There is no reliable, evidence-backed ranking of open-world games with the least sexual content from the information currently available. The safest way to choose is to define what “less” means to you, then read the current rating summary for the exact game, platform and region. Age labels alone are not enough, and an absent descriptor does not prove that a game contains no sexual material.

This guide explains how to screen games for sex scenes, nudity and sexual references, identifies open-world candidates that still need direct rating verification, and uses Red Dead Redemption 2 as a clearly documented contrast rather than a recommendation.

What “less sexual content” can mean

Adults use this preference in different ways. Before comparing games, choose the threshold that would make a title acceptable for you:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • No sexual scenes: You want to avoid depicted sexual activity, even if it is brief, implied or optional.
  • No nudity: Partial or full nudity is the deciding issue, regardless of whether a scene is sexual.
  • Few sexual references: Mild jokes, dialogue, advertisements, quests or background comments are acceptable only in small amounts.
  • Less than a known comparison game: You may be comfortable with some mature material but want substantially less than a game such as Red Dead Redemption 2.
  • No unexpected encounters: You are mainly concerned about random events, ambient dialogue or optional side content that can appear during exploration.

These are separate tests. A game can avoid explicit scenes yet still contain frequent sexual jokes, or it can include a short nude appearance without making sex a major theme. Tell yourself which combination matters most before you open a rating page. “Less” is a relative preference, not an official rating category.

Why an age label cannot answer the question

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) describes its categories as signals of suggested age appropriateness, not as a scale measuring one type of content. Its E10+ category can include “minimal suggestive themes,” while Mature 17+ games may include sexual content. Two games with the same category can therefore differ substantially in nudity, references and context.

ESRB content descriptors are more specific, but they still have limits. The system defines:

  • Sexual Content: non-explicit depictions of sexual behavior, potentially including partial nudity.
  • Sexual Themes: references to sex or sexuality.
  • Suggestive Themes: mild provocative references or materials.

ESRB says that descriptors indicate content that may have triggered a rating or may be of interest, and that they are applied relative to the assigned rating category. Its guide also cautions that descriptors “are not intended to be a complete listing of content.” In practical terms, a missing descriptor should be recorded as not listed by this rating source, not translated into “contains none.”

When an ESRB rating summary is available, it normally gives more context than the category and descriptor row. That summary may explain what happens, how briefly it appears, whether nudity is present, and whether the material is optional or unavoidable. For this particular preference, the summary is the decisive evidence.

US and regional ratings are not interchangeable

For a US purchase, start with the current ESRB entry. If you live elsewhere, check the rating authority used for your store, such as PEGI in relevant European markets, and read its content information rather than copying an ESRB conclusion. Regional systems can use different categories, descriptors and wording. A rating for a console release should not automatically be applied to a PC edition, remaster or later port.

Keep the authority, country, platform, edition and date checked in your notes. If a store page shows only an age icon and not a detailed explanation, look for the authority’s full listing. If no current summary exists for the exact version, the honest result is “not verified,” not “no sexual content.”

A verification method that works for any open-world game

Use the following process for every title on your shortlist. It prevents a familiar name or a low age category from doing the work of an actual content check.

  1. Define your boundary. Write down whether you are screening out sexual scenes, nudity, sexual references, or all three. If you are comparing against another game, name that comparison explicitly. A household rule such as “no nudity but mild references are acceptable” is easier to apply than a vague request for a “clean” game.
  2. Identify the exact product. Record the title, platform, edition, release year or remaster status, country and intended store. Open-world games often receive ports and updates, and a rating summary may be attached to a particular release.
  3. Find the current rating record. Use the rating authority used in your country and match the platform and edition you intend to play. Do not rely solely on a retailer’s abbreviated icon or an old review.
  4. Read every sexual-content descriptor. Look for Sexual Content, Sexual Themes, Suggestive Themes and Nudity. Do not treat one descriptor as interchangeable with another. “Suggestive Themes” does not answer the same question as “Sexual Content.”
  5. Read the full rating summary. Record the described behavior, whether nudity is partial or otherwise specified, the setting, the frequency and whether the event is optional, missable or part of the main path. Preserve the authority’s wording when it is precise.
  6. Separate sexual material from other mature content. Make separate notes for violence, gore, language, drugs, gambling, horror and disturbing themes. A game can be a poor fit for a sensitive player even when its sexual-content section is short.
  7. Check optionality carefully. Mark whether the material appears in the main story, a side quest, a random encounter, background detail or a player-triggered activity. Only call something avoidable when the summary or other authoritative information clearly supports that conclusion.
  8. Check the date and region. Ratings can be revised, and regional systems use different labels and wording. Keep the publication date or “last updated” date with your notes so you know how current the decision is.
  9. Resolve uncertainty before buying. If the summary is vague, the descriptor is missing, or the edition is not the one you plan to use, treat the answer as unknown. Look for a current official summary for that exact version rather than filling the gap with assumptions.

Open-world candidates and what is actually established

A 2026 GamesRadar roundup identifies The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim as open-world games, highlighting exploration and creative play. That establishes why they belong on a discovery shortlist, but it does not establish that either game has low sexual content. Direct, current regional rating summaries still need to be checked before either can be called a verified fit.

Game What is established Sexual-content decision Other maturity to track separately
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Included as an open-world game in GamesRadar’s 2026 roundup; the roundup praises exploration and creative play. Not established by the available evidence. Do not label it low in sexual content until the current rating summary for your region and platform is checked. Not stated in the available evidence; read the complete rating summary rather than inferring from its age category.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Included as an open-world game in the same roundup. Candidate for follow-up only. The available evidence does not support a sexual-content judgment. Not stated in the available evidence; record violence, language and other descriptors separately when you verify the title.
Red Dead Redemption 2 ESRB rates it M (Mature 17+). ESRB lists Nudity and Sexual Content and describes nudity plus brief sexual content in its rating summary. It should not appear on a “less sexual content” shortlist unless you are using it only as a comparison point. The M category signals broader mature material; consult the complete summary for the other descriptors.

The table deliberately leaves unknown cells unresolved. “Open world” describes structure and exploration, not a promise about sexual material. A game can be an excellent exploration title and still fail your personal boundary.

Why Red Dead Redemption 2 is a useful contrast

Red Dead Redemption 2 is the clearest documented example in this set because its ESRB entry explicitly includes both Nudity and Sexual Content. The summary describes nudity and brief sexual content, so a reader seeking no sexual scenes or no nudity has a concrete reason to exclude it. Someone who merely wants less than this game can use its summary as a baseline, but should still compare frequency, context and optionality rather than relying on the M label alone.

This example also shows why a title’s reputation is not a substitute for a rating summary. The relevant evidence is the descriptor and the wording of the official summary, not a claim that one game is universally “clean” or “adult.”

How to compare games once you have the summaries

After collecting official summaries, put each game on the same worksheet. The following columns force the distinctions that are most often lost in short recommendation lists.

Column What to record Why it matters
Explicit sexual scenes Whether the summary describes sexual behavior and whether it is brief, repeated, optional or unavoidable. A single missable scene is a different experience from recurring main-story material.
Nudity Any stated nudity, including whether the summary specifies partial nudity. Nudity can be the deciding issue even when sexual behavior is not shown.
Sexual references and themes Sexual Themes or Suggestive Themes, plus examples and frequency when the summary provides them. Some players avoid references and jokes as strictly as scenes.
Context and tone Whether material is comic, incidental, threatening, romantic, exploitative or otherwise framed by the summary. The same descriptor can feel very different depending on presentation.
Optionality Main path, side quest, random encounter, background detail or player-triggered activity. Optional content can be avoided only if the game clearly allows that avoidance.
Frequency Use “brief,” “occasional,” “repeated” or “not specified” only when the authority’s wording supports it. Frequency helps distinguish a one-time incident from a persistent theme without inventing a numerical score.
Violence and language Record these in separate fields from sexual content. Low sexual content does not mean low overall maturity.
Edition and region Platform, release edition, country rating authority and date checked. Prevents applying one version’s summary to another release.

Do not create a numerical “cleanliness score” unless every game has comparable evidence. If one summary gives detailed context and another only lists descriptors, mark the second comparison as uncertain instead of awarding it an artificial advantage. “Not specified” is a useful result; it is more honest than guessing.

What to do when a summary is incomplete

Official rating pages do not always describe every moment a player might encounter. ESRB’s own guide says, “Content Descriptors indicate content that may have triggered a particular rating and/or may be of interest or concern.” It also says descriptors are applied relative to the assigned category and “are not intended to be a complete listing of content.” Treat those statements as operating rules.

If the page lists no sexual descriptor, write “not listed by this rating source.” Do not rewrite that as “none,” “safe,” or “family-friendly.” If the summary does not say whether an event is optional, record optionality as unknown. If a regional page and a US page differ, keep both records and follow the authority governing your purchase. When your boundary is strict, an unresolved entry is a reason to postpone buying or choose a title with clearer documentation.

Common mistakes when searching for games without sex scenes

Using the age category as a shortcut

E10+ can still include minimal suggestive themes, and M17+ can include sexual content. Category labels are broad age signals. They cannot rank two games by the amount or prominence of sexual material.

Treating a missing descriptor as proof of absence

ESRB explicitly says descriptors are not a complete listing. A descriptor that is not shown means only that this rating source did not list it. Keep that wording in your notes and seek a fuller summary or regional record if the distinction matters.

Confusing “no sex scenes” with “no mature content”

Violence, strong language, drugs, gambling and disturbing themes are independent checks. Keep them in separate columns so a recommendation does not imply an overall family-friendly experience.

Ignoring optional content

A summary that mentions a brief optional encounter answers a different question from one that describes unavoidable main-story material. Record the route required to encounter it and whether skipping it changes progression, when the rating summary states that information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming open-world freedom means content can always be skipped

Exploration may be optional while a story sequence is not. Do not infer that every mature event can be avoided simply because a game has side quests or a large map. Require an explicit indication that the relevant content is optional.

Mixing platforms or regions

Do not carry a rating from one edition to another without checking. Confirm the exact release you will buy and the rating authority used where you live.

Turning a recommendation into a guarantee

Words such as “clean,” “no sex” and “safe” promise more than a descriptor page can usually prove. Prefer precise language: “sexual content is listed,” “nudity is described,” “sexual themes are listed,” or “this aspect is not listed by the checked authority.”

A practical buying checklist

Use this short checklist immediately before purchase or download:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Have you defined whether the issue is scenes, nudity, references or all three?
  • Did you identify the exact platform, edition and region?
  • Did you open the current rating record for the correct platform and region?
  • Did you read the summary instead of stopping at the age category?
  • Did you note whether the material is brief, repeated, optional or unavoidable?
  • Did you separate sexual content from violence, language and other mature themes?
  • Did you record an unlisted descriptor as “not listed by this rating source,” rather than “none”?
  • Are you using a documented contrast, such as Red Dead Redemption 2, instead of an unsupported reputation?
  • Have you saved the rating date so you can tell whether the listing is current?

If any answer is no, the game is not yet verified for your preference. Put it in a “needs checking” group rather than calling it suitable.

What the broader rating statistic does—and does not—tell you

ESRB reported that 65% of ratings assigned to physical and console downloadable games in 2024 were E or E10+. That is a broad market statistic, not a measurement of sexual content in open-world games. It cannot show that most open-world releases meet a low-sexual-content preference, and it should not be used as a substitute for checking individual summaries.

How to phrase a trustworthy recommendation

Until direct summaries have been checked, use qualified language. “Open-world candidate to verify” is accurate for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Skyrim based on the available evidence. “Verified low in sexual content” is not justified here. For a title with an explicit ESRB description of nudity and sexual content, say that it fails a no-nudity or no-sex-scenes requirement, or use it as a labeled comparison.

This wording protects readers from the most damaging error in content guidance: converting incomplete information into certainty. It also lets adults set their own threshold instead of assuming that one age label fits every concern.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there open-world games with absolutely no sexual content?

A rating page may omit sexual descriptors, but ESRB says descriptors are not a complete listing. Without a detailed current summary for the exact edition and region, the responsible wording is “not listed by this rating source,” not “contains none.”

Is an E10+ game automatically a good choice for someone avoiding sex scenes?

No. ESRB says E10+ can include minimal suggestive themes. Check the descriptors and full summary rather than treating E10+ as a guarantee.

Why is Red Dead Redemption 2 not recommended here?

Its ESRB entry lists Nudity and Sexual Content and describes nudity plus brief sexual content. It can serve as a comparison point, but it does not meet a strict no-nudity or no-sex-scenes requirement.

Does a missing Sexual Content descriptor mean there are no sex scenes?

No. ESRB explicitly says descriptors are not intended to be a complete listing. A missing descriptor means only that the checked rating source did not list it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I check the rating for my platform separately?

Yes. Match the platform, edition, country and date. A PC release, console release, remaster or regional version may have a different record or summary.

What is the difference between Sexual Content, Sexual Themes and Suggestive Themes?

ESRB uses Sexual Content for non-explicit depictions of sexual behavior, potentially including partial nudity; Sexual Themes for references to sex or sexuality; and Suggestive Themes for mild provocative references or materials.

Can optional side quests be ignored when I screen a game?

Only when the authoritative summary or other reliable documentation clearly establishes that the content is optional and avoidable. Do not infer that every encounter can be skipped simply because the game has an open map.

Are Tears of the Kingdom and Skyrim verified low-sexual-content picks?

Not on the evidence summarized here. GamesRadar’s 2026 roundup identifies them as open-world games, but direct current rating summaries still need to be checked before making a sexual-content claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

There is no verified ranking here, but there is a reliable method: define whether you are avoiding scenes, nudity, references or all three; check the current rating summary for the exact platform and region; record optionality and frequency only when stated; and treat missing descriptors as unknown. Tears of the Kingdom and Skyrim remain candidates to verify, while Red Dead Redemption 2 is a documented contrast because ESRB lists Nudity and Sexual Content.
