Wise Old Man is the best overall tracker for a long-term Old School RuneScape account history, OSRS Goal Planner is the best for complicated goals with prerequisites, and RuneLite’s XP Tracker is the simplest option for individual skill milestones. They solve different problems rather than competing as identical products: Wise Old Man builds a historical record, OSRS Goal Planner maps dependencies inside the client, and RuneLite XP Tracker measures skill progress toward a level.
The most reliable approach for a multi-month or multi-year account is to use the tool that matches each layer of your plan. Start a Wise Old Man profile early so snapshots accumulate, use OSRS Goal Planner when a quest, diary, boss or item has blockers, and use RuneLite’s built-in tracker for precise XP targets.

Wise Old Man: best for a durable account history and clans
Wise Old Man is an open-source Old School RuneScape progress tracker that periodically checks the official hiscores and stores snapshots. Those snapshots let you review skill and activity gains, achievements, records and leaderboard position instead of relying on memory or a single current hiscore page.

What its history actually measures
A profile is not a continuous recording of every action. Wise Old Man compares the snapshots it has stored. Its documentation says that at least two snapshots are required before it can calculate gains over a time window. A profile updated once will show current information, but it cannot produce a meaningful before-and-after report until another snapshot exists.
That distinction matters for a long account goal. A player who waits until the end of a year to create a profile loses the ability to show how the account progressed during that year. Creating or updating the profile near the beginning of the project gives later reports a baseline.
Ways to update a profile
- Website: request an update from the Wise Old Man profile page when you want a manual snapshot.
- RuneLite plugin: install the Wise Old Man plugin if you want updates associated with logging out through the client.
- Discord bot: use the bot when your clan or community already organizes progress reporting in Discord.
Updates are opt-in. Wise Old Man does not automatically create a history for every RuneScape account; the player must request updates through one of these methods.
Why clans benefit from it
Wise Old Man supports groups, competitions, clan rankings, member-list changes and inactivity views. Those features turn individual snapshots into a shared cadence: a clan can see who has gained levels, compare progress during an event, identify inactive accounts and maintain a current member list. Discord notifications can publish relevant changes without requiring every player to open the website.
This is a different type of planning from a personal prerequisite list. Wise Old Man can show that a player gained 10 million XP or moved on a leaderboard, but it does not build the quest, item and skill chain needed to unlock a particular achievement.
Wise Old Man setup for a new long-term account
- Open Wise Old Man and request the first profile update using your exact in-game name and account mode.
- Confirm that the displayed hiscores match the intended account before treating the profile as your baseline.
- Install the RuneLite plugin if you want logout-based updates; otherwise schedule a manual website or Discord update at a regular interval.
- Record the date of the first snapshot in your own goal notes so later reports have a clear starting point.
- For a clan project, add the account to the appropriate group and configure the group’s competition or notification settings.
Limitations to plan around
- Gains are only as complete as the snapshots available. Missing updates create gaps in the history.
- At least two snapshots are needed for a gain calculation over a period.
- It is not a full in-game prerequisite planner; you still need another method to map blockers for quests, diaries, bosses or item grinds.

How the dependency tree works
When you add a quest, diary or boss, the planner can seed a prerequisite tree. That tree may include required skill levels, earlier quests, items, account metrics and boss-kill requirements. Instead of keeping a separate checklist and discovering a missing requirement late, you can inspect the chain from the top-level goal down to its blockers.

For example, adding a high-level quest can expose an earlier quest requirement, the skill level needed for that earlier quest and an item requirement that must be obtained separately. The tree is useful because it distinguishes the final objective from the work that unlocks it.
What updates automatically
The cards in the planner update from the game state rather than from manual percentage estimates:
- Skills are checked by experience and level.
- Quests are checked by completion state.
- Achievement diaries use their in-game varbit state.
- Combat achievements use completed task data.
- Boss goals use kill counts.
- Item goals use the quantities detected for the account.
- Account metrics use the relevant game-state values.
This makes the planner suitable for a campaign that mixes different requirement types. A single percentage bar would not tell you whether the real blocker is a quest, an item, a diary task or a combat threshold; the cards can identify the category directly.
Setup procedure
- Install the OSRS Goal Planner plugin through RuneLite’s plugin configuration.
- Open its sidebar panel and add the end goal: a quest, diary, combat-achievement tier, boss, item grind or account milestone.
- Expand the generated prerequisite tree and inspect each child requirement.
- Convert major branches into an order that fits your account, such as training a skill before completing the quest that needs it.
- Play normally while the plugin reads the game state and updates the cards.
- Recheck the tree whenever you finish a branch, because completing one requirement can reveal that another branch is now the bottleneck.
Maintenance and availability caveat
OSRS Goal Planner is a RuneLite plugin project. Verify that the current plugin listing, release and maintenance status still support your RuneLite version before basing a long campaign on it. A planner that stops receiving updates may no longer interpret new game-state changes correctly, even if an old goal list remains visible.

RuneLite XP Tracker: best for straightforward skill milestones
RuneLite’s official XP Tracker is the lightest solution when your goal is expressed as a level or XP number. It supports targets beyond the next level, so you can set a milestone such as 70, 80, 90 or 99 instead of watching only the immediate level-up.
Setting a level goal
- Open RuneLite’s sidebar and select the XP Tracker or Level Goals interface.
- Choose the skill you want to train.
- Set the target level beyond the next level when needed.
- Train normally and watch the remaining XP and progress toward that target.
After a selected goal is passed, the tracker returns to showing progress toward the next level. That behavior is useful for continuous training, but it means a completed target is not a permanent historical record.
Where it fits and where it stops
Use it for a quest requirement, a combat-stat milestone, a skilling target or a level-99 plan. The cited documentation covers skill and XP goals; it does not describe an account-wide quest, diary, item or clan planning system. If your plan depends on several non-skill prerequisites, pair it with OSRS Goal Planner rather than trying to represent the entire project as XP bars.

Choose Wise Old Man when history is the deliverable
Pick Wise Old Man if you want dated evidence of gains, leaderboard movement, activity or clan participation. It is also the practical choice when several players need a shared view of progress, competitions or inactivity. Start snapshots before the project begins; the first update alone cannot calculate a trend.
Choose OSRS Goal Planner when blockers are the problem
Pick OSRS Goal Planner when you can name the destination but not every requirement. It is the strongest fit for a quest series, achievement diary completion, combat-achievement push, boss unlock or item grind that depends on several skills, quests and account metrics.
Choose RuneLite XP Tracker when one number defines success
Pick RuneLite XP Tracker when the next decision is simply how much XP remains. It has the lowest planning overhead and keeps the target visible during a training session.

Use more than one when the project has several layers
A long-term account usually has both a dependency problem and a measurement problem. OSRS Goal Planner can tell you what to do next, RuneLite XP Tracker can show the XP needed for the current skill branch, and Wise Old Man can preserve the account’s progress between sessions and across months.

A practical workflow for multi-month OSRS goals
- Define the outcome: write the exact quest, diary tier, boss, item, combat-achievement tier or account milestone you want to complete.
- Create a historical baseline: request a Wise Old Man update before substantial training. This establishes the first snapshot for later gain reports.
- Build the dependency map: add the end goal to OSRS Goal Planner and expand its prerequisite tree.
- Find the current bottleneck: identify the lowest skill, missing quest, absent item, required account metric or boss-kill threshold that blocks the next branch.
- Set a measurable sub-goal: use RuneLite’s XP Tracker for a skill target, or keep the relevant planner card as the completion measure for a quest, diary, item or boss requirement.
- Train and complete branches: finish one coherent group of requirements rather than switching randomly between unrelated goals.
- Update the historical record: let the Wise Old Man plugin update on logout or request a website/Discord update at the interval you chose.
- Replan after major unlocks: reopen the dependency tree when a quest, skill or item branch is completed; the next bottleneck may have changed.
- Review the campaign: use Wise Old Man’s gain view to evaluate the period, while the planner and XP Tracker remain focused on the next actionable requirement.
Milestone design that stays useful
Large goals become easier to maintain when each has a clear completion test. Use milestones that correspond to actual game requirements, not arbitrary time spent playing.

Keep the top-level objective visible, but work on only the branch that is currently actionable. This prevents a long prerequisite tree from becoming an unprioritized wall of checkboxes.
Troubleshooting common tracking failures
Wise Old Man shows no gains
Check whether the profile has more than one snapshot. A single update provides current hiscore data but no interval for comparison. If the second snapshot is recent, wait for the next scheduled update or request another one after meaningful progress.
The Wise Old Man profile is for the wrong account
Verify the in-game name, account mode and hiscore values before sharing the profile or adding it to a clan group. Correct the profile selection before collecting more snapshots; otherwise the history will describe the wrong character.

Confirm that the Wise Old Man RuneLite plugin is installed and enabled, then check that you are logging out through the client profile you intended to track. If plugin-based updates remain unreliable, use a website request or the Discord bot as a manual fallback.

OSRS Goal Planner does not mark a requirement complete
Inspect the requirement type. Skills depend on XP and level, quests on completion state, diaries on varbit state, combat achievements on task completion, bosses on kill counts and items on detected quantities. Confirm that the in-game state actually meets the card’s condition and that the plugin is current for your RuneLite version.
The dependency tree feels overwhelming
Collapse branches that are not on the current route, then select one blocker as the next milestone. A tree is a map of possibilities; it is not a command to complete every branch in display order.
RuneLite XP Tracker keeps showing the next level
That is expected after a selected goal is passed. Set the next milestone again if you want a new long-range target, or leave it in its normal next-level mode for session training.
Privacy, opt-in tracking and account sharing
Wise Old Man updates are opt-in, so decide which accounts you want visible before requesting snapshots or joining a public group. A historical profile can reveal progress, activity patterns and leaderboard movement over time. Clan administrators should explain how member lists, competitions and Discord notifications will be used, while players should avoid sharing account credentials with any tracker or community.
RuneLite plugins read game-state information available to the client. Keep the plugins updated through RuneLite’s normal plugin system and remove any planner that is no longer maintained or no longer needed for your goals.
Final recommendation
For most serious long-term accounts, make Wise Old Man the historical layer, OSRS Goal Planner the dependency layer and RuneLite XP Tracker the session layer. If you want only one tool, choose Wise Old Man for a record of growth, OSRS Goal Planner for a complex end goal, or RuneLite XP Tracker for a single skill target. The right choice depends on whether your hardest problem is remembering progress, discovering prerequisites or measuring XP.
