The best Nintendo Switch Online games depend on what you enjoy, which membership tier you have, and whether you play on Switch or Switch 2. For a first classic, try Super Mario Bros. 3; for an RPG, Golden Sun is a strong Expansion Pack option. These are editorial recommendations, not official rankings or confirmed picks from Game Scoop! 874.
Start by checking your membership and console
Nintendo Switch Online is divided into libraries by membership tier. Standard Nintendo Switch Online includes NES, Super NES, and Game Boy classics. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack adds selected Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy, and SEGA Genesis games. The GameCube – Nintendo Classics library is an Expansion Pack benefit available only on Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo also includes selected downloadable content and Switch 2-specific benefits with Expansion Pack. See Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Online service page for current details.

That means a recommendation is only useful if the game is in your region’s catalog and your membership and hardware support it. In particular, Nintendo 64 games require Expansion Pack, and GameCube classics require both Expansion Pack and Switch 2.

For a classic 2D platformer: Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario Bros. 3 is a strong first choice if you want a focused platforming game with imaginative levels and power-ups. GameSpot singles it out as the one NES collection game to play if choosing only one, while noting its lasting influence on the series. It is in the NES library, included with standard membership.
For a Super Nintendo platformer: Super Mario World
Super Mario World is a good next stop if you want 2D platforming from the Super NES era. Gaming.net highlights its platforming and technical presentation. It belongs to the Super NES library, available with standard membership.

For a 3D platforming landmark: Super Mario 64
Super Mario 64 is worth considering if you are interested in the transition to 3D platforming. Gaming.net includes it among its recommendations and discusses its significance for 3D Mario. Its camera and movement may feel less precise than in newer games; approach it as a landmark from its era rather than expecting contemporary controls. It is a Nintendo 64 game, so it requires Expansion Pack.

How to choose a game that suits your plans
- For a quick starting point: Begin with Super Mario Bros. 3 if you want an accessible entry into the NES library.
- For older 2D platforming: Try Super Mario World for a Super NES-era example.
- For historical 3D design: Choose Super Mario 64 if you are comfortable with period controls and have Expansion Pack.
- For a longer RPG: Consider Golden Sun if you have Expansion Pack and want a different genre.
- For multiplayer: Check whether the original game supported multiplayer. Nintendo says eligible classic games can use those original multiplayer features online, but the collections support play with friends rather than random matchmaking.
Membership, offline play, and online features
An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to access the classic game libraries. You can play offline, but Nintendo Support says the system must verify membership online at least once every seven days. Nintendo also says online play is available for games that had multiplayer features originally; it is not a general matchmaking service for the classic collections.
Game-specific convenience features, such as save or restore options, can vary. Check the information for the individual collection and game rather than assuming every title works the same way.
Rank #4
- Journey through space in two Super Mario adventures, now improved for the Nintendo Switch system!
- Travel the stars with enhanced resolution, improved UI, and additional content
- Learn more about the Lumas from additional Storybook chapters, groove to a bit of additional music

- Join Rosalina and the Lumas to restore the Comet Observatory and rescue Princess Peach in Super Mario Galaxy.
Catalog availability changes over time
Nintendo says its collections will continue to grow but has no fixed schedule for new releases. Its support page states: “There is no set schedule for new releases, but each collection will continue to grow.” Check Nintendo’s current classic-games catalog before choosing a game, especially if you are looking for a specific title or region.
Catalogs differ by region, and titles can be added over time. A September 2026 Nintendo Life guide reported 210 games for the standard tier and 348 for Expansion Pack, or 359 when Switch 2-exclusive GameCube titles were included. Those are Nintendo Life inventory counts, not figures published by Nintendo; they can change and exclude some Japan-only releases and special versions. Check Nintendo’s catalog for the current selection where you live.
