For Nintendo Switch Sports Tennis, you need detached Joy-Con controllers and a wrist strap on every controller you hold. A single Joy-Con is enough for solo play; paired or additional Joy-Con controllers are useful for local multiplayer or replacing a damaged controller. Do not buy a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller for this game: Nintendo lists it as incompatible. Do not buy the Leg Strap specifically for Tennis; Nintendo associates that accessory with Soccer play and other supported software.

What Tennis actually requires

Tennis in Nintendo Switch Sports is a Joy-Con motion-control sport. The controller must be detached from the console so the game can read your swing movements. Nintendo’s Switch Sports FAQ documents support for paired Joy-Con controllers and single Joy-Con controllers, with Joy-Con-plus-Leg-Strap configurations applying to particular sports rather than to every event. Nintendo also states that Switch Sports does not support Handheld Mode.

  • Solo Tennis: one detached Joy-Con is the practical minimum.
  • Local multiplayer: use the number of supported Joy-Con controllers required by the players and mode; an additional pair is the straightforward upgrade when another player needs a controller.
  • Every detached controller: attach a wrist strap before play. Nintendo’s strap instructions identify the original accessory as model HAC-014 and say to attach Joy-Con strap accessories whenever Joy-Con are used as detached wireless controllers.
  • Pro Controller: not compatible with Nintendo Switch Sports, according to Nintendo’s official FAQ.
  • Handheld play: not supported for Switch Sports, so holding the console in handheld mode is not a substitute for detached Joy-Con motion control.

Accessory recommendations at a glance

Accessory Is it needed for Tennis? Best reason to buy or keep it Important limitation
Nintendo Joy-Con wrist strap, model HAC-014, or a compatible replacement Yes, for each detached Joy-Con you use Secures the controller to your wrist during motion play and follows Nintendo’s Tennis safety guidance It is a safety accessory, not a way to add new Tennis controls
Standard Joy-Con controllers Yes, one or more depending on players and mode Solo play, local multiplayer, or replacement of a lost, damaged, or unreliable controller Each additional player needs a supported Joy-Con setup; a Pro Controller cannot replace one
Nintendo Switch Sports physical game Only if you do not already own the game Provides the game through a physical purchase path for new players Any included Leg Strap is for supported Soccer play, not a Tennis requirement
Leg Strap No Useful for supported Soccer play or other compatible software such as Ring Fit Adventure It does not improve the Tennis control scheme; the Joy-Con is sold separately
Nintendo Switch Pro Controller No Not a Tennis purchase Nintendo lists it as incompatible with Switch Sports

1. Buy wrist straps before buying novelty Tennis hardware

The wrist strap is the one accessory Nintendo directly emphasizes for Tennis safety. Nintendo’s official Switch Sports site warns: "Be aware of your surroundings. Wear wrist straps and allow adequate room around you during game play." The strap keeps a detached Joy-Con attached to your wrist if your grip loosens during a swing. It also reduces the chance of the controller being thrown across the room or striking nearby furniture.

Use one strap per detached Joy-Con

Attach a strap to every controller that will be held. If two players are playing and each has a Joy-Con, use two straps. If a multiplayer setup uses more controllers, each detached controller needs its own strap rather than having players share one between turns.

Original HAC-014 straps and replacements

Nintendo identifies its Joy-Con strap accessory as model HAC-014. If you still have the straps supplied with your controllers, they are the simplest choice. A compatible replacement can make sense when an original strap is missing or damaged, but check that it is made for the Joy-Con rail and that the locking mechanism can be secured before play. The important requirement is a correctly attached strap, not a decorative racket-shaped shell or a different grip style.

Fit and lock the strap before launching a match

  1. Detach the Joy-Con from the console so it will be used as a wireless controller.
  2. Slide the strap accessory onto the Joy-Con’s rail in the correct orientation.
  3. Lock the strap in place using its slider or lock mechanism.
  4. Place the wrist loop around the player’s wrist and adjust it so it is snug without being painful.
  5. Make a few gentle practice movements and confirm that the strap remains attached before starting a full-speed rally.

Do not rely on a strap that is only partly slid onto the rail or on a loose loop around the hand. If the strap, rail, or lock is damaged, replace it before playing.

2. Choose the right number of Joy-Con controllers

Most Tennis accessory decisions are really controller-count decisions. The game supports single Joy-Con controllers as well as paired Joy-Con controllers, so the right purchase depends on who is playing and whether you already own working controllers.

Your situation Recommended controller setup What to purchase
One person playing Tennis One detached, working Joy-Con with a wrist strap Nothing if you already have a suitable Joy-Con and strap; otherwise buy or replace one Joy-Con and one strap
Two people playing locally A supported Joy-Con for each player, with a strap on each An extra standard Joy-Con or pair if your current set does not provide enough controllers
A controller has been lost or damaged Replace the missing or unreliable standard Joy-Con One replacement Joy-Con plus a wrist strap if the replacement does not include one
You want to keep a full set ready for several players Additional standard Joy-Con controllers, each used with its own strap Extra Joy-Con and enough straps for the complete group

Why standard Joy-Con are the sensible multiplayer upgrade

Extra standard Joy-Con controllers expand the number of people who can take part in local play while preserving the motion-control method Tennis expects. They also provide a direct replacement path when an existing controller has unreliable motion input, is missing, or has been damaged. Buy only the number needed for your planned player count; Tennis does not become more accurate because you own a larger collection of controllers.

Do you need a tennis-racket accessory?

No. Nintendo’s documented Tennis setup is based on Joy-Con motion controls and wrist straps. A plastic racket shell or handle may change how the controller feels in your hand, but it is not required to start Tennis and does not replace the Joy-Con itself or its wrist strap. If you consider one, treat it as an optional grip preference rather than core game hardware, and make sure it does not obstruct the strap connection or the controller buttons you need.

3. Do not substitute a Pro Controller

A Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is not a compatible controller for Nintendo Switch Sports, according to Nintendo’s official FAQ. That makes it a poor purchase for Tennis even if you already use one for other Switch games. The incompatibility is not solved by pairing it in the console’s controller settings, and it cannot provide the detached Joy-Con motion setup Nintendo documents for Switch Sports.

If your goal is Tennis, put the budget toward a supported standard Joy-Con and a wrist strap instead. If you already own a Pro Controller, keep it for compatible games, but do not count it when planning how many Tennis players your setup can support.

4. Skip the Leg Strap for a Tennis-only setup

The Leg Strap holds a Joy-Con against the thigh. Nintendo’s product information identifies it as required for some Soccer play, while Nintendo’s support information describes it for Ring Fit Adventure or Nintendo Switch Sports. Those statements do not make it a Tennis accessory. Tennis does not use the thigh-mounted control scheme, so the strap adds no Tennis action or accuracy.

When a Leg Strap can still make sense

  • You plan to play the supported Soccer modes that require it.
  • You also use compatible software such as Ring Fit Adventure.
  • You are buying a physical copy of Switch Sports that includes a Leg Strap and want the accessory for those other activities.

Remember that Nintendo’s Leg Strap diagram notes that a Joy-Con is sold separately and is not included with the strap. Buying the Leg Strap alone therefore does not create a complete Tennis controller setup.

5. Buying paths based on what you already own

You own the game and one working Joy-Con

Start with a wrist strap for that Joy-Con. If the strap supplied with your controller is present and undamaged, no Tennis-specific purchase may be necessary for solo play. Test the controller’s motion input before inviting another player; if it is unreliable, replacing the Joy-Con is more useful than buying a grip or Leg Strap.

You own the game but need local multiplayer

Count the players first, then count working standard Joy-Con controllers and wrist straps. Purchase only the shortfall. For example, if you have one usable Joy-Con and want two people to play, add one supported Joy-Con and one strap. If you want a larger local group, add enough controllers and straps for the planned setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You do not own the game

The physical version of Nintendo Switch Sports is one purchase path for new players. Check the package contents and remember that an included Leg Strap is aimed at supported Soccer play, not Tennis. You will still need a compatible Joy-Con for Tennis and a wrist strap for every detached controller.

You are replacing a damaged controller

Replace the standard Joy-Con that has lost reliable motion input, is physically damaged, or is no longer available. Pair the replacement with the console, attach its strap, and test it in a short Tennis session before relying on it for multiplayer.

6. Setup procedure before your first Tennis session

  1. Confirm ownership and mode. Make sure Nintendo Switch Sports is installed or that the physical game is inserted. Tennis cannot be played in Handheld Mode, so plan to use detached Joy-Con.
  2. Count players and controllers. Decide whether the session is solo or local multiplayer. Set aside one supported Joy-Con per active player or per game requirement.
  3. Inspect each controller. Check that the Joy-Con is charged, its buttons respond, and its motion input is dependable. Remove any damaged strap or rail accessory.
  4. Attach each wrist strap. Use the HAC-014 strap or a compatible replacement, slide it fully onto the Joy-Con rail, and lock it.
  5. Adjust the wrist loop. Tighten the loop enough to stay on during a swing while leaving comfortable circulation.
  6. Clear the play area. Move furniture, breakables, pets, and other people outside the swing path. Nintendo specifically advises allowing adequate room around you.
  7. Start Tennis and select the controller arrangement. Use the game’s supported single- or paired-Joy-Con configuration for the number of players present.
  8. Warm up with controlled swings. Begin with small movements to verify that each controller is responding and that straps remain secure.

7. Safety checks that matter more than extra accessories

  • Use the strap every time. Do not remove it because the session is short or because you are sitting close to the console.
  • Keep a full swing radius clear. The controller can travel farther than expected when a grip slips.
  • Leave space between players. In multiplayer, separate players enough that their arms and controllers cannot collide.
  • Check the lock periodically. If the strap loosens or slides on the rail, stop and refit it.
  • Use comfortable movement. Tennis reads motion; exaggerated force is unnecessary and increases the chance of hitting something.
  • Stop if equipment is damaged. A frayed loop, cracked slider, or loose rail connection is a replacement issue, not something to work around during play.

8. Troubleshooting common accessory problems

The game does not respond to a Pro Controller

This is expected rather than a pairing fault. Nintendo lists the Pro Controller as incompatible with Switch Sports. Switch to a supported detached Joy-Con and attach its wrist strap.

Tennis will not start while the console is being held

Switch Sports does not support Handheld Mode. Detach the Joy-Con and use the supported wireless-controller setup instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The strap keeps sliding off

Stop play, remove the Joy-Con, and slide the strap fully onto the rail before locking it. If the lock or rail is worn or damaged, replace the strap or controller. Do not continue with a strap that cannot stay secured.

There are not enough controllers for multiplayer

Use the game’s supported single- or paired-Joy-Con arrangement and add standard Joy-Con controllers until each intended player has a supported controller. Match every added controller with its own wrist strap.

A player bought a Leg Strap expecting better Tennis control

The Leg Strap is for supported Soccer play and compatible software such as Ring Fit Adventure; it does not improve Tennis. Keep it for those uses, but obtain the required Joy-Con and wrist strap for Tennis.

A replacement Joy-Con behaves inconsistently

Confirm that it is charged and properly paired, then test its motion response with gentle swings. If the controller remains unreliable, treat it as a defective or unsuitable replacement rather than compensating with a different accessory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. A practical purchase checklist

Use this checklist before ordering anything:

  • Do you already own Nintendo Switch Sports? If yes, skip the physical-game purchase.
  • How many people will play Tennis at the same time?
  • How many working standard Joy-Con controllers do you have?
  • Is there one secure wrist strap for every detached controller?
  • Are any existing straps, locks, rails, or controllers damaged?
  • Are you accidentally considering a Pro Controller, which Nintendo lists as incompatible?
  • Are you considering a Leg Strap only for Tennis, even though Nintendo ties it to Soccer play and other supported software?
  • Is there enough clear space for every player to swing safely?

Bottom line for different players

Solo player

Use one working detached Joy-Con with a properly fitted wrist strap. That is the focused Tennis setup.

Local multiplayer household

Buy additional standard Joy-Con controllers only when your current supply is too small, and provide a wrist strap for each one. Do not count a Pro Controller toward the player total.

Player interested in several Switch Sports events

Add a Leg Strap only if you also want the supported Soccer play that uses it. It remains unnecessary for Tennis, whose control scheme is based on Joy-Con motion.

New owner choosing a physical copy

A physical game purchase can get you started, but verify the included accessories and budget separately for the Joy-Con controllers and wrist straps required for Tennis. Any included Leg Strap is not a replacement for those items.
