Choose the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) for the biggest noise-cancellation upgrade, the Sony WF-1000XM5 for the best balance of battery life and features, the AirPods Pro 3 for iPhone calls and Apple integration, or the Technics EAH-AZ80 if sound quality and multipoint matter most. “Better than Nothing Ear” is not one measurement: the best replacement depends on whether you want quieter trains, clearer calls in traffic, longer listening with ANC enabled, or a particular phone ecosystem.

Which Nothing Ear alternative is best for your priority?

These four models address different weaknesses. Bose is the clearest choice when maximum ANC is the goal. Sony gives up some absolute ANC intensity for a strong all-round package, long ANC-on endurance and useful multipoint behavior. AirPods Pro 3 is the most convincing option for iPhone owners who value call clarity and system-level features. Technics is aimed at listeners who will accept less aggressive ANC in exchange for excellent, neutral sound and multipoint connectivity.

Model Best for ANC performance Calls ANC-on battery evidence Case total
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) Maximum ANC Strongest overall in the cited comparison, especially against low- and midrange noise Winner in What Hi-Fi’s Bose-versus-Sony comparison 6 hours per charge 24 hours with ANC
Sony WF-1000XM5 All-rounder, battery and multipoint Very strong low-frequency cancellation; slightly less intense than Bose in the cited comparison Good overall; streamlined design helps reduce wind noise 8 hours (Tom’s Guide, 2026) 24 hours with ANC (What Hi-Fi, accessed 2026)
AirPods Pro 3 iPhone calls and Apple features Apple claims up to twice the ANC of AirPods Pro 2; this is a manufacturer claim, not an independent multiplier Voice Isolation and upgraded microphones Up to 8 hours with ANC on (Apple, 2026) Not stated in the cited Apple figure
Technics EAH-AZ80 Sound quality and multipoint Good, but it does not match the strongest competition Not singled out as the group leader Mode not specified in the cited figure 25 hours total (TechRadar, 2023)

Battery figures are not directly interchangeable. Sony, Bose and AirPods figures above explicitly refer to ANC use, while the Technics figures do not specify the listening mode. Firmware, volume, codec, call time and temperature can also reduce real-world endurance.

Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen): the strongest ANC upgrade

Why choose Bose

What Hi-Fi’s comparison found that Bose silences a broader range of sound than Sony, including conversation, train rumble and traffic. That range matters more than a single laboratory-style number: low-frequency engine noise is only part of a commute, and midrange voices are often what make an office or carriage feel loud. What Hi-Fi described the second-generation model as another impressive showing from a company that has long dominated noise cancellation.

If your complaint about Nothing Ear is that outside sound remains intelligible with ANC on, Bose is the safest upgrade based on the available comparison. It is the model to pick for aircraft cabins, rail travel, buses and busy open-plan spaces where both droning and human voices are present.

Calls and microphones

In the Bose-versus-Sony comparison, What Hi-Fi named Bose the overall ANC and call-quality winner. That does not mean Bose wins every individual condition: Sony’s streamlined design was specifically praised for minimizing wind noise. Expect Bose to be the stronger general-purpose calling choice, while recognizing that gusty outdoor conditions can narrow the gap.

Battery and trade-offs

What Hi-Fi reports 6 hours per charge and 24 hours total with ANC for the QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen). That is shorter per-earbud endurance than Sony’s cited 8-hour ANC figure and equal to Sony’s cited 24-hour case total. The trade is straightforward: Bose gives you more aggressive noise reduction, but Sony gives you longer continuous ANC listening before you return the earbuds to the case.

Who should skip Bose

  • Choose Sony instead if an 8-hour ANC session is more important than the last increment of cancellation.
  • Choose AirPods Pro 3 if your daily calls and device switching happen mainly on an iPhone, iPad and Mac.
  • Choose Technics if your priority is a neutral, high-quality presentation rather than maximum isolation.

Sony WF-1000XM5: the best all-rounder for ANC battery life

Noise cancellation without the shortest runtime

Tom’s Guide reports 8 hours of ANC playback for the WF-1000XM5. What Hi-Fi reports 24 hours total with ANC when the charging case is included. Sony is particularly effective against low-frequency noise, such as aircraft and train engines, although the cited comparison gives Bose the edge for broader low- and midrange suppression.

This makes Sony a sensible replacement when Nothing Ear feels close to adequate but does not last long enough for a workday, long flight or several commutes. You receive a long continuous session without moving to a larger or more specialized earbud.

Call behavior in wind and traffic

What Hi-Fi says the Sonys do a great job minimizing wind noise because of their streamlined design. That is useful for walking calls and exposed platforms. In the same comparison, however, Bose was judged the overall call-quality winner, so select Sony for wind resistance and battery balance rather than assuming it is the universal microphone champion.

Multipoint and everyday flexibility

Sony is the strongest recommendation here when you regularly move between two devices. The WF-1000XM5 is noted for strong multipoint features, allowing a laptop and phone to remain part of the same workflow instead of forcing a manual disconnect each time a call arrives. No complete codec list or platform-specific feature matrix is provided in the cited material, so check the current regional specification before buying if a particular codec is essential.

When Sony is the better value decision

  • You want longer ANC-on listening than Bose’s cited 6 hours.
  • You split time between a phone and a computer and need multipoint behavior.
  • You make calls outdoors where wind reduction is especially important.
  • You prefer strong low-frequency ANC but do not require the broadest possible suppression of voices.

AirPods Pro 3: the iPhone-first choice for calls

Voice Isolation and microphone improvements

Apple says AirPods Pro 3 reduce background noise and isolate voices during calls through Voice Isolation and upgraded microphones. For iPhone users, that system-level processing is the main reason to choose them: the earbuds are designed around the same ecosystem as the phone, rather than treating call quality as an isolated hardware specification.

Apple lists up to 8 hours of listening with ANC enabled. That matches Sony’s cited per-charge figure, although Apple’s case-total figure is not stated in the cited material, so do not assume the two packages provide the same number of recharges.

How much stronger is the ANC?

Apple claims AirPods Pro 3 provide up to twice the ANC of AirPods Pro 2. “Up to twice” is a manufacturer comparison, not an independent laboratory result and not a guarantee that every frequency will be reduced by a factor of two. Treat it as Apple’s positioning of the model rather than a direct Bose-versus-Sony measurement.

For an iPhone owner, the practical question is whether Apple’s combination of isolation, call processing and seamless device behavior solves more problems than a model with a higher standalone ANC reputation. If most of your listening is on Apple hardware, AirPods Pro 3 is the most compelling fit in this group.

Limits for non-Apple users

AirPods Pro 3 can still be used with other phones, but the reason to pay for them is weaker when you cannot use the Apple-specific workflow. The cited material does not provide a complete Android feature, codec or multipoint specification, so Android buyers should verify the functions they need before choosing them over Sony or Technics.

Technics EAH-AZ80: the sound-first alternative with multipoint

Sound quality

TechRadar describes the EAH-AZ80 as sounding phenomenal for listeners who like a neutral presentation. That tuning is the central reason to buy it: instruments and vocals are presented without the pronounced bass emphasis some travel-focused earbuds use to make music feel exciting under ANC.

ANC and comfort expectations

TechRadar also notes that the AZ80’s ANC does not quite match the strongest competition. It can reduce everyday background noise, but it is not the right pick if your single objective is the quietest aircraft cabin or the most effective suppression of nearby speech. A secure, comfortable seal remains essential; an imperfect fit can make any ANC system seem weak.

Battery and charging

The cited TechRadar figures are 7 hours from the earbuds and 25 hours total with the case. The source does not specify whether those numbers were measured with ANC enabled, so compare them cautiously with the explicitly ANC-on figures for Bose, Sony and AirPods. Wireless charging is included, which is useful if your desk or travel kit already uses a charging pad.

Multipoint advantage

Technics is a strong option for people who need to keep two devices connected while prioritizing music quality. The cited material identifies multipoint as a notable strength, but it does not provide a complete list of supported codecs or platform-specific restrictions. Confirm the current regional specification if your laptop, phone or preferred codec is unusual.

ANC, calls and battery: what “better” really means

ANC across different frequencies

Noise cancellation is not a single slider. Earbuds generally have an easier time with steady, low-frequency sounds such as engines than with changing, midrange sounds such as speech. Bose is the only model in this group specifically credited with a broader advantage covering both low and midrange noise. Sony is credited with strong low-frequency cancellation. AirPods Pro 3’s “up to twice” statement is an Apple claim against AirPods Pro 2, not a cross-brand test. Technics is described as competent but below the strongest competition.

Microphones in real places

For calls, separate wind performance from general voice quality. Sony’s streamlined design helps minimize wind noise. Bose won the overall call-quality comparison cited by What Hi-Fi. Apple emphasizes Voice Isolation and upgraded microphones on AirPods Pro 3. No comparable microphone score is provided for Technics, so it should not be marketed as the call leader on the evidence available.

Battery mode labels

Always ask whether a quoted runtime includes ANC. Bose is listed at 6 hours per charge and 24 hours total with ANC. Sony is listed at 8 hours per charge by Tom’s Guide and 24 hours total with ANC by What Hi-Fi. Apple lists up to 8 hours with ANC on for AirPods Pro 3, without a case-total figure in the cited material. Technics is listed at 7 hours per earbud and 25 hours total, but the mode is not stated. A longer number measured with ANC off is not a longer ANC session.

Fit and seal can change the result more than the model name

Passive sealing is the foundation of electronic ANC. If the ear tip is too small, low-frequency sound leaks around it and the microphones cannot fully compensate. If it is too large, pressure and discomfort can make you loosen the earbud, creating the same leak. Test the supplied tip sizes on both ears, then walk, talk and chew before judging cancellation.

  • Use the size that stays sealed when you turn your head but does not create painful pressure.
  • Re-seat each earbud after inserting it; a small rotation can improve the seal.
  • Test ANC with both an engine-like hum and nearby speech, because performance can differ by frequency.
  • Compare comfort after at least 30 minutes. A theoretically stronger model is not better if you remove it repeatedly.

Fit also affects calls. A loose earbud changes microphone position and can expose the microphones to more wind, so a stable seal is part of the call-quality decision rather than a separate comfort concern.

The cited material does not establish a universal codec ranking or a complete multipoint compatibility chart. If you use a particular laptop operating system, high-resolution codec or gaming device, check the manufacturer’s current specification for that exact region and firmware.

Consumer Reports scores: useful context, not a Nothing Ear head-to-head

Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide lists these overall scores: Sony WF-1000XM5, 86; Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds, 77; Technics EAH-AZ100, 73; and AirPods Pro 2, 72. These are not a direct test against Nothing Ear, and the Technics entry is the EAH-AZ100 rather than the EAH-AZ80 discussed in this article. Use the scores as broader buying-guide context, not as a substitute for the model-specific ANC, call and battery evidence above.

Availability, price and generation checks

Prices and stock change by country, retailer and date, and the cited material does not establish a current universal price for any of the four models. Before ordering, confirm the exact generation, warranty region, return policy and whether the listing is for new stock rather than refurbished or an older package.

  1. Match the product name exactly: “QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen),” “WF-1000XM5,” “AirPods Pro 3” or “EAH-AZ80.”
  2. Check that the listing specifies your country’s warranty and charging accessories.
  3. Compare the advertised battery mode. An ANC-off figure should not be used to promise ANC-on endurance.
  4. Verify app and firmware compatibility with your phone and computer before paying.
  5. Use a return window to test seal, comfort, calls in wind and ANC against both low-frequency rumble and speech.

A practical decision guide

Pick Bose if silence is the primary goal

Choose the QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) when you want the broadest reduction of traffic, train rumble and chatter and accept a cited 6-hour ANC session.

Pick Sony if endurance and flexibility matter most

Choose the WF-1000XM5 when 8 hours of ANC playback, a 24-hour ANC total and strong multipoint behavior outweigh Bose’s broader cancellation advantage.

Pick AirPods Pro 3 for iPhone-centered calling

Choose AirPods Pro 3 when Voice Isolation, upgraded microphones and Apple integration are more valuable than a manufacturer claim that still needs to be interpreted separately from independent cross-brand testing.

Pick Technics for neutral sound

Choose the EAH-AZ80 when music quality, wireless charging and multipoint are central and you are comfortable with ANC that does not quite reach the category leaders.

Bottom line

There is no single replacement that wins every category. Bose is the clearest ANC upgrade, Sony is the most balanced long-running option, AirPods Pro 3 is the strongest iPhone call choice, and Technics is the sound-first alternative. Whichever model you choose, fit the ear tips carefully and compare battery figures only when the ANC mode is stated.
