There is no officially documented “best” Moonfrost preset yet. The Steam and Epic listings do not publish the game’s graphics-menu controls, an optimal preset, or controlled frame-rate tests. The one platform-specific finding available is qualitative: SteamDB marks the Steam Deck version as Playable and says its default graphics configuration performs well. On PC, use the current build’s defaults as your baseline, change one visible option at a time, and record the result on your hardware rather than relying on an invented FPS target.
What can—and cannot—be established about Moonfrost graphics settings
Moonfrost is an Early Access game from Oxalis Games with pixel-art visuals, dynamic lighting, weather and wildlife. Those systems can affect both image appearance and rendering workload, but the official store material does not identify which graphics controls exist in the current build or which options have the greatest performance impact.
That makes any article promising exact values such as “turn lighting to medium,” a guaranteed frame rate, or a universal competitive preset unreliable unless it names a specific build, device, resolution and test procedure. No such controlled settings comparison or FPS benchmark is published in the available official material.
The practical answer is therefore a method rather than a magic preset:

- Measure how the game behaves in the places and weather conditions that matter to you.
- Reduce only the options that the current build actually exposes, changing one at a time.
- Protect readability and pixel-art sharpness before cutting visual effects.
- Retest after substantial Early Access updates.
This approach gives you a repeatable configuration without presenting undocumented settings as facts.
Published hardware requirements, kept separate by store
Steam and Epic publish different requirement lists. They should not be merged into a single “official” specification, because each list is tied to its own store page and wording. Both are minimum or recommended guidance, not a promise of a particular frame rate, resolution or visual quality.

The Steam page was accessed in 2026 and lists Windows 11, while Epic lists Windows 7 for its minimum tier. That difference is a reason to check the requirements on the store where you own the game and to confirm that your operating-system support is still current. Meeting a minimum list means only that your system is within the publisher’s stated floor; it does not establish a target FPS or guarantee that every later Early Access build will behave identically.

Why Moonfrost’s visual workload can vary
Dynamic lighting
Dynamic lighting changes as the game scene changes. A quiet, static area may behave differently from a scene with several moving light sources or time-of-day transitions. Because the current menu does not document which lighting controls are available, do not assume a particular shadow, lighting-quality or illumination switch exists. If the build offers one, compare it in the same location and under the same conditions rather than judging from a single glance.
Weather
Weather is part of Moonfrost’s presentation and may alter what is drawn on screen. A setting that appears smooth in clear conditions can feel less consistent during a weather event. Include at least one representative weather situation in your own check, especially if stutter appears intermittently rather than continuously.

Wildlife and a pixel-art presentation
Wildlife adds moving objects to the scene, while pixel art makes scaling and filtering choices easy to notice. A softer image may be acceptable to one player and distracting to another. When testing, evaluate both motion consistency and whether outlines, small objects and interface text remain easy to read. “Clearer graphics” is not automatically the same as “higher quality”; an unnecessarily high internal resolution can make a pixel-art game look less deliberate on a particular display.
Establish a trustworthy baseline before changing anything
A baseline prevents you from mistaking a different scene, weather state or background process for an improvement caused by a setting. Use this procedure whenever you install the game or after a major update.

Write down the game version shown by the launcher or title screen, the date, your operating system, display resolution and whether you are on a desktop, laptop or Steam Deck.
- Close variables you control. Exit unnecessary applications, pause downloads and use the same power mode each time. If you are on a laptop, test while connected to its normal gaming power source.
- Load a repeatable location. Choose an area where you regularly notice slowdowns. Include normal movement, camera panning and any activity that reliably produces the problem.
- Leave the current defaults unchanged for the first pass. Observe image clarity, input response, hitching and fan or temperature behavior for several minutes. Do not convert this observation into a universal FPS claim; it is your personal baseline.
- Capture the exact state. Note resolution, display mode and every option the build exposes. A screenshot of the menu is useful because Early Access labels can change.
If the game has no built-in performance overlay, you can still compare consistency by repeating the same route and camera movements. A numerical counter is helpful, but it is not required to identify a severe hitch or an unreadable interface.
Change one control at a time
The current official material does not list Moonfrost’s graphics controls, so a safe recipe must be conditional on what your build actually shows. If you see a resolution, display-mode, effects, lighting, shadow, post-processing, texture or similar control, change only one of them, then repeat the baseline route.
- Choose the smallest change that could address the symptom. For intermittent hitching, start with an option that visibly governs a costly effect if the menu identifies one; for a uniformly low frame rate, test resolution or overall quality only if those controls are present.
- Apply the change and return to the identical location and activity.
- Check both motion and image quality. A setting that removes a hitch but makes text or pixel edges difficult to read may not be a useful final choice.
- Write down the result before trying another control. If two changes are made together, you cannot tell which one helped.
- Stop when the game feels consistent and the image remains comfortable. More changes are not automatically better.
Do not infer that a slider has the same cost or meaning as a similarly named option in another game. Moonfrost’s implementation and labels can change during Early Access.

Prioritize clarity without sacrificing stability
Keep the output appropriate for your display
Use the display resolution that produces a readable interface and clean pixel edges on your screen, provided the game remains stable. If the build offers a lower render or output resolution, test it only when performance is the limiting factor; a lower value can make small text and fine pixel patterns less distinct.

SteamDB’s Steam Deck record specifically notes small text. That observation is important even if you play on another device: a setting that improves motion but leaves menus or labels difficult to read is not a complete graphics solution. Examine inventory, dialogue and any dense interface screen after each change, not just the outdoor game world.
Prefer stable motion over a sharper but inconsistent image
Brief freezes and uneven camera movement are often more distracting than a modest reduction in effects. Because no Moonfrost benchmark establishes a universal threshold, decide using the route you actually play. Keep the clearest configuration that remains consistently responsive in your busiest normal scenes.
Steam Deck: the documented starting point
SteamDB’s compatibility record rates Moonfrost as Playable. Its note says the default graphics configuration performs well on Steam Deck. The compatibility test timestamp is 23 September 2026. This is a qualitative compatibility statement, not an FPS benchmark and not evidence that the same defaults are optimal on every PC.
Start on Deck with the game’s defaults instead of immediately lowering every option. Then check the practical limitations reported in the same record:

- Some text may be small.
- Some functions may require touch input, a virtual keyboard or a community configuration.
If motion is already consistent, address readability first. Adjust the system display scaling or use the game’s own interface option if the current build provides one, and verify that the change does not blur the pixel-art presentation. If you do alter a graphics control, document it so you can restore the default after a game update.
The Deck result should not be transferred to a different resolution, operating system or graphics card as a guaranteed performance result. It describes the tested handheld environment and its default configuration at that timestamp.

Systems near the published minimums
Expect to spend more time testing. Keep background work to a minimum, use a stable power mode and begin with conservative changes only when the default configuration is not consistent. The Steam minimum list includes 8 GB of RAM, 3 GB of video memory, DirectX 10 and 2 GB of storage; Epic’s minimum list instead names a Core i3 and a GTX 1660 Ti or RX 580 alongside 8 GB of memory. These lists are not interchangeable, so compare your hardware with the store page for your edition.
Systems around Epic’s recommended tier
Epic lists Windows 11, an Intel Core i5, 16 GB of memory and an RTX 2070 Super or RX 5700 XT as recommended. That is a useful reference point for the store’s guidance, but it still does not establish a fixed FPS target or prove that every visual option can be maximized in every future build. Begin with defaults and tune only if you can identify a real problem.

Performance can change when a laptop switches power modes or uses integrated graphics. Confirm which GPU the game is using, test while connected to the intended power source and repeat the same route after changing power settings. Treat a sudden improvement after plugging in as a power-management difference, not proof that a Moonfrost graphics option was defective.

Troubleshoot by symptom
Persistent low performance
- Confirm that your operating system, processor, memory and graphics hardware are within the store’s published requirements for your edition.
- Verify that the game is using the intended graphics processor on systems with more than one.
- Return to defaults, then test one available resolution or quality control at a time.
- Retest in the same location so that a quieter scene does not create a false improvement.
Intermittent stutter
- Repeat the route during the weather or activity that triggers the hitch.
- Close downloads and background applications.
- Change one effect-related control only if the current menu identifies it, then compare the same camera movement.
- Record whether the issue happens once during loading or repeatedly during play; those are different symptoms and should not be “fixed” with the same assumption.
Blurry or hard-to-read image
- Check output resolution and display scaling before reducing more visual effects.
- Inspect small interface text, not just the character or scenery.
- Undo the last change if it improved motion at the cost of legibility.
Settings that do not persist
Early Access builds can change their menus and configuration behavior. Note the version, recheck the options after restarting the game and restore your documented baseline if an update resets values. Do not assume that a setting removed from one build is still available under a different name.
Early Access changes the answer over time
Moonfrost is still in Early Access. The Steam description says community feedback informs development and that additional content will continue to be added. A setting that behaves well in one build can therefore change after an update, along with menu labels, rendering performance or the scenes that stress your hardware.
After a significant update:
- Record the new version and date.
- Restore or note the game’s defaults.
- Repeat your saved route, including a weather or wildlife-heavy situation if that is where you previously saw problems.
- Reapply only the changes that still solve a measured problem.
This maintenance routine is more reliable than copying a settings list whose build and hardware are unknown.
What a responsible settings guide should not claim
The available listings and compatibility record do not establish any of the following:
- A named Moonfrost preset such as Low, Medium or High with documented values.
- A guaranteed FPS number on a particular processor or graphics card.
- Which individual effect has the largest performance impact.
- That Steam Deck defaults transfer unchanged to every Windows PC.
- That meeting a minimum requirement guarantees a particular resolution or visual quality.
Those claims require a current-build test that identifies the device, resolution, settings changed and observed result. Until that information is available, the repeatable baseline-and-one-change workflow is the honest way to reach smoother performance and clearer graphics.
Bottom-line configuration workflow
For Steam Deck, begin with the default configuration because SteamDB’s 23 September 2026 record reports that it performs well, then address small text or touch-dependent functions if they affect play. For PC, compare your system with the correct Steam or Epic requirement list, record the current build and test the default configuration in a repeatable scene. Change one option that the current menu actually exposes, verify both motion and readability, and keep a note of the result. Repeat after major Early Access updates. This produces a device-specific setting you can defend, without pretending that an undocumented universal preset or FPS guarantee exists.
