There is not enough verified evidence for a trustworthy list of five current, exactly 40-inch 4K televisions. The closest documented choices are 42-inch 4K OLED models, notably LG’s 2026 OLED42C6PUA and the previous-year OLED42C5AUA. They are not 40-inch sets, so this guide keeps the size distinction explicit while showing how to choose a compact 4K TV without confusing “near 40 inches” with an exact 40-inch diagonal.

If your cabinet or viewing distance demands an exact 40-inch panel, measure the available width and verify the diagonal and resolution on the retailer’s specification sheet before paying. If a 42-inch screen fits, the two OLED models below are the verified adjacent-size examples available for comparison.

Why a five-model 40-inch list would be misleading

The phrase “40-inch 4K TV” sounds precise, but television sizes are commonly grouped into nearby classes. Small-TV buying coverage often discusses 40-, 42- and 43-inch screens together, while manufacturers may describe a product as “42-inch class.” That grouping is useful for shopping, but it does not turn a 42-inch television into a 40-inch one.

The available manufacturer evidence identifies two current or recent 42-inch 4K OLED televisions, not five verified exact-40-inch models. No market-wide statistic establishes how many exact 40-inch 4K sets are currently sold, and no evidence here supports ranking five models as “best.” A careful purchase therefore starts with a choice between an exact-size requirement and a near-size alternative.

Choose an exact 40-inch set when space is non-negotiable

  • Measure the cabinet opening, not just the diagonal. The bezel, stand and cable bend can require more width and depth than the panel itself.
  • Confirm that the listing says both 40-inch diagonal and 4K resolution. “40-inch class,” “UHD,” or “near 40 inches” can describe something different.
  • Check the local retailer’s inventory and return policy. Availability is geography-dependent, and the evidence available for this guide does not establish a global inventory.

Consider 42 inches when you want the strongest verified compact option

A 42-inch screen is only modestly larger than 40 inches, but the extra diagonal can matter in a tight room. The two documented models use OLED panels, support 4K, and list modern gaming features. They should be treated as adjacent-size alternatives rather than exact matches.

LG’s March 5, 2026 announcement states: “The LG OLED evo C6 TV is available in six screen sizes (42/48/55/65/77/83-inch) and has an MSRP starting at $1,399.” For this article, the relevant figure is the 42-inch launch MSRP, not a promise that the television still sells for that amount.

All specifications in the table are manufacturer-listed specifications. They do not substitute for independent measurements of brightness, color accuracy, input lag, upscaling quality or long-term panel behavior. No independent comparative test result was established for either model here.

LG OLED42C6PUA: what the 2026 model establishes

The OLED42C6PUA is the clearest documented match for a compact 4K buyer who can accept 42 inches. LG identifies it as a 42-inch-class 4K OLED smart television. The listed features include Dolby Vision for compatible HDR video, Dolby Atmos support, and a refresh rate of up to 165Hz. LG also lists 4K at 165Hz with variable refresh rate (VRR) for the C6 range.

Who should consider it

  • PC and console players: the 165Hz ceiling and VRR specification are relevant if the source device and connection can deliver compatible signals.
  • Film and streaming viewers: Dolby Vision support can be useful with services and discs that provide that format; the source must actually carry Dolby Vision data.
  • Small-room buyers: the 42-inch class is among the smallest sizes documented for this current OLED line.

What the $1,399 figure means

The $1,399 amount is a launch MSRP announced by LG on March 5, 2026. It is neither an independent value assessment nor a current sale quote. Retail pricing can change, and regional stock can differ. Compare the dated manufacturer MSRP with the checkout price, delivery fees, warranty terms and return window offered where you live.

LG OLED42C5AUA: when the previous-year model makes sense

The OLED42C5AUA is LG’s previous-year 42-inch-class 4K OLED example. LG lists Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and a 144Hz refresh rate. Those are manufacturer specifications; the available evidence does not establish its current price, remaining stock or a measured performance advantage over the C6.

Questions to ask before buying the C5A

  • Is the television genuinely new, or is it open-box, refurbished or clearance stock?
  • What warranty applies in your country, and who handles a panel fault?
  • Is the discount large enough to justify choosing the older 144Hz specification rather than the newer model’s listed 165Hz capability?
  • Does the seller provide a straightforward return period if the set does not fit your furniture or has unacceptable uniformity?

Without a verified live price, there is no defensible universal rule that the C5A is the better bargain. Make that decision from the actual dated offer in front of you, not from the model year alone.

How to interpret the specifications

Diagonal size and physical fit

Screen size is measured diagonally. A 42-inch-class television can have a noticeably different cabinet width, stand position and depth from another 42-inch model. Before ordering, record the opening’s width, height and depth; then add clearance for ventilation, power and signal cables. If the television will sit on furniture, measure the distance between stand feet as well as the outer dimensions.

4K resolution

4K indicates a 3,840-by-2,160 pixel UHD image in the television’s native panel. It does not guarantee that every program appears in 4K. Broadcast channels, older films, game consoles and streaming plans may supply 1080p, 720p or lower-resolution material. A compact 4K set still needs to scale those signals to the panel’s native resolution.

OLED

OLED is the display technology used by both verified 42-inch examples. Each pixel produces its own light, which is why OLED specifications are commonly associated with deep blacks and strong contrast. Those advantages do not prove a particular model’s brightness, uniformity or durability; such characteristics require independent testing or a generous return policy.

Refresh rate and VRR

Refresh rate describes how often the panel can update the image under supported conditions. The C6 lists up to 165Hz, while the C5A lists 144Hz. VRR synchronizes display updates with a compatible game source to reduce tearing when frame rates fluctuate. The number on the box is only useful if your console or computer, cable, input mode and game output support the same signal. Do not assume that every HDMI source will run at the maximum listed rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos

Dolby Vision is an HDR video format; Dolby Atmos is an object-based audio format. A television can list support for either format, but the program, streaming service, disc player and audio path must also provide it. Built-in television speakers and an external sound system can produce different results, so treat format support as compatibility information rather than a guarantee of sound quality.

Handling lower-resolution sources

A small 4K television may display a mixture of modern and legacy material: HD broadcasts, older game consoles, DVDs, compressed streams and user-generated video. The panel’s 4K count does not tell you how cleanly those sources will look. Ask the retailer whether the set accepts your source resolutions and whether picture modes can be adjusted independently for them.

Before you buy

  1. List every source device and its output resolution, frame rate and HDR format.
  2. Check that the television accepts those signals through the inputs you plan to use.
  3. Bring a familiar HD clip or game when viewing a display in person, if the retailer permits it.
  4. Confirm that the seller’s return policy covers dissatisfaction with scaling, motion or panel uniformity.

When comparing two televisions, use the same source, cable and picture mode. Otherwise, a different stream or processing preset can make a display appear better or worse for reasons unrelated to the panel.

Gaming guidance for a compact 4K setup

The C6’s listed 165Hz capability is most relevant to a gaming PC that can render above 120 frames per second. A console may output a lower maximum frame rate, so the practical benefit depends on the console generation and game. VRR can help when frame delivery varies, but it must be enabled on both the source and television and used with a compatible input mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this compatibility checklist

  • Confirm the source device can output 4K at the desired refresh rate.
  • Use a cable rated for the signal bandwidth required by that mode.
  • Enable the television’s game or low-latency mode if the manufacturer provides one.
  • Turn on VRR in both the source settings and the television menu, then test a game with changing frame rates.
  • Check whether HDR, VRR and the highest refresh rate can operate together on your chosen input; do not infer this combination from one specification line.

Buying and setup procedure

  1. Measure first: write down the maximum cabinet width, height and depth, plus stand-foot spacing and cable clearance.
  2. Decide the size boundary: reject 42-inch products if an exact 40-inch diagonal is mandatory; otherwise mark 42 inches as an accepted adjacent size.
  3. Verify the listing: confirm the full model number, diagonal class, native 4K resolution and whether the unit is new, refurbished or open-box.
  4. Record the price date: save the checkout total and warranty terms. Keep the C6’s $1,399 launch MSRP separate from any current offer.
  5. Match your sources: check resolution, HDR, audio and refresh-rate compatibility for every console, computer, player and sound system.
  6. Inspect on arrival: check the panel, stand, accessories and model label before mounting. Test a bright scene, a dark scene, motion and each input during the return period.
  7. Calibrate for your room: choose a suitable picture mode, disable processing that creates unwanted soap-opera motion, and adjust brightness for the room rather than copying another owner’s settings.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling 42 inches “40 inches”: this hides a real size difference and can cause a failed cabinet fit.
  • Treating launch MSRP as today’s price: the C6 figure is tied to LG’s March 5, 2026 announcement.
  • Assuming a higher refresh rate guarantees smoother games: the source device, game frame rate, connection and VRR support all matter.
  • Using Dolby labels as a quality score: format compatibility does not measure speakers, HDR brightness or picture accuracy.
  • Ignoring lower-resolution content: a 4K panel still depends on its processing when the source is HD or below.
  • Buying without a return plan: independent measurements for these exact examples were not established, so a return window is important for checking your own room and sources.

Bottom line for a 40-inch 4K search

A responsible “five best 40-inch 4K TVs” list cannot be supported by the verified evidence available here. The documented compact alternatives are two 42-inch-class 4K OLEDs: LG OLED42C6PUA (2026), with manufacturer-listed Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, up to 165Hz and 4K/165Hz VRR, and LG OLED42C5AUA (2025), with Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and 144Hz. The C6’s $1,399 price is a March 2026 launch MSRP, not a current quote; the C5A’s current price and stock are not established. Buy one only after confirming that 42 inches fits, the local offer is genuine and dated, and your sources support the features you care about.
