For general image manipulation and retouching, start with GIMP. If your work centers on camera RAW files, compare darktable and RawTherapee; if you also draw or paint with a stylus, consider Krita. These projects overlap with Photoshop in some tasks, but they serve different purposes and should not be treated as interchangeable clones.

Choose by workflow rather than by a vague “closest Photoshop clone” score. If you need broad raster editing and RAW development, a practical combination is GIMP with darktable or RawTherapee: GIMP’s FAQ describes plug-ins for using both companions to process RAW images. That is a companion workflow, not a guarantee that every RAW file opens natively in every installation. GIMP FAQ
GIMP: the general-purpose starting point
GIMP is the most direct place to begin if you want an open-source application for general image manipulation, retouching, and compositing. The project’s FAQ says GIMP is free software under GPL version 3 or later and can be used commercially. It also acknowledges that people treat it as a Photoshop replacement, while clarifying that the project does not focus on competing with Photoshop. GIMP FAQ

For RAW photography, GIMP’s FAQ points to darktable and RawTherapee plug-ins. If your work depends on commercial print, color-critical output, or particular color profiles, verify support for your exact GIMP version, file, and output workflow in current official documentation. darktable: RAW development and photo-library workflow
darktable is designed as an open-source photography workflow application and RAW developer. It manages digital negatives in a database, provides a zoomable lighttable for browsing, and develops RAW images. Its project describes editing as non-destructive: adjustments are stored as processing instructions, and the full image is rendered during export. The feature page lists Linux, macOS, BSD, Windows, and Solaris support; RAW and standard formats including CR2, NEF, and JPEG; camera tethering for some brands; and export formats including JPEG, PNG, TIFF, PPM, PFM, and EXR. It describes XMP sidecars and a database as ways to save metadata and processing settings. Choose darktable when organizing and developing photographs are central to your workflow. It is not presented by its project as a universal layer-based Photoshop substitute.

RawTherapee: focused RAW processing
RawTherapee is a free, cross-platform RAW photo-processing program released under GPLv3. Its official page lists version 5.13, released July 26, 2026, with downloads for Linux, Windows, and macOS. The project describes a non-destructive 32-bit floating-point processing engine, demosaicing, and correction tools for RAW workflows. RawTherapee
It is a strong candidate when your main task is developing RAW captures. The available official information does not establish it as a replacement for every general raster-editing task. If you need broader image manipulation as well, consider pairing it with GIMP; GIMP’s FAQ identifies RawTherapee plug-ins as one route for RAW processing. GIMP FAQ

Krita: a fit for drawing and stylus work
Krita is best considered when painting, drawing, or stylus input is part of the job, rather than as a dedicated photo editor based on its download page alone. The official page lists version 5.3.4.1, released October 7, 2026, with downloads for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It says a graphics tablet compatible with the operating system can be used and identifies Krita as free and open source under GNU GPL v3. Download Krita
A tablet is optional, and compatibility depends on both the device and operating system. Check Krita’s current system requirements and documentation for your setup before relying on tablet-specific features.

What to check before switching from Photoshop
Test the workflows and files that matter to you before moving a working project or changing your main editor. The official sources cited here do not establish a current, detailed PSD compatibility matrix, so general format support should not be read as a promise that a complex Photoshop project will transfer intact.
- PSD files: Open copies of your real projects and inspect the layers, effects, masks, and other features you depend on.
- RAW camera support: Confirm that your exact camera files are supported by the application version you plan to use.
- Color and print: Verify the required profiles, soft-proofing, and output steps for your printer or commercial print workflow.
- Operating system and devices: Check current installers and system requirements; for tethering or tablet use, verify the exact camera or tablet and OS combination.
- Export and handoff: Confirm that the formats and settings required by clients, collaborators, or downstream software are available.
For current availability, the RawTherapee page lists version 5.13 (July 26, 2026), and Krita’s download page lists version 5.3.4.1 (October 7, 2026). The cited GIMP FAQ does not establish a current stable release number. RawTherapee Krita downloads GIMP FAQ
