If you want one game to fill the gap before Grand Theft Auto VI, start with Red Dead Redemption 2 for Rockstar-style world detail, Cyberpunk 2077 for a modern city and RPG progression, or Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition for a focused crime drama with martial-arts combat. Watch Dogs 2, Saints Row and Mafia III are better matches for specific tastes rather than complete substitutes.
Rockstar’s currently published plan places GTA VI on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That is a changeable publisher target, so check Rockstar’s latest announcement before treating the date as final. None of the alternatives reproduces GTA’s exact combination of contemporary crime, driving, missions, satire and sandbox freedom; each replaces a different part of that formula.

What you are actually replacing while you wait
“A GTA-like game” can mean several different things. One player may want a dense city to explore, another may want a crime story, and a third may mainly want driving, vehicle theft and the freedom to create chaos. Treating those as one feature produces poor recommendations. The games below are complementary alternatives, not six versions of the same design.
Use the comparison table to identify the feature you miss most, then read that game’s section for its trade-offs. A historical western can provide more environmental immersion than a modern city, while a futuristic RPG can provide more character progression but less of GTA’s grounded crime tone.

Red Dead Redemption 2: best for world detail and immersion
Choose Red Dead Redemption 2 when what you miss most is the feeling that an open world exists independently of the main missions. It is the strongest overall substitute for Rockstar’s attention to environmental detail and player freedom, but it makes a fundamental change: the setting is a historical western rather than a contemporary city.
Why it works as a waiting game
The world is designed for observation and gradual discovery. Its story-led pace gives characters, travel and surroundings room to develop instead of pushing you from one explosive set piece to the next. That slower rhythm can be exactly what a player wants after finishing a fast, mission-heavy crime sandbox: there is time to explore, follow optional activities and absorb the environment.
Where it differs from GTA
There is no modern urban traffic system, contemporary criminal infrastructure or car-centered movement. The game’s historical setting changes the kinds of freedom available, and its deliberate pacing may feel too slow if your priority is instant access to vehicles and city crime. It is also a western adventure rather than a satire of modern life.
Pick it if…
- You value a richly detailed world more than a modern setting.
- You prefer a serious, story-led campaign.
- You want exploration and atmosphere to matter as much as mission variety.
Cyberpunk 2077: best for a modern city and RPG progression
Cyberpunk 2077 is the best choice when you want a large, contemporary-feeling city but are happy for that city to be futuristic. Night City supplies vehicles, crime activities and gigs, while role-playing systems make character development a central part of the experience.
Why it works as a waiting game
It preserves the appeal of moving through an urban environment, accepting jobs and deciding how to approach trouble. The city is a destination as well as a backdrop, and the gig structure gives you reasons to leave the main path. If your ideal GTA replacement includes a build you can shape over time, Cyberpunk 2077 offers substantially more role-playing emphasis than a traditional crime sandbox.
Where it differs from GTA
The futuristic setting changes the tone, social world and technology. Cyberpunk 2077 is not trying to recreate a contemporary crime satire; its systems are organized around a role-playing campaign, character abilities and branching activities. The result can feel more like an action RPG in an open city than a pure vehicle-and-sandbox game.

Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition: best for crime drama and martial arts
Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition is the most direct recommendation for readers who want an organized-crime story rather than a broad, endlessly distracted sandbox. Its open world supports a focused campaign, and martial-arts combat gives encounters a physical style that separates it from gun-centered alternatives.
Why it works as a waiting game
The game combines crime drama, driving and stunt action with hand-to-hand combat. Missions feel built around a cinematic criminal narrative, so it suits players who want momentum and character conflict without giving up the ability to roam between objectives. Martial arts also changes the moment-to-moment texture: confrontations are about positioning, timing and close-range action as well as weapons.
Where it differs from GTA
Its open world is more compact and campaign-focused. You should not expect the same breadth of activities or the same emphasis on a huge driving sandbox. The tone is crime-focused rather than primarily satirical, and the martial-arts identity means it is a poor fit if your favorite GTA moments are exclusively car chases and large-scale vehicle chaos.
Pick it if…
- You want organized-crime drama with a clear story arc.
- You prefer martial arts and stunt action to a purely shooting-based combat loop.
- You would rather have a concentrated campaign than the widest possible sandbox.
Watch Dogs 2: best for hacking in a contemporary city
Watch Dogs 2 is the right alternative when the part of GTA you miss is contemporary urban exploration, but you want missions that revolve around systems and infiltration. Hacking is its defining idea, allowing the player to manipulate the environment and approach objectives in less direct ways.
Why it works as a waiting game
The city-focused design makes ordinary urban spaces useful. Exploration, stealth and improvised solutions are connected, so a mission can become a puzzle about access and timing rather than a simple firefight. Vehicles help with traversal and set pieces, while hacking supplies the distinctive activity that gives the game its own identity.
Where it differs from GTA
The tone and systems are different. Watch Dogs 2 is lighter and more playful, and its core fantasy is digital control rather than traditional criminal power. If you want a tightly authored organized-crime story or a driving-first sandbox, it may feel indirect. Its strengths appear when you experiment with infiltration and environmental manipulation.
Pick it if…
- You want a recognizable modern city rather than a historical or futuristic one.
- You enjoy stealth, hacking and solving objectives through systems.
- You prefer playful experimentation to a purely serious crime narrative.
Saints Row: best for comic, exaggerated chaos
Saints Row is the choice for players who want the freedom of a crime sandbox without the expectation of realism. It keeps the open-world crime premise but pushes the tone toward comedy, exaggeration and spectacle.
Rank #2
- When federal agents threaten his family, former outlaw John Marston is forced to hunt down the gang of criminals he once called friends.
- Experience Marston’s journey across the sprawling expanses of the American West and Mexico as he fights to bury his blood-stained past in the critically acclaimed predecessor to the 2018 blockbuster, Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Also included is Undead Nightmare, the iconic horror story that transforms the world of Red Dead Redemption into an apocalyptic fight for survival against a zombie horde.
Why it works as a waiting game
It provides an outlet for unrestrained activity: driving, combat and criminal objectives are framed as opportunities for mayhem rather than grounded simulations. That makes it a useful change of pace if you have already played serious crime dramas and want something lighter while waiting for GTA VI.
Where it differs from GTA
The comic tone is not a cosmetic adjustment; it changes the entire experience. Characters, situations and action are designed to be irreverent, so players seeking a credible crime story may find it too broad. The sandbox is the attraction, but realism, subtle satire and measured drama are not its priorities.
Pick it if…
- You want exaggerated action and a deliberately unserious tone.
- You value free-form chaos more than a grounded criminal narrative.
- You are looking for a break from realistic or slow-paced open worlds.
Mafia III: best for grounded organized crime
Mafia III is aimed at a different need: a character-led organized-crime campaign in a more compact open world. It is a better fit for readers who want the atmosphere and progression of a crime story than for those looking for maximum sandbox breadth.
Why it works as a waiting game
The campaign keeps organized crime at the center. Driving, shooting and open-world objectives support the narrative rather than competing with it, which gives the game a slower, more deliberate feel. If you want to follow a protagonist’s campaign and watch a criminal operation develop, that focus can be more satisfying than an enormous checklist of unrelated diversions.
Where it differs from GTA
The world is more compact and the structure is more controlled. It does not aim for GTA’s mixture of satire, vehicle freedom and constant optional activity. The grounded tone and story emphasis also make it less suitable when your priority is playful experimentation.

Choose by the GTA feature you miss most
You miss a world that feels alive and worth wandering
Start with Red Dead Redemption 2. Its historical setting is the largest departure from GTA, but its detailed world and deliberate freedom make it the strongest immersion-first substitute.
You miss a modern city full of jobs and progression
Choose Cyberpunk 2077 if futuristic science fiction is acceptable. It combines an urban environment with gigs, crime activities, vehicles and RPG development.
You miss organized-crime drama
Pick Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition for a concentrated crime story with martial arts, or Mafia III for a slower, character-led campaign. Sleeping Dogs emphasizes cinematic action and close combat; Mafia III emphasizes grounded organized-crime storytelling.
You miss hacking and systemic infiltration
Watch Dogs 2 is the clearest match. Its identity comes from manipulating the environment and finding alternative routes through contemporary urban missions.

You miss ridiculous mayhem
Saints Row is the obvious fit. It preserves the crime-sandbox premise while replacing realism with comedy and exaggeration.
A practical play order while waiting
- Begin with Red Dead Redemption 2 if you want the most substantial immersion shift and have time for a slower campaign.
- Move to Cyberpunk 2077 when you want a modern-feeling city and a progression-heavy structure.
- Use Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition for a more compact crime story and a change to martial-arts combat.
- Switch to Watch Dogs 2 when you want hacking and experimentation rather than another conventional crime campaign.
- Play Saints Row when you want comic relief and exaggerated sandbox action.
- Finish with Mafia III if you want a focused, character-led organized-crime story.
This order is a way to alternate tone, setting and mission structure; it is not a ranking of quality. You can begin with the section that matches your strongest preference instead.
Buying and platform checks
Before purchasing any of these games, confirm the exact edition and platform in your region. The title “Definitive Edition” identifies a specific release of Sleeping Dogs, but store listings can still differ by console, PC storefront and included content. The same caution applies to Cyberpunk 2077, Watch Dogs 2, Saints Row and Mafia III, where availability and editions can change over time.
- Check whether the listing is for the platform you own.
- Confirm that the edition includes the content you expect, especially when multiple releases share a similar name.
- Review regional availability and language options before checkout.
- On PC, compare the current system requirements with your hardware rather than relying on an old listing.
- For a physical copy, verify stock, disc region and whether the package contains a complete edition or only the base game.
What no alternative can reproduce
GTA’s appeal comes from the interaction of several systems: a contemporary criminal setting, driving, missions, satire and the ability to ignore the intended path and create your own stories. The six recommendations divide those strengths among different designs. Red Dead Redemption 2 leads on immersion, Cyberpunk 2077 on urban RPG progression, Sleeping Dogs on crime drama and martial arts, Watch Dogs 2 on hacking, Saints Row on comic chaos, and Mafia III on grounded organized-crime storytelling.
