for a seamless open-world game.
Understand its world structure
The game uses large connected regions. They can provide the visual and exploratory sense of a huge world, yet they are not the same as Skyrim’s uninterrupted map. If your buying decision depends on crossing an entire continent without entering a separate region, check this distinction first.

Party relationships as progression
Progression is tied not only to an individual character but also to the party’s composition and relationships. That gives the game a different rhythm from action RPGs: exploration feeds into a wider group story, and combat decisions are shaped by how the team works together. Choose it when you enjoy learning a cast and seeing the world through a long-form JRPG structure.
Switch 2 edition timing
Nintendo’s 2026 catalog lists Xenoblade Chronicles 3 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition with a listed release date of December 3, 2026. Treat that as the catalog date attached to the Switch 2 edition, and verify the edition available in your region before buying. The original Switch release and the Switch 2 edition should not be assumed to be the same product.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Pokémon Legends: Arceus
Why it is the best creature-focused exploration game
Pokémon Legends: Arceus shifts the open-world formula toward observation, research and collection. The central loop is not simply reaching a dungeon or clearing a quest chain: you explore an area, find creatures, study them and build knowledge through repeated encounters before battling or capturing them.
That structure makes it a lighter alternative to the darker storytelling of The Witcher 3 and the long-form party drama of Xenoblade Chronicles 3. It is also more structured than Zelda’s free-form traversal. The open zones give you room to search, but each expedition has a clear research purpose.
Open zones rather than one seamless world
Pokémon Legends: Arceus belongs in an open-world conversation because its zones support free movement and discovery, not because it uses one uninterrupted map. Expect to select an area, investigate it thoroughly and return with new information. This format suits players who prefer a sequence of focused objectives over a single world that remains fully continuous from beginning to end.

Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild: the benchmark choices
When the right answer is still Zelda
If what you miss is physics-driven exploration, puzzle experimentation and the ability to approach a problem from several directions, Tears of the Kingdom is not merely another option; it is the standard against which the alternatives feel different. Its open world is built around player-led discovery and environmental experimentation, so it addresses a specific desire that story-heavy or party-based RPGs do not.
Breath of the Wild belongs beside it as the earlier benchmark for the same broad style of exploration. Choose between them according to which entry you want to play, rather than treating either one as a substitute for the other games’ narrative or party systems.
Current Switch 2 catalog information
Nintendo’s official catalog lists The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition with a listed release date of June 5, 2025. The date is for that edition, so confirm whether a listing is for the original Switch release or the Switch 2 version before purchase.

A practical decision framework
Choose by your first priority
- Story and consequences: Start with The Witcher 3.
- Self-directed character and guild play: Choose Skyrim.
- Party relationships and JRPG scale: Choose Xenoblade Chronicles 3.
- Catching, research and creature battles: Choose Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
- Physics and puzzle experimentation: Choose Tears of the Kingdom.
Use the second priority to break ties
If two games appeal to you, compare the way they structure the world before comparing settings. A player who wants one continuous map should favor Skyrim or The Witcher 3 over Xenoblade Chronicles 3 or Pokémon Legends: Arceus. A player who enjoys large regions but prefers a guided long-form party story may find Xenoblade Chronicles 3 more satisfying than a pure sandbox.
Next compare combat. Real-time action favors direct control, party-based battles favor composition and planning, and Pokémon’s creature battles make collection part of the progression system. Finally, decide whether you want an authored narrative, an emergent personal story or a research-and-collection loop.
Switch edition and buying checks
Before buying a physical or digital copy, confirm the exact edition and hardware target. Nintendo’s catalog now includes Switch 2 editions for selected games, and the listed dates are attached to those editions rather than automatically applying to every Switch version. Check the regional listing, edition name and compatibility information on the retailer or Nintendo store page.
Do not use a single performance claim to rank this group. The available material does not establish one authoritative, directly comparable benchmark across all of these games. The meaningful differences are structural: first-party design versus ambitious third-party ports, seamless worlds versus connected regions, and action combat versus party or creature systems.

Final recommendation
Buy The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition if you want the most substantial story-led replacement for a Zelda-style adventure. Pick Skyrim when personal freedom matters more than authored drama. Choose Xenoblade Chronicles 3 for a huge party RPG, Pokémon Legends: Arceus for creature-focused exploration, and Tears of the Kingdom when physics and experimentation are the feature you actually want.
