For the current Nintendo Switch 2 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, start with Nvidia DLSS in the Quality or Graphics menu. The available analysis indicates cleaner edges and better definition in busy textures than Filmic SMAA T2X at the same interpreted pixel data. Test Filmic SMAA T2X in motion if DLSS produces artifacts or appears to affect performance. Use FidelityFX CAS as a sharpening alternative, not as evidence of a higher native resolution.

Recommended settings at a glance

The best setup depends on whether you value image reconstruction, high-refresh output, or the television’s maximum output resolution. These are sensible starting points for the Switch 2 build of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4:

Setting Recommended starting value Why
Upscaling/anti-aliasing Nvidia DLSS Better edge treatment and sharper definition in detailed textures, according to the available Digital Foundry analysis.
Fallback upscaler Filmic SMAA T2X Use if DLSS shows reconstruction artifacts or you prefer its motion appearance. No controlled test establishes a universal performance winner.
Sharpening alternative FidelityFX CAS Useful for tuning contrast and perceived sharpness; it does not prove that the game is rendering at a higher native resolution.
TV output for high refresh 1440p or 1080p Nintendo supports 120 Hz output at these resolutions when the game and display are compatible.
TV output for maximum resolution 2160p/4K Use when you prefer 4K output; Nintendo caps 4K TV mode at 60 fps.
HDR Compatible software only Avoid forcing HDR globally unless your display and games are set up for it. Calibrate with the console’s Adjust HDR tool.
ALLM/Game Mode On, when supported Lets a compatible television switch automatically to its low-latency mode.
VRR On, when supported TV-mode VRR was added in Nintendo’s September 10, 2026 system update and requires a compatible display and game.

Why DLSS is the best first test for a sharper picture

DLSS and Filmic SMAA T2X are not simply two resolution presets. They are different reconstruction and anti-aliasing approaches that work from the image data produced by the game. In the available analysis, Digital Foundry’s Tom Morgan said the Switch 2 DLSS option appears to interpret the same pixel data—the same resolution—as Filmic SMAA. The advantage is how that data is reconstructed over time.

Morgan described two practical benefits. First, DLSS applies more intelligent edge treatment using accumulated frame data, which reduces stair-stepping and leaves cleaner lines after the image settles. Second, it handles irregular, high-frequency detail more effectively. Door decals, foliage and other busy textures can look more clearly defined rather than blending into a soft or unstable pattern.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

That makes DLSS the rational starting point when your complaint is a generally soft image, shimmering outlines, or indistinct environmental detail. It does not mean every scene will look perfect, and it does not establish that DLSS renders at a higher internal resolution.

How to set DLSS

  1. Launch Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on Switch 2.
  2. Open the game’s Settings menu.
  3. Enter Graphics or Quality, using the label shown by your game build.
  4. Find Upscaling, Anti-Aliasing, or the equivalent image-reconstruction control.
  5. Select Nvidia DLSS.
  6. Apply the setting, then inspect a scene containing thin geometry, foliage, signage, and decals both while standing still and while moving.

Do not judge the option from a paused menu image alone. Temporal reconstruction can look cleaner after several frames have accumulated, while motion can reveal ghosting, breakup, or other artifacts that are invisible in a still screenshot.

DLSS, Filmic SMAA T2X and FidelityFX CAS compared

The three controls serve different purposes. The evidence available for Switch 2 does not provide a controlled numerical benchmark for sharpness, frame rate, frame time, or artifact frequency, so the table separates what is supported from what still requires your own comparison.

Nvidia DLSS Analysis points to cleaner reconstructed edges once the frame settles; final-build motion testing is still needed. Analysis specifically reports improved definition for busy details such as door decals and foliage. Check for temporal artifacts or other reconstruction errors in motion; no universal artifact rate is published. No controlled Switch 2 number is supplied. First choice when you want the sharpest-looking general image.
Filmic SMAA T2X Use it as the direct motion comparison if DLSS looks unstable or if you prefer its temporal behavior. It is the comparison baseline for the same interpreted pixel data in the cited analysis. May look less defined in complex textures than DLSS, depending on scene and motion. No final-build winner is established. Fallback when DLSS introduces artifacts or appears to carry a performance cost.
FidelityFX CAS Not established by the cited analysis as a temporal reconstruction winner. Increases perceived contrast and crispness; it is a sharpening control rather than proof of higher native resolution. Excessive sharpening can emphasize ringing, noise, or jagged edges. No controlled Switch 2 number is supplied. Fine-tuning when you prefer a crisper contrast profile or do not want DLSS.

A reliable A/B comparison method

  1. Use the same mission, location, field of view, display input, and output resolution for both tests.
  2. Stand still and inspect thin lines, railings, weapon geometry, foliage, door decals, and distant signage.
  3. Move the camera slowly, then sprint and rotate quickly. Look for shimmer, trails behind moving objects, broken foliage, and changes in edge stability.
  4. Repeat the run with DLSS and Filmic SMAA T2X before deciding. If you use CAS, change only its sharpening control so that the comparison remains meaningful.
  5. Choose the image that remains legible during actual aiming and traversal, not the one that produces the most impressive paused screenshot.

Choosing 1080p, 1440p or 4K TV output

Output resolution and in-game reconstruction are separate decisions. Selecting 4K on the console does not automatically make the game’s internal image native 4K, and selecting 1440p does not automatically make it softer. The output mode determines what signal the Switch 2 sends to the television; DLSS, SMAA T2X or CAS determines how the game constructs its image before that signal is displayed.

TV output Refresh-rate rule Choose it when Important limitation
1080p Supports 120 Hz output on a compatible display and game. You want the broadest high-refresh compatibility or your display is 1080p. Lower output resolution than 1440p or 4K; perceived detail also depends on the TV’s scaling.
1440p Supports 120 Hz output on a compatible display and game. You have a 1440p/120 Hz display and want a balance between detail and refresh rate. 120 Hz still depends on the game, television, cable path and console configuration.
2160p/4K Nintendo’s 4K TV mode is capped at 60 fps. You prioritize a 4K output signal and your display handles the game’s 60-fps ceiling well. It is not the choice for 120 Hz output from the console.

Nintendo lists 720p, 1080p, 1440p and 2160p/4K TV output options for Switch 2. It also states that output up to 120 fps is available for compatible games and displays, while 4K TV mode has a maximum of 60 fps. Those are output capabilities, not a promise that every Call of Duty mode runs at those rates.

How to select the output resolution

  1. Open the Switch 2 System Settings.
  2. Choose Display or the console’s TV-output settings.
  3. Set the resolution to 1080p, 1440p, or 2160p according to your display and priority.
  4. If high-refresh play is the goal, use 1080p or 1440p and confirm that the television’s input is configured for its 120 Hz mode.
  5. Restart the game if it does not immediately detect the new output mode.

If a 4K television makes 1440p look sharper than 4K in a particular scene, that is not proof that the lower setting has more game detail. The television may scale the two signals differently, or the game may use a different reconstruction path. Compare the same scene with identical in-game settings and judge moving detail rather than menu text.

Getting 120 Hz working

Start with 1080p or 1440p, because Nintendo’s documentation limits 120 Hz output support to those resolutions. Then check every part of the signal chain:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The television must advertise 120 Hz on the exact HDMI input you are using.
  • The console must be connected through a compatible dock and cable path.
  • The TV input may need an enhanced, high-bandwidth, or similar mode enabled in the television menu.
  • The game must support a high-refresh mode; the console’s ability to output 120 Hz does not force Call of Duty to render at 120 frames per second.
  • Disable picture-processing modes that add latency or override the display’s gaming input behavior.

Use the TV’s information panel or input diagnostics to verify the incoming signal. A 120 Hz-capable television can still report 60 Hz if the console is set to 4K, if the input mode is restricted, or if the game is outputting a 60-Hz signal.

HDR, ALLM and VRR settings

HDR

Set HDR to Compatible software only unless you have a specific reason to force HDR for every title. The television must support HDR, and the game must provide an HDR mode for the setting to improve the image. Use the Switch 2 Adjust HDR tool after connecting the console to the display and after changing the TV’s picture mode. Incorrect calibration can make dark areas disappear or highlights look flat, which may be mistaken for a resolution problem.

ALLM and Game Mode

Enable Auto Low-Latency Mode when both the TV and console path support it. ALLM allows the display to switch automatically to its low-latency game mode. If your television does not switch, select its Game Mode manually and confirm that the picture preset is not applying heavy motion smoothing or other processing.

VRR

Enable VRR when the display and game support it and the Switch 2 is fully updated. Nintendo’s September 10, 2026 system update added TV-mode VRR support. VRR matches the display’s refresh behavior to the game’s processing cadence within the supported range, but it does not create extra frames or sharpen the reconstructed image. If VRR is unavailable, check the TV input mode, HDMI connection and console update status before changing Call of Duty’s image options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RGB range and other console settings

Leave RGB range on Automatic unless your television manual requires a matching full-range or limited-range setting. The available Nintendo support material does not identify a Call of Duty-specific RGB override. A range mismatch can make blacks look crushed or the entire image look washed out, so fix that signal problem before judging DLSS or CAS.

Handheld mode: what Handheld Mode Boost can and cannot do

Handheld Mode Boost is not a native Call of Duty sharpness fix. Nintendo describes it as a feature that makes Nintendo Switch software run as if it were in TV mode. Its effect varies by software, it may increase power use, and Nintendo states that it has no effect on software for Nintendo Switch 2.

For a native Switch 2 Call of Duty build, use the game’s own DLSS, Filmic SMAA T2X and FidelityFX CAS controls. If the handheld image is soft, also check the game’s field of view, brightness and display scaling, but do not expect Handheld Mode Boost to change the native Switch 2 renderer.

Storage and installation considerations

A microSD Express card is the clearly documented physical accessory relevant to downloaded Switch 2 software. Nintendo identifies the microSD Express standard as necessary for faster access and smooth operation of Switch 2 software. It can help the game read installed data as intended, but storage speed or capacity does not change rendered resolution, anti-aliasing, frame rate, HDR quality or output sharpness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the game is installed on a card that does not meet the required standard, address that storage requirement before troubleshooting image quality. Once the software is running from suitable storage, return to the in-game reconstruction and display settings for visual tuning.

Troubleshooting a soft, unstable or inconsistent image

The picture is soft even with DLSS

  • Confirm that DLSS is actually selected after leaving the Graphics or Quality menu.
  • Check that the console output and the TV input are not applying an unexpected scaling mode.
  • Compare 1440p and 4K output on the same display; do not assume the higher output number means a higher internal render resolution.
  • Inspect moving foliage, railings and decals rather than judging a static loading screen.

DLSS shows trails, shimmer or broken detail

  • Repeat the comparison during movement, because temporal artifacts may appear only when the camera or objects move.
  • Switch to Filmic SMAA T2X and compare the same route and scene.
  • If SMAA is cleaner for your display and play style, keep it; the available evidence does not establish a universal performance or quality winner.

CAS looks harsh

Use FidelityFX CAS as a controlled sharpening adjustment. Reduce its strength if thin lines develop bright halos, foliage becomes noisy, or compression-like edges become more obvious. CAS changes perceived contrast; it is not a substitute for a higher native render resolution.

120 Hz or VRR is missing

  • For 120 Hz, switch from 4K to 1440p or 1080p.
  • Confirm the television’s high-refresh or enhanced HDMI mode on the specific input in use.
  • Update the Switch 2 system software and verify that the display supports the feature over its current connection.
  • Remember that a compatible output does not guarantee a 120-fps Call of Duty mode.

HDR looks darker or washed out

  • Use Compatible software only first.
  • Run Adjust HDR again after selecting the TV’s Game Mode.
  • Check that the TV is receiving HDR and is not applying a separate low-brightness preset.

A practical setup for different priorities

Sharpest general image

Select DLSS, use 1440p output on a 1440p/120 Hz display or 4K output on a 4K display, enable HDR only when correctly calibrated, and leave RGB range on Automatic. Compare DLSS with Filmic SMAA T2X during movement before settling on it.

High-refresh competitive play

Select 1080p or 1440p output, enable the display’s 120 Hz and Game Mode features, and turn on VRR when supported. Start with DLSS, then test Filmic SMAA T2X if motion artifacts or an inconsistent feel appear. Do not select 4K when the priority is 120 Hz output from the console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maximum television output resolution

Select 2160p/4K, use DLSS as the first reconstruction test, and accept the 4K TV-mode ceiling of 60 fps. Evaluate the actual game image at normal viewing distance; a 4K signal does not establish that every internal detail is rendered natively at 4K.

Handheld play

Use DLSS, Filmic SMAA T2X or CAS from the game’s Quality or Graphics menu. Do not rely on Handheld Mode Boost, which Nintendo says has no effect on native Switch 2 software.

What is established—and what is not

  • DLSS is the evidence-backed starting point for cleaner edges and sharper busy textures than Filmic SMAA in the cited early analysis.
  • Filmic SMAA T2X remains a legitimate fallback when DLSS artifacts or performance concerns outweigh its detail advantages.
  • FidelityFX CAS is a sharpening option, not proof of a higher-resolution render.
  • Switch 2 supports 1080p and 1440p output for 120 Hz when the game and display are compatible.
  • 4K TV output is capped at 60 fps.
  • HDR, ALLM and VRR require the appropriate display, software support and console configuration.
  • TV-mode VRR support was added in the September 10, 2026 system update.
  • Handheld Mode Boost does not affect native Switch 2 software.
  • No controlled independent figure in the available analysis establishes a specific sharpness gain, frame-rate difference or frame-time cost among DLSS, Filmic SMAA T2X and FidelityFX CAS.

Bottom line

Set Nvidia DLSS first for the sharpest-looking starting point in Switch 2’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Its reported advantages are cleaner reconstructed edges and better definition in busy textures, not a documented increase in native resolution. Compare Filmic SMAA T2X while moving if DLSS shows artifacts or does not feel consistent, and use FidelityFX CAS only as a sharpening preference. Choose 1440p or 1080p when 120 Hz matters; choose 4K when you prefer the highest output signal and accept the 60-fps ceiling. Calibrate HDR, enable Game Mode/ALLM and VRR only with compatible equipment, and do not expect Handheld Mode Boost or a faster storage card to sharpen the game’s rendered image.
