There is no universal “non-toxic” designation for dishwasher detergent. For a U.S. shopper, the strongest current shortlist is Blueland Dishwasher Detergent Tablets for certification and refill packaging, Green Llama Dishwasher Tabs for EWG-verified ingredient disclosure, and Seventh Generation Free & Clear Dishwasher Detergent Packs for a fragrance-free, EPA Safer Choice-certified premeasured pack. None has an accessible, independent head-to-head test proving it cleans better than the others, so treat these as evidence-led candidates rather than performance winners.
This guide separates what each label, ingredient list, package format, and test actually establishes. Formulas, certifications, packaging, and marketplace listings can change, so check the current container and product page before ordering.
What “non-toxic” means for dishwasher detergent
“Non-toxic” is a useful shopping phrase, but it is not an absolute safety finding. A detergent can contain ingredients screened for lower concern and still irritate eyes, cause harm if swallowed, or present a risk when mishandled. Sensitivity also depends on exposure, concentration, ventilation, and the person using the product.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Look for three separate kinds of evidence:
- Ingredient review: the exact current formula is disclosed and assessed under a defined standard.
- Use and exposure information: directions and warnings explain how to dose, store, and handle the product.
- Cleaning evidence: an independent test identifies the exact product, test conditions, soils, machine settings, and results.
A certification addresses a particular review process; it does not prove that a detergent is harmless in every circumstance or that it will outperform another formula. “Plant-derived,” “mineral-based,” “enzyme-rich,” or “plastic-free” wording is likewise not a substitute for product-specific safety and cleaning evidence.

Shortlist: the three clearest U.S. options
| Product | Format and fragrance | Certification or disclosure | Directions and packaging information | What the evidence does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blueland Dishwasher Detergent Tablets | Fragrance-free tablets; refill system | The manufacturer reports EPA Safer Choice and Cradle to Cradle certifications. EWG’s certification page describes the dishwasher tablet as EWG Verified. | Use one tablet in the detergent compartment. Refills are described as being stored in a reusable tin. | No accessible comparative laboratory score against the other two products. |
| Green Llama Dishwasher Tabs | Tablet; fragrance information is not stated on the cited EWG record | Specific tabs are marked EWG Verified; the record says the formulation was reviewed at the time of verification. | Place one tablet in the dispenser. The record warns users to avoid eye contact, rinse eyes after exposure, and keep the product away from children and pets. | EWG verification is not a guarantee of zero risk or superior cleaning. |
| Seventh Generation Free & Clear Dishwasher Detergent Packs | Fragrance-free premeasured packs, rather than unwrapped tablets | EPA Safer Choice certified, with a public ingredient list and directions. | Put one pack in the main dispenser cup. The manufacturer recommends rinse aid in very hard water. | No independent result directly comparing this pack with the shortlisted tablets. |
The table mixes two tablets with a film-wrapped pack because shoppers often compare these formats in the same aisle. Treat the physical format as a separate decision from ingredient screening. A pack that is premeasured may be convenient, while a refill tablet may fit a different storage and waste preference.
How the certifications should be read
EPA Safer Choice
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed Safer Choice and Design for the Environment Standard from November 2023 describes a scientific review of ingredients for potential human-health and environmental effects, with comparisons among chemicals serving the same function. Its wording says: “When you see the Safer Choice label on a product it means that the Safer Choice scientific review team has evaluated each ingredient for potential human health and environmental effects and that—based on the best available experimental data and EPA predictive models—the product contains only those ingredients that pose the least concern among chemicals in their functional class.”
That quotation describes the proposed 2023 standard; it should not be presented as proof that every current product has identical performance or that the proposal is the final standard in force. Confirm that the label applies to the exact product and current formulation, not merely to the company’s brand family. Seventh Generation’s listing and the Blueland manufacturer both identify their respective products as Safer Choice products, but that designation does not provide a comparative wash score.

EWG Verified
EWG’s product ratings concern known or suspected hazards associated with ingredients. EWG explicitly says its ratings do not account for the level of exposure or individual susceptibility, which are factors in actual health risk. The Green Llama record further says the specific formulation was reviewed and that ingredient concentrations were below its health and safety limits at verification.
Use EWG Verified as evidence about the reviewed formula and the limits used at that time. It is not a promise that a user can never experience irritation, an allergic response, or harm from swallowing the product. Verification also should not be treated as interchangeable with EPA Safer Choice: the organizations use different review systems and scopes.
Product-by-product guide
Blueland Dishwasher Detergent Tablets: certification-led, refill-oriented choice
Blueland’s tablets are fragrance-free and supplied through a tablet-and-refill format. The manufacturer reports EPA Safer Choice and Cradle to Cradle certification, while EWG’s certification page describes the dishwasher tablet as EWG Verified. That combination makes the product a clear candidate if you prioritize third-party screening and want to reduce the need for a new container with each purchase.
The stated use is simple: put one tablet in the dishwasher’s detergent compartment. The manufacturer describes storing refills in a reusable tin. Those are packaging and use claims from the manufacturer, not an independent measurement of waste, life-cycle impact, or cleaning performance. Check that the tin is dry before adding refills, because moisture can affect a tablet before the wash begins.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Blueland also says its tablets are independently tested to perform on dishware, glassware, silver, and porcelain. The cited material does not provide a comparative score, soil list, machine setting, water hardness, or test protocol that would allow a fair ranking against Green Llama or Seventh Generation. Consider the claim supporting evidence that testing occurred, not proof that this is the best-performing tablet.
Green Llama Dishwasher Tabs: the most explicit ingredient-record option
The EWG product record lists sodium carbonate, sodium percarbonate, sodium citrate, sodium metasilicate, polyitaconic acid, citric acid, TAED, sodium lauryl sulfoacetate, amylase, and protease. It marks the specific tabs EWG Verified and states that the formulation was reviewed at the time of verification.

The label directs users to place one tablet in the dispenser. Follow the record’s handling warnings: avoid eye contact, rinse eyes if exposure occurs, and keep the product out of reach of children and pets. Do not infer that a disclosed ingredient list makes a product safe to touch, taste, or inhale. Disclosure helps comparison; it does not remove the need for ordinary detergent precautions.
Green Llama is therefore a strong choice for shoppers who want a named formula and verification record. The available evidence does not include a comparable independent cleaning result for the current U.S. product. If the package, tablet shape, or ingredient list differs from the verified listing, check whether the verification covers that version.
Seventh Generation Free & Clear packs: familiar premeasured format
Seventh Generation’s Free & Clear listing identifies sodium carbonate, sodium citrate, sodium sulfate, sodium percarbonate, surfactants, sodium polyaspartate, polyvinyl alcohol film, and protease and amylase blends. The manufacturer says the packs are fragrance-free and contain no chlorine bleach or phosphates.
Ingredient names can explain why a formula is built for more than one soil type without predicting a final score. The Association of Conscious Consumers describes sodium carbonate and sodium percarbonate as common tablet ingredients, while surfactants and additives support the wash and enzymes can target different soils. Protease is associated with protein soils and amylase with starches, but the presence of an enzyme does not establish how well a particular product performs in your machine.
Use one pack in the dishwasher’s main dispenser cup. In very hard water, the manufacturer recommends rinse aid. Hard-water minerals can leave film or spots, so this instruction addresses a use condition rather than proving a safety or performance advantage.
These are premeasured packs with a film, not bare tablets. Polyvinyl alcohol film is part of the listed formula; do not describe the product as film-free or automatically plastic-free. The public ingredient list and EPA Safer Choice label make it a practical option for readers who prefer a conventional pack format with fragrance omitted.
Format, packaging, and waste claims
“Tablet,” “pack,” and “sheet” are not interchangeable terms. A bare tablet is handled directly and usually goes in the dispenser. A pack has a surrounding film that remains with the dose as directed by its label. A sheet is a separate format tested in some comparison programs but is not one of the three shortlisted U.S. products here.
Blueland’s reusable-tin refill description is a manufacturer packaging claim. It may appeal to shoppers trying to reduce repeated primary containers, but the information cited here does not quantify shipping material, refill weight, or total life-cycle impact. Seventh Generation’s polyvinyl alcohol film is explicitly listed, so a claim that every option in this guide is “plastic-free” would be inaccurate. Confirm current package instructions before cutting, unwrapping, or transferring any dose.
What independent testing can—and cannot—tell you
Which? testing in 2026
Which? reports testing 15 dishwasher detergents in April 2026: 12 tablets and three sheets. Its method included dried tea, spaghetti starch, egg yolk, milk, and grease; residue checks after washing; repeated-wash checks for glass cloudiness; and assessments of water marks, shine, and sustainability based on product chemistry.

The detailed recommendations are member-only, and the sample is UK-oriented. It therefore does not establish a ranking for the U.S. Blueland, Green Llama, or Seventh Generation products in this guide. A test result is transferable only when the exact product, formulation, market, and relevant machine conditions match. Even a strong result in one machine may not predict results with a different cycle, detergent compartment, or water hardness.
Association of Conscious Consumers laboratory report
A separate Association of Conscious Consumers report tested 38 dishwasher tablets and gels in an accredited laboratory and washed 2,660 dishes. The report used a standardized soil, the same 55°C program, and weighted its score as 50% cleanliness, 30% stain-free results, and 20% drying. It explains that common formulas use sodium carbonate and sodium percarbonate, while surfactants and enzymes target different soils; protease works on protein soils and amylase on starches.
Eight of 12 EU Ecolabelled products in that report scored above 90%, and the report says the leading products were broadly similar in efficacy. Those figures describe that report’s test set and market. They cannot be assigned to the three U.S. shortlist products or used to claim that an ecolabel, mineral ingredient, enzyme, or plant-derived ingredient automatically cleans better.
When you read any future comparison, ask whether the test identifies the exact retail formula, gives the test date and country, states water temperature and hardness, describes the soil load, and reports residue, cloudiness, spotting, shine, and drying separately. A single overall number can hide a product’s strengths and weaknesses.
A practical buying framework
1. Verify the exact product
Check the product name, format, size, and current ingredient list. A certification for one tablet or pack does not automatically cover every fragrance variant, size, or reformulation sold under the same brand. Save a photo of the package if you need to compare a later refill with the original.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. Decide how much fragrance information you need
Fragrance-free choices are available in this shortlist. That can matter to people who prefer to avoid added fragrance, but “fragrance-free” is not a medical guarantee and does not predict cleaning strength. Green Llama’s cited record does not state fragrance information, so do not assume it is fragrance-free simply because other products on the list are.
3. Compare the physical format
- Bare tablet: place it in the dispenser; check whether the package is a refill system.
- Film-wrapped pack: keep the pack intact and place it in the main dispenser cup as directed.
- Refill system: assess the manufacturer’s container and refill instructions rather than assuming a waste total.
- Sheet: treat it as a different dose and package format; results for sheets should not be transferred to tablets without evidence.
4. Demand product-specific performance evidence
For a meaningful comparison, look for the exact current product, test date and geography, soil types, dishwasher and water conditions, number of cycles, and accessible results for cleaning, residue, cloudiness, spots, and drying. Without those details, “best-performing” is marketing language rather than a demonstrated result.
5. Match the detergent to your water and machine
Use the appliance manufacturer’s instructions for the dispenser and cycle. Hard water can affect spotting and residue; the Seventh Generation directions specifically recommend rinse aid in very hard water. Do not compensate for poor loading, blocked spray arms, low temperature, or an overfilled dispenser by adding extra detergent unless the product label says to do so.
6. Compare the dose and shopping logistics
Each shortlisted product gives a one-dose direction: one tablet for Blueland, one tablet for Green Llama, and one pack for Seventh Generation. Compare products by labeled doses per package and the current price per dose rather than by container size alone. Prices, subscription terms, shipping charges, and retailer availability are not fixed here, so verify those details at the time of purchase.

Correct use and safe handling
- Read both manuals: follow the dishwasher maker’s dispenser instructions and the detergent label.
- Load for spray coverage: keep the dispenser and spray arms unobstructed; scrape heavy food rather than pre-rinsing every dish.
- Use the labeled dose: one tablet or one pack is the stated dose for each shortlisted product.
- Keep products dry: moisture can damage tablets or packs before use. Close the original container or refill tin.
- Store securely: keep detergent away from children and pets. Green Llama’s record specifically includes this warning.
- Respond to exposure: avoid eye contact; if detergent enters the eyes, rinse as directed on the label. Seek professional poison or medical advice for ingestion or persistent symptoms.
- Do not mix products: use one detergent format and dose at a time unless the appliance and product instructions explicitly say otherwise.
Common mistakes that create disappointing results
- Calling a certification a performance test: Safer Choice and EWG Verified describe review criteria, not a head-to-head cleaning score.
- Mixing formats in the comparison: a tablet, a film-wrapped pack, and a sheet are not interchangeable packaging claims.
- Assuming ingredient origin predicts results: “plant-derived,” “mineral-based,” enzyme-rich, or plastic-free language does not establish superior cleaning.
- Ignoring water hardness: mineral deposits can look like detergent failure; adjust rinse aid and maintenance according to your machine and product instructions.
- Using old label information: formulas and certifications can change. Recheck the current package before buying.
- Overloading the dishwasher: blocked spray paths can leave soil behind regardless of detergent choice.
- Putting a pack in the wrong location: follow the stated main-cup or detergent-compartment direction rather than dropping it loose wherever it fits.

Frequently asked questions
Are any dishwasher tablets completely non-toxic?
No absolute designation establishes that. The useful comparison is whether the exact formula has credible ingredient screening, clear directions and warnings, and transparent evidence about cleaning.
Which of these cleans best?
No accessible, comparable independent test identifies a winner among the current U.S. Blueland, Green Llama, and Seventh Generation products. Brand testing claims and certification status do not supply a head-to-head score.
Is EPA Safer Choice the same as EWG Verified?
No. They are separate review programs with different methods and scopes. Treat each label as evidence about its own process, not as an interchangeable rating.
Are all three options fragrance-free?
Blueland and Seventh Generation are described as fragrance-free. The cited Green Llama record lists ingredients and verification but does not state fragrance information, so check its current package if fragrance matters to you.
Are these tablets plastic-free or zero-waste?
Do not assume that. Blueland describes a reusable-tin refill system, while Seventh Generation lists polyvinyl alcohol film. The cited information does not provide a complete waste or life-cycle calculation for any option.
Can I use one dose in every cycle?
The listed directions specify one Blueland tablet, one Green Llama tablet, or one Seventh Generation pack in the designated dispenser. Follow the current label and appliance manual rather than adding extra detergent for heavily soiled dishes.
What if my dishes come out cloudy or spotted?
Check water hardness, rinse-aid guidance, loading, spray-arm clearance, and the selected cycle. Seventh Generation specifically recommends rinse aid in very hard water. Cloudiness and water marks are performance factors worth tracking across several cycles, not proof by themselves of a hazardous formula.
How should I store dishwasher detergent?
Keep tablets and packs dry and secured away from children and pets. Green Llama’s record specifically warns about access and eye contact. Follow the label’s first-aid directions and obtain professional advice after ingestion or persistent symptoms.
