There is no single open-source, drop-in replacement for every Microsoft Phone Link feature. For most Windows-and-Android users, start with KDE Connect because it combines clipboard and file sharing, notifications, phone-finding and remote-control functions. Choose LocalSend when nearby file or text transfer is the priority, scrcpy when you need to view and control the Android screen, and evaluate Sefirah if you want broader Windows integration and can accept documented compatibility caveats.
What you are replacing
Microsoft Phone Link connects a Windows PC to select Android phones. Depending on the phone model, Android version and enabled features, Microsoft documents access to messages, recent photos, supported Android apps, calls and notifications. Its baseline requirements are Android 10 or later, Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later, or Windows 11. Microsoft also requires both devices to be connected to the same Wi‑Fi network.
Those requirements and features are not universal across every Android handset. A phone may support notifications but not app streaming, or calls but not another feature. Treat Phone Link as a bundle of separate capabilities rather than a single standard that every alternative must reproduce.

The practical replacement question is therefore, “Which task do I need to move to Windows?” Someone who only sends photos has a very different requirement from someone who wants SMS, calls and Android storage in File Explorer. Choosing by task prevents disappointment when an app is excellent at one job but does not attempt the others.

Quick comparison
| Project | Best for | Documented capabilities relevant to Windows and Android | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| KDE Connect | Broad everyday cross-device use | Clipboard and file sharing, computer notifications, phone finding and phone-as-remote-control features; Windows and Android versions are listed. | The project pages do not establish feature-for-feature parity with Phone Link, and individual functions depend on platform permissions and support. |
| LocalSend | Nearby file and text transfer | Shares files and messages over a local network, without internet access or third-party servers; Windows and Android are supported; transfers use HTTPS. | Its documented scope does not include Phone Link-style calls, SMS, notification mirroring or Android-app integration. |
| scrcpy | Android screen viewing and control | Displays and controls an Android device from Windows, Linux or macOS. | It is a focused display/control utility, not a general messages, calls, photos and notifications suite. Android API 21 or later is required. |
| Sefirah | Trying a wider Windows-and-Android integration | Lists clipboard sharing, notifications, media controls, file sharing, Android storage in Windows Explorer, screen mirroring, SMS and phone-call functions. | Its documentation says sensitive notifications are no longer visible from Android 15 onward. Some transfer functions are experimental or may depend on the Windows version. |
How to choose an alternative
Start with the action you perform most often, not the word “alternative.” A focused utility can be a better solution than an unstable all-in-one replacement.
- Notifications and cross-device convenience: try KDE Connect first, then verify that Android notification access is available for your phone.
- Moving photos, documents or snippets of text: use LocalSend. It is intentionally limited to nearby transfers, which keeps its setup and network model straightforward.
- Using the phone from a PC window: use scrcpy. It is the clearest match for screen display and control, not for communications management.
- Explorer storage, SMS, calls and mirroring in one project: assess Sefirah, but check its current release notes, Windows build and Android-version behavior before relying on it.
Then check four practical variables: whether both operating systems support the specific feature, whether the devices are on the required network, which permissions the phone requests, and how much setup complexity you are willing to maintain. A project listing Windows and Android proves platform availability, not identical feature support on both sides.
It is also reasonable to install more than one project. KDE Connect can handle notifications and clipboard actions while LocalSend handles an occasional folder of photos, and scrcpy can be opened only when interactive screen control is needed. This modular approach avoids giving a single application permissions that its documented scope does not require.
KDE Connect: the best general-purpose starting point
KDE Connect is the broadest documented everyday option in this group. The KDE Connect project describes sharing a clipboard, accessing files across devices, turning a phone into a computer remote control, finding a misplaced phone and seeing phone notifications on a computer. Its project and download pages list Windows and Android among the supported platforms and provide source code for desktop and mobile versions.
The project summarizes its purpose this way: “KDE Connect makes your phone and computer work better together: share your clipboard and access files across devices, turn your phone into a remote control for your computer, find your phone when it has slipped down the back of your couch, see your phone notifications from your computer, and much more!” That is a useful description of its breadth, but it is not a promise of Phone Link feature parity.
This makes KDE Connect the sensible first installation when your goal is a set of small, frequent conveniences rather than one specialized task. It can reduce the need to pick up the phone for a copied verification code, a quick file handoff, a notification check or a simple remote-control action.
What KDE Connect does not prove
KDE’s feature descriptions do not establish that every Phone Link function is available in every Windows-and-Android combination. They do not promise the same supported-app catalog, call handling or message workflow documented for a particular Phone Link device. Use KDE Connect for the functions it documents, and keep expectations feature-specific.

Practical setup sequence
- Install the Windows desktop application and the Android application from the KDE Connect project’s current distribution channels.
- Put the PC and phone on the same local network, then open KDE Connect on both devices.
- Use the device list to select the other device and send a pairing request. Approve the request on the other screen.
- Open the paired-device settings and enable only the plugins you need, such as clipboard, file access, notification access or remote-control actions.
- When Android asks for notification or accessibility-related permission, review the scope and grant it only if that feature is required.
- Test one function at a time: copy a short text string, send a harmless test file, trigger a notification and try the remote-control action. This identifies a permission problem before you depend on the connection.
If discovery fails, confirm that both devices are on the same Wi‑Fi network and that a guest network or firewall is not isolating them. Pairing and individual plugins are separate failure points; a successful pairing does not automatically grant notification or file permissions.

Who should choose it
Choose KDE Connect when you want several modest conveniences in one open-source project and are comfortable enabling Android permissions one feature at a time. It is less suitable if your non-negotiable requirement is a complete SMS-and-calls dashboard or guaranteed Android-app streaming, because the project pages do not claim those Phone Link categories as a universal equivalent.
LocalSend: the focused choice for local transfers
LocalSend is designed for sharing files and messages with nearby devices over a local network. Its project documentation says it works without an internet connection or third-party servers, supports Windows and Android, and sends data over HTTPS. That combination is useful when you want a direct handoff between your own devices without uploading a file to an online service first.
When LocalSend is a better fit than Phone Link
- You need to move a large photo set, document or short text between nearby devices.
- You want a simple sender-and-receiver workflow instead of notification, SMS or calling integration.
- You prefer a local-network transfer model that does not require internet connectivity or a third-party relay.
- You need to send something to another nearby supported device without setting up a broader phone-integration suite.
Transfer workflow
- Install LocalSend on the Windows PC and Android phone.
- Connect both devices to the same local network. LocalSend’s documented model is local; an internet connection is not required.
- Open the app on both devices and keep the receiving device available for discovery.
- On the sending device, choose the discovered recipient, select the files or message and send.
- Accept the transfer on the receiving device and verify the destination folder or app location.
LocalSend should not be presented as a replacement for Phone Link notifications, calls, SMS or Android-app access. Pair it with another utility when transfers are only one part of your workflow. Its narrow scope is an advantage for readers who do not want an always-on integration layer.
Because discovery and transfer happen on the local network, check whether a guest network separates wireless clients. Also verify the recipient name before accepting a transfer on a shared network. HTTPS protects the transfer channel described by the project, but users still control which nearby device receives the file.
scrcpy: the specialist tool for Android screen control
scrcpy displays and controls an Android device from a Windows, Linux or macOS computer. The official project lists Android API 21 or later as the minimum requirement. It is the strongest match here for interacting with the phone screen from a PC: reading an app, entering text with a computer keyboard or controlling a task without holding the handset.
What scrcpy is—and is not
scrcpy is a screen display and control utility. Its documented purpose does not make it a complete communications hub with Phone Link’s messages, calls, notifications, recent photos and supported-app categories. If you need both screen control and background notification or file conveniences, combine scrcpy with KDE Connect or LocalSend instead of expecting one program to cover every job.
Safe setup approach
- Download scrcpy from the official project repository and follow its current Windows installation and connection instructions. Release packaging and connection steps can change, so use the instructions for the version you install.
- Confirm that the Android phone meets the API 21-or-later requirement.
- Enable the Android connection method requested by the project, then connect the phone according to the repository’s instructions.
- Approve any authorization prompt shown on the phone and keep the device unlocked while establishing the first connection.
- Start scrcpy and verify that the phone display appears in its window. Test touch, keyboard and clipboard behavior before using it for an important task.
If the display does not appear, check the phone’s authorization prompt, the USB or network connection method selected, and whether the installed scrcpy release matches the instructions you followed. Do not assume that a working display grants access to notifications, calls or SMS; those are separate capabilities.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When scrcpy is the right answer
Pick scrcpy when the phrase “use my Android from Windows” means seeing and controlling the actual handset screen. It is not the right answer if the goal is merely to move a photo or receive a notification without opening a mirrored display. In that case, LocalSend or KDE Connect has a closer documented scope.

Sefirah: the broadest listed feature set, with real caveats
Sefirah’s repository lists a feature set that is closer in shape to a Phone Link-style integration: clipboard sharing, notifications, media controls, file sharing, Android storage integration in Windows Explorer, screen mirroring, SMS and phone-call functions.
That breadth is why it deserves evaluation when KDE Connect, LocalSend and scrcpy do not cover your workflow. It is not a reason to call Sefirah a proven drop-in replacement. The same project documentation says sensitive notifications are no longer visible from Android 15 onward. It also describes some file-transfer functionality as experimental or potentially dependent on the Windows version.
Questions to answer before depending on Sefirah
- Which Sefirah release is current, and does it support your exact Windows build?
- Is your phone running Android 15 or later, where sensitive-notification visibility is documented as restricted?
- Are the Explorer integration and transfer functions marked stable for your setup, or experimental?
- Does your device expose the permissions required for calls, SMS, notifications and mirroring?
- Can you test each requested function independently rather than assuming that pairing enables the complete list?
Install it first on a non-critical workflow. Test each requested function separately, record which permissions were needed, and keep another transfer or mirroring tool available until the behavior is reliable on your phone. A project with more listed features also has more places where an Android update, Windows build or permission policy can change the result.

Feature-by-feature decision guide
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Why | Do not assume… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clipboard, notifications and small remote actions | KDE Connect | These functions are explicitly described by the project alongside file access and phone finding. | That every Phone Link message, call or supported app will appear. |
| Sending files or text nearby | LocalSend | It is purpose-built for local transfers, uses HTTPS and does not require internet or third-party servers. | That it mirrors notifications or manages communications. |
| Viewing and controlling the Android display | scrcpy | Its documented purpose is Android display and control on Windows, Linux and macOS. | That screen control includes SMS, calls or background notification syncing. |
| A single project listing Explorer storage, SMS, calls and mirroring | Sefirah, cautiously | Its repository lists that wider combination. | That all listed functions are stable on every Windows and Android version. |
Use the “do not assume” column as a compatibility test. Before uninstalling Phone Link, write down the exact actions you use weekly and test each one. A replacement that handles four less-important features but misses the one feature you rely on is not a practical replacement.
Combining tools instead of forcing one replacement
Open-source utilities can complement one another cleanly because their scopes differ:
| Daily need | Primary tool | Optional companion |
|---|---|---|
| Notifications, clipboard and occasional remote actions | KDE Connect | LocalSend for larger one-off transfers |
| Photos, documents and text snippets on the same network | LocalSend | KDE Connect for notification visibility |
| Interactive Android screen from Windows | scrcpy | KDE Connect for clipboard and notifications |
| Calls, SMS, Explorer storage and mirroring | Evaluate Sefirah | Keep KDE Connect, LocalSend or scrcpy for functions that prove more dependable |
This modular approach also limits permissions. Give a transfer app access to transfers, a mirroring utility access to display control and a notification tool access to notifications, rather than granting every capability to an untested all-in-one project.
There is no accessory that the documentation identifies as central across all four projects. Treat cables, adapters and other hardware as connection-specific questions for the individual project, not as a reason to buy a generic Phone Link replacement kit. The decision here is primarily about software scope, operating-system support and permissions.

- Windows edition: check whether the project supports your current Windows release. Phone Link’s documented baseline is Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later, or Windows 11; alternatives may publish different requirements.
- Android version: verify the minimum version for the exact feature. scrcpy lists Android API 21 or later, while Sefirah documents a sensitive-notification limitation beginning with Android 15.
- Network: Phone Link requires the same Wi‑Fi network in Microsoft’s baseline. LocalSend explicitly uses a local network and does not need internet or third-party servers. Other projects may use additional connection methods; follow their current documentation.
- Permissions: notification access, accessibility control, file access and call or SMS permissions are independent. Grant only what the feature requires.
- Lock-screen behavior: test whether notifications or transfers behave differently when the phone is locked, in battery-saver mode or on a restricted network.
- Data exposure: review where files are stored, which devices are discoverable and whether a shared network includes people you do not trust.
- Feature proof: a Windows-and-Android listing establishes that versions exist for those platforms, not that every feature works identically on both.
Keep a note of the Android version, Windows build and app release used during testing. If a later update changes notification behavior or discovery, those details make it easier to identify whether the problem is a changed requirement rather than a failed pairing.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely checks |
|---|---|
| Devices cannot see each other | Confirm both are on the same local network, disable guest-network isolation, check Windows firewall prompts and reopen the apps. |
| Pairing works but notifications do not | Enable Android notification access for the chosen app, check per-app notification settings and test with a new notification. |
| Files transfer in one direction only | Check receiving-device approval, storage permission and the destination folder; sender and receiver permissions are separate. |
| Screen mirroring fails | For scrcpy, verify the Android API requirement, authorization prompt and the connection method required by the installed release. |
| Sensitive notifications are missing on Android 15 | This is a documented Sefirah limitation, not necessarily a pairing failure. Use a different notification workflow if those alerts are essential. |
| Explorer or transfer features behave unpredictably | Sefirah documents some functionality as experimental or Windows-version dependent; check its current compatibility notes before treating the behavior as a configuration error. |
| One function works while another fails | Check the permission and plugin for that individual function. Pairing alone does not prove that notifications, files, calls or mirroring are enabled. |
Frequently asked questions
What is the best open-source Phone Link alternative overall?
KDE Connect is the strongest general starting point because its documented feature mix includes clipboard and file sharing, computer notifications, phone finding and remote-control functions on Windows and Android. It is not feature-identical to Phone Link, so verify the particular message, call or app workflow you need.
Can LocalSend replace Phone Link?
Only for a narrow transfer use case. LocalSend sends files and messages over a local network, without internet or third-party servers, and uses HTTPS. Its documented scope does not include calls, SMS, notification mirroring or Android-app integration.
Which option mirrors and controls an Android phone?
scrcpy is the focused choice. It displays and controls Android on Windows, Linux and macOS and lists Android API 21 or later as its minimum. It should be paired with another utility if you also need notifications or general file exchange.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDoes any option exactly reproduce Phone Link?
No project in this comparison is established as a complete, feature-for-feature replacement across every Phone Link workflow. Sefirah lists the broadest combination of integration features, but its documentation includes Android 15 notification restrictions and experimental or Windows-dependent transfer behavior.
What Android version does scrcpy require?
The official scrcpy repository lists Android API 21 or later. Follow the repository’s current Windows installation and connection instructions because release packaging and connection steps can change.
Will Sefirah show sensitive notifications on Android 15?
Sefirah’s documentation says sensitive notifications are no longer visible from Android 15 onward. Treat that as a documented limitation, test your own phone and use another notification workflow if those alerts are essential.
Do these alternatives need the internet?
LocalSend explicitly says it works over a local network without internet access or third-party servers. Phone Link’s documented baseline requires both devices on the same Wi‑Fi network. KDE Connect and scrcpy can use connection methods described in their current project instructions, so check those instructions for your setup.
Should I install all four?
Not necessarily. Install according to your workflow: KDE Connect for broad everyday conveniences, LocalSend for transfers, scrcpy for screen control, and Sefirah only if its wider feature list is worth testing against its compatibility caveats. Combining two focused tools is often more dependable than relying on one untested all-in-one project.

Bottom line
Choose KDE Connect as the broadest open-source starting point for ordinary Windows-and-Android conveniences. Choose LocalSend for private nearby transfers, and scrcpy for direct Android screen control. Consider Sefirah only after checking its current release, Windows build and Android behavior, especially the Android 15 sensitive-notification restriction. None of these projects should be described as a complete, feature-identical replacement for every Phone Link workflow; the right choice depends on the specific functions you need.
