Start with the original Game Boy Advance relationship: use the Switch D-pad for movement, B for the GBA B action, A for the GBA A action, and L/R for the shoulder functions. This keeps on-screen prompts understandable while preserving the familiar A/B arrangement. Change only the buttons that cause a real comfort or accessibility problem, and save a separate profile for that game or play style.

The best default mapping

For most games in the Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics library, the most dependable starting point is a direct label-for-label layout:

Switch control GBA function Why use it
D-pad Directional movement Matches the original handheld’s four-way control and gives precise diagonals where a game supports them.
B GBA B action Keeps the game’s B prompts and muscle memory aligned.
A GBA A action Preserves the original A prompt and the usual confirm/action role.
L GBA L Retains shoulder shortcuts, aiming, cycling and other title-specific functions.
R GBA R Retains the second shoulder function without creating a new prompt mismatch.
+ and − Pause, suspend or system functions These controls follow the application and Switch interface rather than the original GBA button labels.

Use this arrangement first when the game’s on-screen instructions already feel natural. It minimizes relearning: a prompt for A still means the right face button, a prompt for B still means the lower face button, and L/R remain on the shoulders. Nintendo’s official control guidance lets you view how the original buttons map to the current controller and explains how to change the mapping through Switch system settings. For the GBA library, press ZL and ZR to open the relevant controls or user-guide flow. See Nintendo’s GBA Nintendo Classics support article for that control/help path.

Choose a profile for the way you play

There is no single remap that is objectively best for every GBA title. A platformer, a menu-heavy role-playing game and a one-handed setup place different demands on the same buttons. Treat the default mapping as a baseline, then adjust one relationship at a time so you can tell whether the change helped.

Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
  • Take your game sessions up a notch with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller

Default profile: preserve the GBA layout

  • Keep movement on the D-pad.
  • Keep B assigned to the GBA B action and A assigned to the GBA A action.
  • Keep L and R on the corresponding shoulder buttons.
  • Leave + and − to the pause, suspend and system functions supplied by the application.

This is the best first choice for adventure, puzzle, strategy and role-playing games whose prompts you want to follow literally. It also makes it easier to switch between different games without rebuilding your muscle memory.

Platformer and action profile

Retain the D-pad for movement because accurate horizontal, vertical and diagonal input matters more than theoretical button symmetry. If repeated jumps, attacks or item uses feel awkward on your controller, test an A/B swap rather than remapping every control. Move only the frequently repeated action, then play a short section before deciding whether the new reach is actually easier.

Leave L and R on the shoulders unless one shoulder action is used constantly and your grip cannot reach it comfortably. Moving a frequently used shoulder action can help a particular grip, but it also means the new location no longer matches the game’s printed or on-screen L/R instruction. Change it only when the reach benefit outweighs that prompt mismatch.

RPG and menu-heavy profile

Preserve A as confirm and B as cancel whenever the title uses that convention. Consistent confirm/cancel behavior is usually more valuable than making the face buttons look symmetrical across games. Keep L and R available for party cycling, inventory pages, map shortcuts or other menu commands, and make sure your fingers can reach both shoulders without shifting the controller.

If a game uses a shoulder button only occasionally, leave it in its original position. Familiar prompts reduce mistakes when you are moving quickly through a menu or responding to a battle command.

One-handed and accessibility profile

Use the Switch mapping screen to put the most frequently used action on the easiest reachable button. You can disable a supported input if accidental presses are a problem, but keep a clear route back to the standard profile. A practical accessibility setup often changes fewer controls than expected: move one high-frequency action, leave the rest recognizable, and test menus as well as gameplay before saving it.

How to remap a Switch controller

Nintendo stores custom button configurations on the Switch system. The procedure applies to Joy-Con (L), Joy-Con (R), the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller and Nintendo Switch Lite controls. Most buttons can be configured, but Power, Volume, Home and Sync are excluded.

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Select Controllers and Sensors.
  3. Select Change Button Mapping.
  4. Select the controller shown on the left, then choose Change.
  5. Select the button you want to alter and assign its new function.
  6. Select Back, then select Done to confirm.

Those labels follow Nintendo’s published instructions; the complete procedure is available in Nintendo’s button-mapping support article. The mapping is a system-level configuration, not a setting limited to one GBA title. Before launching another game, check whether the custom profile is still active and restore your normal arrangement when you finish.

Make a change without losing the original layout

  • Write down the default A, B, L and R relationships before changing anything.
  • Change one button or one pair, such as A and B, rather than several inputs at once.
  • Test the new arrangement in ordinary movement, a menu and a high-frequency action.
  • If the result is worse, return to Change Button Mapping and restore the original assignment before trying a different experiment.

This approach separates a genuine reach problem from the temporary awkwardness that comes from learning any new layout.

Access the GBA controls and user guide in the app

When you are unsure which original button a prompt refers to, use the GBA Nintendo Classics control/help flow rather than guessing. Nintendo says to press ZL and ZR for the relevant controls or user-guide flow in the GBA library. The screen shows how the original controller buttons correspond to the current Switch controller, which is useful after a remap or when moving between controller types.

Check the guide before changing a button for a title-specific reason. A shoulder input may be a rarely used shortcut in one game but a core action in another; the guide helps you identify the original role before deciding whether moving it is worth the prompt inconsistency.

Controller choice: Joy-Con, Pro Controller or Switch Lite

The best physical controller depends on where you play and how much space your hands need. Nintendo’s documentation establishes that the listed devices support button remapping; it does not establish a universal comfort ranking. The following comparison is therefore a practical fit guide, not a laboratory performance claim.

Controller Best use Strength Trade-off
Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Docked or tabletop play Full-size grip, conventional controls and official remapping support Separate purchase; less convenient for handheld play
Joy-Con pair Travel, multiplayer or flexible setups Official remapping support and easy separation Smaller controls and less traditional D-pad feel
Nintendo Switch Lite controls Handheld-only play Integrated, always-available controls No detachable controller choice

When a Pro Controller makes sense

Choose the Pro Controller when you mainly play docked or on a tabletop and prefer a full-size grip. Its conventional control layout can make long sessions and shoulder access feel less cramped, while Nintendo’s remapping support lets you apply the same A/B or accessibility experiments described above. It is an optional hardware choice, not a requirement for the GBA library.

When a Joy-Con pair makes sense

Use a Joy-Con pair when portability, separation or local multiplayer matters. The pair supports Nintendo’s remapping feature, so you can test the default GBA layout and genre-specific profiles without changing the game’s own prompts. The smaller controls may require more deliberate D-pad and shoulder testing, especially in platformers.

When Switch Lite controls make sense

Switch Lite is suited to handheld-only play because its controls are integrated and always available. You cannot detach the controller and choose a different grip, so the system mapping screen and a conservative one-button change are particularly useful if a reach issue appears.

Five checks before you settle on a layout

  1. D-pad comfort: Play a section that requires steady movement and diagonals. A layout that looks right on paper is not useful if your thumb repeatedly slips or requires a grip shift.
  2. A/B reach: Try the game’s most frequent jump, attack, interact or confirm action. If one face button is difficult to reach repeatedly, test an A/B swap and compare it with the original arrangement.
  3. Shoulder access: Press L and R while maintaining your normal grip. If reaching a shoulder changes your movement control, consider whether a remap improves access enough to justify a changed prompt.
  4. Prompt consistency: Follow an on-screen A, B, L or R instruction after the remap. If you must translate every prompt mentally, the change may cost more than it saves.
  5. Context switching: Decide whether you will remember to restore the normal system profile when you return to other games. A custom mapping that remains active system-wide can make unrelated games feel incorrectly configured.

Common problems and practical fixes

The buttons feel wrong even though the labels match

Give the default layout a short, controlled test instead of changing several buttons immediately. Familiarity with a different controller can make the first minutes feel unusual. If the same action remains difficult after testing, change only that action and retest movement, menus and the repeated action.

A/B swapping makes prompts confusing

Restore A as A and B as B when a game displays those labels frequently. An A/B swap can improve reach for a particular action, but it requires you to reinterpret every matching prompt. It is most defensible when the physical reach problem is persistent and the game gives few button instructions.

L or R is hard to reach

First adjust your grip without changing the assignment. If that does not solve the problem, move only the shoulder action you use most often and note the new location. Keep the other shoulder function unchanged so at least part of the original relationship remains recognizable.

Another game suddenly has the wrong controls

Because custom configurations are saved on the Switch system, a GBA remap can affect later play. Open System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Change Button Mapping, select the controller, choose Change, and restore the standard assignments. Check the active profile whenever you move from GBA Nintendo Classics to another game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot find the remapping option

Confirm that you are using a supported device: Joy-Con (L), Joy-Con (R), Nintendo Switch Pro Controller or Nintendo Switch Lite controls. The Power, Volume, Home and Sync buttons cannot be reassigned, so they will not accept a new function in the mapping screen.

You cannot open the GBA library

Nintendo requires an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership to access the Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics library. Membership is an access requirement for the library; it is separate from the controller-mapping procedure. See Nintendo’s library support information for the stated requirement.

A repeatable setup for each GBA game

  1. Start the game with the label-preserving layout: D-pad for movement, B for B, A for A, L for L and R for R.
  2. Open the game’s control/help flow with ZL and ZR if you need to verify an original function.
  3. Play a representative sequence containing movement, the most common action, a menu and any shoulder command.
  4. Identify the single input that causes the greatest reach, fatigue or accidental-press problem.
  5. Remap only that input through System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Change Button Mapping.
  6. Test the same sequence again, including at least one on-screen prompt.
  7. Keep the change only if it improves physical access without making essential prompts unusable; otherwise restore the original layout.
  8. Restore the standard system profile before starting a different game that depends on normal Switch controls.

This process gives you a consistent baseline while leaving room for genuine accessibility needs and controller-specific comfort differences.

Fine-tuning without creating new problems

Think of a remap as a targeted adjustment, not a complete redesign. The GBA has only a few action inputs, so each change affects a large share of the game. If you swap A and B, play long enough to test both action timing and menu navigation; a button that feels faster for jumping may be slower for confirming dialogue. If you move L or R, test simultaneous D-pad movement because some games expect you to hold a direction while pressing a shoulder button.

Keep a written note or phone photo of your preferred assignments. This is especially useful when you use different controllers: the same logical GBA function may be on a different physical button after switching from a Pro Controller to separated Joy-Con. Review the mapping before a multiplayer session, too, because a system-level change can surprise another player using that controller.

Do not treat + and − as substitutes for A, B, L or R unless the application specifically exposes that option. They are tied to pause, suspend and system functions in the Switch experience, and changing core action buttons is more likely to create an awkward navigation path than to improve play. Likewise, remapping an excluded Power, Volume, Home or Sync button is not a troubleshooting route; Nintendo does not offer those assignments.

Cost and membership considerations

The GBA Nintendo Classics library requires an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. That subscription requirement is separate from the controller choice: the included Switch controls work for access, and a Pro Controller is an optional purchase for docked or tabletop comfort. Joy-Con and Switch Lite users do not need additional hardware merely to use the default mapping or Nintendo’s remapping screen.

If you are considering a Pro Controller, compare the current Nintendo or retailer listing before buying because price, stock and bundle terms can change. The practical reason to choose it is its full-size grip and conventional control spacing, not a published performance advantage. For occasional GBA sessions, use the controller you already own and spend time testing the D-pad, face-button reach and shoulder access first.

Quick decision guide

  • Want the closest match to the handheld? Use D-pad for movement, B for B, A for A, and matching L/R shoulders.
  • Struggle with repeated jumps or attacks? Test only an A/B swap, then verify prompts and menus.
  • Play mostly RPGs? Keep A confirm, B cancel, and both shoulder shortcuts available.
  • Need one-handed access? Move the highest-frequency action to the easiest button and disable an unused input if accidental presses persist.
  • Play docked or tabletop? A Pro Controller offers the roomiest conventional grip; it is optional.
  • Switch between games often? Restore the standard system mapping after each custom session.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best Switch controller settings for GBA games?

Start with D-pad for movement, B for the GBA B action, A for the GBA A action, and L/R on the matching shoulders. This preserves original prompts and muscle memory; change only a button that causes a persistent reach or accessibility problem.

How do I remap A and B for Game Boy Advance on Switch?

Open System Settings, choose Controllers and Sensors, then Change Button Mapping. Select the controller, choose Change, assign the new functions, and select Back followed by Done. Test the swap in gameplay and menus, and restore it when finished if other games use the normal Switch layout.

Should I use Joy-Con or a Pro Controller for GBA games?

Use a Pro Controller for docked or tabletop play if you prefer a full-size grip. Use Joy-Con for travel, separation or multiplayer. Both support Nintendo’s remapping feature; the choice is about grip and D-pad comfort rather than a guaranteed performance difference.

Can I make GBA controls feel like the original handheld?

Yes. Keep movement on the D-pad, map B to B and A to A, and leave L and R on the corresponding shoulders. The GBA control/help flow, opened with ZL and ZR, shows the original relationships.

How do I change controls in the GBA Nintendo Classics app?

Nintendo directs you to the Switch system mapping screen: System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Change Button Mapping. In the GBA app, press ZL and ZR to open the relevant controls or user-guide flow.

Does remapping apply only to one GBA game?

No. Custom configurations are saved on the Switch system for the supported controller, so another game can inherit the altered assignments. Restore the standard profile when you leave the GBA session.

Which Switch buttons cannot be remapped?

Nintendo excludes Power, Volume, Home and Sync. Most other controls on supported Joy-Con, Pro Controller and Switch Lite controls can be configured or, where supported, disabled.

Do I need Nintendo Switch Online to play the GBA library?

Nintendo requires an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership to access the Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics library. That access requirement is separate from controller remapping.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use the label-preserving GBA layout first: D-pad for movement, B for B, A for A, and matching L/R shoulders. Test one targeted change only when reach or accessibility demands it, verify the result in gameplay and menus, and restore the system mapping before returning to other Switch games.
