If Bloober Team’s Layers of Fear, Observer, The Medium or the Silent Hill 2 remake worked for you, start with SOMA. It delivers the strongest story-first, idea-driven horror here, with exploration, documents and moral questions replacing conventional combat. Choose Amnesia: The Bunker for harsher survival pressure, Luto for a newer inward-looking psychological experience, Silent Hill 2 Remake for the closest third-person match, and Cronos: The New Dawn to see Bloober extend its horror language into post-apocalyptic science fiction.
At a glance: which game fits your taste?
| Game | Choose it when you want | Viewpoint | Primary pressure | PlayStation-listed release |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SOMA | Philosophical, narrative-first horror | First person | Evasion and investigation; no fighting back | PS4, September 22, 2015 |
| Amnesia: The Bunker | Resource scarcity and constant survival tension | First person | One remaining bullet, a semi-open bunker and an adaptive threat | June 6, 2023 |
| Luto | A recent, intimate psychological-horror story | First person | Repeated escape attempts, puzzles and unsettling spirits | July 21, 2025 |
| Silent Hill 2 Remake | Bloober-style psychological drama in a physical, third-person form | Third person | Exploration and conventional survival-horror danger | Current PS5 edition and stock should be checked |
| Cronos: The New Dawn | Bloober’s move toward post-apocalyptic science fiction | Third person | Limited inventory, rescue decisions and repeat-play lore | Covered in a May 4, 2025 interview; release details are not established here |
These are fit-based recommendations rather than a universal ranking. The right choice depends on whether you value ideas, pressure, character psychology, camera perspective or the way Bloober’s design has evolved.

SOMA: the first choice for philosophical, story-first horror
SOMA is the clearest follow-up when the part of Bloober’s work you value most is atmosphere, investigation and a story that keeps changing what “person” means. PlayStation’s official description opens with a world in collapse: “The radio is dead, food is running out, and the machines have started to think they are people.” That premise puts identity and consciousness at the center instead of treating them as background lore.
How its narrative is delivered
You move through PATHOS-II, investigate locked terminals and uncover secret documents. The setting asks you to assemble the situation from evidence rather than from a constant stream of exposition. Hostile creatures and an omnipresent artificial intelligence create danger, but the game’s central rhythm is reading, interpreting and deciding what the discoveries mean.
#1 Best Overall
- Fully Remade to terrify modern audiences
- KONAMI's intense psychological horror masterpiece SILENT HILL 2 is made exclusively for PlayStation 5
- The main protagonist James Sunderland searches for clues in the namesake town, after receiving a mysterious letter from his wife Mary… who has long been dead
- Experience the eerie monsters and other manifestations of James' consciousness reworked after 20 years
- Made with state-of-the-art technology to play on modern entertainment systems in 4K
Why it suits Bloober fans
- Like Layers of Fear, it makes the environment part of the narrative rather than a neutral corridor between fights.
- Like Observer and The Medium, it treats perception and identity as horror subjects, not just visual effects.
- It rewards players who enjoy connecting documents and environmental clues into a larger explanation.
The important mechanical difference
PlayStation states that “there’s no fighting back, either you outsmart your enemies or you get ready to run.” That is a decisive distinction from games built around weapons or repeated combat encounters. If you want to solve every threat by managing ammunition, SOMA will feel deliberately restrictive. If you prefer helplessness that serves the story, its rule set keeps attention on choices and consequences.
Who should start here
Pick SOMA first if your ideal horror game leaves you thinking about its ideas after the credits, and if collecting records and interpreting a hostile world sounds more appealing than mastering a combat loop. Frictional Games is listed by PlayStation as the publisher, and the PS4 release date is September 22, 2015.
Amnesia: The Bunker: choose it when survival pressure matters most
Amnesia: The Bunker keeps the first-person vulnerability associated with story-heavy psychological horror but adds a much tighter survival problem. PlayStation’s guide dates it to June 6, 2023, identifies Frictional Games as publisher and explicitly positions it for fans of Layers of Fear.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA setting built around scarcity
The game takes place in a desolate World War I bunker. You have one remaining bullet, and the environment is described as semi-open rather than a single strictly linear route. That combination changes how you read every room: resources are not just tools for the next encounter, but part of your decision about which risks are worth taking.
Why its horror feels different from SOMA
SOMA removes combat to make evasion and ideas the focus. The Bunker keeps the vulnerability but makes your limited means a visible survival calculation. PlayStation also describes responses that adapt to player decisions. You therefore cannot rely on a completely fixed sequence; the way you explore and react influences the pressure you experience.
Best fit and possible mismatch
- Best fit: players who want to search for clues while feeling that every mistake can worsen an already constrained situation.
- Possible mismatch: players who want a calm, document-led pace with little immediate resource anxiety.
Choose The Bunker after SOMA if you want the same broad first-person lineage with more direct survival stress, not if you are looking for a conventional action-horror arsenal.
Luto: a newer inward psychological-horror experience
Luto is the recommendation for readers who want a recent game focused on a troubled individual’s inner space. PlayStation lists its release as July 21, 2025 and describes Samuel Hale, a troubled artist whose home becomes a shadowy labyrinth.
What makes its structure distinctive
The premise combines repeated attempts to escape, puzzles, secrets and unsettling spirits. A home becoming a labyrinth gives the game a compact psychological frame: familiar rooms can be reinterpreted as the character’s state of mind, while repetition turns escape itself into a question rather than a simple objective.

How it connects to Bloober’s catalog
Luto belongs beside Layers of Fear when you want supernatural and mental-space horror presented from a first-person viewpoint. Its emphasis is less on a broad survival system and more on understanding Samuel’s situation through the spaces, puzzles and secrets you uncover. PlayStation lists SOMA as a comparable game, which makes Luto a logical bridge between Frictional-style atmospheric investigation and Bloober’s character-focused approach.
Who should play it
Choose Luto if you want a shorter-feeling, concentrated psychological premise built around escape and interpretation. It is a weaker match for anyone primarily seeking gunplay, large-scale exploration or a clearly external monster threat.
Silent Hill 2 Remake: the closest major third-person match
Silent Hill 2 Remake is the most natural recommendation when what you want from Bloober is a physical, third-person psychological-horror production rather than another first-person experience. It is the studio’s best-known recent third-person project, so it offers the clearest continuation of the camera and staging direction established in The Medium.
Why the fit is strong
The game centers psychological drama, guilt and repression, giving the horror an explicitly character-focused foundation. Third-person framing lets you read the protagonist’s body and movement within the environment, creating a different relationship to space from the immediate eye-level immersion of Layers of Fear, SOMA or Luto.

What to verify before buying
The available evidence supports recommending the current PS5 edition as the relevant physical-game option, but edition availability and stock change. Check the live listing and the exact edition in your region before purchase rather than assuming that every retailer carries the same version.
How to decide between it and Luto
- Choose Silent Hill 2 Remake for a larger, third-person presentation with conventional survival-horror systems and a sustained focus on guilt and repression.
- Choose Luto for a first-person, inward experience built around repeated escape attempts, puzzles and secrets.
Cronos: The New Dawn: Bloober’s next step beyond its earlier formula
Cronos: The New Dawn is the pick for readers interested in how Bloober’s horror has developed rather than simply looking for another version of Layers of Fear. A May 4, 2025 TechRadar interview with director Wojciech Piejko traces that progression: Layers of Fear was the breakthrough horror game; Observer added dialogue choices; Blair Witch introduced a larger artificial-intelligence companion; The Medium moved to third person; and Silent Hill 2 supplied a backbone for third-person camera work.
The premise and its central loop
Piejko describes the objective this way: “Your goal is to enter the city, look for time rifts, and jump back to the past to extract people who didn’t survive the apocalypse.” That gives Cronos a post-apocalyptic, time-traveling structure rather than a haunted-house setup. The stated systems include limited inventory, choices about whom to rescue and lore designed to reward repeat playthroughs.

Cronos combines the studio’s newer third-person staging with science-fiction world-building and decisions that can change how you approach subsequent runs. It is a better fit for players who want a game to show the studio stretching beyond supernatural and psychological spaces into a larger speculative setting.

A deliberate tonal warning
In the same interview, director Jacek Zięba said, “This will be farther away from Silent Hill or anything we did before.” Treat that as useful guidance, not a defect: Cronos is relevant because it demonstrates evolution, but it should not be selected on the assumption that it reproduces Silent Hill 2 or Layers of Fear.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the five games differ on the axes that matter
| Decision axis | Best match | What that means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Narrative density | SOMA | Environmental documents and philosophical questions carry much of the experience. |
| Character-focused psychological drama | Luto or Silent Hill 2 Remake | Luto turns a home into an inward labyrinth; Silent Hill 2 Remake uses third-person staging for guilt and repression. |
| First-person immersion | SOMA, Amnesia: The Bunker or Luto | The camera keeps you close to investigation, evasion and the character’s immediate space. |
| Third-person staging | Silent Hill 2 Remake or Cronos | The protagonist is visible in the environment, supporting more physical scene composition. |
| Lowest combat emphasis | SOMA | There is no fighting back; you outsmart threats or run. |
| Strongest resource pressure | Amnesia: The Bunker | A single remaining bullet and a semi-open bunker make scarcity part of every decision. |
| Science-fiction identity themes | SOMA | Machines that believe they are people and the PATHOS-II investigation drive the premise. |
| Post-apocalyptic time travel | Cronos | Time rifts, rescue choices and repeat-play lore define its direction. |
A simple decision path
- Ask whether you want combat at all. If the answer is no, start with SOMA. If you want scarcity and a direct survival problem, choose Amnesia: The Bunker.
- Choose your camera. First person points to SOMA, The Bunker or Luto. Third person points to Silent Hill 2 Remake or Cronos.
- Choose the story’s emotional center. Science-fiction identity favors SOMA; an artist’s troubled inner world favors Luto; guilt and repression favor Silent Hill 2 Remake; post-apocalyptic rescue and time rifts favor Cronos.
- Decide whether you want a familiar Bloober continuation. Silent Hill 2 Remake is the closest major third-person fit. Choose Cronos only if you are interested in the studio moving farther from its established formula.
Suggested playing order
For most Bloober fans, begin with SOMA, then move to Amnesia: The Bunker if you want more immediate survival pressure. Play Luto next for a concentrated first-person psychological experience. Follow with Silent Hill 2 Remake when you want the studio’s third-person approach at full scale, and finish with Cronos: The New Dawn as an example of where that approach can lead in science fiction.
If your priority is third-person presentation from the start, reverse the first two steps: play Silent Hill 2 Remake, then Cronos, and use SOMA or Luto when you want to return to first-person psychological investigation.
