No PS5 network setting can officially enable Xbox Cloud Gaming. Microsoft’s supported-device information does not list PlayStation 5, so changing DNS, Wi-Fi bands, bandwidth or router settings cannot turn the PS5 into a supported Xbox Cloud Gaming device.

If you are using Xbox Cloud Gaming on a supported device, Microsoft’s guidance is a 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection or, preferably, wired Ethernet, with 20 Mbps for best performance on consoles, PCs and tablets. If your goal is cloud gaming directly on a PS5, use Sony’s separate PlayStation Plus Premium Cloud Streaming service instead.

The compatibility answer comes first

Xbox Cloud Gaming is a service delivered to specific supported device categories. Microsoft’s official Xbox Cloud Gaming page does not include PS5 in those categories. That means there is no PS5 menu option, router adjustment or connection speed that can be described as an official method for running Xbox Cloud Gaming on the console.

This distinction matters because network advice can sound promising while solving the wrong problem. A faster connection can improve streaming on a supported device, but it cannot add Xbox service support to a PlayStation console. A wired cable, a 5 GHz network, a different DNS server and a faster broadband package all affect network conditions only; none changes the platform requirement.

Microsoft’s published guidance also does not establish a PS5 browser workaround or another supported route. If a method is not listed by Microsoft as a supported device path, treat it as unofficial and potentially unreliable rather than as a network setting.

What Microsoft recommends for Xbox Cloud Gaming on supported devices

The following settings apply when Xbox Cloud Gaming is being used on a device Microsoft supports, such as a compatible console, PC, tablet or mobile device. They are useful for understanding the network side of cloud gaming, but they do not make Xbox Cloud Gaming compatible with PS5.

Use Ethernet whenever it is practical

Xbox Wire’s December 19, 2025, setup guidance recommends a wired Ethernet connection where possible. A cable avoids the radio link between the device and the router, so it removes one variable from the connection. This is especially useful when the router is near the supported gaming device and running a cable is convenient.

Ethernet is a connection recommendation, not a compatibility fix. Connecting a PS5 by cable still leaves it outside Microsoft’s listed Xbox Cloud Gaming device support.

  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Choose 5 GHz Wi-Fi when a cable is not practical

Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming page identifies 5 GHz Wi-Fi as a best-performance connection option. On a dual-band router, the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks may appear as separate names, or the router may automatically select a band. Confirm that the supported device is actually connected to 5 GHz rather than assuming that a dual-band router has made the choice for you.

Use 5 GHz when the device is reasonably close to the router. A 5 GHz signal generally covers less distance and passes through walls less effectively than 2.4 GHz, so an unstable 5 GHz signal is not automatically better than a strong, consistent alternative. The objective is a steady connection, not a particular label on the network.

Meet the published bandwidth guidance

Microsoft states that best performance is achieved at 10 Mbps on mobile devices and 20 Mbps on consoles, PCs and tablets. Xbox Wire also describes 20 Mbps as a recommended stable cloud-gaming connection. These are Microsoft’s service figures for the relevant device categories, not requirements for a PS5 running Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Xbox Cloud Gaming device category Published rate How to interpret it
Mobile devices 10 Mbps Microsoft’s stated best-performance rate for mobile devices.
Consoles, PCs and tablets 20 Mbps Microsoft’s stated best-performance rate for these categories; Xbox Wire also presents 20 Mbps as a stable-connection recommendation.

These figures describe available connection speed, not a guarantee of image quality or input response. Microsoft notes that performance can also depend on the connection itself, the user’s location, the device and other factors. A speed test showing 20 Mbps at one moment does not prove that the connection will remain steady during a session.

Access still depends on eligibility

Network quality is only one part of Xbox Cloud Gaming access. Microsoft’s current service information describes subscription and free-to-play access routes for supported devices. The account, game and regional eligibility rules can change independently of your broadband connection, so confirm that the title and account are eligible before treating a network problem as the cause of a missing game or unavailable session.

Why a faster PS5 connection does not change the result

It is useful to separate three different questions:

  • Can the device use the service? Microsoft’s listed Xbox Cloud Gaming device categories do not include PS5.
  • Is the connection fast and stable enough? Microsoft publishes 5 GHz or wired guidance and a 20 Mbps best-performance figure for consoles, PCs and tablets.
  • Is the account or game eligible? Xbox Cloud Gaming access can depend on the applicable subscription, free-to-play status and other service conditions.

Only the second question is controlled by Ethernet, Wi-Fi band and broadband speed. Improving it cannot answer the first question in the affirmative. If your only gaming hardware is a PS5, spending money on a faster plan or a network accessory specifically to obtain Xbox Cloud Gaming will not solve the platform limitation.

Sony states that a broadband connection must provide at least 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download to establish a cloud-streaming session on PS5. It also publishes higher recommendations for specific output resolutions.

PS5 Cloud Streaming target Sony’s published recommendation What the number represents
Establishing a session At least 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download Minimum stated by Sony to start a streaming session.
1080p 23 Mbps Sony’s recommended connection speed for 1080p streaming.
1440p 38 Mbps Sony’s recommended connection speed for 1440p streaming.
2160p 52 Mbps Sony’s recommended connection speed for 2160p streaming.

Do not substitute these PlayStation figures for Microsoft’s Xbox figures. Each service publishes numbers for its own streaming system, and neither set of numbers establishes compatibility with the other company’s platform.

Best PS5 network setup for Sony’s cloud streaming

If the actual goal is to stream games on the PS5 itself, use this order of operations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the service path. Make sure you are using PlayStation Plus Premium Cloud Streaming and an eligible game. Xbox Cloud Gaming support cannot be added through the PS5’s network menus.
  2. Run the PS5 connection test. On the console, open Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. Menu wording can change with system software updates. Check both download and upload results rather than looking only at download speed.
  3. Compare the result with the intended resolution. A result below 5 Mbps in either direction is below Sony’s stated session minimum. For higher output, compare the measured rate with 23 Mbps for 1080p, 38 Mbps for 1440p or 52 Mbps for 2160p.
  4. Use Ethernet if possible. Connect the PS5 directly to the router with a network cable when the layout allows it. This follows the same general wired-first principle recommended by Xbox Wire for cloud gaming, while serving Sony’s separate PS5 streaming service here.
  5. Select 5 GHz when using Wi-Fi. If the router exposes separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, join the 5 GHz network when the PS5 is close enough to maintain a strong signal. If the 5 GHz connection is unstable at the console’s location, move the router or console, use a wired connection or choose the more reliable available band.
  6. Retest after changes. Run the PS5 connection test again after changing the cable, Wi-Fi band or router location. Compare the new result with the service’s requirement and the resolution you want to use.

How to diagnose a poor cloud-streaming session

The Xbox service does not appear on PS5

This is a platform-support issue, not a bandwidth issue. Check Microsoft’s supported-device information rather than changing router settings repeatedly. Use Xbox Cloud Gaming on a listed device, or use Sony’s PS5 Cloud Streaming service if you want to play through the PS5.

The PS5 cannot establish a Sony streaming session

Run the PS5 connection test and check upload as well as download. Sony’s stated minimum is 5 Mbps in each direction. If either direction is below that figure, improve the connection or reduce competing use of the network before trying again. Also verify that your PlayStation Plus Premium account and the selected game are eligible.

The session starts but the picture is unstable

First determine whether the PS5 is connected by Ethernet, 5 GHz Wi-Fi or 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. If you are on Wi-Fi, test 5 GHz when the console is near the router, and retest after moving the router or removing obstacles. If a wired link is available, use it to remove wireless variability. A one-time speed result above the recommended number does not guarantee a consistent stream, because service performance also depends on connection conditions, location and device factors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1080p works but a higher resolution does not

Compare the connection result with Sony’s resolution-specific guidance rather than the 5 Mbps session minimum. The minimum allows a session to be established; it is not Sony’s recommendation for 1080p, 1440p or 2160p output. If the connection is below 38 Mbps, for example, it does not meet Sony’s published 1440p recommendation even if it is well above 5 Mbps.

Wi-Fi speed changes from one test to another

Check whether the console is switching between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, whether the router is far from the PS5 and whether other household devices are using the connection at the same time. Where practical, use Ethernet. If Ethernet is not possible, place the router and PS5 so that the 5 GHz signal remains reliable, then repeat the test under the same household conditions in which you normally play.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing bandwidth with support: 20 Mbps is Microsoft’s published best-performance figure for supported consoles, PCs and tablets, not a PS5 activation requirement.
  • Using the wrong service’s number: Sony’s 23, 38 and 52 Mbps recommendations apply to PS5 Cloud Streaming, not Xbox Cloud Gaming.
  • Checking download only: Sony specifies both upload and download for establishing a PS5 streaming session.
  • Assuming 5 GHz is always better: A weak or unstable 5 GHz signal can perform worse than a dependable connection. Test the actual link at the console.
  • Buying a cable to solve compatibility: Ethernet can improve a supported streaming setup, but it cannot add Xbox Cloud Gaming support to PS5.
  • Treating a speed-test peak as a guarantee: Microsoft says performance also depends on factors such as the connection, location and device.
  • Ignoring account and game eligibility: A good network cannot make an ineligible title or account streamable.

A practical decision checklist

  1. If you specifically want Xbox Cloud Gaming, move the session to a device Microsoft lists as supported.
  2. On that supported device, prefer Ethernet; otherwise use 5 GHz Wi-Fi when it is stable.
  3. Use Microsoft’s 20 Mbps best-performance guidance for consoles, PCs and tablets as a connection target, not as a guarantee.
  4. If you want to stream directly on PS5, use PlayStation Plus Premium Cloud Streaming and an eligible game.
  5. For PS5 streaming, verify at least 5 Mbps upload and download, then compare your connection with the 23, 38 or 52 Mbps recommendation for the desired resolution.
  6. Retest after changing the connection method, and distinguish a network symptom from a platform-support or account-eligibility problem.

What may change

Device support, eligible games, regions, subscription terms and recommended settings are live service details. Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming page, Xbox Wire guidance dated December 19, 2025, and Sony’s PS5 cloud-streaming information can be updated. Recheck the relevant service’s current support and eligibility pages when setting up a new device or revisiting the service after an update.

Bottom line

The best network settings for Xbox Cloud Gaming are wired Ethernet where practical, otherwise stable 5 GHz Wi-Fi, with Microsoft’s 20 Mbps best-performance guidance for supported consoles, PCs and tablets. Those settings can smooth Xbox Cloud Gaming on a supported device, but they cannot make Xbox Cloud Gaming officially work on PS5. For cloud gaming on the PS5 itself, use Sony’s PlayStation Plus Premium Cloud Streaming and follow its separate upload, download and resolution recommendations.
