For most people, the best offline bird-call identifier is BirdNET running locally. Use the official BirdNET Python library for scripts and batch files, BirdNET-Pi for an always-on Raspberry Pi listening station, BirdNET-Go for a self-hosted web interface with several local models, and BirdBox when you need a research-grade event-detection and evaluation pipeline. Each can keep recordings on hardware you control when model files, audio, databases, and interfaces are installed locally and cloud integrations are disabled.

These projects are not interchangeable apps. They target different workflows, and none has a published apples-to-apples benchmark proving it is the most accurate, fastest, or most energy-efficient choice in every habitat. Your result will depend on model version, geography, microphone placement, overlapping calls, and background noise.

Which offline bird-call tool should you choose?

Tool Best fit How it runs locally Main trade-off
BirdNET Python library Developers, batch analysis, and research scripts Local model files support full offline use; scripts can return species scores, embeddings, location/time predictions, and custom-model output. You must create and maintain a Python environment, and the package is under active development.
BirdNET-Pi A dedicated backyard or 24/7 station Runs BirdNET on a Raspberry Pi, accepts a USB microphone or sound-card input, records and classifies locally, and provides a local web interface. You are responsible for Raspberry Pi setup, power, storage, microphone quality, updates, and troubleshooting.
BirdNET-Go A self-hosted web UI with multiple models and audio sources Provides 24/7 local AI inference, local recording and analysis, model-specific thresholds, and a browser interface on your network. There are more configuration choices, and model installation and resource use vary.
BirdBox Research event detection and evaluation Open-source inference and post-processing for bioacoustic event detection. It is a research pipeline, not a turnkey consumer application.

If you only need to identify a folder of recordings, start with the Python library. If you want a permanent station, choose BirdNET-Pi or BirdNET-Go. If your work involves labeled datasets, detector evaluation, or custom processing, BirdBox is the more appropriate foundation. Researchers building autonomous recorders should also examine acoupi, an open-source edge-deployment framework that integrates BirdNET.

What “offline” actually protects

Offline identification means the audio is analyzed on your computer or embedded device rather than uploaded to a vendor’s server. A genuinely local installation keeps the model files, recordings, classification database, and web interface on your own storage. It can operate without an internet connection after software, dependencies, and models have been installed.

Self-hosting does not automatically guarantee privacy. A station can still transmit data if you enable a wildlife-sharing service, push notifications, remote storage, telemetry, or another integration. For strict local processing:

  • Install model files on the machine that performs inference.
  • Store recordings and result databases on local disks or removable media you control.
  • Bind the web interface to your local network and protect it with strong credentials.
  • Disable optional result-sharing, notification, and remote-storage integrations.
  • Check firewall and router rules so the station cannot upload audio unintentionally.

You may still need internet access for the initial operating-system updates, package installation, model downloads, and later maintenance. “Works offline” describes inference after setup, not necessarily every installation step.

BirdNET Python library: the most flexible offline option

What it does

The official BirdNET Python library is designed for programmatic use. It can identify species by sound, return classification scores and embeddings, predict species presence for a location and time, and apply custom acoustic models. Its documentation explicitly supports full offline usage with local model files. The project documentation also states: “The source code for this project is licensed under the MIT License.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is the right choice when you need repeatable batch jobs, integration with a recorder, a data-science notebook, or a script that exports results to your own database. It is not the easiest route for someone who wants a ready-made dashboard.

Species coverage and model versions

BirdNET V2.4 documentation lists 6,522 supported species. BirdNET V3.0 preview documentation lists more than 11,000. Those are project-published coverage counts, not guarantees that every species will be recognized reliably in your location. Coverage and confidence change with model version, regional representation, recording quality, overlapping vocalizations, and noise.

The BirdNET V3.0 project repository describes TFLite/LiteRT, ProtoBuf, PyTorch, and ONNX backends. Backend support and Python-version compatibility can change as the project develops, so pin the versions used by a working script and test upgrades on a copy of your pipeline.

Typical offline workflow

  1. Prepare a machine. Use a desktop, laptop, server, or single-board computer with enough storage for your recordings and the selected model.
  2. Create an isolated Python environment. A virtual environment prevents BirdNET dependencies from conflicting with unrelated projects.
  3. Install the library and compatible runtime. Follow the current project documentation for the Python version and backend you intend to use.
  4. Download model files while online. Place them in a known local directory and record their version.
  5. Point your script at local files. Configure the analyzer to read local audio and local model paths rather than a remote service.
  6. Run a small validation set. Test known recordings before processing thousands of files. Save scores, model version, location, date, and recording settings with each result.
  7. Disconnect or restrict the network. Once dependencies and models are present, run the batch job with network access disabled if your privacy policy requires it.

For research, retain the original audio and the exact model and runtime versions. That makes a later re-analysis possible when a new model changes the predicted species list.

BirdNET-Pi: an always-on Raspberry Pi station

What it provides

BirdNET-Pi is built for continuous listening. Its project description says it recognizes bird songs, chirps, and peeps from a USB microphone or sound card in real time, records continuously, creates spectrograms, stores results, and provides a web interface. The project describes support for Raspberry Pi 5, 4B, 3B+, 0W2, and other models.

This deployment is practical for a garden, balcony, school grounds, or field site where you want a station that runs without leaving a desktop computer powered on. The Pi performs the classification locally; you browse its interface from another device on the same network.

Hardware checklist

  • Raspberry Pi computer. A documented build uses a Raspberry Pi 5 with 2 GB of memory.
  • Reliable microSD storage, with additional local storage if you retain long recordings or spectrograms.
  • USB microphone or a USB audio adapter connected to an external microphone.
  • Stable power supply and enclosure appropriate for the installation environment.
  • Network connection for installation and administration; inference can continue locally after setup.

Microphone placement matters as much as the computer. Put the microphone where it has a clear acoustic view, protect it from wind and rain, and keep it away from vibration and the Pi’s own fan noise. A poor signal cannot be repaired by changing software.

Privacy settings to check

BirdNET-Pi is a local-processing deployment, but optional integrations can transmit selected results. If strict privacy is the goal, do not enable BirdWeather or other remote destinations, and review any notification or remote-storage settings before leaving the station unattended. Keep the web interface restricted to your local network unless you have deliberately configured secure remote access.

BirdNET-Go: local web monitoring with multiple models

BirdNET-Go is a self-hosted soundscape analyzer for birds, bats, and other wildlife. Its documentation emphasizes 24/7 local AI inference, multiple audio sources, a web UI, per-model thresholds, and installable model choices. This makes it suitable when one station needs more flexibility than a single BirdNET deployment.

  • 2. 4 GHz and 5. 0 GHz IEEE 802. 11b/g/n/ac wireless LAN, Bluetooth 5. 0, BLE
  • 2 × USB 3. 0 ports, 2 x USB 2. 0 Ports
  • 2 × micro HDMI ports supproting up to 4Kp60 video resolution
  • Micro SD card slot for loading operating system and data storage

Available model choices

The current repository lists BirdNET v2.4, Google Perch v2, BattyBirdNET regional classifiers, and a BirdNET geomodel as installable choices. The available models target different organisms or geographic use cases, so select one that matches your recordings rather than assuming the newest or broadest list will perform best.

When to choose it over BirdNET-Pi

  • Choose BirdNET-Go when you want a browser-based dashboard with several audio sources or model-specific thresholds.
  • Choose BirdNET-Pi when you want a straightforward Raspberry Pi station centered on BirdNET recording and classification.
  • Choose BirdNET-Go for a home server or more configurable deployment; choose BirdNET-Pi for a focused, appliance-like station.

Both require you to manage local storage, updates, credentials, and hardware. Neither should be judged by a universal accuracy claim because no controlled comparison across these projects establishes a winner.

BirdBox and acoupi for research and edge engineering

BirdBox

BirdBox is aimed at deep-learning bird-call detection and evaluation. It combines inference and post-processing for bioacoustic events, making it useful when you need to measure detector behavior, process labeled recordings, or build a reproducible research pipeline. It is less suitable if your goal is simply to open an audio file and receive a friendly species name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

acoupi

acoupi is an open-source edge-deployment framework that integrates BirdNET. It is relevant to researchers building custom autonomous recorders, where power management, scheduling, sensor control, and on-device inference must work together. Expect engineering work rather than a polished consumer workflow.

Hardware, storage, and network planning

Every local deployment needs four things: compute capable of running the model, an acoustic input, local storage, and stable power. The exact CPU, memory, and disk requirements vary by model, sample rate, number of audio sources, and whether you retain continuous recordings.

Compute

A Raspberry Pi 5 with 2 GB of memory is a documented central-compute choice for a BirdNET-Go build, but it is not a universal performance guarantee. Desktop and server hardware provide more headroom for multiple simultaneous streams or heavier backends. Test the model and audio settings you actually intend to use.

Raspberry Pi 5 8GB
  • Raspberry Pi 5 with 8GB RAM: Model SC1112 featuring a quad-core ARM Cortex-A76 processor running at 2.4GHz. Enhanced Connectivity: Includes dual 4K micro HDMI ports, USB-C power input, and high-speed USB 3.0 ports. PCIe Expansion Support: FPC connector enables M.2 NVMe SSDs when using compatible adapters. Fast Storage Options: Works with microSD cards for booting, or optional NVMe storage for advanced projects. Built for Projects & Learning: Ideal for programming, home labs, DIY electronics, automation, and Linux-based development.

Audio input

BirdNET-Pi explicitly supports a USB microphone or sound-card input. A USB audio adapter is useful when you want to connect a higher-quality analog microphone. Use a stable input device, check the operating system’s selected sample rate, and monitor for clipping or a persistently low signal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Storage planning

Continuous recording can consume storage faster than classification results alone. Decide whether you need raw audio, short clips around detections, spectrogram images, or only timestamped predictions. Set retention limits and monitor free space; a full disk can stop recording even while the classifier appears healthy.

How to compare results without fooling yourself

The available project sources do not provide a controlled, apples-to-apples benchmark of accuracy, latency, CPU load, or energy use for BirdNET, BirdNET-Pi, BirdNET-Go, and BirdBox. Do not present one as the universal winner on those dimensions.

Instead, create a representative test set from your own habitat:

  1. Collect recordings from the seasons, times of day, microphones, and weather conditions you care about.
  2. Include quiet single-species calls, overlapping choruses, traffic or wind noise, and recordings with no bird present.
  3. Run the same files through each candidate with documented model versions and thresholds.
  4. Compare confirmed correct detections, false positives, missed calls, confidence distributions, processing time, and storage use.
  5. Repeat with regional or custom models where available.

Confidence is not proof of identity. Treat high scores as candidates for review, especially for rare species or noisy recordings. Keep the spectrogram and original clip so a human can inspect the evidence.

Common failure modes and fixes

The station uploads data

Review integrations, notification services, remote storage, and wildlife-sharing settings. Disable anything that sends results or audio externally, then verify outbound network activity at the router or firewall.

Best Value
Raspberry Pi 4 Model B (2GB)
  • Broadcom BCM2711, Quad core Cortex-A72 (ARM v8) 64-bit SoC @ 1.5GHz
  • 1GB, 2GB, 4GB or 8GB LPDDR4-3200 SDRAM (depending on model)
  • 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz IEEE 802.11ac wireless, Bluetooth 5.0, BLE Gigabit Ethernet
  • 2 USB 3.0 ports; 2 USB 2.0 ports.
  • Raspberry Pi standard 40 pin GPIO header (fully backwards compatible with previous boards)

No detections appear

Confirm that the operating system sees the microphone, the application is reading the intended input, and the signal is not muted or clipped. Check that model files are present locally and that the selected model supports the target region or species group.

Too many false positives

Lowering or raising a threshold changes the balance between missed calls and false alarms; there is no universally correct value. Test thresholds on your representative recordings, reduce wind and mechanical noise, and consider a regional classifier when one is available.

Storage fills unexpectedly

Measure how much continuous audio and spectrogram data the station creates each day. Shorten retention, keep event clips instead of full-day audio, move archives to a local larger disk, and add monitoring for free space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An update changes the results

Record model, backend, Python, and application versions with every run. Keep the previous environment available until the new version has passed your validation set.

A practical decision guide

  • One file or a folder: use the BirdNET Python library and write a small batch script.
  • Backyard listening station: use BirdNET-Pi with a Raspberry Pi, USB microphone or audio adapter, local storage, and stable power.
  • Several sources or models in a browser: use BirdNET-Go on a Raspberry Pi, home server, or other local machine.
  • Detector research or autonomous recorder engineering: use BirdBox, acoupi, or both, depending on whether your priority is evaluation or edge orchestration.

All four approaches can keep audio on equipment you control. The privacy outcome depends on your installation and enabled integrations, while identification quality depends on the model, habitat, and recording conditions. Start with the simplest deployment that matches your workflow, validate it on local recordings, and preserve model and configuration details so your results remain interpretable.
