For an AMD Radeon card, the best alternative depends on whether you need upscaling, frame generation, or both. Use AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) when you want a driver-level frame-generation layer that can work in games without native frame generation. Choose AMD FSR 3 or FSR 3.1 when the game includes it, because its frame-generation algorithm can use the game’s own motion data. Use FSR Upscaling, including supported FSR 4/Redstone modes, to render internally at a lower resolution and reconstruct a sharper output. If your GPU cannot run newer ML-powered features, a compatible Radeon upgrade such as the RX 9070 XT may be the practical answer.

No option wins every title. Your Radeon generation, current Adrenalin driver, game API, in-game implementation and starting frame rate determine the result. The sections below show what each path does, how to enable it and when combining technologies makes sense.

What you are replacing: upscaling and frame generation do different jobs

Upscaling and frame generation are often presented together, but they solve separate performance problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Upscaling reduces the rendering workload

An upscaler renders the game internally below the display resolution, then reconstructs a higher-resolution image. For example, a game running at a lower internal resolution can output to a 1440p or 4K display while spending fewer GPU resources on the original scene. Temporal upscalers use information from multiple frames, motion data and the current image to rebuild detail. Image quality depends on the game integration, motion vectors, reconstruction algorithm and chosen quality mode.

Frame generation inserts additional frames

Frame generation creates an extra image between traditionally rendered frames. It can make camera movement appear smoother and raise the displayed frame rate, but it does not replace the need for a responsive base frame rate. Input is still sampled from the traditionally rendered frames, so enabling frame generation on a very low base rate can make controls feel less responsive even when the on-screen counter is high.

In practice, a sensible order is to establish a stable base frame rate, enable an appropriate upscaling mode if the game needs it, and then add frame generation if latency and visual artifacts remain acceptable.

Quick comparison of the Radeon alternatives

Option How it operates Radeon requirement What it provides Image and artifact considerations Latency and base-rate considerations How you enable it
AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) Driver-level feature delivered through AMD Software: Adrenalin; the game does not need to integrate a new frame-generation SDK. Depends on the current driver, supported API path and supported GPU. AMD’s September 2024 testing used Radeon RX 7900 XTX, RX 7800 XT, RX 7600 XT and Radeon 890M systems with Adrenalin 24.9.1. Frame generation. It is not an upscaler. Because it operates outside the game’s renderer, it may have less game-specific motion information than an integrated solution. Results and artifact behavior vary by title and API. Needs a sufficiently high, stable traditionally rendered frame rate. Generated frames do not remove input latency from the base render. Turn it on in the relevant Gaming or Graphics controls in AMD Software: Adrenalin, then verify the game and API are supported by the installed driver.
FSR 3 / FSR 3.1 frame generation Game-integrated analytical frame generation. The developer implements the feature and supplies game motion data. AMD GPUOpen describes backward compatibility for RDNA 3.5, RDNA 3 and RDNA 2 architectures; the title must include an FSR 3.x implementation. Temporal super-resolution and frame generation, when the game exposes both options. Integration can provide better access to motion vectors and HUD handling than a generic driver layer, but quality still varies by implementation, scene and settings. AMD says supported games can deliver “up to 2x” frame rates. That is a vendor claim, not a guaranteed result; use a solid base rate before enabling it. Select FSR and frame-generation controls in the game’s graphics menu. Update the game and driver if the options are missing.
FSR Upscaling and FSR 4/Redstone Upscaling reconstructs a higher-resolution image. Newer Redstone/FSR SDK components add ML-powered features where the hardware and game support them. AMD’s current technology information identifies ML-powered FSR availability on selected Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 products. Exact eligibility is feature- and game-specific. Upscaling; supported versions may also expose newer frame-generation features. Use the version the game actually exposes. An older Radeon should not be assumed to support every FSR 4 or Redstone mode. Upscaling can raise the base rate before frame generation is applied. There is no single image-quality ranking that applies to every title. Choose the FSR version and quality preset in the game’s graphics settings, then confirm the GPU and driver meet that version’s requirements.
Radeon RX 9070 XT upgrade A hardware route to newer Radeon features rather than a software switch. RX 9000-series hardware; verify each game’s FSR 4/Redstone support separately. Provides the performance headroom for supported upscaling and frame-generation paths. Image quality still depends on the game and selected FSR implementation; a faster card does not eliminate reconstruction artifacts. More native rendering headroom can improve latency before generated frames are added. Install the card, update AMD Software: Adrenalin and select the features supported by the game.

AMD Fluid Motion Frames: the broadest driver-level alternative

AFMF is the most direct choice when a game has no native frame-generation option. AMD describes it as a frame-generation technology intended to increase frame rates and smoothness with minimal impact to image quality. It is delivered through AMD Software: Adrenalin, so the developer does not have to add a separate integration for every title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When AFMF makes sense

  • The game has no FSR 3.x or other native frame-generation control.
  • You want one driver-managed feature that can be applied across multiple supported games.
  • Your Radeon, driver and game API are within AMD’s current support matrix.

AFMF is not universal compatibility. Driver releases can change supported GPUs and API paths, and some games may show poor results or disable the feature. Check the release notes for the exact Adrenalin version installed rather than assuming that any Radeon card can use it.

How to enable AFMF

  1. Install the current AMD Software: Adrenalin package that supports your Radeon model.
  2. Open Adrenalin and go to the Gaming or Graphics section. The exact label can change between driver revisions.
  3. Enable AMD Fluid Motion Frames globally or create a per-game profile.
  4. Launch the game through the profile and confirm that its rendering API is supported by that driver release.
  5. Measure the traditionally rendered frame rate first. If it is unstable or very low, reduce demanding settings or use an in-game upscaler before judging AFMF.
  6. Move the camera through foliage, particles, fast pans and UI-heavy scenes. These are the situations in which interpolation errors are easiest to see.

AMD’s published September 2024 testing used Radeon RX 7900 XTX, RX 7800 XT, RX 7600 XT and Radeon 890M systems with Adrenalin 24.9.1. Those test systems demonstrate the families AMD evaluated at that time; they are not a promise that every model or future driver behaves identically.

FSR 3 and FSR 3.1: prefer native integration when the game offers it

FSR 3 combines temporal super-resolution with frame generation, while FSR 3.1 refines the integrated path in games that implement that version. AMD GPUOpen describes an analytical frame-generation approach with backward compatibility for RDNA 3.5, RDNA 3 and RDNA 2 architectures. The important limitation is that the game developer must implement the feature: a driver cannot add FSR 3 controls to a title that does not ship them.

Why native integration can be preferable

A game-integrated implementation can provide motion vectors, depth information and interface metadata directly from the renderer. That information can help the algorithm distinguish camera movement, character motion and static HUD elements. It does not guarantee artifact-free output, because implementation quality, scene complexity and patch level still matter, but it gives the algorithm more context than a generic external layer may have.

How to configure FSR 3.x

  1. Update the game to a version that lists FSR 3 or FSR 3.1 in its graphics options.
  2. Update the Radeon driver, then restart the game so the new shader and feature paths are loaded.
  3. Choose an FSR quality mode or render scale that produces a stable base frame rate at your target resolution.
  4. Enable the game’s frame-generation switch separately. Some titles expose upscaling and frame generation as independent controls.
  5. Use an in-game latency-reduction option when available, and cap the output rate if your display or synchronization setup requires it.
  6. Check fast motion, thin geometry, transparencies and menus before deciding whether the combination is acceptable.

AMD materials state that FSR 3 can deliver “up to 2x” frame rates in supported games. Treat that as an AMD vendor claim under specified workloads, not as a universal multiplier. Your result depends on resolution, quality preset, GPU, CPU limits, game patch and the base frame rate before generation.

FSR Upscaling, FSR 4 and Redstone: check the exact GPU and game

FSR Upscaling is the reconstruction part of the pipeline. It can be useful even when frame generation is unavailable: lowering internal resolution may recover enough GPU performance to make a demanding game playable while preserving more detail than a simple resolution reduction.

What changes with ML-powered versions

AMD’s current technology information identifies ML-powered FSR availability on selected Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 products. GPUOpen documentation for newer Redstone and FSR SDK components also defines hardware boundaries. “RX 7000 support” or “RX 9000 support” should therefore not be read as blanket support for every feature on every model. The game must expose the relevant version, and the installed driver must support it.

Practical guidance by Radeon generation

  • RX 9000 owners: check the title’s FSR version and AMD’s current support notes before enabling FSR 4 or Redstone features. A compatible card alone does not add support to a game that has not implemented it.
  • RX 7000 owners: use the FSR version the game explicitly supports and verify whether the specific ML-powered feature is listed for your model.
  • Older Radeon owners: select the FSR option exposed by the game or driver rather than assuming that newer ML-powered modes are available.

Use the least aggressive quality mode that meets your target. Extremely low internal resolutions can produce shimmering, breakup around fine geometry or unstable detail even when the performance counter improves.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can you combine upscaling and frame generation?

Yes, when the game and driver support the required combination. They are complementary stages: upscaling reduces the cost of producing each traditionally rendered frame, and frame generation inserts additional frames between those results.

Native FSR combination

A game with FSR 3.x commonly exposes an upscaling control and a separate frame-generation control. Enable upscaling first, establish a stable base rate, then test frame generation. If the base rate is already high enough without upscaling, native rendering may provide cleaner detail and lower processing latency.

Driver-level AFMF with an in-game upscaler

AFMF can potentially be used alongside an in-game upscaler because one feature generates frames and the other changes the internal render resolution. Compatibility depends on the current driver, API path and title. Use a per-game profile, test menus and rapid motion, and turn the combination off if artifacts or inconsistent pacing outweigh the smoothness benefit.

What the combination cannot do

  • It cannot create the responsiveness of a high native base frame rate from a very low one.
  • It cannot guarantee that HUD elements, particles or transparencies will interpolate cleanly.
  • It cannot make an unsupported FSR 4/Redstone feature work on an ineligible GPU.

When a hardware upgrade is the better alternative

If your current Radeon cannot access the FSR features you want, software settings may have reached their limit. AMD announced the Radeon RX 9070 XT on February 28, 2025, with a suggested launch price of $599 and positioning around FSR 4, frame generation and Radeon Anti-Lag. That $599 figure is a launch suggested price, not a current street-price guarantee; availability and pricing change.

An RX 9070 XT can provide more rendering headroom before any generated frames are added, which is valuable for latency as well as image quality. It does not automatically enable every newer feature in every game. Confirm the game’s supported FSR version, the card’s current driver and your monitor’s target resolution before buying.

Upgrade checklist

  • Confirm your power supply, case clearance, display connectors and cooling capacity.
  • Check whether your target games list FSR 4, Redstone or another native frame-generation path.
  • Compare the card’s expected native performance with the performance after upscaling; do not evaluate it only by a generated-frame counter.
  • Use current pricing rather than the February 2025 launch suggestion when calculating value.

Performance, latency and image-quality expectations

Start with the base frame rate

Frame generation is most convincing when the traditionally rendered frame rate is already stable. A fluctuating base rate can lead to uneven frame delivery, and a low base rate leaves each generated frame farther apart in time from meaningful input updates. Establish a cap or quality setting that keeps the base rate consistent before comparing modes.

Interpret vendor figures correctly

AMD reported an example 4.7x FPS increase for FSR Frame Generation on an RX 9070 XT test configuration in a 2026 technical article. That is a vendor test result for that configuration and workload, not a universal benchmark. Likewise, the “up to 2x” FSR 3 figure is an AMD claim for supported games. Neither number predicts your exact result at a different resolution, preset or CPU limit.

Latency and visual artifacts are title-specific

No independent cross-platform latency or image-quality statistic establishes a universal ranking among AFMF, FSR 3.x and newer FSR modes. Compare them in the game you actually play. Watch for ghosting behind moving objects, broken thin lines, flickering foliage, UI distortion and uneven frame pacing. Evaluate input response separately from the displayed frame-rate number.

Common problems and fixes

The option is missing

  • Update the game and AMD Software: Adrenalin.
  • Confirm the exact Radeon model and supported API path for the driver version.
  • For FSR 3.x, verify that the developer implemented the feature; a driver update cannot add a missing in-game option.
  • For FSR 4 or Redstone, check the specific GPU and game support rather than relying on the Radeon family name alone.

The counter rises but the game feels sluggish

Disable frame generation temporarily and compare input response at the base frame rate. Reduce settings that limit the traditionally rendered rate, use a sensible upscaling mode, and enable an available latency-reduction feature. A higher displayed rate does not remove the latency of the frames used as input to generation.

Ghosting or broken objects appear

Test a different FSR quality mode, reduce aggressive sharpening, update the game, and compare native rendering with AFMF disabled. If the problem appears only with AFMF, use the game’s native FSR 3.x implementation when available. If it appears only in one title, report it to that game’s developer because integration details control motion-vector and UI handling.

Frame pacing is uneven

Check whether the base frame rate is fluctuating, whether the game is CPU-limited, and whether a frame-rate cap or synchronization setting is conflicting with the generated output. Test one technology at a time so you can identify which layer changes pacing.

Choosing the right path

  • Choose AFMF for a supported game without native frame generation, provided your driver and API are supported and your base frame rate is already healthy.
  • Choose FSR 3 or FSR 3.1 when the game exposes it. Native integration is usually the most informative path because the algorithm receives game-renderer data.
  • Choose FSR Upscaling when you need more GPU headroom but do not need generated frames. Add frame generation only after the base rate is stable.
  • Choose FSR 4 or Redstone only after verifying the exact Radeon model, driver and game support.
  • Choose an RX 9070 XT upgrade when your current card lacks the required feature or cannot maintain the base performance you need. Treat the $599 February 2025 launch suggestion as historical context, not a current price.

The practical answer is therefore game-specific: native FSR 3.x is the first software choice when available, AFMF is the flexible driver-level alternative, and newer FSR features require explicit hardware and title support. Test with the same resolution, quality preset and frame-rate cap you actually intend to use, and judge responsiveness and artifacts alongside the frame-rate counter.
