For most small teams, managed Nextcloud is the safer choice; for technical operators, a self-managed VPS is usually the lowest-cost route. Reported options range from roughly €4.90 per month for 500 GB to enterprise plans costing hundreds of euros monthly. The right provider depends less on the headline price than on data-center location, a usable Data Processing Agreement (DPA), backup and update responsibility, user and storage limits, and whether custom apps are permitted.
Nextcloud hosting options at a glance
Nextcloud is self-hosted file sync, collaboration and productivity software. A hosting company can operate the server for you, or you can rent a virtual private server (VPS) and administer Nextcloud yourself. Those are fundamentally different services even when they use the same application.
| Option | Who operates Nextcloud? | Typical evidence in the available offers | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Managed Nextcloud | The provider handles the operating system, Nextcloud updates, monitoring and usually backups. | Plans from about €4.90–€99 per month in the reported offers; storage and user caps vary widely. | Teams that want predictable maintenance and do not have a dedicated administrator. |
| Self-managed VPS | You install, secure, update, back up and troubleshoot Nextcloud. | A Contabo blog reports €4.50 per month for a 10–15-person team on Cloud VPS 4; comparable VPS pricing and specifications change. | Administrators who need full control, custom apps or a highly tailored setup. |
All prices in this article are reported figures from roundups or provider material rather than verified current quotes. Confirm the current amount, taxes, storage, user definition, backup retention and contract terms before ordering.
Reported managed Nextcloud providers
The following providers appeared in the available material. The descriptions distinguish provider claims from details reported by roundups, because no independent uptime, support or performance benchmark was available.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Hetzner Storage Share
Roundups repeatedly recommend Storage Share as a managed Nextcloud service. They report hosting in Falkenstein, Germany, automatic updates, daily backups and monthly billing without a minimum contract. An entry plan is reported at approximately €5 per month for 1 TB. Roundups also say the service normally runs one major version behind the newest Nextcloud release and permits only a limited selection of custom plugins.
That combination suits a user who values a low recurring price, German hosting and provider-managed maintenance more than immediate access to every new Nextcloud feature. The version lag can be a stability advantage, but it matters if your workflow depends on an app that requires the newest major release. Ask which apps are available, how backup restoration works and whether daily backups are retained for a stated period.
Stellarhosted
Stellarhosted markets European hosting and cites ISO 27001 and GDPR compliance, along with updates, monitoring and backups. Reported plans are:
| Plan | Reported price | Reported allowance |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | €99 per month | Up to 10 users and 10 GB |
| Premium | €249 per month | Limits not stated in the available material |
| Custom | From €499 per month | Configured to order |
The Standard allowance is unusually small relative to its reported price, so verify whether “10 GB” means total storage, per user or a typographical limitation. Request the certificate scope for the exact Nextcloud service, the backup schedule and retention, and the service-level terms before treating the compliance claims as procurement evidence.
Cloudbasedbackup
The reported pricing page lists three tiers, all said to use German data centers:

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
| Reported price | Storage | User limit |
|---|---|---|
| €4.90 per month | 500 GB | Up to 10 users |
| €9.90 per month | 1 TB | Up to 25 users |
| €39.90 per month | 5 TB | Up to 25 users |
The provider material reportedly notes that regulatory compliance also depends on the customer’s own processes. That qualification is important: a German data center does not by itself make a deployment GDPR-compliant. Confirm the DPA, sub-processors, access controls, deletion process and backup locations.

LibreCloud
LibreCloud lists Personal, Business and Enterprise tiers. A Personal plan is reported at about $7.99 per month for five users and 1 TB. Its marketing advertises GDPR and HIPAA compliance, but data-center locations were not verified in the available material.
For a health, legal or other regulated workload, treat the compliance wording as a starting point rather than a certification of your particular use. Ask where primary data and backups reside, whether support staff can access content, which subcontractors are involved and whether a DPA covers every service component.
Cloudamo
One roundup reports plans starting at $5 per month for 100 GB, with data centers in the United States, Canada, the European Union and Singapore. The claim came from a roundup rather than a retrieved primary pricing page. GDPR suitability therefore depends on the region selected and on the contractual and technical controls attached to that region.
Do not assume that selecting an EU location automatically keeps every replica, log or support access inside the EU. Obtain written confirmation of the locations used for production data, backups and disaster recovery.

Stackhero
Roundup material reports a free trial, ISO 27001 and GDPR claims, and European or US server locations. Those details were not confirmed against a primary service page. Before relying on the trial, check whether it includes the same storage, support and backup behavior as a paid account, and whether trial data is deleted automatically.
IONOS
IONOS appears in its own Nextcloud hosting guide and in roundups. Managed Nextcloud pricing is reported as custom-quote rather than a published plan. One roundup calls IONOS an “official Nextcloud Platinum Partner,” but the retrieved material does not confirm that designation. Use the current list at nextcloud.com/partners to verify any partner claim before using it in a purchasing decision.
Self-managed VPS: the cheapest route only if you can operate it
A VPS gives you a virtual server with root or administrator access. You select the operating system, install Nextcloud and its database, and decide how updates, firewalls, backups and monitoring work. A Contabo blog reports that a team of 10–15 can run Nextcloud on Cloud VPS 4 for €4.50 per month. That is a reported example, not a universal cost: disk, CPU, backup storage, email delivery, monitoring and administrator time can add substantially to the monthly total.
What you must run yourself
- Operating-system security updates and reboot planning.
- Nextcloud core and app updates, including compatibility checks.
- A supported database and PHP version.
- TLS certificates, firewall rules, intrusion protection and administrator authentication.
- Separate, encrypted backups and periodic restoration tests.
- Monitoring for disk capacity, failed jobs, database errors, certificate expiry and unavailable services.
- Incident response, user support and documentation.
Self-hosting is attractive when you need an app or integration that managed hosts prohibit, must control every configuration detail, or already operate Linux services. It is a poor bargain if nobody is responsible for patching and restoring the system. A low VPS invoice does not compensate for lost data or an unplanned outage.

Managed hosting versus a VPS
| Decision factor | Managed service | Self-managed VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Updates | Provider schedules and applies them; policy and version lag differ by host. | You schedule, test and apply them. |
| Backups | Often included, but retention, location and restoration support must be confirmed. | You design and pay for the backup system. |
| Custom apps | May be restricted or approved individually. | Broad control, subject to your ability to secure and maintain them. |
| Administrative effort | Low; you manage users and content. | High; you operate the entire stack. |
| Predictability | Usually clearer per-user or per-storage billing. | Lower headline price but more variable labor and ancillary costs. |
| Failure recovery | Depends on the provider’s documented restore process and support response. | Depends on your backups, documentation and on-call capacity. |
How to evaluate GDPR and data residency
Nextcloud provides access controls, audit logs and data-export tools, but the software does not make an organization compliant by itself. A self-hosted installation on an EU-based server can be operated in a GDPR-compliant way when the configuration, contracts and internal processes are appropriate. The same principle applies to managed hosting.

Documents and locations to request
- Data Processing Agreement: Confirm that the provider acts as a processor for the services you will actually use.
- Sub-processor list: Identify cloud infrastructure, backup, email, support and monitoring companies.
- Exact data-center location: Ask separately about primary storage, replicas, backups, logs and disaster-recovery copies.
- Access model: Establish whether provider staff can access files, metadata, logs or encryption keys, and under what controls.
- Deletion and export: Get the process and timeline for exporting data and securely deleting all copies at contract end.
- Security evidence: If ISO 27001 is cited, verify that the certificate covers the specific hosting service, not merely another business unit.
Keep the answers with your records. A provider’s statement that it is “GDPR compliant” is not a substitute for a DPA, a sub-processor review and documented decisions about your own access, retention and incident procedures.
Pricing, limits and hidden constraints
Compare plans on equivalent units. “Five users” can mean five named accounts, five active users or an allowance that excludes guests. “One terabyte” may be pooled storage, while a provider may reserve space for versions, trash and backups. Ask whether traffic, external shares, mail relay, support and additional backup retention cost extra.
| Check | Why it changes the real cost |
|---|---|
| Storage measured as total or per user | A 1 TB pool can be very different from 1 TB for every account. |
| Guest and external-user policy | Some services count guests toward the paid-user limit. |
| Backup retention and restore fees | A daily backup without a stated retention period may not meet recovery requirements. |
| Version policy | A host that stays one major release behind may not support a newly required app. |
| Plugin and administrator access | Restrictions can force a more expensive plan or eliminate an integration. |
| Contract and cancellation terms | Monthly billing does not always mean immediate deletion or a prorated refund. |
A practical selection process
- Classify the workload. List the number of named users, expected storage, sharing with outsiders, desktop/mobile clients, office editing, calendar or talk features, and any regulated data.
- Choose the operating model. Select managed hosting unless your team can own patching, backup and incident response. Choose a VPS only after naming the person or team responsible for those tasks.
- Set a location requirement. Decide whether production, backups and support access must remain in the EU or a particular country.
- Shortlist by hard limits. Remove plans that fail your storage, user, app or regional requirements before comparing prices.
- Request written evidence. Obtain the DPA, sub-processors, certificate scope, backup policy, restore procedure and service-status history.
- Test with non-sensitive data. Check upload and download performance, sharing, mobile clients, notifications, search, versioning and administrator controls.
- Run a restore exercise. For a managed host, ask support to explain the exact process; for a VPS, restore into a separate instance and document the steps.
- Record exit steps. Verify how you export files, databases, calendars, contacts, audit logs and user accounts if you later migrate.
Migration and setup checklist
When moving to managed hosting
- Inventory users, groups, shares, external links, calendars, contacts, Talk rooms and installed apps.
- Confirm the target Nextcloud major version and app compatibility.
- Export data and database content according to the provider’s supported migration method.
- Lower DNS time-to-live before the cutover and schedule a read-only window.
- Recreate or verify user identities, quotas, groups and sharing permissions.
- Test representative files, version history, mobile synchronization and link access.
- Keep the old system intact until a documented restore and reconciliation check passes.
When deploying a VPS
- Use a supported Linux distribution and create a separate administrative account with strong authentication.
- Apply operating-system updates, configure a firewall and restrict administrative ports.
- Install a supported web server, PHP runtime and database version for the chosen Nextcloud release.
- Enable HTTPS with automatic certificate renewal and configure trusted domains.
- Configure background jobs, upload limits, mail delivery and storage quotas.
- Schedule encrypted backups to separate infrastructure; never treat a snapshot on the same VPS as your only copy.
- Monitor the system and test a full restore before inviting users.
Common failure modes
The plan is cheap but unusable
A low price can hide a storage pool too small for file versions, a user definition that counts guests, or no included restore assistance. Recalculate capacity using current data, annual growth, trash and version retention before signing up.
An app stops working after an update
Managed hosts may delay major releases, while VPS operators may update too quickly. Maintain an app inventory, read compatibility notes, and test updates in a staging instance when the app is business-critical.
Backups exist but cannot be restored
Backup status alone is not proof of recoverability. Request a sample restore or perform one yourself, verify permissions and sharing, and record the recovery time and data-loss window.

Data residency is misunderstood
The country named on a sales page may describe only the primary server. Ask where replicas, backups, logs and support access occur, and ensure the contract matches your answer.
“Official partner” is assumed without verification
Community discussions and roundups can be outdated or use “partner” loosely. Check the current directory at nextcloud.com/partners; if a provider is absent, describe it as a host rather than an official partner.
Which provider fits which situation?
| Your priority | Most relevant reported option | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest reported managed price with German hosting | Cloudbasedbackup or Hetzner Storage Share | Confirm current pricing, backup retention, app limits and contract terms. |
| Up to 25 users and 1–5 TB | Cloudbasedbackup | Reported tiers are €9.90 for 1 TB and €39.90 for 5 TB; verify that limits remain current. |
| Large managed-service budget and EU positioning | Stellarhosted | Reported plans begin at €99 monthly; validate the 10 GB Standard allowance and certificate scope. |
| Five users and 1 TB at a reported dollar price | LibreCloud | Data-center locations were not verified; obtain residency and DPA details. |
| Choice of geographic regions | Cloudamo or Stackhero | Location and compliance details are roundup-reported; confirm them directly. |
| Custom managed deployment | IONOS | Pricing is reported as quote-based; verify partner status independently. |
| Maximum control and lowest infrastructure invoice | Self-managed VPS | You own security, updates, backups, compliance configuration and support. |
Bottom line for 2026 buyers
Start with a managed service when reliability and administrative simplicity matter more than unrestricted customization. The reported €4.90 Cloudbasedbackup tier and approximately €5 Hetzner Storage Share entry offer are the low-price benchmarks to investigate, while Stellarhosted targets organizations willing to pay for a more managed, service-oriented offer. A VPS can cost less on paper, but only an operator with time and expertise should choose it.
Whichever route you take, make the decision on documented data locations, a DPA and sub-processors, backup restoration, update policy, user and storage definitions, app permissions and an exit plan. Treat every listed price and every partner or certification claim as something to verify in the current contract.
