No single service replaces every Netflix use. Choose Max for HBO, Warner Bros., DC and prestige films; Prime Video for a broad included catalog plus rentals and purchases; Disney+ for family and franchise viewing; Hulu for current-season television; Apple TV+ for a smaller originals-first slate; Paramount+ for CBS, Showtime-related programming and selected sports; Peacock for NBC, Bravo and selected live events; or Tubi for free, ad-supported viewing. If you want to replace cable rather than Netflix, YouTube TV is the clearest fit, with 100+ channels and unlimited DVR in the United States.

The right combination depends on the shows, films, sports and local channels you actually watch. Catalogs, prices and regional rights change, so use the comparison below as a starting point and check the service’s checkout page and a title-availability guide before paying.

Choose by what you watch most

  • Prestige dramas and major studio films: Max is the closest specialist alternative for HBO programming, Warner Bros. releases, DC titles and A24-style films and series.
  • The widest mix in one storefront: Prime Video combines an included subscription catalog with separate rentals and purchases, so a title can remain available even when it is not included.
  • Family viewing and major franchises: Disney+ centers on Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic.
  • Current-season broadcast television: Hulu is the most direct choice where its local rights apply. Hulu’s regular on-demand library is different from Hulu + Live TV.
  • High-quality originals without a huge library: Apple TV+ concentrates on a smaller slate of exclusive series and films.
  • CBS, Showtime-related programs and selected sports: Paramount+ is the relevant fit.
  • NBC, Bravo, a large NBCUniversal library and selected live events: Peacock is the specialist option.
  • Lowest possible monthly cost: Tubi offers movies and shows free with advertising.
  • Live channels, news, local stations and sports: YouTube TV is the strongest cable-replacement candidate in this group. Its local lineup depends on your ZIP code.

What a Netflix alternative can—and cannot—replace

On-demand catalog breadth

Netflix is often used as a general-purpose library: a household may expect one subscription to provide new originals, older films, children’s programs and several genres. The alternatives divide those jobs among different catalogs. Prime Video supplies breadth, but part of its storefront is paid separately. Max is narrower than a general-purpose service yet unusually strong in prestige television and studio films. Disney+ is narrower still, but its franchise depth is difficult to duplicate elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Original series

Apple TV+ is built around originals rather than a huge back catalog, making it attractive if you prefer a concentrated premium lineup and do not want to browse thousands of titles. Max, Paramount+, Peacock and Hulu also have originals, but their practical value often comes from the combination of originals with a recognizable parent-company library or current television rights.

Current-season television

Hulu’s on-demand service is designed around current-season television where it has rights. Availability varies by market and program. A regular Hulu subscription should not be confused with Hulu + Live TV, which is a separate live-channel product that can include Hulu’s on-demand catalog and ESPN options through bundles.

Live channels and local coverage

Most on-demand services are not cable replacements. They may carry a live news feed, a simulcast or a special event, but they do not provide a full local-channel lineup. YouTube TV is explicitly a live-TV service: its main U.S. plan lists more than 100 channels, local networks, live sports and news, unlimited DVR, six household accounts and three simultaneous streams. The exact local stations and some channel groups depend on the ZIP code entered during signup.

Netflix alternatives compared

The table separates what each service is best at from features that are not established consistently across regions. “Not stated” means you should confirm the current plan page rather than assume that a feature or price is universal.

Detailed guide to each on-demand service

Max: the prestige-TV and studio-film choice

Choose Max when your priority is HBO programming, Warner Bros. films, DC, or sophisticated drama and comedy. It is also a good substitute for the part of Netflix that viewers use for acclaimed movies rather than for sheer volume. Its limitation is focus: it is not intended to supply local channels or a complete current-season broadcast schedule.

  • The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
  • No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
  • Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.

Check whether the title you want is included in your chosen tier and whether the film or series is available in your country. Rights can change independently of the service’s overall identity.

Prime Video: the flexible storefront

Prime Video works well for households that dislike discovering a film is unavailable after subscribing. Its included catalog sits beside rentals and purchases, allowing you to pay for an individual title without adding another monthly service. That flexibility can reduce subscriptions for occasional viewers, although frequent rentals can cost more than a focused subscription.

When comparing it with Netflix, separate “included with the subscription” from “available to rent or buy.” They are different economic propositions.

Disney+: the family and franchise hub

Disney+ is the clearest match for Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic viewing. Families that repeatedly watch those franchises may get more value from Disney+ than from a broader service whose children’s or franchise catalog changes more often. Viewers seeking unrelated adult dramas or a wide selection of independent films may need a second service.

Hulu: current television and bundle flexibility

Hulu’s distinctive role is access to current-season television where rights apply. It also appears in bundles with Disney+ and in Hulu + Live TV packages. Treat the regular on-demand product and Hulu + Live TV as separate choices: the latter adds live channels and sports options, while the former is primarily a library and current-TV service.

Apple TV+: a concentrated originals slate

Apple TV+ suits viewers who would rather finish a small number of highly promoted originals than browse a very large catalog. It is less useful as a sole replacement if your household expects a deep archive of older films, current broadcast episodes or local news.

Paramount+: CBS, franchises and selected sports

Paramount+ is worth considering when CBS programming, Showtime-related shows, or its recognizable franchises are central to your viewing. Selected sports add value for some subscribers, but the service should not be treated as a universal local-TV or sports replacement without checking the event and your market.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Peacock: NBCUniversal library and events

Peacock combines NBC and Bravo programming with NBCUniversal library titles and selected live events and sports. It can complement another service when your household follows those networks, but its live and sports rights are event-specific rather than a complete cable lineup.

Tubi: the no-subscription option

Tubi removes the monthly bill in exchange for advertising. It is a practical first stop for budget-first viewers, a backup when a paid subscription expires, or a way to watch catalog films without adding another recurring charge. Expect a rotating selection and commercial breaks rather than the same release cadence as paid services.

Best choices for live TV, sports and local channels

YouTube TV for a cable replacement

YouTube TV’s main U.S. plan costs $82.99 per month according to its 2026 listing. It includes more than 100 channels, local networks, live sports and news, unlimited DVR, six household accounts and three simultaneous streams. The service is available in the United States, but the local-channel lineup varies by ZIP code.

  1. Enter your ZIP code on the YouTube TV plan page before subscribing.
  2. Confirm that the local ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC or other station you need appears in the lineup.
  3. Check the sports channels and events for your teams; “sports included” does not mean every league or game is available.
  4. Review the number of people who will watch at once. The listed plan supports three simultaneous streams.
  5. Use the unlimited DVR for programs you cannot watch live, while remembering that the recording is tied to the service and its rights.

Hulu + Live TV when Hulu and live channels belong together

Hulu + Live TV is a distinct product from regular Hulu. It is useful when you want Hulu’s on-demand programming alongside live channels and ESPN options available through the package you select. Confirm the channel list and regional stations during checkout; do not infer them from the regular Hulu catalog.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When Paramount+ or Peacock is enough

Paramount+ and Peacock can cover selected live events, sports or network programming, but neither is presented here as a full cable substitute. Choose them for a particular network or event, then verify the exact broadcast rights and date.

Current U.S. bundle prices and how to read them

These prices were listed for the U.S. market in 2026. They are volatile, and the first Disney+ figure is introductory rather than a permanent rate.

Bundle or plan Advertised monthly price What the price means
Disney+ and Hulu $11.99/month for six months, then $12.99/month Introductory offer; verify eligibility and renewal terms at checkout
Disney+, Hulu and Max with ads $21.99/month Ad-supported bundle price listed for 2026
Disney+, Hulu and Max without ads $34.99/month Premium bundle price listed for 2026
Disney+, Hulu and ESPN Unlimited with ads $35.99/month Ad-supported bundle price listed for 2026
Disney+, Hulu and ESPN Unlimited premium $44.99/month Premium bundle price listed for 2026
YouTube TV main plan $82.99/month U.S. live-TV plan with 100+ channels and unlimited DVR; annual price not stated

Annual prices for the services in this table were not stated. Do not multiply a promotional monthly price by 12 and assume that is your renewal cost. Compare the post-promotion rate, taxes where applicable, simultaneous-stream limits and whether the bundle’s ad tier meets your household’s expectations.

How to select the cheapest combination that still works

  1. List must-have titles and channels. Write down five to ten films or series, plus any local stations, leagues or news channels. A service is only a replacement if it carries the content you actually watch.
  2. Separate occasional from weekly viewing. Use rentals through Prime Video or free Tubi viewing for one-off films; reserve recurring subscriptions for programs you watch repeatedly.
  3. Check availability before subscribing. Search each title in JustWatch, which can filter by service, price, genre, release date and popularity. Availability changes, so confirm the result on the service itself.
  4. Compare a bundle with separate subscriptions. The Disney+ and Hulu introductory offer is $11.99 per month for six months, then $12.99. The Max bundles cost $21.99 with ads or $34.99 without ads. Include the renewal rate in your calculation.
  5. Use one service at a time when rights allow. If a series is a short-term priority, subscribe for a month, finish it, then cancel before the next billing date. Keep a note of the cancellation deadline.
  6. Choose live TV only when you need live TV. At $82.99 per month, YouTube TV costs substantially more than a single on-demand service, but it replaces a different product: a live channel package with DVR and local networks.

Getting the services onto an older television

If your television lacks one of the required apps, a streaming stick is usually simpler than replacing the set. Tom’s Guide’s October 2026 streaming-device roundup identifies the Roku Streaming Stick Plus as a leading device for watching Netflix, Prime Video and other services on a living-room TV. Check the current retailer listing, included remote features and supported video formats before purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Plug the stick into an available HDMI port and connect its power cable.
  2. Switch the television to that HDMI input and complete the device’s network setup.
  3. Install only the apps for services you intend to use; this keeps the home screen manageable.
  4. Sign in directly on the TV or use the activation method shown by the app.
  5. Test playback, subtitles, audio and picture quality with a title you know before cancelling another service.

Device support, 4K/HDR availability and download features vary by service, plan, title and region. A compatible television alone does not guarantee that every film is offered in 4K or HDR.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Assuming a bundle includes every channel: Disney bundles combine on-demand services; they are not automatically live-TV packages. YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV are the products to inspect for channel coverage.
  • Confusing a service with a storefront: Prime Video rentals and purchases are not the same as titles included with the subscription.
  • Ignoring ZIP-code rights: YouTube TV local stations vary by ZIP code. Check your address before paying.
  • Comparing an introductory price with a permanent one: Disney+ and Hulu’s $11.99 rate lasts six months, then becomes $12.99 per month.
  • Expecting one service to cover every genre: Max, Disney+, Hulu and the other specialists have different catalog purposes. A free service or a short-term second subscription may be more economical than forcing one catalog to do everything.
  • Forgetting advertisements: Tubi is free because it is ad-supported. Disney bundles have ad and premium tiers, and live channels carry their own commercial schedules.
  • Waiting to verify a title: Licensing changes can remove a film or episode after you subscribe. Check the title immediately before starting a new billing cycle.

A practical decision rule

Start with the content that would make you cancel Netflix if it disappeared. If that list is HBO or Warner Bros. programming, choose Max. If it is Disney, Pixar, Marvel or Star Wars, choose Disney+. If it is current broadcast television, choose Hulu or evaluate Hulu + Live TV. If it is local stations, news and sports, check YouTube TV’s ZIP-code lineup. For a small premium-originals slate, choose Apple TV+; for CBS or Showtime-related viewing, Paramount+; for NBC and Bravo, Peacock; and for a zero-subscription budget, Tubi. Prime Video is the flexible middle ground when included titles, rentals and purchases all matter.

Recheck the catalog and the checkout total at the moment you subscribe. That final verification matters more than a service’s general reputation because regional rights, tiers and promotional prices change.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
