The best NAS for a home is the one that fits your storage growth, backup habits, network and media needs—not a universal top-rated model. Start by deciding what you will store and protect, then compare drive bays, storage layout, network ports, software and drive compatibility. The Synology DS224+, Synology DS925+ and QNAP TS-264 illustrate different options, but manufacturer features and dated editorial recommendations are not the same as a current, controlled performance ranking.

What a home NAS does—and what it does not do

A network-attached storage (NAS) device connects storage to your home network so household members and devices can use shared files. Depending on the model and software, it can also support file syncing, photo management and backups. Synology describes these functions for the DS224+.

A NAS is not automatically a complete backup plan. Drive redundancy and snapshots address particular failures or unwanted changes, but they do not create every additional copy you may need. Keep another copy outside the NAS for important files, and decide where that copy will live based on your needs.

Which NAS is right for your home?

Match the device to the household’s main job rather than choosing by a single spec. A compact two-bay enclosure may suit shared files and routine backups; a home office with growing storage needs may value more capacity and recovery features; a media-focused setup should account for its playback and transcoding workload.

UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
  • The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. (QNAP product page) The reproduced recommendation is dated 2023, not a current 2026 winner. A 2.5GbE port only helps when the rest of the connection supports that speed.

How many drive bays do you need?

Bay count determines how many drive positions the enclosure provides and affects room for growth. A two-bay model is compact; a model with more bays can offer more drive positions. Neither the number of bays nor the sum of drive capacities equals usable storage automatically: the storage layout and drive sizes determine how much space is available for files.

  • Estimate the files you already have and how quickly they are likely to grow.
  • Decide whether compact size or additional drive positions matter more to your household.
  • Check how the model’s supported storage layouts affect usable capacity before selecting drives.

Do not treat RAID or snapshots as substitutes for another copy of important files. They can help in specific drive-failure or recovery situations, but the cited material does not establish protection against every incident.

Will the NAS be fast enough on your home network?

Compare the NAS Ethernet port with the router or switch and the client device that will transfer files. A faster NAS port cannot make a 1GbE link elsewhere in the path faster. TechRadar identifies Ethernet standard, alongside bay count, size and noise, as factors to consider when choosing a NAS (TechRadar NAS guide).

  • Mostly backups and shared documents: Consider whether your current network is adequate for the volume and frequency of transfers.
  • Large media files or several active users: Check the Ethernet capability at every point between the NAS and the devices doing the work.
  • Considering 2.5GbE: Confirm that the NAS, router or switch, and client all support the faster connection before expecting its benefit.

The TS-264’s advertised 2.5GbE port is a specification, not a guarantee of a particular transfer speed in your home (QNAP).

Which software and backup features matter?

Software determines how the NAS handles file access, photos, syncing, backups, snapshots and available apps. Compare the actual workflow you need across the models you are considering. Synology describes centralized file and photo management, backup and Btrfs snapshots on the DS224+; QNAP describes backup and cloud-sync functions for the TS-264 (Synology; QNAP).

What should you check before buying drives?

Budget for the enclosure and drives separately when drives are not included. Synology states that drives are sold separately for the DS224+ and directs buyers to its compatibility list (Synology DS224+). Verify the current compatibility information for your specific model and intended drives rather than assuming any drive will work.

Also consider enclosure placement, size and noise: a NAS may run in a living area or home office, where those practical details matter as much as a feature list. TechRadar includes size and noise among its selection criteria (TechRadar).

Can a NAS back up family photos and multiple computers?

A NAS can serve as a shared destination for files and support backup workflows, but the exact process depends on its software and the devices in your household. Before choosing a model, confirm that its backup tools cover the operating systems and phones you use, and decide how photo libraries will be imported, organized and accessed. Synology describes backup and centralized photo management on the DS224+; QNAP lists backup functions for the TS-264 (Synology; QNAP).

For important family photos, make sure your plan includes another copy beyond the NAS. Storage redundancy can help with some drive failures, but it does not by itself establish that files are protected from every kind of loss.

How should you plan remote access?

Remote access is a separate decision from local file sharing. Synology’s DS224+ datasheet describes QuickConnect as a way to access storage remotely without configuring complex port-forwarding rules: “Access your storage securely from anywhere without configuring complex port forwarding rules by enabling Synology QuickConnect.” (Synology DS224+ datasheet)

Built for beginners who crave simplicity, it brings your scattered photos, videos, and files together into one secure home hub — no tech skills needed. This entry-level 2-bay NAS is perfect for personal entertainment, photo backup, and worry-free data protection — now with Docker support for those ready to explore more.
  • One-Time Investment, Lifelong Storage Freedom: Unlike Cloud storage with its recurring subscription fees and ever-shrinking free tiers, Yxk Zero1 NAS is a one-time purchase that puts you in complete control of your data. **The Hard Drive Must Be Purchased Separately — add or replace drives as your collection grows, no monthly bills, no storage limits imposed by others, and no risk of sudden price hikes. Your NAS, your rules, forever.
  • Remote Access From Any Device: Once your NAS is set up, that's all you need to remember. Browse, upload, and share files from your phone app, desktop client, or any web browser — Windows, macOS, iOS, or Android. One central hub, everywhere you go.
  • Blazing 2.5GbE Speed: With 2.5GbE connectivity — 2.5x faster than standard 1GbE — your files transfer in a flash and 4K streams without buffering. Flexible RAID modes, automated backups, and snapshot recovery work quietly in the background, so your data stays safe from drive failures or accidental loss. Speed without compromise, protection without complexity.
  • Your Private Cloud Shared Your Way: You own your data — all of it, 100%. Advanced encryption and granular permission controls keep your files protected whether they're stored locally or shared with family and friends. Set up dedicated spaces for each user, so everyone gets seamless access across devices while keeping personal files truly personal. Privacy isn't a feature; it's the foundation.

That feature statement does not amount to a complete security setup or establish that every way of exposing a NAS to the internet is safe. Check the manufacturer’s current security guidance and configure remote access deliberately.

A practical selection checklist

  1. List the workload: Identify the files, photos, computers, users and media tasks the NAS must support.
  2. Estimate growth: Choose the number of bays and storage layout with future capacity in mind; calculate usable space from the intended drive sizes and layout.
  3. Map the network path: Compare the NAS port with the router or switch and the client devices before paying for faster Ethernet.
  4. Verify the software workflow: Check support for the backup, file access, photo, snapshot and app features you intend to use.
  5. Confirm the drive package: Find out whether drives are included, consult the model’s compatibility list, and account for drive costs separately.
  6. Plan recovery and placement: Decide where another copy of important data will be kept and whether the enclosure’s size and noise suit its location.

Android Central’s home NAS guide also frames selection around workload, transcoding, extensibility, photo backup and RAID (Android Central). Those are useful prompts, but the right balance depends on what your household actually does.
