melonDS is the best all-around Nintendo DS emulator choice when you want one project that spans Windows, Android, and iPhone. On Windows, it is the strongest starting point for cross-platform support, modern rendering, save states, cheats, and dual-screen layouts. DeSmuME is the better-known mature desktop alternative, particularly if you want turbo mode, recording, extensive filters, and established gamepad support. On iPhone and iPad, Delta is the clearest route because it is distributed through the App Store and uses the melonDS core for Nintendo DS emulation.

Android users should begin with the official melonDS route. DeSmuME Android builds exist as ports or forks, but their provenance and update history need checking before installation. Whichever emulator you select, use game files and firmware you are legally entitled to use; emulator software and copied game data are separate legal questions.

Best Nintendo DS emulators by platform

Platform Best-documented choices Why choose them Important caveat
Windows melonDS; DeSmuME melonDS combines cross-platform development, OpenGL rendering, 3D upscaling, save states, cheats, joystick input and multiple display layouts. DeSmuME adds turbo, recording, filters, 3D upscaling and a mature desktop feature set. DeSmuME’s site names version 0.9.13 for Windows, macOS and Linux; check the current binary and its build provenance before installing.
Android melonDS; DeSmuME ports or forks melonDS publishes an Android download and documents joystick support, saves, cheats, dual-screen layouts and cross-platform development. Third-party DeSmuME packages can differ substantially. Verify the package source, permissions and update date.
iPhone and iPad Delta; melonDS iOS route Delta has an App Store listing, uses melonDS for DS emulation, supports controllers, save states, fast-forwarding, syncing and DS multiplayer features. App Store availability, regional distribution and operating-system requirements can change. Verify the current listing on your device.

What matters when choosing a DS emulator

Nintendo DS software depends on two displays, touch input, a microphone, a close-and-open lid action and, in some games, wireless communication. A useful comparison therefore goes beyond whether a program starts a ROM. Check these capabilities before committing to an emulator:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Compatibility and maturity: A near-complete emulation core and an actively maintained project reduce the chance that a particular game or peripheral feature becomes a dead end.
  • Rendering: OpenGL output, 3D upscaling, screen magnification and texture or pixel filters determine whether a DS game looks comfortable on a modern monitor or phone.
  • Dual-screen layout: Look for stacked, side-by-side and resizable arrangements. The best layout depends on whether you use touch controls, a mouse, a controller or a phone held in landscape orientation.
  • Input: Touchscreen, microphone, lid controls, keyboard mapping and physical-controller support are all useful. A gamepad does not replace touch input in every title, so an emulator must make both inputs easy to reach.
  • State management: Save states are convenient for experimentation, while ordinary in-game saves are the safer long-term method. Cheats and Action Replay support are separate features.
  • Connectivity: Local multiplayer, Wi-Fi emulation and Nintendo WFC replacement services are not interchangeable. Read the project’s current status before assuming that a wireless mode is complete.
  • Distribution and trust: An official download or App Store listing gives you a clearer update path than an anonymous package or an unmaintained fork.

melonDS: the strongest cross-platform recommendation

Platforms and project status

melonDS describes itself as an open-source Nintendo DS emulator for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS. That breadth is its main advantage: the same project is relevant if you use a desktop today and move to a phone later. Its published documentation describes a near-complete emulation core, just-in-time (JIT) recompilation and ongoing feature work rather than presenting every peripheral feature as finished.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

The project also documents real-time-clock emulation, microphone input, lid controls and joystick support. Those details matter for games that check the system clock, expect the lid to close or use microphone-driven interactions. They also make melonDS a more complete fit for unusual DS software than an emulator that only exposes buttons and two video windows.

Graphics and screen layouts

melonDS uses OpenGL rendering and supports 3D upscaling. Upscaling can make polygonal scenes cleaner on a high-resolution monitor or phone, while the original 2D artwork remains dependent on the chosen filter and display size. Multiple display layouts let you put the screens vertically, horizontally or in another arrangement suited to your controls. On a desktop, a side-by-side layout can leave room for a mouse; on a phone, a stacked landscape layout often keeps both screens visible without making either one tiny.

Saves, cheats and controls

The documented feature set includes save states, cheats and joystick input. Map a controller before starting a long session, then confirm that the touchscreen and microphone functions remain reachable for games that need them. Save states are useful before a difficult section or a branching decision, but keep using the game’s own save system as your primary progress record so that progress remains portable and less vulnerable to a damaged state file.

Wireless, DSi and GBA features

Wi-Fi and local multiplayer work is described as in progress, as is DSi functionality and GBA-slot support. Treat those labels as development status, not a promise that every wireless or Slot-2 scenario works today. If a game specifically requires DSi enhancements, a GBA cartridge accessory or a particular wireless service, check the current project notes and test with a copy of your own legally obtained data before relying on it.

Who should choose melonDS

Choose melonDS first when you value one open-source project across several operating systems, modern rendering, flexible dual-screen layouts and a clear path to controller use. It is also the most sensible starting point for Android because the project publishes an Android download instead of leaving you to identify an unknown fork. Its in-progress networking and DSi features are the main reasons not to treat it as a universal replacement for every hardware setup.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

DeSmuME: a mature desktop alternative

Desktop feature set

DeSmuME is a free, open-source emulator centered on Windows, Mac and Linux. Its published feature list is unusually broad for desktop use: turbo mode, save and restore states, Action Replay cheats, pixel and texture filters, screen magnification, 3D upscaling, Slot-2 emulation, high-level-emulation (HLE) BIOS support, AVI and WAV recording, and gamepad support.

Turbo mode is useful for moving through slow dialogue or repeated travel, while frame or screen filters let you choose between crisp pixels and a softer enlarged image. Recording support is valuable for demonstrations and archival projects because the emulator can capture video and audio rather than requiring a separate screen-recording workflow. Slot-2 emulation is relevant to software that expects a Game Boy Advance accessory, although the exact behavior still depends on the title and the build you use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Version and build provenance

The project site names version 0.9.13 for Windows, macOS and Linux and says compatibility improved in that release. That named version should not be read as proof that it is the newest build available at the moment you install it. Check the project’s current release information, operating-system package and publisher before running an executable. Avoid treating a repackaged download site as equivalent to the project’s own distribution.

Android and iOS ports

DeSmuME’s site describes Android ports or forks and iOS ports or forks rather than presenting those mobile packages as the same official desktop distribution. That distinction matters: a fork can have different controls, permissions, update frequency and compatibility. If you test one, record its exact package name and release date, review requested permissions and scan for an identifiable maintainer. For most Android readers, melonDS is the lower-risk first installation because its own project documents an Android build.

Who should choose DeSmuME

Pick DeSmuME on Windows or another desktop when you specifically want turbo, recording, extensive filtering choices or the established workflow of a long-running desktop emulator. It is also a reasonable second emulator for troubleshooting: if a title behaves differently in melonDS, trying the other mature desktop implementation can help separate a game-specific issue from a configuration problem. There is no published accuracy percentage or universal compatibility score that would justify declaring one emulator perfect.

Delta: the clearest iPhone and iPad route

Why Delta is the practical iOS choice

Delta’s documentation describes it as an all-in-one classic game emulator for non-jailbroken iOS devices and identifies melonDS as the core used for Nintendo DS support. Its App Store listing makes distribution simpler than relying on an obscure iOS port: availability, updates and requirements are presented through Apple’s normal store process, although those details can vary by region and over time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Controllers and touch input

Delta documents support for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One S, Xbox Series X and MFi controllers, as well as Bluetooth and wired keyboards. Button mappings are customizable. A physical controller is especially useful when the lower DS screen is reserved for touch gestures or when virtual buttons cover too much of a small phone display. Keep touch controls available because some DS games require tapping, drawing or sliding rather than ordinary directional input.

Saves, speed and synchronization

Delta supports save states and fast-forwarding. It also documents synchronization through Google Drive and Dropbox, which can help keep progress available across compatible devices. Synchronization is not a substitute for a backup strategy: retain normal in-game saves and confirm that a state or save has actually uploaded before deleting local data or changing phones.

DS multiplayer developments

The App Store listing records 2025 updates that added or expanded DS online multiplayer through community Nintendo WFC servers and fixed several DS display and audio issues. This is a more specific claim than “all wireless play works.” Community services can have their own availability and compatibility limits, so check Delta’s current release notes and the service instructions before planning a multiplayer session.

Who should choose Delta

Choose Delta if you want Nintendo DS emulation on an iPhone or iPad without jailbreaking, prefer an App Store installation and want documented controller, save-state, fast-forward and synchronization features. melonDS also states that it supports iOS, but its distribution path is less explicit than Delta’s App Store route, so Delta is the simpler recommendation for most iPhone readers.

Platform-by-platform recommendations

Windows: start with melonDS, keep DeSmuME available

  1. Choose the project: Start with melonDS for cross-platform development, OpenGL upscaling, flexible layouts and current feature work. Choose DeSmuME first if turbo, recording or its filter and magnification tools are your priorities.
  2. Use a trusted build: Download from the emulator project’s own distribution channel and confirm the operating-system package. For DeSmuME, compare the package with the project’s named 0.9.13 release information and any newer release notice.
  3. Configure displays: Select a stacked or side-by-side arrangement, set an integer or comfortable scale, and test both screens before changing advanced filters. A layout that looks good in a window may be too large for full-screen play.
  4. Configure input: Map keyboard or gamepad buttons, then test touch, microphone and lid actions in a title that uses them. Save the profile after confirming that the second screen receives mouse or controller-assisted touch input as intended.
  5. Test saving: Make one in-game save and one save state, close the emulator, reopen it and verify both. This catches write-permission or path mistakes before a long play session.

Android: favor the documented melonDS package

  1. Check the source: Use the melonDS project’s published Android route where possible. If considering a DeSmuME port or fork, identify the maintainer, release date, requested permissions and update history first.
  2. Review storage and permissions: Grant only the access the package needs to read your legally obtained game files and write saves. An unexplained request for unrelated personal data is a reason to stop and find another build.
  3. Set a landscape layout: Try stacked and side-by-side screens, then adjust touch-button size and spacing. A Bluetooth controller can leave the display unobstructed, but retain a way to reach DS touch controls.
  4. Map external controls: Connect the joystick or gamepad, assign buttons and test the microphone, lid and touchscreen functions in a representative game.
  5. Back up saves: Locate the emulator’s save directory, copy a normal in-game save and verify that a restored copy opens before relying on the device as your only backup.

iPhone and iPad: install Delta when available

  1. Verify availability: Search the App Store for the current Delta listing and check the displayed developer, version and iOS requirement for your device. Store availability can differ by country.
  2. Add only lawful game files: Transfer game data that you own or are otherwise licensed to use. Delta’s emulator status does not grant permission to download someone else’s ROMs or firmware.
  3. Choose a screen arrangement: Rotate the device and test Delta’s DS layout options. Landscape orientation generally gives a controller more room, while portrait can make touch interaction easier on a small phone.
  4. Pair a controller if desired: Delta documents PS4, PS5, Xbox and MFi controller support, along with Bluetooth and wired keyboards. Open the emulator’s mapping controls, assign buttons and confirm that touch remains available.
  5. Set up saves and synchronization: Create an in-game save and a save state, then test reopening both. If you enable Google Drive or Dropbox synchronization, wait for a confirmed upload before removing local data.
  6. Check multiplayer requirements: For DS online play, read the current Delta release notes and community Nintendo WFC server instructions. Do not assume that every title or wireless mode is supported simply because multiplayer is listed.

melonDS versus DeSmuME

Decision factor melonDS DeSmuME
Operating-system scope Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS documented Windows, Mac and Linux focus; Android and iOS ports or forks documented
Rendering OpenGL rendering and 3D upscaling 3D upscaling plus pixel and texture filters
Display options Multiple display layouts Screen magnification and configurable display tools
Input Joystick, microphone and lid controls documented Gamepad support documented
Save and cheat tools Save states and cheats Save and restore states plus Action Replay cheats
Speed and capture JIT recompilation documented Turbo mode and AVI/WAV recording documented
Wireless and extras Wi-Fi/local multiplayer, DSi and GBA-slot work described as in progress Slot-2 emulation and HLE BIOS listed
Best fit Cross-platform users and Android readers wanting the project’s own build Desktop users who value turbo, recording and mature filtering tools

The table does not establish a universal winner. melonDS has the clearer cross-platform story and is the better default for Android. DeSmuME remains compelling on desktop when its specialized tools matter more than moving the same emulator between devices.

Controllers and dual-screen ergonomics

Touch-heavy DS games are difficult to judge from screenshots alone. On a monitor, reserve a visible area for the lower screen and map a mouse or controller button to touch actions only when the game allows it. On a phone, test the emulator in both orientations before settling on a layout: a stacked view preserves the relationship between screens, while side-by-side views can make text easier to read.

A Bluetooth or MFi controller solves the problem of covering the screen with virtual buttons. Delta documents the broadest named controller list in this comparison, while melonDS documents joystick input. Pairing a controller does not eliminate the need for touch, microphone or lid controls, so choose an emulator profile that exposes those functions quickly.

Legal and copyright considerations

An emulator is software; ROMs, BIOS files, firmware and copied cartridge data are separate materials with their own copyright and licensing questions. melonDS states that the emulator is legal to use while advising users to respect copyright and use games they legally obtained. That is general guidance, not jurisdiction-specific legal advice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Follow the law where you live and the license terms attached to your own games and dumps.
  • Do not treat an emulator’s open-source license as permission to download commercial game files.
  • Keep backup copies of your own saves, but do not share copyrighted game data unless you have the rights to do so.
  • When a setup asks for BIOS or firmware, use only files you are entitled to possess and follow the emulator’s documentation.

Common problems and practical fixes

The game runs but one screen is unusable

Change the dual-screen arrangement before changing graphics settings. Try stacked, side-by-side and magnified views, then resize the window or rotate the phone. If touch input is mapped to the wrong screen, reset the input profile and assign the lower-screen touch area again.

Controls work, but touch or microphone actions do not

Confirm that the emulator exposes touchscreen, microphone and lid controls separately from ordinary buttons. Test with a game known to use the missing feature. A physical gamepad can handle movement while the mouse, touchscreen or keyboard supplies the DS-specific action.

A save state will not load

Try the normal in-game save first, then verify that the state belongs to the same game revision and emulator profile. Check that the save directory is writable and that a synchronization service has finished uploading before replacing local files.

An Android package looks suspicious

Stop installation and verify the exact package source, maintainer, permissions and update date. Prefer the melonDS project’s documented Android route over an unidentified DeSmuME fork. Never disable device security merely to run an unverified build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wireless multiplayer does not connect

Separate local multiplayer, emulated Wi-Fi and community Nintendo WFC services in your troubleshooting. melonDS describes Wi-Fi and local multiplayer work as in progress. Delta’s 2025 App Store updates mention DS online multiplayer through community Nintendo WFC servers, but each service and game can impose additional requirements.

Final recommendation

Use melonDS on Windows and Android when you want the most consistent cross-platform choice, OpenGL rendering, 3D upscaling, flexible screen layouts, save states, cheats and documented joystick support. Use DeSmuME on desktop when turbo mode, recording, filters, magnification or its mature desktop workflow are decisive. Use Delta on iPhone or iPad when an App Store installation, controller support, synchronization and a melonDS-based DS core are the priorities. None of these choices removes the need to verify current builds, protect your saves and use game data lawfully.
