For a weak PC, start with 1280×720 at 30 fps, keep Base (Canvas) Resolution at your monitor or source resolution, lower Output (Scaled) Resolution, and select a hardware encoder such as NVENC, Intel Quick Sync, or AMD VCE when OBS offers one. Use the simplest scene possible, close unnecessary applications, and watch OBS Stats while recording. If 720p30 is stable, test 720p60 and then 1080p30 one at a time; keep the profile with stable frame pacing in your actual workload.

Recommended starting profile

The settings below are a conservative baseline, not a universal preset. OBS performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and what the computer is doing at the same time. OBS explicitly notes that a compatible computer is not automatically capable of smooth recording.

OBS setting Starting value Why it is the starting point
Base (Canvas) Resolution Your monitor or source resolution Preserves the coordinate space used by your captures and sources. Lower this only when the GPU is severely starved.
Output (Scaled) Resolution 1280×720 Reduces the number of pixels OBS must render and encode.
Common FPS Value 30 60 fps can be very taxing compared with 30 fps; 30 is the safer fallback when recording lags.
Encoder Hardware encoder, if available NVENC, Intel Quick Sync, and AMD VCE can move encoding work away from the CPU.
Scene design Minimal Browser sources, animated overlays, filters, multiple captures, and high-resolution webcams add rendering work.

This profile favors consistent motion and a usable file over maximum sharpness. It is particularly suitable for a weak computer recording gameplay, a desktop demonstration, or a webcam-and-screen layout where dropped frames are more distracting than reduced resolution.

Why 720p30 is the sensible first test

Lower resolution reduces both rendering and encoding work

Output resolution controls the size of the video OBS produces. At 1280×720, OBS has fewer pixels to process than at 1920×1080, so the graphics pipeline and encoder have less work to do. This is why lowering Output (Scaled) Resolution should normally come before changing the canvas.

Thirty frames per second leaves more headroom

A 60-fps recording contains twice as many frames per second as a 30-fps recording. OBS says 60-fps output can be very taxing compared with 30 fps, and its troubleshooting guidance recommends dropping from 60 to 30 when 60 fps is not working. The trade-off is visible motion: 60 fps can look smoother, but it needs more rendering and encoding capacity.

Use a controlled upgrade path

Do not change several demanding settings at once. Record the same representative scene at 720p30 first. If frame pacing is stable, test 720p60. If that remains stable and you need more detail, test 1080p30. The best setting is the highest-quality profile that remains stable during the applications, scenes, and actions you actually record.

Configure the profile in OBS Studio

1. Set the canvas and output resolutions

  1. Open OBS Studio and choose Settings.
  2. Open the Video section.
  3. Leave Base (Canvas) Resolution at the resolution of the monitor, game capture, or other primary source in most cases.
  4. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720.
  5. Set the common FPS value to 30.
  6. Apply the changes and close the settings window.

The canvas is the workspace in which sources are positioned. Lowering it changes that workspace, so sources may need to be repositioned and resized. OBS reserves lowering the base canvas for systems that are severely starved for GPU resources; it is not the first lever to pull on an otherwise workable setup.

2. Choose an encoder

  1. Return to Settings and open Output.
  2. Use the recording encoder selector and choose an available hardware encoder first: NVENC, Intel Quick Sync, or AMD VCE.
  3. If no hardware encoder is available, select x264 and use a faster preset rather than a slower, quality-focused preset.
  4. Apply the setting and make a short local recording before judging the result.

A hardware encoder is not a guarantee of smoothness. OBS still has to render the scene, capture the source, write the file, and coordinate with the application being recorded. A hardware encoder is the first experiment because it can reduce CPU pressure, not because it removes every other bottleneck.

3. Keep the scene simple while testing

Create a test scene with only the source you need: for example, one display capture or window capture. Add a webcam, browser source, animated overlay, filter, or second capture only after the basic scene records cleanly. This isolates whether the problem is the encoder or the scene itself.

4. Close competing applications

Close unnecessary browsers, launchers, utilities, and background applications before recording. Extra programs can consume CPU, GPU time, memory, or disk bandwidth. Repeat the test with the applications you genuinely need open, because a profile that works on an empty desktop may fail when the real workload starts.

5. Record to a drive with adequate free space

OBS needs room to write the recording. A nearly full or heavily occupied drive can create a separate failure even when the encoder is coping. Keep adequate free space and avoid using the recording drive for intensive transfers during the test.

How to decide between 720p30, 720p60, and 1080p30

Profile Choose it when Main benefit Main cost
720p30 You need the safest starting point or your PC is struggling Lowest workload of the three profiles Less detail and less fluid motion
720p60 720p30 is stable and motion clarity matters Smoother movement while retaining a reduced output resolution Much more frame processing than 30 fps
1080p30 720p30 is stable and detail matters more than high-motion smoothness Higher spatial detail at a moderate frame rate More pixels to render and encode than 720p

Compare profiles using the same scene and action. Check smoothness, clarity during motion, file size, CPU and GPU utilization, and whether the resulting file works in your intended editor or player. Do not select a profile from a short idle-desktop test if the real recording involves a demanding game, scrolling browser source, camera feed, or animated overlay.

Use OBS Stats to find the actual bottleneck

Open the statistics view during a representative recording

Start a recording that reproduces the problem, then open OBS Stats. Watch the counters while you move through the scene or perform the task that normally causes lag. The important categories are rendering lag, encoding lag, and skipped or missed frames.

  • Rendering lag: OBS is struggling to render the scene or capture frames on time. A complex scene, an overworked GPU, or a demanding application can contribute.
  • Encoding lag: The selected encoder cannot process frames quickly enough. Lowering output resolution or frame rate, changing encoder, or using a faster x264 preset can help.
  • Skipped or missed frames: Frames are not reaching the recording smoothly. Treat the counter as evidence that the current profile is not holding its timing under load.

Stats identify symptoms rather than prescribing one setting. Make one change, record again, and observe whether the relevant counter improves. This is more reliable than judging a profile from the preview alone.

A practical troubleshooting sequence

Use this order so that each change has a clear purpose and you can undo a change that does not help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Reproduce the issue. Record a short clip of the real scene and task. Note whether the problem is visible stutter, a warning in OBS Stats, or a file that will not play correctly.
  2. Lower Output (Scaled) Resolution. If you are above 1280×720, reduce it first. Keep the Base (Canvas) Resolution unchanged unless the GPU remains severely constrained.
  3. Reduce 60 fps to 30 fps. This is the recommended fallback when 60 fps is producing lag.
  4. Select a hardware encoder. Try NVENC, Intel Quick Sync, or AMD VCE when the system exposes one. If none is available, use a faster x264 preset and accept the associated quality or file-size trade-off.
  5. Simplify the scene. Remove animated overlays, browser sources, unnecessary filters, extra captures, and oversized webcam feeds. Add them back individually to identify the expensive source.
  6. Close unnecessary applications. Repeat the recording with only the software required for the task.
  7. Check the recording drive. Ensure it has adequate free space and is not being saturated by another transfer or recording job.
  8. Make a comparable local recording. After each change, use the same scene and action. Keep the profile that produces stable frame pacing without making the output unusably soft or incompatible with your editor.

This sequence deliberately avoids claiming a universal benchmark. The useful result is a stable profile on your machine, under the workload you care about.

Hardware encoder versus x264

Hardware encoding

NVENC, Intel Quick Sync, and AMD VCE are hardware-encoding options that may be available through the graphics processor or integrated media hardware. OBS recommends hardware encoding for recording when it is available. It is the first choice for a weak CPU because it can move encoding work away from the processor that is also running the game, browser, editor, or desktop task.

Hardware encoding still depends on the rest of the system. A scene that overwhelms the GPU can show rendering lag even when encoding itself is handled by dedicated hardware. A slow or nearly full drive can also interrupt an otherwise successful encode.

x264

x264 performs the encode on the CPU. If no hardware encoder is exposed, a faster x264 preset is the practical fallback. Faster presets generally trade some compression efficiency for lower CPU demand, so the resulting file may be larger or less clear at an equivalent setting. The right choice is the one that keeps the CPU from falling behind during the real workload.

How to compare them

Use identical resolution, frame rate, scene, and activity. Compare OBS Stats, motion clarity, file size, CPU and GPU utilization, and playback compatibility. A hardware encoder that produces a stable but slightly different-looking file is usually preferable to an x264 configuration that creates encoding lag.

Reduce scene complexity without ruining the recording

Browser sources

Browser sources can run scripts, animations, and video inside the scene. Remove them during diagnosis or replace a moving element with a static image when the overlay is not essential. Reintroduce each browser source separately so you know which one changes the rendering load.

Animated overlays

Animated alerts and transitions require continuous rendering. If the recording stutters only while an animation is visible, test a static version or remove the animation from the low-end profile.

Filters and multiple captures

Every additional capture and filter adds processing. Begin with one display, window, or game capture. Add the webcam and other sources one at a time, watching Stats after each addition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Webcam resolution

A high-resolution webcam is unnecessary when the final output is 720p. Use the simplest camera feed that remains clear at the chosen output size, and avoid adding a large camera source merely because the camera can produce it.

Recording and streaming are not the same problem

For local recording, the main constraints are scene rendering, encoding capacity, and writing the file. Streaming also depends on the network connection and configured bitrate. OBS explains that rising dropped-frame counters during streaming indicate the connection cannot keep up with the configured bitrate.

When recording, try OBS’s Simple output presets and an available hardware encoder. Do not treat a streaming bitrate recommendation as a universal local-recording value. OBS’s overview uses around 160 kbps as an audio-bitrate example for streaming; that figure is not a blanket setting for every local recording.

A profile can record locally without dropped network frames because no upload is involved, yet the same scene can fail as a stream if the connection cannot sustain the stream’s bitrate. Diagnose those cases separately.

When a capture card helps—and when it does not

A USB HDMI capture card can bring video from a console, camera, or second computer into OBS. It is useful when the weak PC should receive an external HDMI signal rather than render the game or application itself.

It is not a universal fix for recording the same weak PC’s display. If the computer is rendering the game and also capturing its own desktop, a capture card does not remove the workload of running that game or building a complex OBS scene. Use one when your source is genuinely external and you need HDMI capture.

Common symptoms and targeted fixes

Symptom Likely area to investigate First change
Recording is choppy at 60 fps Frame-processing load Change 60 fps to 30 fps, then retest.
OBS Stats shows rendering lag GPU or scene complexity Remove browser sources, animated overlays, filters, and extra captures; lower output resolution.
OBS Stats shows encoding lag Encoder capacity Use a hardware encoder; if unavailable, choose a faster x264 preset and consider 30 fps.
Only a complex layout stutters Scene composition Build a minimal scene and add sources back individually.
Recording fails during heavy disk activity Storage throughput or free space Record to a drive with adequate free space and avoid competing transfers.
Local recording is fine but streaming drops frames Network capacity Check the streaming dropped-frame counter and the configured bitrate; local recording settings alone cannot fix an overloaded connection.

How to choose the final profile

Choose the profile that meets the purpose of the recording rather than the profile with the largest numbers. For a tutorial, 720p30 may be sufficient if text remains readable and motion is limited. For fast gameplay, 720p60 may be worth the additional load only when Stats remains clean. For a software demonstration where small interface details matter, 1080p30 can be preferable if the PC can sustain it.

  • Prioritize stability when a missed frame would make a tutorial, presentation, or gameplay clip difficult to follow.
  • Prioritize motion when rapid camera movement is central and 60 fps remains stable.
  • Prioritize detail when viewers must read small interface elements and 1080p30 records without encoding or rendering lag.
  • Prioritize compatibility when the file must open in a particular editor or player; test the actual file, not just the OBS preview.

There is no single OBS setting that guarantees smooth recording on every compatible PC. Encoder choice, output resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, other applications, and storage conditions all matter. Start at 720p30 with a hardware encoder, measure the real workload in OBS Stats, and move upward only when the recording remains stable.
