The Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 OLED is the best overall choice for accurate dark scenes. Its 14-inch 1920×1200 panel is specified at 100% DCI-P3 and 400 nits, and independent testing measured 355.6 nits, 84.1% DCI-P3 coverage and 13 hours 19 minutes of battery life. Tom’s Guide found its color accuracy and “deep, inky blacks” excellent for both work and streaming. Choose the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus instead if a larger 15.6-inch screen matters more than documented color performance.
Quick verdict
| Chromebook | Best for | Display evidence | Battery evidence | Price evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 OLED | Accurate color, dark movies, portability and stronger documented specifications | 14-inch 1920×1200 OLED; 100% DCI-P3 and 400-nit claim; 355.6-nit average and 84.1% DCI-P3 in Tom’s Guide testing | Up to 17 hours claimed by Lenovo; 13:19 in Tom’s Guide testing | Starts at $649 in Lenovo’s 2025 announcement |
| Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus AMOLED | A larger streaming canvas and 16:9 movie-friendly shape | 15.6-inch Full HD (1920×1080) AMOLED; Samsung claims true-to-life color and deep blacks, but the cited page gives no measured brightness or gamut | Up to 13 hours claimed by Samsung | $749.99 / £699 / AU$1,197 for the configuration tested by TechRadar |
Both displays can produce exceptionally dark blacks because OLED and AMOLED pixels can switch off in black areas. The Lenovo is the safer recommendation when “accurate” means a documented wide gamut and independent measurements. Samsung is the better fit when physical screen size and a conventional 16:9 streaming frame are your priorities.
Why OLED makes dark scenes look different
Black pixels can turn off
LCD Chromebooks use a backlight that remains on behind the liquid-crystal layer. Even when an LCD pixel is instructed to show black, some backlight leaks through, making blacks look gray in a dark room. OLED panels create light at each pixel. A black pixel can be switched off, so there is no backlight shining through it. The result is much stronger contrast between a star-filled sky and the stars, a night-time scene and its highlights, or black letterboxing and the image.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThat behavior is most visible when you watch in a dim room. In daylight, reflections and ambient light can lift the apparent black level of any glossy screen, including OLED. “Deep blacks” therefore describe the panel’s capability, not a guarantee that every room will look perfectly black.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Contrast is not the same as color accuracy
A panel can have perfect-looking blacks while still showing colors too strongly or too weakly. For accurate dark scenes, look at three separate properties:
- Black level and contrast: how dark the unlit parts of a frame appear and how clearly shadows separate from one another.
- Color gamut: how much of a color space the display can reproduce. DCI-P3 is broader than the sRGB space used by much web content and many older laptops.
- Calibration: whether hues and brightness track the intended values. A wide gamut does not automatically mean accurate output.
The Lenovo has both a manufacturer gamut claim and independent gamut testing. Samsung’s product page makes a strong AMOLED color claim, but the cited material does not provide a measured gamut, brightness figure or calibration result.

Independent display and battery results
Tom’s Guide measured 355.6 nits average brightness, 84.1% DCI-P3 coverage and 13 hours 19 minutes in its battery test. Those are test results under that publication’s conditions, not universal figures for every Lenovo configuration. The measured gamut is lower than Lenovo’s 100% specification, which can happen because manufacturers and reviewers use different test equipment, windows, modes and measurement procedures.
Tom’s Guide described the panel as color accurate with “deep, inky blacks” and said it was well suited to both productivity and Netflix viewing. TechRadar likewise called the OLED display “glorious” and among the best in its sector, highlighting vibrant color.
Strengths for dark-scene viewing
- OLED’s self-emissive pixels provide the fundamental black-level advantage over a backlit LCD.
- The 1920×1200 resolution is sharper vertically than 1920×1080 while remaining moderate enough for ChromeOS scaling.
- The documented DCI-P3 specification and independent measurements give you more information than Samsung’s cited page provides.
- Measured brightness is high enough for ordinary indoor use and, according to TechRadar, helps reduce the worst glossy-screen reflections.
Limitations
The screen is glossy. A window, lamp or bright ceiling light can reflect directly into dark portions of a movie, washing out the very blacks you bought OLED to see. The 14-inch size is also less immersive than Samsung’s 15.6-inch panel when the Chromebook is used as a stationary streaming screen.

Display and battery specification
Samsung describes this as “The only Chromebook Plus with AMOLED display.” Its panel is 15.6 inches diagonally, uses a 16:9 shape and displays 1920×1080 pixels. Samsung says the AMOLED screen delivers “true-to-life color, unbelievable brilliance and deep blacks,” and claims up to 13 hours of battery life.

The cited Samsung product page does not state measured brightness, DCI-P3 or sRGB coverage, color-calibration error, black-level measurements or a reviewer battery result. That does not prove the screen is inaccurate; it means there is less published evidence for ranking it above Lenovo on color fidelity.
Why choose Samsung
- Larger canvas: 15.6 inches is more comfortable when the Chromebook stays on a desk or bedside table.
- 16:9 framing: many films and television shows are mastered for 16:9 or wider ratios, so the shape feels familiar for video.
- AMOLED blacks: the same pixel-level shutoff principle gives dark areas the potential for very high contrast.
TechRadar listed a tested configuration at $749.99 in the United States, £699 in the United Kingdom and AU$1,197 in Australia. Those are regional prices for that review configuration, not a universal current price. Check the exact memory, storage, keyboard layout, seller and stock before ordering.

Do not treat the two battery claims as laboratory equivalents. “Up to” figures are manufacturer estimates, while the Lenovo 13:19 result is one reviewer’s controlled test. Brightness and gamut are likewise not directly comparable unless both products are measured with the same equipment and settings.

How to choose between them
Choose Lenovo for accuracy and mixed use
Pick the Lenovo when you edit photos, grade video casually, care about a documented wide color space, or carry the Chromebook between rooms. Its measured brightness, independent gamut result and 16:10 workspace make it the more evidence-backed all-rounder. The optional touch panel can also make Android apps and tablet-style interaction easier, but confirm that the specific configuration you are buying includes touch.

Choose Samsung for the biggest picture
Pick the Samsung when the Chromebook normally sits in one place and you value a 15.6-inch image over portability. The larger AMOLED surface is advantageous for subtitles, split-screen viewing and watching from farther away. Accept that the available product information does not establish its gamut or calibration as clearly as Lenovo’s.
Consider your room before you consider the panel
- Dim bedroom or office: OLED’s off pixels can deliver the most dramatic black-level improvement.
- Bright room with windows: prioritize placement and reflection control. Turn the screen away from direct light, close blinds or use a shaded lamp behind the display.
- Outdoor or very bright café use: neither cited product has a published HDR peak-brightness figure, so do not assume either will preserve highlights like a high-end HDR tablet or television.
What the published specifications do not tell you
Several measurements that matter to movie watchers are not supplied in the cited material:
- HDR peak brightness and HDR format support are not stated.
- Absolute black level in nits is not stated.
- Color-calibration error, such as Delta-E, is not stated.
- PWM or other flicker behavior is not stated.
- Current Amazon ASINs and continuously updated street prices are not established.
These omissions are reasons to verify a configuration before purchase, not evidence that either Chromebook fails in those areas. If you are sensitive to flicker, look for an independent test of the exact panel revision. If HDR streaming is important, confirm support in the listing and in ChromeOS settings rather than inferring it from the OLED or AMOLED label.
Set up an OLED Chromebook for better movie viewing
1. Match brightness to the room
- Open the ChromeOS Quick Settings panel by selecting the time in the lower-right corner.
- Use the brightness slider while a dark scene is on screen. Set it high enough that shadow detail is visible, but not so high that black bars become distracting gray reflections.
- In a bright room, change the room lighting or screen position before pushing brightness to maximum; reflections cannot be eliminated by brightness alone.
2. Check display controls
- Open Settings and select Device, then Displays.
- Confirm the built-in display is selected and review resolution and orientation options.
- Use the native resolution unless text is uncomfortably small. Lowering resolution can make interfaces softer and does not improve OLED contrast.
3. Keep color modes consistent
Use the same display mode when judging color. Night Light and similar warm-color filters intentionally alter white balance; disable them when you want to evaluate a film’s color grading, then re-enable them for late-night comfort if preferred. Browser extensions that alter contrast or color can also invalidate your visual comparison.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
4. Stream at the service’s highest available quality
A perfect black level cannot restore detail removed by a low-bitrate stream. Use a reliable connection, select the highest quality allowed by your subscription and app, and compare the same title and scene on both Chromebooks. Some services deliver different resolutions or codecs depending on browser, app and account conditions.
5. Prevent unnecessary static images
When you finish watching, let the Chromebook sleep instead of leaving a paused frame or bright application window on screen for hours. Set an automatic screen timeout in ChromeOS power settings. This is a sensible precaution for any OLED device and also saves battery.
Buying checklist
- Confirm whether the Lenovo unit is the OLED model; Chromebook families can include LCD and OLED configurations under similar names.
- Check the exact RAM and storage combination. Lenovo’s ceiling is up to 16GB memory and 256GB storage, but not every retailer carries the maximum configuration.
- Verify touch support if you need it; Lenovo lists touch as optional.
- Compare the local price with the documented $649 Lenovo starting price or the regional Samsung review price, accounting for configuration differences and taxes.
- Inspect the return policy for dead pixels, uneven tint, visible scratches and reflections that make the screen unsuitable for your room.
- Confirm ChromeOS update eligibility and the automatic-update-expiration date for the exact model before paying. This is model- and configuration-specific.
- Look for independent flicker, HDR and calibration measurements if those factors affect your eyes or workflow.
Which OLED Chromebook should you buy?
Best overall: Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 OLED
Buy the Lenovo if you want the strongest combination of deep blacks, documented color capability, measured brightness, battery endurance and a portable 16:10 design. Its published claims are supported by independent testing, while the main compromises are glossy reflections and a smaller screen than Samsung’s.
Best for a large streaming screen: Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus AMOLED
Buy the Samsung if the 15.6-inch 16:9 display is the deciding factor and you are comfortable with less published measurement data. Its AMOLED construction is well suited to high-contrast movie scenes, but verify current regional pricing and the exact configuration.
Neither choice has enough published information to declare a winner for HDR peak brightness, flicker, absolute black level or calibration error. For the specific goal of accurate dark scenes and deep blacks, Lenovo is the more defensible recommendation; Samsung is the sensible alternative when screen size comes first.
