If entering buildings is the part of GTA 6 you are most excited about, start with Cyberpunk 2077, ideally the edition that includes Phantom Liberty. Its modern city is packed with authored apartments, clubs, shops, megabuildings and quest spaces. Choose Fallout 4 for a more systemic interior sandbox, Red Dead Redemption 2 for a slower and deeply authored frontier, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II for grounded medieval role-play, or The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt when interiors are most valuable as parts of investigations and story quests.

There is no reliable published count of enterable buildings for these games, so the useful comparison is not a made-up total. It is how often interiors matter, what you do inside them, how much the world reacts to your actions, and whether the pace feels like the modern-city freedom you want from GTA.

Quick comparison

Game Interior focus What interiors are used for Pace and style Best match for a GTA 6 fan who wants
Cyberpunk 2077 with Phantom Liberty Very high in a dense modern city Combat, stealth, dialogue, shopping, exploration, apartments and quest spaces Fast first-person action with a contemporary setting The closest urban substitute and the strongest sense of moving through a lived-in city
Fallout 4 Very high, but spread across a ruined open world Scavenging, crafting, combat, vaults, factories, offices, homes, dungeons and settlement progression Systemic first-person role-playing with a survivalist rhythm Buildings that function as gameplay systems rather than scenery
Red Dead Redemption 2 Moderate and highly curated Story scenes, shops, saloons, homesteads, camps, train stations and mission locations Deliberate frontier simulation and story-led wandering Memorable, believable places rather than maximum building access
Kingdom Come: Deliverance II High in towns and quest areas Daily survival, conversations, investigation, caves, taverns, homes, castles and quests Grounded first-person medieval role-play with demanding combat Immersion, social spaces and historical detail
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Moderate, focused on authored locations Investigations, conversations, crypts, caves, castles, inns, villages and set-piece quests Quest-driven fantasy adventure Interiors that advance a story or reveal a mystery

“High” and “moderate” here describe the role interiors play, not a measured percentage of buildings. Each game uses a different definition of exploration: Cyberpunk emphasizes urban density, Fallout emphasizes systems, Red Dead emphasizes authenticity, Kingdom Come emphasizes routine and role-play, and The Witcher emphasizes narrative purpose.

What makes an interior worth exploring?

An enterable door is not automatically meaningful. For this list, an interior earns its place when it gives you a reason to stay: a fight that can be approached in different ways, clues that change an investigation, useful loot, a character interaction, a crafting or settlement decision, or environmental details that deepen the setting.

Three questions separate the games:

  • Density: How often does your route through the open world lead to a building, dungeon, home, shop or other enclosed location that matters?
  • Variety: Do interiors support combat only, or also stealth, dialogue, investigation, looting, crafting and environmental storytelling?
  • Reactivity: Do systems, NPC routines, factions or your choices change what happens inside?

Those criteria explain why no single game wins for everyone. A player who wants to walk into modern businesses and apartments will value a different experience from someone who wants every abandoned factory to become a scavenging puzzle.

1. Cyberpunk 2077: the closest modern-city substitute

Pick Cyberpunk 2077 first if your mental picture of GTA 6 is a dense contemporary city full of buildings you can actually enter. Night City concentrates apartments, clubs, shops, megabuildings and quest spaces into a setting designed for movement between streets and interiors. The result feels less like visiting a few isolated set pieces and more like switching constantly between public spaces, private rooms and mission locations.

Why its interiors stand out

Cyberpunk’s interiors are authored rather than interchangeable. A megabuilding can function as housing, a social hub and a route into a mission. A club or shop is both a place to conduct business and a piece of the city’s visual language. Quest spaces use rooms, corridors and vertical layouts to support conversation, combat or infiltration, so the building itself often becomes part of the problem you are solving.

The first-person viewpoint makes this density especially immediate. You notice the transition from a crowded street to a security checkpoint, a lift, a back room or an apartment because the game keeps you close to the space instead of presenting it as a distant backdrop. That is the strongest answer on this list to the simple question, “Can I go inside and look around?”

What the expansion changes

Phantom Liberty expands the game with Dogtown, giving the city-focused experience another major area and more authored spaces to investigate. If you are buying specifically for interior exploration, an edition that includes the expansion is the most straightforward purchase path. Check the current store listing for your console or PC, because edition names and platform availability can differ.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it if contemporary architecture, apartments, nightlife and commercial spaces matter more than historical realism.
  • Choose it if you want fast first-person combat alongside exploration.
  • Choose it if you want the most direct bridge from the urban fantasy of GTA to another open-world city.

It is not a replacement for GTA’s exact tone or criminal sandbox. Its world is a science-fiction city and its quests are more deliberately authored. That difference is a benefit when your priority is memorable interiors rather than recreating a specific kind of crime story.

2. Fallout 4: the strongest systemic interior sandbox

Choose Fallout 4 when the building itself should generate gameplay. Its ruined open world is filled with homes, offices, factories, vaults and dungeons. You enter to search, fight, collect materials, uncover a location’s history and carry what you find back into broader crafting and settlement progression.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why exploration keeps producing decisions

Fallout 4 treats an interior as a resource and a risk. A derelict building may contain salvage for crafting, enemies that make every room a tactical problem, or a route into a larger location. Vaults and factories are not simply scenic tours: they turn navigation, combat and scavenging into one loop. The value of a room can remain practical even after its associated quest is finished because materials feed the systems outside it.

This is the most systemic choice in the group. The game does not require every interior to deliver a cinematic story beat. Instead, it gives you reasons to inspect desks, corners, containers and work areas, then connect the results to equipment, settlements and future expeditions. That structure rewards players who enjoy making their own objectives.

Edition details

The Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition includes the base game, six official expansions and more than 150 Creation Club items, according to Bethesda’s official edition description. Confirm the contents and platform listing before buying, especially if you already own the base game or an earlier bundle.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it if you want ruined buildings, vaults and industrial sites to support scavenging, crafting and combat at the same time.
  • Choose it if you prefer emergent stories and player-made routines to a tightly choreographed campaign.
  • Choose it if settlement progression gives you a reason to revisit the consequences of what you find.

Fallout 4 is less like a modern city tour than Cyberpunk 2077. Its interiors are often damaged, abandoned or hostile, and the surrounding world is a post-apocalyptic landscape. That contrast is exactly why it works as a waiting game: it offers a much deeper “what is behind this door?” loop, even when the door leads to somewhere very different from Los Santos or Vice City.

3. Red Dead Redemption 2: the best authored-world alternative

Pick Red Dead Redemption 2 if you want every interior visit to feel like part of a larger frontier life. It offers fewer universally accessible buildings than a dedicated interior sandbox, but saloons, stores, homesteads, camps, train stations and mission locations are carefully integrated into the world’s routines and story.

Why curation matters

Red Dead’s strength is not a promise that every structure can be entered. It is the way its usable spaces support a believable life. A saloon is a social location, a store is part of a town’s economy, a camp is a changing base, and a train station connects travel with the rhythm of the frontier. Mission interiors are memorable because they are staged as events rather than anonymous rooms.

The game’s slower pace changes how you read a building. You may arrive on horseback, spend time in conversation, observe a town’s activity and then enter a location when the story or your own curiosity gives you a reason. The world rewards wandering between missions, but it does not turn every house into a loot container. That restraint makes the interiors that do matter feel more authored.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it if atmosphere, character routines and environmental storytelling matter more than maximum access.
  • Choose it if you want a story-led journey with activities and a frontier setting.
  • Choose it if a deliberate simulation sounds appealing after the faster pace of modern action games.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is therefore a poor choice only if your definition of exploration is “open every door.” If your definition is “remember the places I visited and why they mattered,” it is one of the strongest options available.

4. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II: grounded medieval interiors

Choose Kingdom Come: Deliverance II for first-person medieval role-play in which interiors are part of ordinary survival and investigation. Towns, taverns, castles, homes, caves and quest locations give the world a practical texture: you are not merely passing through a map marker, you are moving through spaces where people live, trade, shelter and conduct business.

How it differs from GTA-style exploration

The appeal is immersion rather than spectacle. A tavern can be a social setting, a home can hold clues or conflict, and a castle can define the stakes of a quest. Interiors fit into a historical world, so the game asks you to pay attention to routines, conversations and physical context instead of relying on futuristic technology or explosive set pieces.

The first-person perspective reinforces that grounded approach. Entering a room is part of investigating a place, not simply loading a combat arena. Caves and other enclosed locations add variety without abandoning the historical setting.

Trade-offs

The pace and combat are demanding compared with a typical action sandbox. If you want immediate, forgiving movement between gunfights and vehicle chases, this is a poor substitute. If you value role-play, social spaces and the feeling that a building belongs to a specific community, its slower rhythm is a major advantage.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it if historical immersion matters more than contemporary spectacle.
  • Choose it if you want interiors to support conversation, investigation and daily routines.
  • Choose it if you are comfortable learning a more demanding combat and role-playing system.

5. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: quest-first interior exploration

Choose The Witcher 3 when you want interiors to reveal a mystery, advance a conversation or stage a quest. Villages, inns, crypts, caves, castles and other story locations give Geralt spaces to investigate, negotiate and fight through.

Interiors as narrative tools

The Witcher 3 does not aim to make every building a miniature sandbox. Its interiors are valuable because they serve authored quests. An inn can gather characters and information; a crypt or cave can turn an investigation into a dangerous search; a castle can make political stakes physical. The location is memorable because of what you learn or decide there.

This quest-first design makes it an excellent alternative when the word “exploration” means following leads and uncovering stories rather than entering every shop on a street. The fantasy setting also provides variety that a modern-city game cannot: rural homes, fortified spaces, underground ruins and supernatural locations all coexist within the same broad adventure.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it if investigations and character-driven quests are your main reason to explore.
  • Choose it if fantasy villages, inns, crypts, caves and castles sound more appealing than contemporary architecture.
  • Choose it if you want interiors to carry narrative weight instead of functioning mainly as loot routes.

The Witcher 3 is the least direct GTA substitute on the list in setting and systems. It earns its place because it demonstrates another way interiors can matter: a room can be important because it changes what you understand, not because it contains the most objects.

  2. Ruins, vaults and factories with loot and crafting consequences: Fallout 4.
  3. Frontier towns and story locations that feel lived in: Red Dead Redemption 2.
  4. Taverns, homes and castles embedded in daily historical life: Kingdom Come: Deliverance II.
  5. Crypts, caves and castles that exist to advance investigations: The Witcher 3.

Choose by pace and combat

  • Fastest and most action-oriented: Cyberpunk 2077.
  • Systemic exploration with combat and crafting: Fallout 4.
  • Most deliberate and simulation-minded: Red Dead Redemption 2.
  • Most demanding grounded role-play: Kingdom Come: Deliverance II.
  • Most strongly organized around quests: The Witcher 3.

Choose by how much the world should react

Fallout 4 gives interiors the clearest mechanical consequences through scavenging, crafting and settlement progression. Cyberpunk 2077 uses interiors as authored spaces for missions and urban life. Red Dead Redemption 2 emphasizes routines and a coherent frontier. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II makes social and historical context central. The Witcher 3 places the greatest weight on investigation and story outcomes. None is objectively more reactive; they react in different ways.

Edition and platform checks before you buy

Store listings change by platform and region, so verify the current edition for your console or PC before checkout. Two edition paths are especially relevant to this shortlist:

  • Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition: a convenient purchase path when you want the base game together with Phantom Liberty and its Dogtown area. Confirm the exact platform listing.
  • Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition: includes the base game, six official expansions and more than 150 Creation Club items according to Bethesda’s edition description. Check whether those contents duplicate material you already own.

For the other three games, select the current version listed for your hardware and check whether any desired expansions or upgrades are bundled. The important decision is not a speculative price or stock claim; it is making sure the edition you purchase contains the content that supports the type of interior exploration you want.

A practical way to test your preference

If you are undecided, use a simple three-session test rather than judging from screenshots.

  1. Session one: follow the main route. Notice whether the game naturally moves you through interiors or whether most of your time is spent outside.
  2. Session two: ignore the objective. Enter optional buildings, investigate a town, or clear a location that is not required. This reveals whether curiosity is rewarded.
  3. Session three: pursue the systems. Scavenge and craft in Fallout 4, explore urban quest spaces in Cyberpunk 2077, observe routines in Red Dead Redemption 2, investigate social locations in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, or follow a side investigation in The Witcher 3.

After those sessions, ask which activity you wanted to repeat. If you kept looking for the next apartment or shop, choose Cyberpunk 2077. If you kept searching abandoned rooms for useful materials, choose Fallout 4. If you remembered characters and places more than individual loot, choose Red Dead Redemption 2. If conversations and historical context held your attention, choose Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. If clues and quest consequences did, choose The Witcher 3.

Bottom line

For the closest replacement for GTA-style urban interior density, play Cyberpunk 2077 with Phantom Liberty. For the deepest gameplay loop built around entering and stripping down locations, play Fallout 4. Red Dead Redemption 2, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt are better choices when atmosphere, historical or fantasy setting, and authored quests matter more than opening the maximum number of doors.
