Choose the game that preserves the part of Call of Duty you actually use. Battlefield 6 is the closest military-scale replacement; its free REDSEC destination is the Battlefield option to investigate if you do not want to buy the full game. For a free, cross-platform destruction arena, play THE FINALS. Counter-Strike 2 and VALORANT are the strongest round-based competitive alternatives, with CS2 emphasizing objective gunplay and economy while VALORANT adds agents and abilities. Rainbow Six Siege is the methodical breaching choice, and Apex Legends is the direct Warzone-style battle-royale substitute.
Store access, cross-play rules, editions and free-to-play terms can change by platform and country. Check the current first-party store page for your region before downloading or buying.
Quick comparison
These games overlap with Call of Duty, but they do not all solve the same problem. The table identifies the format and feature that most clearly separates each option.
| Game | Best fit | Entry and platform information | Match format | Defining systems |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Battlefield 6 | Large-scale military combat | Paid Battlefield 6 entry; the official page also identifies REDSEC as a free-to-play Battlefield destination. Confirm the edition and platform in your region. | Military-scale infantry and vehicle combat | Aerial dogfights, tactical destruction and squad-based play |
| THE FINALS | Free destructive arena action | Free+ on Xbox; listed for PC, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Cloud Gaming, with Xbox cross-platform multiplayer. | Fast team-sport arena matches | Buildings can be crashed through; teams build bridges and barricades. |
| Counter-Strike 2 | Precision competitive rounds on PC | Free to play on Steam; an optional Prime Status Upgrade was listed at $14.99 on the accessed page. | Objective-focused rounds | Premier ratings, dynamic smoke grenades and regional/global leaderboards |
| VALORANT | Competitive rounds with character abilities | Free-to-play PC tactical shooter; verify current regional access. | Five-versus-five attack/defend rounds | One life per round, agents with distinct abilities, Competitive and Unranked modes |
| Rainbow Six Siege | Methodical breaching and gadgets | PlayStation lists casual and ranked play; Ubisoft’s current page offers Free Access. Availability and limits vary by platform and region. | Five-versus-five close-quarters rounds | Operators, breaching and gadget-driven tactics |
| Apex Legends | Warzone-style battle royale | Free to download on Windows, Steam, Epic, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. | 60-person Battle Royale matches | Legends with individual skills and strategic squad play |
No dated first-party concurrency or market-share figure is supplied for these games, so “active players” should be judged from current matchmaking in your region rather than an unsupported global ranking.

How to choose your Call of Duty replacement
Decide whether you want rounds, arenas or a battle royale
Call of Duty can mean several different routines: short respawn matches, objective rounds, large maps with vehicles, or a battle royale. Round-based games remove the constant respawn loop and make each life consequential. Arena games keep the pace high but turn the map itself into a weapon. Battle royale matches trade instant re-entry for looting, positioning and a long single match. Pick the format first; weapon preference matters less when the match structure is wrong for you.
Separate free entry from free access on every platform
“Free” is not a universal platform promise. THE FINALS is listed as Free+ on Xbox, while Apex Legends is described as free to download across six platform families. CS2 has a free base game but lists Prime Status as an optional $14.99 upgrade on the accessed Steam page. Rainbow Six Siege’s current publisher page offers Free Access, which is not necessarily the same entitlement on every store. Battlefield 6 has a paid game and a separate free REDSEC destination. Confirm what the free tier includes, whether online multiplayer requires a console subscription, and whether progress transfers before you commit.
Cross-play is a specific feature, not a default
The Xbox listing for THE FINALS explicitly includes Xbox cross-platform multiplayer. Steam’s CS2 listing includes cross-platform multiplayer features. For the other games, the supplied official descriptions establish platform availability or multiplayer but do not establish every cross-play combination. If your group mixes PC, PlayStation, Xbox or Switch, check the game’s current cross-play support and input-based matchmaking settings before installing.

Battlefield 6: the closest military-scale substitute
Choose Battlefield 6 when the part you miss is the sense of a real military operation rather than a small competitive duel. EA describes high-intensity infantry combat, aerial dogfights, tactical destruction and squad-based gameplay. That combination gives you a battlefield with more moving parts than a typical lane-based shooter: infantry must react to vehicles and aircraft, and squads can coordinate around changing terrain.
What carries over from Call of Duty
- Contemporary military presentation and conventional firearms.
- Fast infantry engagements inside a larger battle.
- Team objectives where communication and positioning matter.
What changes
The scale is the trade-off. You are not selecting a one-life 5v5 round; you are operating in a broader combat space where aircraft, destruction and squad movement shape the fight. That makes the game a better fit for players who enjoy battlefield momentum than for someone seeking a pure aim duel.
How to enter without buying blindly
The official Battlefield page provides a Buy Now path for Battlefield 6 and identifies REDSEC as a free-to-play Battlefield destination. Treat them as separate entry decisions: check the store listing for the platform and edition you want, then verify what REDSEC includes in your country. Do not assume that ownership of one automatically grants every mode in the other.

THE FINALS: free destruction and cross-platform arena play
THE FINALS is the pick for players who want a free team shooter where the environment is part of the strategy. The Xbox description says that “nothing can stand in your way” and centers on crashing through walls and ceilings, then building bridges and barricades. Instead of treating a map as fixed cover, teams can open routes, remove protection or create a new approach.
Why it feels different from a standard military shooter
The game is presented as a fast-paced team sport. Destruction is not decorative: a wall can disappear, a ceiling can become an entrance and a barricade can buy time. This produces fights that change during the match and rewards teams that adapt rather than repeatedly take the same lane.
Platform and group play
Xbox lists the game as Free+ for PC, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Cloud Gaming, with online and Xbox cross-platform multiplayer. If one friend is on PC and another on Xbox, the listing provides a clear basis for cross-platform play within that ecosystem. Check current console-store requirements and regional availability before inviting a full group.
Best for
Pick THE FINALS if you want no-cost entry, short arena-style sessions and a team that can improvise with the map. It is a weaker substitute if your priority is a grounded military simulation or a battle royale match with a shrinking circle.
Counter-Strike 2: disciplined objective rounds on PC
Counter-Strike 2 is the most focused alternative here. Steam lists a free-to-play multiplayer game with objective-driven play, Premier ratings, dynamic smoke grenades and global and regional leaderboards. Its structure rewards crosshair placement, timing, utility use and an economy that makes each purchase consequential.

Round structure and learning curve
A round ends when a team completes its objective or eliminates the other side. There is no respawn to erase a mistake, so information and patience matter more than constant movement. The economy links rounds together: a lost purchase can affect the next round, while a disciplined save can fund a stronger buy later. That creates a different rhythm from a respawn playlist.

- Classic Experience Built for a Modern Era: With all core gameplay modes present, plus two brand new modes and enhanced visuals, Street Fighter 6 redefines the classic fighting game genre.
- Distinct Fighting Styles to Master: 18 diverse characters including legendary World Warriors and exciting brand new characters add their own flair to the game at launch, with more to be added post-launch.
- Brand New Game Modes: The Street Fighter franchise continues to hone its skills and redefine the fighting genre with the introduction of three new foundational modes – Fighting Ground, World Tour and Battle Hub.
- In-Game Commentating: Street Fighter’s first-ever Real-Time Commentary Feature, supported with subtitles in 13 languages, incorporates the voices of popular Fighting Game Community (FGC) commentators like Vicious and Aru directly into the game to narrate what is happening on-screen just like a real tournament.
- Two New Control Schemes: Classic Controls returns alongside two brand new options: Modern Controls allow you to perform special attacks with simple button combinations and are designed for players who want to fight without memorizing and practicing special move button combinations first. Dynamic Controls only require a press of the Auto-Attack button to perform attacks and is a great control type to use when you have friends and family over for a quick, casual game.
Competitive infrastructure
Premier ratings provide a visible competitive ladder, and the listing also identifies regional and global leaderboards. Dynamic smoke grenades add a current tactical layer: smoke can interact with the surrounding action rather than functioning as a permanently identical visual wall. These systems make CS2 a good choice when your goal is measurable improvement in a precise ruleset.
PC requirements and cost
The accessed Steam listing names Windows 10 minimums, 8 GB of RAM and 85 GB of storage. Those figures are the listed minimum requirements, not a promise of a particular frame rate or settings level. The base game is free; the same page lists an optional Prime Status Upgrade at $14.99. Check the live listing for updates before installation because requirements and pricing can change.
VALORANT: five-versus-five rounds with agents
VALORANT is the choice when you want the discipline of round-based tactical play but also want every player to bring a distinct toolkit. Riot describes a 5v5 tactical shooter in which “you have 13 rounds to attack and defend your side using sharp gunplay and tactical abilities.” Each round gives one life, so an early elimination removes that player’s influence until the next round.
Abilities without abandoning gunplay
Agents have distinct abilities that can create information, deny an area, protect a plant or enable a push. The weapon still decides many confrontations, but teams plan around ability timing and composition. This adds role complexity that CS2 intentionally keeps lower: you must learn both maps and an agent’s responsibilities.
Modes for different commitments
Riot lists Competitive and Unranked modes alongside Deathmatch and Spike Rush. Competitive is the deliberate ladder experience; Unranked preserves the attack-and-defend format without the same rating pressure. Deathmatch strips away much of the team structure for aim practice, while Spike Rush compresses the round experience for shorter sessions.
Who should choose it
Select VALORANT if your group enjoys callouts, coordinated utility and practicing a defined role. It is less suitable if you want vehicles, large-scale destruction or a battle royale. Because the game is built around agents, switching from another shooter also means learning ability interactions rather than only transferring weapon muscle memory.

Rainbow Six Siege: planning, breaching and close-quarters gadgets
Rainbow Six Siege rewards preparation more than run-and-gun play. PlayStation describes casual and ranked 5v5 matches built around operators, breaching and gadget-driven close-quarters combat. Ubisoft’s current page offers Free Access and shows October 2026 events and patch notes, evidence that the live service is still being updated at the time of access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy the tactical pace is slower
Operators can reinforce, breach, deny entry, gather information or protect a site. Doors, walls and ceilings become tactical surfaces rather than scenery. A successful attack often starts before the first shot: identify the objective, clear information tools, decide where to breach and prepare a safe route for the final push.
Casual versus ranked
Casual provides a lower-pressure way to learn maps and operator gadgets. Ranked is the structured option for players who want a more serious 5v5 environment. The same core principles apply in both, but ranked makes communication, site knowledge and consistent role execution more important.
Free Access caveat
“Free Access” is a publisher entitlement, not a guarantee that every operator, mode or platform feature is unrestricted. Read the current store description for your platform, including any progression or content limits, before deciding whether it replaces a paid copy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Apex Legends: the direct battle-royale alternative
Apex Legends is the clearest choice for someone asking what to play instead of Warzone. EA describes it as free to download on Windows, Steam, Epic, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch, and its official page documents 60-person Battle Royale matches. PlayStation characterizes the game as a hero-shooter and battle-royale blend built around strategic squad play.
Legends change how squads fight
Each Legend has individual skills, so team composition affects scouting, movement, defense and revival options. You are not choosing only a weapon loadout; you are choosing a role with abilities that shape how the squad approaches a fight and escapes a bad position.

Battle royale commitment
A 60-person match has a different time cost from a short round or arena game. Looting, rotating and selecting fights are as important as aim. Elimination can end your participation unless teammates recover and revive you, so a squad that communicates is more reliable than a collection of solo players sharing a drop.
Seasonal service and platform checks
EA documents continuing seasonal updates, but content, balance and availability can change. Verify the current download page for your hardware and region, then check whether your console’s online-service requirements apply. The supported-platform list does not by itself prove that every cross-play or progression combination is identical.

Installation and first-session checklist
- Confirm the exact platform. Use the current first-party page for PC, PlayStation, Xbox or Switch. A game’s presence on one store does not guarantee the same edition or free tier elsewhere.
- Check the access model. Decide whether you are buying Battlefield 6, entering REDSEC, using a free base game such as CS2, or relying on a Free Access or Free+ listing.
- Verify hardware and storage. CS2’s accessed listing specifies 8 GB of RAM, Windows 10 and 85 GB of storage. For every other title, read the live platform requirements rather than assuming a Call of Duty installation will run it.
- Set up cross-play before inviting friends. Confirm supported platform combinations, account linking and whether cross-play can be disabled. The THE FINALS Xbox listing explicitly includes Xbox cross-platform multiplayer; other combinations require their own current documentation.
- Choose the right onboarding mode. Use Deathmatch or Spike Rush in VALORANT for short practice, casual Siege to learn operators, and a non-ranked playlist where available before entering a rating system. In CS2, learn objective routes and economy basics before Premier.
- Review input and communication settings. Squad games depend on voice or ping communication. Configure push-to-talk, subtitles, sensitivity and field of view before judging a game by its first match.
- Recheck live-service changes. Seasonal updates, events, patches, prices and free-access limits change. Revisit the official store or publisher page when a mode, platform or entitlement is important to your decision.
Common mistakes when replacing Call of Duty
Expecting identical movement and time-to-kill
None of these games is a drop-in mechanical clone. Round-based titles make one life matter; Siege slows engagements with information and gadgets; Apex adds armor, Legends and rotations; Battlefield expands the fight with vehicles and destruction; THE FINALS makes structures temporary. Give each game enough sessions to learn its own timing before deciding that the shooting feels wrong.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choosing by “free” alone
A free download can still have optional upgrades, platform requirements or content limits. CS2’s Prime Status is a separate paid upgrade, and Siege’s Free Access description does not establish that every feature is unrestricted. Read the entitlement text for your region.
Assuming a large player base
There is no dated first-party concurrency or market-share number here that can prove which game has the most active players. Matchmaking quality depends on region, platform, time of day and selected mode. Test the queues you actually intend to play, and avoid treating a global reputation as a guarantee for your local experience.
Ignoring squad-size dependence
Siege and VALORANT are built around coordinated teams; Apex’s strategic squad play and Battlefield’s squad model also reward communication. THE FINALS can be more forgiving when the arena is chaotic, while CS2 still punishes isolated decisions in objective rounds. If your friends rarely play together, prioritize the title whose solo queue and preferred format fit your schedule.
Bottom-line recommendations by player type
- Want the closest broad military replacement: Battlefield 6; investigate REDSEC if you need a free Battlefield route.
- Want a free game for a mixed PC/Xbox group: THE FINALS, subject to the current regional listing and cross-play settings.
- Want the cleanest competitive fundamentals: Counter-Strike 2 on PC.
- Want tactical abilities and a competitive ladder: VALORANT.
- Want breaching and gadget puzzles: Rainbow Six Siege.
- Want a free battle royale with hero abilities: Apex Legends.
The Bottom Line
There is no single Call of Duty replacement because Call of Duty combines several formats. Start with Battlefield 6 for military scale, THE FINALS for free destruction, CS2 or VALORANT for competitive rounds, Siege for breaching, and Apex Legends for battle royale. Verify current platform, cross-play and free-access terms in your region before installing.
