Goodnotes is the strongest starting point for most people who want handwritten notebooks and PDF markup in one library, while Notability is a compelling note-focused alternative. Neither has been established as a universal winner. The right choice depends on your device, whether you need handwriting search or scan OCR, how deeply you edit PDFs, and whether you need audio, collaboration, or long-term export.
Before paying, import one of your real PDFs, write several pages in your normal style, test search, and export the result. That short trial reveals more than a feature checklist because the comparisons available for these apps are vendor-authored rather than independent laboratory tests.
What is the best app for handwritten notes and PDFs?
Choose by workflow rather than by a single overall ranking:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Goodnotes: the most balanced handwriting-first workspace for notebooks, PDF annotation, library-wide retrieval, and optional audio or collaboration features.
- Notability: a note-focused alternative with handwriting recognition and instant handwriting search in its Classic offering.
- MyScript Notes (formerly Nebo): worth testing when converting handwriting to typed text is your priority.
- OneNote: a practical cross-platform starting point for people already using Microsoft tools, although several ink and AI capabilities are limited or tied to Windows and paid plans.
- Apple Notes: a convenient built-in option inside an Apple-only setup, with handwriting conversion and handwriting/PDF search listed as supported in Goodnotes’ comparison.
- PDF Expert: a specialist choice when PDF work matters more than notebook management and you use compatible Apple hardware and software.
- Samsung Notes: a sensible free Galaxy option when your notes and stylus already live on Samsung devices.
These descriptions are workflow matches, not independent quality scores. Feature availability can change by operating system, app version, language, and subscription. Test the exact device and plan you intend to use.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Start with your device and operating system
Compatibility is the first filter. Goodnotes’ October 1, 2026 guide lists iOS, macOS, Android, Windows, Chromebooks, and web browsers, but says that features vary by platform. A notebook created on one device may not expose every tool on another.
| App | Published platform or ecosystem information | What to verify before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Goodnotes | iOS, macOS, Android, Windows, Chromebooks, and web browsers | Feature parity, sync behavior, AI access, and plan availability on your specific platform |
| OneNote | Presented as cross-platform | The exact desktop, mobile, or web client; Windows-only ink and AI features; Microsoft 365 or Copilot requirements |
| Apple Notes | Positioned within Apple devices | Your iOS, iPadOS, and macOS versions and whether the PDF tools you need are available on each |
| PDF Expert | Apple-platform workflow | iOS or iPadOS version, current app version, and Premium requirement for searchable handwriting |
| Samsung Notes | Galaxy-focused option | Exact Galaxy model, S Pen support, and current export and synchronization options |
Do not infer cross-device equality from an app’s name. A feature matrix is a starting point, not proof that a pen tool, search index, export format, or AI feature behaves identically everywhere.
Handwriting search, conversion, and OCR are different
Searching handwriting you wrote in the app
Handwriting search indexes strokes or a handwriting-recognition layer so you can find a word later without manually opening every page. Goodnotes describes searching handwritten notes, typed text, titles, outlines, and library content. Notability’s pricing page lists handwriting recognition and instant handwriting search in Classic.

Conversion changes ink into editable characters. It is useful for sharing a clean summary, copying a quotation, or moving a handwritten draft into another document. MyScript Notes is included in Goodnotes’ comparison with handwriting-to-text support, and Apple Notes is marked as supporting handwriting-to-text in that same comparison. Treat those as feature claims, not accuracy guarantees: recognition depends on handwriting style, language, pen input, and the selected device.
Searching a PDF that already contains text
A digitally generated PDF usually has an embedded text layer. Goodnotes’ PDF comparison says text search works when that OCR layer already exists. Highlighting or writing on a PDF does not automatically create searchable text for an image-only scan.
OCR for image-only scans
Scanned contracts, photographed worksheets, and older books may contain only page images. Before choosing an app, open one of your actual scans and confirm whether it can create an OCR layer. Annotation support alone does not establish searchable scans. Ask whether OCR is automatic, optional, language-limited, or restricted to a paid tier.
Markup is not the same as editing a PDF
Most note apps let you write, highlight, underline, draw, add comments, or place text boxes over a PDF. That is annotation. Direct editing changes the underlying text, images, or page objects already in the file.

| Task | What it means | Question to test |
|---|---|---|
| Handwriting and highlighting | Visual ink or markup layered over the page | Can the pen, eraser, lasso, and highlighter work naturally on your device? |
| Commenting | Notes attached to or placed beside PDF content | Do comments survive export and remain visible in the recipient’s reader? |
| Direct text editing | Changing existing words or images in the PDF itself | Can the app alter the original object, or only place a new layer above it? |
| Page management | Reordering, inserting, deleting, rotating, or extracting pages | Can you assemble the final document without switching apps? |
Goodnotes is described as supporting PDF annotation and both editable and flattened PDF export. That does not mean it is a full replacement for a dedicated PDF editor. If your work involves correcting source text, redacting content, or rebuilding pages, test those operations separately from pen markup.
Goodnotes: best all-round handwriting-and-PDF workspace
Goodnotes is a reasonable first choice when you want notebooks and PDFs in the same handwriting-first library. Its published feature descriptions include handwriting search, typed-text search, searchable PDF text, scanned-document search, titles and outlines, audio-linked notes, shared-document collaboration, and PDF export.
Where it fits well
- Students who annotate lecture slides, readings, and problem sets beside handwritten notes.
- Professionals who keep project notebooks and mark up reports in one library.
- Readers who need folders, outlines, bookmarks, and whole-library retrieval.
- People who sometimes need audio linked to written notes rather than a separate recorder.
Important qualifications
Goodnotes’ own PDF comparison qualifies PDF text search as dependent on an existing OCR layer. Its platform list is broad, but features and AI access vary by device and subscription. The app’s description of searchable scans should therefore be tested against the scans you actually receive, especially if they are low-resolution or multilingual.
Goodnotes plans and dated prices
The following figures come from Goodnotes’ October 1, 2026 guide and are starting or listed prices, not a guarantee of your local checkout total.
| Plan | Price stated by Goodnotes | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Free plan listed | Limits and included features depend on the current platform and offer |
| Essential | From $11.99 per year | Starting price; region and platform can affect availability |
| Pro | $35.99 per year | Goodnotes’ listed annual price; verify current inclusions |
| Teams | $120 per year | Goodnotes’ listed price; intended for team use |
| Apple-only Special Edition | $35.99 one time | Available only in the stated Apple context |
| AI Pass | $9.99 per month | Goodnotes says full AI access requires the add-on or a qualifying plan |
Goodnotes’ August 26, 2026 comparison reports Pro at $35.99 per year. Because plan names, regional taxes, introductory offers, and platform availability can change, check the purchase screen before relying on a price.
Notability: a note-focused alternative
Notability is a relevant alternative if your priority is writing and reviewing notes rather than building a broad document-management system. Its official pricing page lists handwriting recognition and instant handwriting search in Classic, and describes unlimited note-taking and PDF annotation among business-plan features.
Goodnotes’ August 2026 comparison characterizes Notability as the more note-focused choice and reports Notability Pro at $79.99 per year. That characterization comes from a competitor, so treat it as Goodnotes’ view rather than an independent head-to-head finding.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
MyScript Notes (formerly Nebo): test it for handwriting conversion
MyScript Notes is a candidate for readers who care most about turning pen strokes into typed text. Goodnotes’ October 2026 guide marks handwriting-to-text, handwriting/PDF search, and handwriting on PDFs as supported, while showing limitations for some other capabilities.
Those entries are a feature-level overview published by a competing vendor, not a recognition-accuracy benchmark. Verify the current platform list, supported languages, export formats, and plan limits directly in the app before moving a large archive.
OneNote: cross-platform and Microsoft-oriented
OneNote makes sense when your notebooks already belong in a Microsoft workflow or when you need a free basic starting point across devices. Goodnotes’ description says handwriting conversion and handwriting search are limited, and that PDFs import as static images. It also says many consumer AI and ink features are Windows-only and require a paid Microsoft 365 or Copilot plan.
Check the exact OneNote client and Microsoft subscription before advising a team. A Windows desktop feature should not be assumed to exist in the web or mobile app, and a PDF imported as an image may not provide the text-search behavior you expect.
Recommended Free Tools
Apple Notes: convenient inside an Apple setup
Apple Notes is a practical built-in choice when you already use Apple devices and want to avoid another subscription. Goodnotes’ comparison marks handwriting-to-text and handwriting/PDF search as supported, while marking handwriting on PDFs as limited.
Confirm the operating-system version and the exact PDF workflow. If you need extensive page rearrangement, editable exports, or identical tools on non-Apple devices, compare those requirements before treating Apple Notes as your long-term archive.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
PDF Expert: choose it when PDF work comes first
PDF Expert is aimed at readers whose main job is reviewing PDFs on Apple hardware. Readdle’s help documentation says handwriting recognition requires iOS 27 or iPadOS 27, the latest PDF Expert version, and Premium. It says converting handwriting to typed text is available to all users, while library-wide searchable handwriting requires Premium.
The same documentation states support for searching handwriting in the PDF Expert library and lists 29 supported languages. That is a vendor feature claim, not a performance test. Because the operating-system and app-version requirements are unusually specific, recheck them immediately before deployment.
Samsung Notes and other ecosystem-specific choices
Samsung Notes
Samsung Notes is a free Galaxy-oriented option when your tablet, S Pen, and phone are already in that ecosystem. It is less central to a cross-platform shortlist, so verify the exact model, desktop access, PDF export, and synchronization path you need.
Notion
Notion appears in the 2026 comparison as a typed, database-driven notes tool rather than a handwriting-and-PDF specialist. It fits structured text and databases better than a pen-first notebook workflow. Confirm current handwriting and PDF capabilities on your target device before selecting it for heavy annotation.
Compare apps on the tasks you actually perform
Use this checklist during a free trial. A yes/no feature matrix cannot reveal whether the pen latency, recognition, or export behavior suits your work.
- Capture: Write with your normal speed, pressure, and shorthand. Try the pen, highlighter, lasso, eraser, shapes, and palm rejection.
- Recognition: Search a handwritten word, convert a paragraph to text, and test the languages you use.
- PDFs: Open a text-based PDF and an image-only scan. Search both, annotate both, and test page insertion and reordering.
- Organization: Create folders or notebooks, add an outline and bookmark, then find the page using whole-library search.
- Export: Export once with editable annotations and once flattened. Open both files in another PDF reader to see what remains selectable or editable.
- Audio: If recording matters, check whether audio stays linked to the written page and whether playback survives sharing.
- Sharing: Invite a collaborator, inspect permissions, and verify whether simultaneous edits are visible on every supported client.
- Backup: Identify whether cloud backup is one-way, whether it preserves the native notebook format, and how you would restore a deleted file.
- Paywall: Repeat the tests after the trial or free allowance ends. A feature that works during a trial may require a subscription later.
Export, backup, and retrieval for a long-lived archive
Handwritten notes are useful only if you can find and reuse them years later. Prioritize a library-wide search index, stable folders, outlines, bookmarks, and a backup that is independent of one device.
Goodnotes documents both editable and flattened PDF export choices. Editable annotations preserve more flexibility in a compatible editor; flattened output is simpler to share but merges the appearance into the page. Keep the native notebook format as well as a PDF copy when the app offers both.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Ask three practical questions before importing an archive:
- Can you export an entire notebook without opening every page?
- Does export preserve links, audio associations, outlines, and bookmarks?
- Can another person open the result without buying the same app?
Do not assume cloud synchronization is a complete backup. A sync service can replicate deletions or preserve only the app’s proprietary format. Maintain a periodic export that you can open independently.
Hardware and stylus compatibility
Goodnotes names Apple Pencil support on iPad and S Pen support on Samsung tablets. A compatible active stylus generally provides a better handwriting workflow than a finger or a generic capacitive pen, but the exact tablet-and-stylus pairing matters.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Confirm that the tablet supports the pressure, tilt, hover, and palm-rejection features you expect.
- Check whether the pen is included, requires charging, or is sold separately.
- Test writing near the screen edges and over imported PDF forms.
- Verify that the app recognizes the stylus in the operating system and browser version you plan to use.
The available comparisons do not establish a best stylus model. A broad search such as “stylus for tablet note taking” is safer than assuming every Apple Pencil or S Pen works with every tablet.
How to choose in five minutes
- Identify your primary device. Eliminate apps that do not support it or that hide essential features on that platform.
- Classify your PDFs. If most are image-only scans, make OCR verification a deciding test. If they are digital documents, test text search and annotation export.
- Choose your handwriting goal. Select search, conversion, or simple visual markup according to what you need later.
- Decide whether you need a PDF editor. If changing underlying text or managing pages is routine, do not mistake annotation tools for direct editing.
- Test retrieval and export. Search a real archive, export an annotated file, and open it outside the app.
- Price the complete workflow. Include the plan, AI add-on, required operating system, stylus, and any second device you need.
- Pay only after the trial. Use your own handwriting, scans, and sharing process before committing to a recurring plan or one-time purchase.
What the available comparisons do—and do not—prove
Goodnotes, Notability, and Readdle publish useful product details, but the comparison material is vendor-authored. Goodnotes has a commercial interest in comparisons that include its own app, and Notability and Readdle pages describe their own products rather than validating a rival’s ranking.
No independent benchmark establishes handwriting-recognition accuracy, sync reliability, latency, or performance on very large PDFs here. Prices and platform requirements cited above are dated to 2026 source pages and can change by country. Recheck the checkout screen, operating-system requirement, free limit, scan OCR behavior, and export result before purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a handwriting app search a scanned PDF automatically?
Not necessarily. Searchable text in a PDF requires an OCR layer; a scan that is only an image may need OCR first. Test an actual scan from your workflow rather than assuming that annotation support includes OCR.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is a one-time purchase always cheaper than a subscription?
Not automatically. Compare the one-time price with the years you expect to use the app, then include paid AI features, platform restrictions, updates, and any second-device requirement. Regional checkout prices can differ from published USD figures.
Will my annotations stay editable after I share a PDF?
Only if you export in a format that preserves annotation objects and the recipient’s PDF reader supports them. Flattened export preserves appearance but merges the markup into the page, so test both export modes with the software your recipients use.
Which app should I try first if I am undecided?
Start with Goodnotes if you want the broadest handwriting-and-PDF workflow, or Notability if a note-focused experience and handwriting search are your priority. Use a free tier or trial with your own handwriting and PDFs before paying.
