For a genuinely free Ubuntu game, start with 0 A.D. It is a native Linux real-time strategy game, open source, free to download from its developers, and has no freemium system or in-game advertising. If you want a commercial free-to-play catalog instead, Steam is the documented starting point on Ubuntu; its games may use Proton, and each title must be checked individually. Heroic and Lutris can organize other store libraries, but neither makes paid games free.
Free has three different meanings in Ubuntu gaming:
- Free and open source: the program’s source code is available under a license that permits the freedoms defined by that license. Art and other assets can have separate terms.
- Free of charge: you can download and play without paying, but the software may still be proprietary.
- Free-to-play: a commercial game can be downloaded and played without a subscription or credit card, while optional purchases, account limits or game-specific restrictions may still apply.
Ubuntu’s Community Help Wiki separates these categories and notes that games may come from Ubuntu’s Main or Universe repositories, from third parties, or from commercial stores. Its game lists were last edited in 2021, so use that page for terminology and licensing context rather than as a current recommendation catalog.

This is not a performance ranking. No reproducible hardware tests establish that one title runs faster than another on every Ubuntu system, and driver, GPU, desktop-session and Proton changes can alter results.

0 A.D.: the clearest open-source recommendation
Wildfire Games describes 0 A.D. as a free, open-source real-time strategy game about ancient warfare. Its official site announced Release 28, “Boiorix,” on February 18, 2026. That release is the project’s first without the Alpha label; it improves Linux distribution support and includes an official-release AppImage. The project says Linux downloads are available directly from the developers.
The licensing is deliberately split: the game’s code is GPL v2, while artwork is CC BY-SA 3.0. That means “open source” does not imply that every file has the same license. If you redistribute, modify or package it, read the project’s licensing information for the specific component involved.
0 A.D. also makes an unusually clear monetization promise. In the Release 28 announcement, Wildfire Games says: “No ‘freemium’ model, no in-game advertising, no catch.” You can therefore treat it as a no-cost game rather than a storefront demo with purchase prompts. That statement does not guarantee that every future service or community component will remain unchanged, so use the current official release information when updating an installation.

- Open the official 0 A.D. site and select the current Linux download. Prefer the package format that matches your Ubuntu setup; the Release 28 announcement specifically identifies an official-release AppImage.
- For an AppImage, save the file, open its file properties, enable execution if Ubuntu has not already done so, and launch it. Keep the file in a stable location so desktop shortcuts and updates do not break.
- If you use a Snap or Flatpak build, confirm that it corresponds to the current release. The project notes that Snap and Flatpak maintainers were working toward current releases, so availability can lag the developer’s direct download.
- Start the game once, let it create its configuration files, and check video settings before beginning a long session.
- When a new release appears, compare its release notes with your package source. A distribution repository can lag behind the developer’s download even when both are legitimate.
The official announcement does not promise bug-free play. “First release without the Alpha label” describes the project’s release stage, not a guarantee that every Ubuntu hardware and driver combination will be trouble-free.
What “free-to-play” means on Steam
Steam Support defines free-to-play games as downloadable and playable without a subscription or credit card. Steam Wallet purchases may be available for supported in-game items or content. The same guidance says players are not obligated to buy items to play and progress, while limited-account restrictions and game-specific restrictions can apply.

That definition answers the price question but not the Ubuntu-compatibility question. A free Steam title may have a native Linux build, may run through Valve’s Proton compatibility layer, or may fail to start because of anti-cheat, launcher or graphics dependencies. Read the specific store page and current compatibility information before committing time to a large download.
Questions to answer on a free-to-play store page
- Does the page list a Linux build, or will the game use Proton?
- Are purchases cosmetic, progression-related, required for online access, or entirely optional?
- Does the publisher require an additional account or launcher?
- Are there regional, age, server or limited-account restrictions?
- Does the game support your intended controller, voice chat and multiplayer mode on Ubuntu?
Installing Steam on Ubuntu
Canonical’s Steam documentation, updated May 27, 2026, says the Steam client is available as a snap on systems that support snapd, including Ubuntu. The snap is an installation route, not a compatibility guarantee.
- Install Steam from Ubuntu’s app store by searching for Steam, or install the documented snap from a terminal with
sudo snap install steam. - Launch Steam and sign in. A free-to-play game still follows the account and regional rules shown on its store page.
- Open the game’s store page and check the operating-system icons, system requirements and recent community reports. Do not infer compatibility from the fact that Steam itself launches.
- For a native Linux title, install normally and test it before changing advanced settings.
- For a Windows title, use Steam’s Settings compatibility controls to enable Steam Play/Proton where appropriate. Start with the game’s default recommended tool, then change versions only when a current title-specific report suggests doing so.
- Test the first launch, graphics menu, audio, controller and online login separately. A game can reach its menu while still failing in multiplayer or with a particular input device.
Canonical’s documentation separates guidance for Proton, controllers, dedicated GPUs, Mesa, MangoHud, troubleshooting and game-specific workarounds. Those sections are more useful than a blanket claim that every Steam game works on Ubuntu.
Heroic and Lutris: useful tools, not free-game stores
Heroic Games Launcher
Heroic describes itself as a free, open-source launcher for Epic, GOG and Amazon Prime Games on Linux, Windows and macOS. The project identifies its code as GPLv3 and provides Linux Flatpak and AppImage downloads. It also offers a controller-friendly console mode.
Heroic can show stores, let you obtain games that are free in those stores, and let you buy games through its interface. The launcher remains free; the game license does not change. If a title costs money in the underlying store, installing Heroic does not remove that cost. If a store grants a game temporarily, access can also depend on the store account and its terms.

Lutris
Lutris calls itself an open gaming platform for Linux built with open-source technology. It integrates libraries and launchers including Steam, Epic Games Store, EA App, Ubisoft Connect, GOG and Humble Bundle. Its FAQ is explicit that Lutris does not sell commercial games; it helps install and play titles purchased from game stores.
Use Lutris as a library and installation tool. A Lutris installer or community script can simplify dependencies, but it is not a promise that a game will run on your hardware, that online services will accept Linux clients, or that you own the game. Read the installer notes and keep a record of which store account supplied each title.
Native Linux, Proton and store launchers: choosing the right route

A practical compatibility checklist
- Identify the exact game and edition. Deluxe editions, regional builds and launcher variants can behave differently.
- Check the official store or project page. Confirm whether the download is native Linux, Windows-only, or supplied through a launcher.
- Record your Ubuntu release, GPU and driver. Compatibility reports are meaningful only when the operating environment is comparable.
- Check online-service requirements. Anti-cheat, voice systems and third-party accounts can be the deciding factor even when the game renders correctly.
- Install one title first. This isolates disk, shader-cache and driver issues instead of creating several unknowns at once.
- Test a complete session. Reach a match or campaign, save progress, reconnect to an online service and resume after restarting the client.
- Keep a rollback path. Note the working Proton version or package source before changing it, so you can return to a known configuration.
Common problems and targeted fixes
The game does not appear in Ubuntu’s app store
That does not prove the game is unavailable. The project may publish an AppImage, Flatpak or Snap, or the title may be distributed only through a store client. Use the developer’s current download instructions and verify that a package is built for Linux rather than assuming a Windows archive will run.
Steam opens, but a free game will not launch
Separate client problems from game problems. First launch another known-working title. Then check the game’s Linux icon, Proton reports and recent updates. If you changed Proton versions, restore the version that last worked. A launcher, anti-cheat component or graphics driver can fail before the game displays an error.
The game launches but performance is poor
Check the GPU driver, resolution, rendering backend and background shader compilation. Canonical’s Steam guidance includes dedicated-GPU, Mesa and MangoHud material that can help diagnose a bottleneck. Do not treat one user’s frame rate as a universal benchmark; hardware and settings matter.

A controller is not detected
Try the connection that the device supports, confirm that Ubuntu sees it, and review the game’s controller mapping. Steam and Heroic both document controller-related workflows, but support depends on the device, connection and individual game. A generic USB or Bluetooth PC controller compatible with Linux is optional, not a requirement for these games.
Online multiplayer fails while single-player works
Check account login, server status, anti-cheat support and the game’s current Linux or Proton notes. Rendering successfully does not establish that every online service accepts the same client.

If software freedom matters, inspect the license for code and for assets separately. 0 A.D. documents GPL v2 code and CC BY-SA 3.0 artwork, making it possible to understand what can be modified or redistributed. A game can be free of charge without being open source, and a project can publish source code while using separate restrictions for music, artwork or trademarks.
Ubuntu’s Community Help Wiki describes games in the Main or Universe repositories as conforming to Ubuntu’s free-software philosophy in that category. That classification is useful when evaluating repository software, but the page’s 2021 edit date means package presence and versions must be checked in your current Ubuntu release.

Choosing by player and genre
You want a no-cost game with no commercial pressure
Choose 0 A.D. first. Its current Release 28 announcement explicitly rejects freemium mechanics and in-game advertising, and its Linux download is provided by the developers.

You want a fast competitive shooter
Xonotic’s official homepage describes it as a free, fast arena shooter. Before installing, use the project’s current download page to confirm the Linux package, multiplayer requirements and supported release for your Ubuntu system.
You want the largest possible free-to-play selection
Start with Steam, then evaluate each title independently. Steam’s free-to-play definition covers the absence of a subscription or credit-card requirement, not Linux compatibility or the absence of optional purchases.
You already own games in several stores
Use Heroic or Lutris to consolidate libraries and installation workflows. Keep store ownership, account requirements and game-specific compatibility separate from the launcher choice.

Ubuntu packages, Proton builds, graphics drivers, store catalogs and game prices change. Recheck the official project or store page immediately before downloading. For 0 A.D., compare the installed package with the current Release 28 information and its later release notes. For Steam titles, look for recent reports rather than relying on an old compatibility label. For Heroic and Lutris, verify that the integration and installer still support the store and game you want.
The safest interpretation of “best free games for Ubuntu” is therefore conditional: 0 A.D. is the strongest documented open-source choice here; Xonotic is a promising free arena-shooter candidate whose current Linux details should be confirmed; and Steam, Heroic and Lutris are access tools whose success depends on the individual game, license and Ubuntu setup.
