For most AI teams, start with GNews, NewsData.io, NewsAPI.ai/Event Registry, Mediastack, or NewsAPI.org, then choose by freshness, rights, archive depth, geography, language, and cost per usable article—not by request count alone. Add Alpha Vantage when your application is specifically about financial markets and sentiment.
The right API depends on whether an agent must react to breaking news, a RAG index needs years of replayable stories, or a monitoring pipeline needs broad multilingual coverage. The comparison below separates those workloads and shows where free tiers stop being suitable for production.
At-a-glance comparison
| API | Coverage and language facts | Published entry or production figures | Archive, latency, or rights details |
|---|---|---|---|
| GNews | Structured JSON aimed at AI, LLM, RAG, agent, monitoring, and research workflows | Free: 100 requests/day, up to 10 articles per request | Free data has a 12-hour delay and 30-day history; Essential is €49.99/month with 1,000 requests/day, up to 25 articles/request, real-time access, commercial use, full content, and history from 2020 |
| NewsData.io | 100,000+ sources in 206 countries and 89 languages, according to the GNews Team 2026 comparison | Free: 200 credits/day | Free tier has a 12-hour delay; paid quota and archive vary by tier, and one credit can return up to 50 articles |
| NewsAPI.ai/Event Registry | 150,000+ outlets, according to the GNews Team 2026 comparison | 2,000-search free tier; $90/month plan with 5,000 searches | Historical data is reported back to 2014; historical searches consume tokens, so query complexity affects cost |
| Mediastack | 7,500+ sources in 50+ countries and 13 languages, according to the GNews Team 2026 comparison | Free: 100 calls/month; Standard: $24.99/month for 10,000 calls | Free data is delayed; Standard includes live and historical data plus commercial use |
| NewsAPI.org | General news API with a simple, familiar request model | Developer: 100 requests/day; Business: $449/month for 250,000 requests/month | Developer has a 24-hour delay, one-month search age, and development/testing use; Business provides real-time articles and five-year search |
| Alpha Vantage | Market-news and sentiment data covering stocks, cryptocurrencies, forex, fiscal policy, M&A, IPOs, and related financial topics | Documentation is focused on financial-news functionality rather than broad general-news coverage | Use it when financial entities and sentiment matter more than worldwide general-news breadth |
Figures and plan terms can change. Treat the values above as the published 2026 comparison point and verify current limits, rights, and pricing before committing an application to a provider.
What matters in an AI news API
Freshness and latency
A breaking-news agent cannot treat a delayed free tier as live data. Separate feeds into three classes during design: real-time delivery for alerts and event response, delayed delivery for low-risk prototypes, and historical replay for research or backfilling. A 12-hour delay may be acceptable for a weekly trend digest but can make an incident-response agent act on stale facts. A 24-hour delay is even more restrictive when the product promises current coverage.
#1 Best Overall
Content rights are separate from quota
A plan can allow thousands of calls while still restricting how you retain or show the returned material. Check four independent permissions before indexing articles: commercial use, persistent storage, republication or customer-facing display, and summaries generated from the content. The development plan of NewsAPI.org is explicitly described for development and testing, while its Business plan is described for production and published commercial projects. Do not infer production rights from a free request allowance.
Retrieval quality beats headline volume
For RAG, the useful unit is an accepted, complete, non-duplicate document. Source diversity, language and country filters, relevance ranking, deduplication, story clustering, entities, and sentiment can reduce the noise that reaches your embedding model. An API returning many copies of the same wire story may cost less per request but more per useful chunk after storage and review.
Archive depth and replay
Historical coverage determines whether you can reproduce an evaluation set, investigate an old event, or train a classifier without collecting data prospectively. NewsAPI.ai/Event Registry is reported back to 2014. NewsAPI.org Business offers five-year search. GNews Essential history starts in 2020. NewsData.io plans are reported to range from six months to as much as ten years, depending on tier. Confirm the exact date window, filters, and retention terms for the plan you will buy.

Normalize unit economics
Requests, credits, searches, tokens, and returned articles are different currencies. NewsData.io credits can return up to 50 articles, while NewsAPI.ai historical work is billed in tokens; neither can be compared directly with a simple monthly request price. Calculate cost per accepted article after filtering, deduplication, full-text availability, and storage. Include the cost of reruns, pagination, failed requests, and enrichment calls.
Operational fit
Before production, verify rate limits, service-level commitments, support, pagination behavior, retries, server-side or CORS requirements, and the effort required to migrate. Keep the raw provider response alongside a normalized record. That preserves provider-specific fields while allowing a second feed to be introduced without rebuilding your index.
Provider-by-provider guidance
GNews: a practical starting point for AI retrieval
GNews is the most directly positioned of the general-purpose options for AI workflows. Its product material describes structured JSON for AI, LLM, RAG, agent, monitoring, and research use cases, and its MCP server exposes the API to LLMs and AI agents. That positioning makes it a natural first evaluation for a team building a retrieval or tool-calling prototype.
The free allowance is useful for a proof of concept, but its 12-hour delay and 30-day history rule out many breaking-news and long-term replay workloads. The Essential plan adds real-time availability, full content, commercial use, and history from 2020, which are the capabilities that generally matter when an index is customer-facing.
Rank #2
Evaluate the number of complete articles returned per request rather than the request quota alone. A query that returns 25 usable documents can have a lower ingestion cost than one that returns ten partial documents, even when both plans appear similar on a request basis.
NewsData.io: broadest stated geography and language reach
NewsData.io is the strongest candidate when country and language breadth drive the product. The 2026 comparison reports more than 100,000 sources across 206 countries and 89 languages. Those figures make it attractive for global monitoring, but source counts do not guarantee equal quality in every market.
Build a representative test set before selecting a tier: include the countries, scripts, local spellings, and low-volume topics your users actually request. Measure whether the returned articles are readable in the target language, whether local sources are duplicated by international syndication, and whether the country filter reflects the publisher’s location or the event’s location.
The free plan provides 200 credits per day with a 12-hour delay. Because a credit may return up to 50 articles, model your pipeline using actual article counts and accepted-document rates. Paid archive depth and quota vary by tier, with reported options ranging from six months to up to ten years, so the plan choice should follow your replay requirement rather than the free allowance.

NewsAPI.ai/Event Registry: for historical events and complex research
NewsAPI.ai, also known as Event Registry, is the first option to evaluate when historical event analysis is central. The comparison reports more than 150,000 outlets and historical data extending to 2014. That range can support backtesting, event timelines, and investigations that need to reach beyond the recent-news window.
The free tier is described as 2,000 searches, and a published plan costs $90 per month for 5,000 searches. Historical work is token-based, so a wide date range, complex query, or expensive filter can consume more than a simple headline search. Estimate tokens with the exact query shapes you intend to run, including pagination and retries, before treating the monthly plan as a fixed per-article price.
For RAG, preserve the event, entity, and source metadata returned by the service when available. Those fields can support faceted retrieval and reduce the need to infer relationships from article text alone, but validate their consistency on your own topics before making them mandatory schema fields.
Mediastack: a lower-cost production candidate
Mediastack’s reported footprint is 7,500-plus sources in more than 50 countries and 13 languages. That is narrower than NewsData.io’s stated global coverage, but it may be sufficient for a product with a defined set of markets.

The free tier allows 100 calls per month and is delayed, making it mainly a learning or integration tier. The Standard plan is listed at $24.99 per month for 10,000 calls, with live and historical data and commercial use. For a small production service, compare this plan with GNews Essential using the same queries, article fields, and rights assumptions. The lower sticker price matters only if its source mix and article completeness meet your users’ needs.
NewsAPI.org: simple for tutorials, restricted for production on Developer
NewsAPI.org is familiar and straightforward for examples, classroom projects, and early integration tests. Its official pricing describes the Developer plan as “For development and testing of all project types.” That plan allows 100 requests per day, but articles are delayed by 24 hours and searches reach back only one month.
Those limits make Developer a poor fit for a live news agent or a durable historical index. The Business plan is listed at $449 per month for 250,000 requests, with real-time articles and five-year search, and is described as “For production and published commercial projects.” Treat the plan description as a licensing boundary: moving an application from a tutorial to a public product requires a corresponding rights review, not just a larger quota.
Alpha Vantage: finance-specific news and sentiment
Alpha Vantage belongs on a finance shortlist rather than a general-news shortlist. Its documentation covers market-news and sentiment data for stocks, cryptocurrencies, forex, fiscal policy, mergers and acquisitions, initial public offerings, and related financial subjects.

Recommendations by workload
Low-cost real-time production
Start a side-by-side evaluation of Mediastack Standard and GNews Essential. Both have a published paid path with live data, but their source geography, article completeness, and commercial terms differ. Use your target countries and alert latency as acceptance criteria, then compute the cost per accepted article rather than choosing solely on the monthly fee.
Global and multilingual monitoring
Prioritize NewsData.io because its stated coverage spans 206 countries and 89 languages. Validate the quality of each important language and country on representative queries; a large catalog is not a substitute for readable, timely results in the markets you serve.
Historical research and event analysis
Evaluate NewsAPI.ai/Event Registry first because its reported archive reaches back to 2014. Model token consumption by date range and query complexity, and compare the resulting cost with the archive window your project actually needs.

NewsAPI.org Developer is a familiar starting point when a 24-hour delay and one-month search window are acceptable. Keep the integration behind an abstraction layer so replacing the development feed with a production-licensed source does not require rewriting your agent or index.
Finance intelligence
Use Alpha Vantage when market-news sentiment and financial entities are more important than general-news breadth. Pair its domain-specific output with a general feed only if your product also needs non-financial reporting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A selection process that survives production
Step 1: Write the data contract
- Set the maximum acceptable publication-to-ingestion delay for each feature: alerts, conversational answers, daily digests, and historical analysis.
- List required countries, languages, source types, article fields, full-text expectations, and whether images or video metadata are needed.
- Define the retention period and whether raw articles, normalized fields, embeddings, generated summaries, or customer-visible excerpts will be stored.
- Record the commercial, persistent-storage, republication, and customer-facing-summary rights your legal or procurement team requires.
- Estimate monthly request volume, expected articles per response, pagination depth, retries, and the percentage of results you expect to reject.
Step 2: Build a representative evaluation set
Use real queries from the intended product, not only generic terms such as “technology.” Include breaking events, named entities, ambiguous terms, local spellings, non-English queries, and date-bounded searches. Keep the same query set for every provider so coverage and ranking differences are visible.
Step 3: Measure usable output
- Precision: the share of returned articles that answer the query.
- Duplicate rate: repeated canonical URLs, syndicated copies, and near-identical headlines.
- Latency: elapsed time from the provider’s publication timestamp to your successful ingestion.
- Completeness: presence of title, body or usable content, author, source, publication time, canonical URL, language, and country fields required by your schema.
- Cost: provider spend divided by accepted, indexable documents, including credits, tokens, pagination, and enrichment.
Step 4: Design the ingestion layer
- Save the raw provider response and the provider’s publication and retrieval timestamps.
- Normalize titles, authors, source names, language codes, country codes, canonical URLs, and content fields into a provider-neutral schema.
- Deduplicate first by canonical URL, then by title similarity and publication proximity when a canonical URL is missing or syndicated.
- Store the original source URL with every normalized record so an answer can identify where the information came from.
- Apply recency weighting during retrieval when the question concerns current events; use date filters and archive partitions for historical questions.
- Implement exponential backoff for transient failures, bounded retries, pagination checkpoints, and a dead-letter queue for malformed responses.
Step 5: Connect RAG and agents safely
Chunk only after removing boilerplate, navigation text, and duplicate syndication. Keep article-level metadata attached to every chunk so retrieval can filter by date, language, country, source, and entity before semantic ranking. For agents, expose narrow tools such as search-by-date, search-by-country, and fetch-article rather than a single unrestricted endpoint. Validate tool arguments, cap date ranges and page sizes, and log the provider query that produced each answer.
Step 6: Plan for provider changes
Keep provider-specific fields in a raw store and map them into a stable internal schema. Isolate authentication, pagination, rate-limit handling, and query syntax behind adapters. This lets you add a second feed for failover or regional coverage without changing prompts, retrieval code, or customer-facing APIs.

Common failure modes and fixes
A “real-time” agent answers with yesterday’s story
Check the plan’s delay, not just the API name. Free tiers from GNews and NewsData.io are reported with 12-hour delays, while NewsAPI.org Developer is reported with a 24-hour delay. Route breaking-news features to a plan that explicitly provides live or real-time data, and expose the article timestamp to the model so it can qualify stale evidence.
The index fills with copies
Normalize canonical URLs, compare title similarity, and group articles by publication time and source. Keep one representative document for retrieval while retaining source variants when provenance or regional wording matters.
Costs rise faster than traffic
Inspect the billing unit. A request may return several pages, a NewsData.io credit may return up to 50 articles, and NewsAPI.ai historical searches consume tokens. Log units consumed per query, rejected documents, retries, and accepted articles; then set per-user and per-agent query budgets.
Answers cannot be shown to customers
Revisit the plan’s rights for commercial use, persistent storage, republication, and generated summaries. A development allowance or a technically accessible endpoint does not establish permission to publish customer-facing results.
Country or language filters underperform
Test the exact markets with a fixed evaluation set. Compare source diversity, local-language readability, duplicate international coverage, and timestamp behavior. Select a provider only after it meets minimum quality thresholds for each important market, rather than relying on a global source-count claim.
A provider outage breaks retrieval
Cache normalized documents, queue failed requests, and maintain an adapter for a secondary feed. Keep raw responses so a backfill can be replayed after recovery without losing provider metadata.
Final decision framework
| Your priority | First API to evaluate | What to prove before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| AI-native JSON, RAG, and agent integration | GNews | Real-time latency, full-content availability, commercial rights, and accepted-article cost for your topics |
| Maximum stated country and language breadth | NewsData.io | Quality and freshness in each target market, plus credit consumption per accepted article |
| Long historical replay and event analysis | NewsAPI.ai/Event Registry | Token usage for your date ranges, filters, and query complexity |
| Lower-cost live production coverage | Mediastack | Whether its source mix and 10,000-call plan cover your geography and retention needs |
| Simple development integration | NewsAPI.org Developer | That delayed, one-month data and development-only terms are acceptable; otherwise budget for Business |
| Market-news sentiment and financial entities | Alpha Vantage | Entity and sentiment quality for the instruments, sectors, and policy topics your users follow |
There is no universal winner. GNews is the most natural first test for AI retrieval and agents; NewsData.io leads the stated global and multilingual footprint; NewsAPI.ai/Event Registry is the historical specialist; Mediastack is a cost-conscious live candidate; NewsAPI.org is best kept to appropriately licensed development or production tiers; and Alpha Vantage is the domain choice for finance. Make the final decision with a fixed query set, measured accepted-document cost, explicit rights, and a migration plan.
