Red Dead Redemption 2 is the best overall choice while you wait for GTA 6. Its detailed world, believable characters, unscripted encounters and Rockstar-style environmental detail deliver the closest match for grounded immersion. Choose Cyberpunk 2077 if you specifically want a dense city, driving and criminal jobs; Ghost of Tsushima for cinematic historical scenery; Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 for demanding historical simulation; or Horizon Forbidden West for spectacular graphics in a science-fiction world.

Rockstar currently lists Grand Theft Auto VI for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and says it plays best on PlayStation 5. None of the alternatives duplicates GTA’s modern crime sandbox, so the right pick depends on whether you value contemporary cities, realistic systems, cinematic landscapes or visual spectacle most.

How to choose a realistic-looking open-world game

“Realistic graphics” can mean several different things. A historically grounded setting may feel more believable than a futuristic city even when the latter has more advanced lighting. A game can also look realistic while using highly stylized combat or fantastical creatures. Use these distinctions before choosing:

1. Red Dead Redemption 2: the best overall realism and immersion

Red Dead Redemption 2 is the clearest recommendation if your priority is a believable world that feels inhabited rather than a checklist of activities. GameSpot describes a detailed Wild West shaped by the decline of the frontier, with environmental detail and character behavior that reward simply moving through the world. It is a western rather than a modern crime game, but it carries the same commitment to place and incidental storytelling that makes a Rockstar open world compelling.

Why it feels realistic

  • Daily care has consequences: you look after the player character and horse instead of treating them as disposable vehicles.
  • Unscripted situations: random NPC encounters can interrupt travel, making roads and settlements feel less predictable.
  • Material detail: the world is built around weather, animals, settlements and period-specific routines rather than generic map icons.
  • Story and setting align: the narrative about the death of the Wild West reinforces the changing landscapes and social tensions you see while exploring.

The result is a slow-burn experience. Travel, camp life and preparation occupy more time than they would in an arcade-style action game. That pace is the feature for players who want to inhabit a world; it is the main drawback if you want instant access to cars, dense traffic and rapid-fire missions.

What you do between missions

Exploration is not merely transit between story markers. You can care for your horse, respond to strangers, hunt, investigate remote locations and let incidental events develop without a quest-giver directing every minute. These systems make the world feel authored and systemic at once: major chapters provide structure, while the journey supplies surprises.

Platforms and online play

GameSpot lists Red Dead Redemption 2 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC. It also lists Red Dead Online, giving you a separate multiplayer way to spend time in the same setting after the campaign. Store editions and backward-compatibility behavior can vary, so verify the listing for your hardware and region before buying.

Choose it if…

  • You want the most grounded world and strongest environmental immersion on this list.
  • You enjoyed Rockstar’s attention to incidental characters and physical detail.
  • You are comfortable with a measured pace and survival-style upkeep.

2. Cyberpunk 2077: the best urban sandbox alternative

Cyberpunk 2077 is the strongest substitute for the specific fantasy of driving through a large city, taking criminal jobs and moving between story missions and side activities. Night City is futuristic, so it is not realistic as a genre setting, but its density and urban structure answer the question many GTA players actually mean: “What can I play when I want a modern-feeling city with vehicles, crime and constant activity?”

Why it matches GTA’s urban appeal

  • Large city environment: Night City is organized around distinct districts, roads and vertical spaces rather than open countryside alone.
  • Driving: futuristic vehicles make cruising and rapid movement central to the experience.
  • Criminal work and side content: jobs, side activities and faction conflicts keep the map active beyond the main story.
  • Character upgrades: cybernetic enhancements let you shape how your character approaches combat and exploration.

The trade-off is perspective and genre. The game supports first-person play as its defining view, with a third-person perspective available in limited contexts, so it does not present driving and shootouts exactly like a traditional third-person GTA campaign. Its cybernetics, megacorporations and speculative technology also make it imaginative rather than historically or physically realistic.

Phantom Liberty and the campaign’s scale

Phantom Liberty adds another substantial storyline. If you want a second major narrative after finishing the main campaign, the expansion gives Night City a further spy-thriller direction rather than simply adding a few errands. Check the edition description carefully: the base game and expansion may be sold together or separately depending on platform and storefront.

Platforms

GameSpot lists Cyberpunk 2077 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Switch 2. Performance and feature support can differ significantly between older and newer hardware, so confirm the current store page and edition for your system.

Choose it if…

  • A crowded city, driving and criminal missions matter more than a realistic premise.
  • You prefer build choices and cybernetic upgrades to horse care or historical routines.
  • You want a first-person presentation and are willing to accept science-fiction world rules.

3. Ghost of Tsushima: the best cinematic historical world

Ghost of Tsushima is the pick for players who want a beautiful, coherent landscape and deliberate third-person combat rather than contemporary vehicles or crime missions. GameSpot highlights its samurai swordplay, stealth, haiku and bamboo activities, along with saturated mountains and fields that make exploration feel like moving through a composed film.

What makes the world convincing

The setting is historical in inspiration, and the activities fit the fiction. Haiku composition, bamboo challenges, shrines and stealth routes are not random mini-games pasted onto a map; they express the protagonist’s identity and the island’s culture. Wind-guided navigation and strong landscape silhouettes make the journey legible without turning every discovery into a conventional marker.

Combat and pacing

Sword fights are deliberate rather than spray-and-pray gun battles. You read attacks, change stances and use stealth when a direct confrontation is risky. That creates tension and visual clarity, but it also means the game does not reproduce GTA’s gunplay, vehicle chases or contemporary satire. Its rhythm alternates between focused encounters and quiet rides through fields, coasts and mountain roads.

  • Also included is Undead Nightmare, the iconic horror story that transforms the world of Red Dead Redemption into an apocalyptic fight for survival against a zombie horde.

Platforms

GameSpot lists Ghost of Tsushima for PS4, PS5 and PC. The core open-world experience is available across those platforms, while exact technical options depend on the edition and hardware. Confirm the current PC or console listing before purchase.

Choose it if…

  • You want a cinematic world where scenery and exploration are as important as missions.
  • Third-person sword combat and stealth appeal more than driving.
  • You prefer historical atmosphere without the heavier simulation friction of a medieval RPG.

4. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2: the best systemic historical realism

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is for players who use “realistic” to mean systems, limitations and consequences rather than only high-resolution textures. GameSpot describes it as an open-world RPG set in realistic 15th-century medieval Europe. You play an ordinary person, not an instantly powerful fantasy hero, and routine needs can affect how prepared you are for the next task.

Systems that create friction

  • Personal upkeep: bathing and similar routines matter to how you move through society and the world.
  • Saving has a cost: a special drink is required to save, so you cannot treat quick-saving as an unlimited pause button.
  • Ordinary protagonist: progress comes from learning, equipment and experience rather than supernatural abilities.
  • Historical context: settlements, conflicts and social rules are designed around medieval Europe instead of a modern power fantasy.

Those systems can make small decisions meaningful, but they also demand patience. Travel, preparation and failure are part of the design. If you want to sprint from one explosive set piece to another, the game may feel restrictive; if you want an open world that asks you to live by its rules, the friction is the attraction.

How it differs from Red Dead Redemption 2

Both games pursue grounded immersion, but they do it differently. Red Dead Redemption 2 emphasizes cinematic storytelling, character relationships and a reactive frontier. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 emphasizes role-playing systems and historical constraints. Pick the former for Rockstar-style drama and spontaneous encounters; pick the latter for a world where preparation, social context and limited abilities shape every plan.

Platforms

GameSpot lists Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. There is no older-console listing in that platform description, so players on PS4 or Xbox One should not assume compatibility.

Choose it if…

  • You want historical immersion and consequences more than spectacle.
  • You enjoy first-person role-playing and learning systems over time.
  • You accept slower pacing, ordinary equipment and the possibility that preparation fails.

5. Horizon Forbidden West: the best high-detail science-fiction spectacle

Horizon Forbidden West is the graphics-first recommendation. GameSpot describes dense, detailed open worlds populated by machine creatures and distinct tribes. It offers broad landscapes, elaborate mechanical animals and visual variety that can showcase a current console or PC, even though the premise is explicitly post-apocalyptic science fiction.

Why it stands out visually

The world combines natural scenery with engineered creatures, tribal settlements and remnants of a lost technological civilization. Dense environments and machine encounters create constant visual contrast: beaches, forests and ruins are not just backdrops, while each machine type changes how you read the terrain and plan an attack.

Combat and exploration

Combat revolves around studying machine behavior, targeting components and selecting suitable weapons. Exploration is more traversal-focused and action-oriented than the slower routines in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. The result is a polished spectacle with strategic combat, not a simulation of ordinary life.

Platforms

GameSpot presents Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC. As with the other recommendations, check the current store entry for edition contents and technical requirements before purchasing.

Choose it if…

  • Your top priority is a highly detailed, varied world that shows off hardware.
  • You enjoy third-person action against machines and human factions.
  • You are willing to trade realistic subject matter for imaginative science-fiction design.

Which game is closest to the GTA 6 experience?

No alternative reproduces all of GTA’s ingredients. GTA 6 is currently presented by Rockstar as a contemporary crime-focused open world for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, while the five games above divide that appeal among different strengths.

If you want… Choose Why
Rockstar-style world detail and immersion Red Dead Redemption 2 Reactive encounters, character routines and a richly authored setting.
A city, driving and criminal jobs Cyberpunk 2077 Night City supplies the urban sandbox, with futuristic rather than realistic technology.
Historical scenery and cinematic exploration Ghost of Tsushima Beautiful landscapes, stealth and sword combat create a focused historical journey.
Grounded systems and everyday consequences Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Upkeep, limited saving and an ordinary protagonist make preparation matter.
The most eye-catching environments Horizon Forbidden West Dense landscapes and machine creatures deliver spectacle over realism.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Start with the setting. Select Cyberpunk 2077 for a modern-feeling city, Red Dead Redemption 2 for a frontier, Ghost of Tsushima or Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 for history, and Horizon Forbidden West for science fiction.
  2. Decide how much friction you want. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 expects the most preparation. Red Dead Redemption 2 adds lighter care and travel routines. Ghost of Tsushima and Horizon Forbidden West move more directly into action.
  3. Choose your combat view. Cyberpunk 2077 and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 emphasize first-person play; the other recommendations center on third-person presentation.
  4. Match the hardware. Verify the platform table against the current store listing, especially if you own PS4, Xbox One or Switch 2.
  5. Think about your waiting period. For a long, immersive campaign, choose Red Dead Redemption 2 or Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. For immediate urban activity, choose Cyberpunk 2077. For shorter scenic sessions, Ghost of Tsushima or Horizon Forbidden West may fit better.

What to know before buying

  • Platform listings can change: editions, backward compatibility and PC requirements are storefront-specific. Confirm availability for your country and hardware at checkout.
  • “Realistic graphics” is not the same as realistic subject matter: Cyberpunk 2077 and Horizon Forbidden West can look highly detailed while remaining science fiction.
  • Open-world scale does not guarantee freedom: each game balances authored missions with systems differently. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 gives more weight to rules and preparation; Ghost of Tsushima gives more weight to cinematic direction.
  • Online content is not universal: Red Dead Redemption 2 includes Red Dead Online, while the other descriptions here focus on single-player worlds and campaigns.

Bottom line

Start with Red Dead Redemption 2 if you want one recommendation: it combines realistic presentation, environmental detail, spontaneous encounters and a slow, immersive rhythm better than any other option here. Choose Cyberpunk 2077 when the part of GTA you miss is the city and criminal sandbox. Choose Ghost of Tsushima for cinematic historical beauty, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 for uncompromising systems, and Horizon Forbidden West when visual spectacle matters more than realism.
