There is no single best open-source desktop agent for every workflow. The practical choice depends on the boundary of the task: Interpreter/Interpreter Workstation is the closest fit for work that crosses desktop apps, files, browser tabs and documents; open-browser-use is purpose-built for automating an existing signed-in Chrome or Chromium session; open-computer-use adds native desktop controls to an MCP-capable agent; OpenHands is mainly a developer-agent platform; and E2B Open Computer Use runs an isolated Linux computer in the cloud.

These projects are not interchangeable consumer assistants, and the reviewed documentation describes capabilities rather than comparable hands-on success rates. Choose by task scope, where execution occurs, operating-system support, model and API requirements, permissions, and how you will review consequential actions.

What are the best open-source AI desktop agents?

The shortlist below covers five different approaches to computer use. Calling them all “desktop agents” can hide important differences:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Cross-application agent: operates files, documents, spreadsheets, browser tabs and desktop applications in one workflow.
  • Browser agent: controls a real browser session, often reusing your existing login and cookies.
  • Desktop-control layer: exposes clicks, typing, scrolling and accessibility state to another agent through MCP.
  • Developer-agent platform: provides infrastructure for coding and scheduled engineering work rather than a general personal assistant.
  • Cloud computer sandbox: supplies a disposable remote Linux desktop controlled through keyboard, mouse and shell actions.

Open source does not automatically mean free, fully local or safe to run with unrestricted access. A project may still need a paid model provider, an API key, a remote machine, a browser extension or operating-system permissions. Treat every capability as a documented project claim, not a guarantee that an arbitrary task will complete correctly.

Interpreter / Interpreter Workstation Desktop apps, files, browser, documents and spreadsheets Can use supported cloud providers or local models; can target a local computer or a remote computer through a browser bridge Workstation deployment; exact support depends on the selected setup Natural-language tasks, voice, MCP integrations and review before submit, send, delete or overwrite actions Cross-app knowledge work
open-browser-use Existing Chrome or Chromium session Local browser control Repository describes a macOS and Linux preview Uses a real signed-in session; MIT-licensed; examples include invoices, dashboards, forms and repeat orders Browser-only automation that needs your current login
open-computer-use Native application controls exposed through MCP Local MCP server connected to another agent macOS, Windows and Linux, with feature differences App listing and state, clicking, scrolling, dragging, typing, keypresses and control values through accessibility interfaces Adding native desktop control to an existing MCP-capable agent
OpenHands Software development and agent infrastructure Self-hosted Agent Server or hosted service; Automation Server can schedule or trigger work Laptop, dedicated machine, cloud VM or hosted environment Developer workflows, recurring jobs and configurable deployment Technical users building or operating coding agents
E2B Open Computer Use Isolated Linux computer Cloud sandbox with streamed display Remote Linux environment Keyboard, mouse and shell actions; user can pause and prompt the agent Disposable remote execution rather than direct control of a personal computer

No source in the reviewed material establishes a universal reliability winner, a common price comparison or a head-to-head benchmark for these projects.

Interpreter: the broadest match for everyday cross-app work

Interpreter’s desktop documentation describes workflows that move between browser tabs, files, spreadsheets, PDFs, documents and desktop applications. Examples include reading and editing files, operating apps through clicks and menus, working in portals and dashboards, extracting document data into structured formats, issuing voice instructions and connecting MCP tools.

Why it stands out

Among the projects listed here, this is the most direct match for a request such as “take the figures from these PDFs, update the spreadsheet, check the web dashboard and prepare a document.” Its documented review behavior is also unusually explicit: it pauses for human review before actions that submit, send, delete or overwrite. That is a control to use, not proof that every other action is safe or that every workflow succeeds.

Interpreter Workstation deployment choices

The Interpreter Workstation repository describes an account-optional, self-hostable workspace. It can use supported cloud providers or local models, operate against the local computer or a remote computer through its browser bridge, and restrict which files and applications an agent may access. Those choices affect privacy, latency, cost and the blast radius of a mistake.

The documented source-build prerequisites are Node.js 22, pnpm 9, Bun, Rust stable with Cargo, and Git with submodule support. That indicates a meaningful technical setup for a source build; it does not establish that every casual user must compile the project themselves. Check the current installation path and release instructions before choosing a build method.

Use it when

  • A task crosses native applications and the web.
  • The agent needs to transform documents or move information between files.
  • You want a documented confirmation point before irreversible actions.
  • You can define narrow file and application permissions and supply an appropriate model.

open-browser-use: automate an existing signed-in browser

open-browser-use targets a narrower but important problem: controlling your real Chrome or Chromium session rather than creating a separate anonymous browser. Its README describes local execution, MCP integration and an MIT license. The listed examples include downloading invoices, extracting information from a dashboard, filling a form using a PDF and repeating a grocery order.

Why an existing session matters

Reusing the browser you already sign in to can avoid a second authentication flow and preserve the cookies, profiles and site state that a task requires. It also means the agent may inherit access to every tab and account available in that profile. Use a dedicated browser profile with only the accounts and extensions needed for the job.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Platform and installation caveat

The repository describes its accessed state as a macOS and Linux preview and says the extension must be loaded manually from a GitHub release. Preview labels, release packaging and browser compatibility can change, so verify the current release instructions before installing. Nothing in the project description makes it a general native-desktop controller; if the workflow must edit a local graphics program or interact with a non-browser window, choose a broader agent or add a desktop-control layer.

Use it when

  • The whole workflow stays inside Chrome or Chromium.
  • You specifically need an already signed-in browser session.
  • You prefer local browser control and can accept preview-stage limitations.

open-computer-use: native desktop control through MCP

open-computer-use is a local MCP server, not a complete end-user assistant. It exposes operations such as listing applications and state, clicking, scrolling, dragging, typing, sending keypresses and setting control values through accessibility interfaces. An MCP-capable agent supplies the planning and language-model layer.

Operating-system requirements

  • macOS: version 14 or later requires Accessibility and Screen Recording permissions.
  • Linux: requires AT-SPI2 and a signed-in desktop session.
  • Windows: the project documents some newer window-level tools as Windows-only.

macOS and Linux support for those newer window-level tools is described as in progress, so do not assume feature parity across systems. Grant only the permissions required for the specific workflow, and remove them when you stop using the integration.

How it fits into an agent stack

  1. Install the MCP server and confirm that your operating system exposes the required accessibility APIs.
  2. Connect the server in an MCP-capable agent using that agent’s tool configuration.
  3. Start with a harmless application, such as a text editor, and test listing, clicking, typing and reading state.
  4. Add one application at a time and keep the agent’s allowed tools narrow.
  5. Insert a human confirmation before sending messages, purchasing, deleting files or changing account settings.

This is the appropriate choice when you already have an agent that can call MCP tools and need native controls. It is not a turnkey replacement for that agent.

OpenHands: infrastructure for developer agents

OpenHands is presented in the reviewed sources primarily as an AI development platform, not as a ready-made consumer assistant for arbitrary daily desktop tasks. Its Agent Server can run on a laptop, a dedicated machine such as a Mac mini, a cloud virtual machine or OpenHands Cloud. Its Automation Server can schedule work or trigger it from events.

When it makes sense

Choose OpenHands when your objective is to host, configure or automate engineering agents: for example, recurring repository maintenance, issue-driven work or jobs triggered by a development event. A dedicated Mac mini is an optional hosting path, not a requirement; the documented alternatives include a laptop, a cloud VM and a hosted option.

Why it is not the default everyday-desktop pick

The sources do not establish that OpenHands provides the same broad local file-and-application assistant experience described for Interpreter. Using it for personal desktop chores may require additional configuration, permissions and integration work. Treat it as an infrastructure decision for technical users rather than assuming it is a plug-and-play household assistant.

E2B Open Computer Use: a remote Linux sandbox

E2B Open Computer Use describes a cloud Linux computer controlled with keyboard, mouse and shell actions. It provides a live display stream and lets a user pause and prompt the agent. This isolation is materially different from granting an agent control of your everyday laptop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10 or later.
  • An E2B API key.
  • An API key for the model provider you select.

The model and the computer both operate in a remote environment, so review where documents, credentials and screenshots travel before using real data. A cloud sandbox can be useful for disposable experiments or tasks that do not need local files, but it is not “local” merely because the controlling project is open source.

Use it when

  • You want an isolated Linux desktop that can be reset or discarded.
  • You need a streamed visual environment and the ability to pause the agent.
  • You are comfortable managing cloud credentials and remote-data exposure.

How to evaluate any computer-use agent before trusting it

1. Define the task boundary

Write down every surface the workflow touches: browser, native applications, local folders, removable drives, cloud documents, developer tools and authentication prompts. A browser-only task should not receive unrestricted desktop access; a cross-application task may fail if you choose a browser-only tool.

2. Decide where execution belongs

Local execution keeps actions near your machine but may require powerful hardware and broad operating-system permissions. A remote computer or cloud VM separates the agent from your daily desktop but changes where files, credentials and screen images reside. Record the exact deployment rather than using “open source” as a synonym for local.

3. Inventory model and runtime requirements

Confirm whether the project accepts a local model, requires a cloud provider, needs a separate MCP-capable agent, or expects API keys. Inference and hosting can cost money even when the software license is open source. Also check runtime versions, browser extensions, signed-in sessions and operating-system permissions.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Start with reversible tasks

Use a test folder and non-production account. Ask the agent to list files, read a document or draft a form without submitting it. Compare the observed result with your intended result before allowing writes, uploads or account changes.

5. Add explicit approval gates

Require confirmation immediately before purchases, messages, submissions, deletion, overwrites, permission changes and account recovery actions. Interpreter documents review pauses for submit, send, delete and overwrite operations; for the other projects, implement equivalent checkpoints in the surrounding agent or workflow rather than assuming they exist.

6. Measure the actual workflow

Run the same small task repeatedly with fixed inputs. Record completion, wrong clicks, missed fields, timeouts, recovery behavior and the number of human interventions. Do not convert a single successful demonstration into a reliability ranking.

Privacy, security and permission checklist

  • Create a separate browser profile for browser agents; do not expose every personal account in your everyday profile.
  • Use a dedicated test directory and deny access to unrelated folders.
  • Prefer read-only credentials for information-gathering tasks.
  • Keep purchase, messaging, deletion and account-security actions behind a human checkpoint.
  • Review screenshots, logs, model-provider retention and cloud-sandbox data handling before sending confidential material.
  • On macOS, grant Accessibility and Screen Recording only to the components that need them.
  • On Linux, verify that AT-SPI2 is available in the signed-in desktop session.
  • Rotate API keys and revoke browser sessions when testing ends.
  • Keep an audit record of prompts, tool calls and final actions for business workflows.

Reliability: what the available evidence does and does not show

The 2026 OpenComputer paper reports a framework spanning 33 desktop applications and 1,000 finalized tasks. It also reports that frontier agents can struggle with end-to-end completion even after making partial progress, and that open-source models can show sharp drops from OSWorld-Verified scores. Those are category-level observations, not scores for Interpreter, open-browser-use, open-computer-use, OpenHands or E2B Open Computer Use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The project pages reviewed for this guide describe features and setup, not a reproducible head-to-head evaluation. There is therefore no evidence-backed basis for calling one shortlisted project “most reliable.” If reliability matters, test your own workflows and report the task definition, model, operating system, permissions and intervention policy.

Common failure modes and fixes

The agent can see a page but cannot complete the task

Break the workflow into shorter stages, provide a clear target state and require a screenshot or extracted value after each stage. Browser agents may also fail when a site changes its layout or uses an authentication step they cannot safely automate.

A native application is invisible

Check that the selected tool actually supports native applications. open-browser-use is limited to the browser boundary. For native control, verify Accessibility permissions on macOS, AT-SPI2 and a signed-in desktop on Linux, or the documented Windows support for the specific tool.

A browser task loses the login

Confirm that the agent is attached to the intended Chrome or Chromium profile and that the extension is loaded. Use a dedicated profile rather than copying personal cookies into an untrusted environment.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The setup works locally but the model is unavailable

Separate the control layer from inference in your diagnosis. Confirm the model-provider key, endpoint, quota and selected model. Open-source control software does not guarantee free inference or a bundled local model.

The agent performs an unsafe action

Stop the run, revoke active sessions if necessary, inspect logs and narrow the tool permissions. Re-enable the workflow only after adding a confirmation gate immediately before the risky operation.

Can an AI agent use my computer and existing browser login?

Yes, open-browser-use is specifically described as controlling a real signed-in Chrome or Chromium session, while Interpreter describes broader local-computer workflows. The trade-off is access: a signed-in profile can expose whatever that profile can reach. Use a restricted profile, test account and explicit approval before allowing submissions or purchases.

Can I run a computer-use agent locally with my own model?

Interpreter Workstation is described as supporting supported cloud providers or local models, and open-computer-use is described as a local MCP server. Whether the complete workflow is local depends on the model, agent, browser or remote-computer configuration you select. E2B Open Computer Use is a cloud sandbox and therefore follows a different deployment and privacy model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between browser automation and desktop control?

Browser automation operates within a browser session and can reuse browser state. Desktop control operates native windows and controls through operating-system accessibility interfaces. A browser agent is simpler and narrower; a desktop-control layer can reach more applications but requires broader permissions and has more platform-specific failure modes.
