Choose Splatoon 3 if you want colorful third-person shooting, coordinated teams and a permanent wave-based co-op mode. Choose Borderlands Legendary Collection if you want conventional first-person gunplay, campaign co-op and long-term loot progression. Neither is an exact replacement for Hypercharge: Unboxed: Hypercharge uniquely combines first- and third-person views, split-screen and online co-op, and toy-themed wave defense.
The right alternative depends on which part of Hypercharge matters most to your group: same-console play, horde waves, a campaign, or a traditional FPS feel.
Best alternatives at a glance
| Game | Perspective and feel | Co-op structure | Local setup | Important requirements | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hypercharge: Unboxed | First- and third-person shooting with toy-defense presentation | Local or online co-op for up to four players, built around wave-based tower defense | Split-screen/local co-op is explicitly supported | Check the current Nintendo listing for the edition and online requirements in your region | Players who want the closest overall structure |
| Splatoon 3 | Colorful third-person ink shooting | Salmon Run has groups of four defeat waves of Salmonids and collect Golden Eggs; the wider game also has four-on-four battles | Nintendo Support documents one Nintendo Switch-family console and one copy per player for multiplayer | Nintendo Switch Online is required for relevant online play | Teams that want a lively horde mode and coordinated objectives |
| Borderlands Legendary Collection | Conventional first-person shooter-looter action | Campaign co-op with loot and character progression | Exact local behavior is not stated in Nintendo’s product information; verify the edition and region before buying for couch play | At least a 49 GB download; a microSD card may be needed. Nintendo Switch Online applies to the collection’s Save Data Cloud and online features where specified | Groups that prefer a story campaign, guns and loot |
What Hypercharge: Unboxed does that alternatives do not
Nintendo’s official eShop description calls Hypercharge a “Cooperative First and Third-Person Shooter including Multiplayer (Split-screen/Online) with Wave based Tower Defense mechanics.” It also says players can “Squad up with 3 other players in Online / Local Co-op and save the HYPER-CORE from total annihilation.” Those details define the comparison.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Two viewpoints: players can use first-person or third-person shooting.
- Same-console and online play: the listing explicitly includes split-screen/local co-op as well as online co-op.
- Wave defense: the team protects an objective through successive attacks instead of only moving from one campaign checkpoint to another.
- Toy-scale presentation: the battlefield is built around the fantasy of defending a vulnerable core in a miniature world.
That combination means the alternatives involve a deliberate trade-off. Splatoon 3 preserves colorful team shooting and a recurring horde mode, but its documented multiplayer setup is multi-console rather than same-console couch co-op. Borderlands preserves the first-person shooter identity and adds a full campaign-and-loot loop, but its structure is not the same as defending a core through tower-defense waves.
Splatoon 3: the best horde-mode alternative
What you are getting
Nintendo describes Splatoon 3 as a colorful shooter built around four-on-four ink-slinging battles. Its co-op option, Salmon Run, changes the objective from competing against another team to working together against invading Salmonids.
Nintendo’s launch news says Salmon Run is available 24/7 and has a group of four players defeat waves of Salmonids while collecting Golden Eggs. That makes it the clearest alternative if your favorite part of Hypercharge is reading enemy waves, dividing jobs and protecting the team’s run from collapse.

Why it fits a Hypercharge player
- Wave pressure: Salmonids arrive in waves, so the team must react together rather than rely on one player winning a duel.
- Shared objectives: collecting Golden Eggs gives the group a task beyond simply eliminating enemies.
- Team coordination: positioning, covering teammates and dealing with threats quickly matter more than individual aim alone.
- Distinctive presentation: the colorful ink aesthetic provides the same kind of approachable, non-military tone that makes Hypercharge stand out.
Splatoon 3 is still a third-person ink shooter, not a first-person toy-defense game. The weapons, movement, objectives and match rhythm are its own design. Think of it as a team-based horde substitute, not a mechanical remake.
The multiplayer limitation to check first
Nintendo Support says each player needs their own Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch and a copy of Splatoon 3 for multiplayer. Do not plan a four-player Salmon Run session around one console and one game card. The documented arrangement is one Switch-family system and one copy per player.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Nintendo also flags Nintendo Switch Online requirements for relevant online play. Before scheduling a session, confirm that every participant has the required membership and that the game is updated on each console. If your group specifically wants split-screen on one television, Splatoon 3 should not be presented as a confirmed replacement for Hypercharge’s local mode.
When Splatoon 3 is the better choice
Pick Splatoon 3 when the group values short, repeatable team sessions, colorful presentation and a horde mode that remains available rather than a linear campaign. It is especially suitable when every player already has access to a Switch-family console and a copy.

Borderlands Legendary Collection: the best campaign-and-loot alternative
What the collection includes
Nintendo positions Borderlands Legendary Collection around “three times the mayhem, three times the loot, and three times the action.” The package includes Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition, Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel.
Nintendo describes Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition as a “co-op shooter-looter.” That label explains the fundamental difference from Hypercharge: instead of replaying a defensive objective as the central loop, your group advances through campaign content, fights through encounters and builds characters by acquiring equipment.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Why it fits a Hypercharge player
- First-person gunplay: Borderlands is the closest of these alternatives to a conventional FPS viewpoint and handling.
- Campaign structure: the collection gives a group a longer progression path rather than only standalone wave sessions.
- Loot progression: finding and replacing gear provides a reason to keep developing a character across the campaign.
- Multiple included games: three Borderlands titles offer a substantial amount of campaign content in one collection.
The trade-off is equally important. Borderlands is not presented as a toy-themed tower-defense shooter, and Nintendo’s product information does not establish that its local multiplayer setup matches Hypercharge’s explicit split-screen arrangement.
Storage and online caveats
Nintendo’s listing requires a download of at least 49 GB. That is a product requirement, not an independent performance test. Depending on the free space on your Switch, a microSD card may be needed before installation can finish.
Nintendo Switch Online is required for the collection’s Save Data Cloud and for online features where specified. Check the exact edition and the Nintendo eShop listing for your region before purchase, especially if your group is buying a physical copy and expects every included title or feature to behave identically.
When Borderlands is the better choice
Choose Borderlands Legendary Collection when your group wants a traditional FPS, a campaign to work through together and equipment-driven progression. It is the stronger recommendation for players who describe Hypercharge primarily as “a co-op shooter” and are less concerned about the wave-defense and same-screen elements.
Do not choose it solely because you need confirmed split-screen. The available Nintendo product information does not establish the exact local behavior for every edition and region, so verify that detail before buying for couch play.

Hypercharge versus the alternatives
| Reader priority | Best fit | Reason | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| One console, several local players | Hypercharge: Unboxed | Its official listing explicitly supports split-screen/local co-op | You retain the original toy-defense structure rather than moving to a different game |
| Recurring co-op waves | Splatoon 3 | Salmon Run is available 24/7 and has four-player Salmonid waves with Golden Eggs | Players need a Switch-family console and copy each; it is third-person ink shooting |
| Conventional FPS shooting | Borderlands Legendary Collection | It is a first-person shooter-looter collection with campaign co-op | The central loop is campaign progression and loot, not tower defense |
| Colorful, accessible team action | Splatoon 3 | Ink combat and objective-based team play make it a distinctive, non-military alternative | Its multiplayer arrangement is multi-console according to Nintendo Support |
| Long campaign and gear chase | Borderlands Legendary Collection | Three included games and shooter-looter progression provide a campaign route | Plan for at least 49 GB of downloads and verify online/local details |
| Closest overall structure | Hypercharge: Unboxed | It is the only option here documented with first- and third-person play, split-screen/online co-op and wave-based tower defense together | You are not switching games; you are keeping the feature combination you originally wanted |
How to choose in five questions
- Will everyone play on one television? If yes, Hypercharge is the only option in this comparison with explicit split-screen/local support. Do not assume Splatoon 3 or a particular Borderlands edition provides the same setup.
- Are waves more important than a story? Pick Splatoon 3 for Salmon Run’s recurring Salmonid waves, or stay with Hypercharge for tower-defense waves around the HYPER-CORE.
- Does the group want a conventional FPS? Borderlands is the natural fit because Nintendo presents it as a co-op shooter-looter and the collection uses a first-person format.
- Does everyone own a Switch-family system? Splatoon 3’s documented multiplayer requirement makes this a deciding factor. One copy and one console for the whole group is not the supported assumption.
- Is storage limited? Check available space before choosing Borderlands. The required download is at least 49 GB, and a microSD card may be necessary.
Multiplayer preparation checklist
For Hypercharge: Unboxed
- Confirm that the edition you own is the Nintendo Switch version.
- For local play, use the game’s documented split-screen/local co-op support and connect the controllers your group will use.
- For online play, make sure each participant has the required Nintendo account and service access for the session.
- Remember that the listed group size is the host plus three other players.
For Splatoon 3
- Provide one Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch for every player.
- Provide one copy of Splatoon 3 for every player, as required by Nintendo Support’s multiplayer guidance.
- Confirm Nintendo Switch Online access for the online features your group intends to use.
- Enter Salmon Run when the group is ready to coordinate around waves, Salmonids and Golden Eggs.
For Borderlands Legendary Collection
- Check free storage first; Nintendo lists a download of at least 49 GB.
- Have a microSD card ready if the console cannot accommodate that download.
- Verify the exact edition and region before promising local multiplayer to a group.
- Confirm Nintendo Switch Online requirements for online features and Save Data Cloud.
- Decide which of the three included games the group will start with so everyone is prepared for the same campaign.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling Splatoon 3 couch co-op
Salmon Run is a four-player co-op mode, but Nintendo’s support guidance specifies a console and copy for each player. Describe it as multi-console co-op unless Nintendo’s current documentation for your exact setup says otherwise.
Assuming every Borderlands feature is on the cartridge
The collection’s at-least-49-GB download requirement means storage planning is part of the purchase decision. Check free space and download expectations before starting installation.
Expecting a campaign from a wave-defense game
Hypercharge’s core appeal is defending an objective through waves. Splatoon 3 provides a horde alternative, while Borderlands provides campaigns and loot. Decide which loop your group actually wants instead of treating all three as interchangeable FPS games.
Promising online play without checking Nintendo Switch Online
Nintendo flags online-service requirements for Splatoon 3 and Borderlands features. Confirm membership requirements for every participant and for the exact feature being used.
Recommendations by player type
For a family or room sharing one Switch
Stay with Hypercharge if local split-screen is non-negotiable. Its official listing directly supports that arrangement, while Splatoon 3’s documented multiplayer setup requires separate systems and copies.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
For four friends with separate consoles
Splatoon 3 becomes a strong choice when everyone can meet its hardware, copy and online-service requirements. Salmon Run supplies a clear cooperative objective without requiring the group to commit to a long campaign.
For FPS fans who want progression
Choose Borderlands Legendary Collection. Its three-game package, first-person shooting and shooter-looter structure answer the conventional FPS and gear-progression request better than Splatoon 3.
For players who specifically want toy-themed defense
Keep Hypercharge. Neither alternative combines its miniature presentation, first- and third-person options, explicit split-screen support and HYPER-CORE wave defense in the same documented package.
Final recommendation
Splatoon 3 is the best Nintendo Switch alternative when “co-op shooter” means coordinated teams and repeatable waves. Borderlands Legendary Collection is better when it means first-person campaign shooting and loot. Hypercharge: Unboxed remains the closest match for a group that needs split-screen or wants wave-based tower defense around a shared objective.
Make the decision around your group’s actual setup before comparing weapon feel: one console favors Hypercharge, separate consoles favor Splatoon 3, and a campaign-and-loot priority favors Borderlands. Check Nintendo Switch Online, regional edition details and storage requirements before purchasing.
