Monster Hunter Wilds is the safest starting point for most PC players waiting for Monster Hunter Outlanders. Choose Monster Hunter: World with Iceborne if you want the deepest exploration and a long-established progression ecosystem, or Monster Hunter Rise with Sunbreak if you value rapid traversal and a more aggressive hunt rhythm.
Outlanders is scheduled for iOS and Android on October 29, 2026—not PC. It is a free-to-play mobile game developed by TiMi Studio Group, with in-app purchases; a mainland China release is planned from 2027 onward. The three PC games below are therefore alternatives for learning the series and hunting on a computer, not versions of Outlanders.
Quick answer: which Monster Hunter should you play?
| If you want… | Start with… | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| The newest PC presentation and an active current-generation community | Monster Hunter Wilds | Released on PC on February 28, 2025, with cross-play and a story-led campaign. |
| Exploration, a substantial long-term journey and mature endgame content | Monster Hunter: World + Iceborne | World’s environmental focus and Iceborne’s expansion provide a large progression arc. |
| Fast movement, quick traversal and aggressive combat flow | Monster Hunter Rise + Sunbreak | Rise is built around a brisker mission rhythm and is available on Windows and Steam. |
There is no officially published, standardized enjoyment or performance ranking that makes one of these games universally best. Your preferred combat tempo, tolerance for tracking and interest in a long expansion campaign matter more than release order.

Capcom describes the series as hunting-action games in which players fight giant monsters in natural environments. Outlanders applies that franchise to mobile rather than bringing a new mainline PC entry. Capcom lists October 29, 2026 as the iOS and Android launch date, with TiMi Studio Group developing the game and a free-to-play model that includes in-app purchases. The mainland China version is scheduled from 2027 onward.
#1 Best Overall
- Introduces Kirin, a lightning-charged elder dragon mega boss that delivers one of the most demanding and strategic hunts in Monster Hunter World: The Board Game.
- Expands campaign depth with branching quests, rare loot rewards, and powerful crafting paths that reshape how hunters prepare for future encounters.
- Features escalating difficulty as Kirin grows more dangerous, forcing players to adapt tactics, optimize builds, and master risk-reward decisions.
- Includes a highly detailed Kirin miniature with commanding table presence, enhancing immersion and visual impact during epic boss battles.
- Designed for experienced tabletop players seeking intense cooperative gameplay, advanced strategy, and meaningful long-term progression.
That distinction changes the best way to fill the gap. A PC Monster Hunter can teach you the franchise’s hunt loop, equipment preparation and monster-reading skills, but it will not reproduce a mobile interface, touch controls or Outlanders’ eventual service schedule. Treat the games below as full PC hunting experiences that stand on their own.
Monster Hunter Wilds: the best default for a new PC player
Why Wilds is the natural first choice
Wilds launched simultaneously on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on February 28, 2025. Steam lists single-player, online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer. That combination makes it the clearest choice when you want a modern release with the largest chance of finding players on the current console generation and PC.
The campaign is story-led, so newcomers have a clear narrative reason to move from one hunt to the next. The presentation is designed for current-generation hardware, which suits players who want the newest visual and technical direction rather than an older PC conversion. Because Wilds is the latest mainline PC entry, guides, beginner discussions and multiplayer activity are centered on it at the time of writing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

How its hunt rhythm feels
Wilds sits between the deliberately investigative feel associated with World and the more accelerated pace associated with Rise. Expect to spend time understanding an environment and a monster, then act on openings instead of treating every encounter as a simple damage race. Its current-generation design makes the journey from story quest to online hunt feel like one continuous campaign.
Choose Wilds when you want one purchase that can serve as a solo introduction and a co-op game later. Cross-play is explicitly listed for the PC version, so your friends do not all need the same platform family. Confirm the exact edition and any current online requirements on the store page before buying.
Who should skip Wilds for now?
- Players using older PCs should check the live Steam system requirements before committing; the available information does not establish a single safe hardware specification.
- Players who specifically want the longest-established expansion endgame may prefer World and Iceborne.
- Players who dislike a story-led opening or want the quickest possible movement between objectives may feel more at home in Rise.
Monster Hunter: World and Iceborne: the depth-first option
Why World remains important on PC
World arrived on Steam on August 10, 2018. Capcom has identified it as a central driver of the franchise’s global growth and reported more than 30 million World units sold worldwide as of a June 2026 release. That sales scale is not a guarantee that every lobby will be full, but it explains why World has such a large knowledge base, a mature community and a substantial amount of established endgame discussion.
World is the pick for players who want the setting itself to feel like part of the hunt. Its emphasis is on exploration and tracking: you learn an area, follow evidence of a monster and turn that information into a planned encounter. The process takes longer than a purely mission-to-mission action game, but it rewards patience and observation.
What Iceborne adds to the decision
Iceborne is the major expansion route for World. It turns the base game into a longer progression arc rather than a short campaign followed by a small collection of optional fights. If you already know that you want a sustained character-building project, buying World with the intention of continuing into Iceborne avoids having to decide later whether to restart around an expansion.
The expansion’s established endgame is a major reason to choose this pair. “Endgame” here means the activities and equipment chase that remain after the main story, not a promise of a particular number of players online at a given moment. The exact contents, matchmaking activity and edition bundles can change by region or promotion, so check the current Steam listing.

- This Nintendo Switch system takes you to new heights with art inspired by the flagship monster, magnamalo, from the action-RPG title monster Hunter Rise.
- The eye catching metallic artwork features game inspired iconography on the Nintendo Switch Console, Joy-Con controllers, and the Nintendo Switch dock.
- As a bonus, this Nintendo Switch bundle includes a digital code for monster Hunter Rise + Deluxe kit DLC that includes the game and additional in-game content.
World’s trade-offs for beginners
- The slower tracking and preparation loop can feel opaque if you expect an immediate action mission.
- The 2018 PC release is older than Wilds, so its presentation and interface are not the newest in the series.
- Cross-play details are not established by the supplied official facts; verify platform compatibility if your group includes console players.
World is still an excellent teacher for the series’ deliberate side: read the terrain, identify a monster’s behavior and prepare before committing to a difficult hunt. Choose it when learning that process is part of the appeal rather than an obstacle.
Monster Hunter Rise and Sunbreak: the fast, movement-heavy route
Why Rise feels different
Capcom confirms that Rise is available on Windows and Steam. Its defining recommendation is pace: traversal is quicker, combat flow is more aggressive and individual missions tend to feel compact. You spend less time walking between objectives and more time responding to attacks, repositioning and maintaining pressure.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThis makes Rise a strong bridge for players coming from an action game who want Monster Hunter’s equipment and monster-learning systems without beginning with the most exploration-heavy option. It also suits people who play in shorter sessions and prefer a clear mission loop over a long expedition.
Sunbreak as the long-term plan
Sunbreak is Rise’s major premium expansion. If your intention is to keep playing after the base campaign, plan around the pair rather than treating Sunbreak as an unrelated add-on. The expansion extends the progression path and gives the faster combat style room to remain the focus of a longer playthrough.
Because the available facts do not provide a universal performance ranking or a fixed list of current promotions, do not infer value from a temporary bundle price. Compare the edition names on Steam and confirm that the package includes the base game plus Sunbreak if that is what you want.
Who benefits most from Rise?
- Players who prioritize mobility and rapid repositioning.
- Players who want hunts that fit more easily into a short evening session.
- Players who find World’s tracking emphasis too slow for their preferred action tempo.
Rise is less suitable if your primary goal is the most immersive environmental investigation or the newest current-generation presentation. Those priorities point toward World or Wilds respectively.

Choose by player profile instead of release order
If you are completely new to Monster Hunter
Start with Wilds if your PC meets the current requirements and you want the clearest modern introduction. Its story-led structure gives you a defined route, while cross-play leaves room to join friends on other supported platforms. Begin with the default weapon and tutorial guidance rather than trying to master every system before your first real hunt.
Choose Rise instead if responsiveness is your priority. Its quicker movement can make the first hours feel more immediately controllable. Choose World if you are curious about the franchise’s investigative side and do not mind spending time learning an area before a monster becomes vulnerable.

If you are playing with friends
Wilds has the most clearly documented cross-platform arrangement in the available information. Check whether everyone’s platform and regional edition are supported before purchasing another game. For World and Rise, confirm the current multiplayer and cross-play details directly on the storefront or official support page because the supplied facts do not establish equivalent cross-play support.
If you want a months-long solo project
World with Iceborne is the most straightforward choice when “long” means a broad journey from the base campaign into an established expansion endgame. Rise with Sunbreak is the alternative when you want that extended commitment built around faster hunts. Wilds is preferable when the newest presentation and current-generation campaign matter more than choosing the oldest, most established expansion route.
If you only have short sessions
Rise’s compact mission rhythm is the strongest fit. You can still play World or Wilds in short bursts, but their environmental investigation and story pacing may make a session feel less complete if you cannot stay with a hunt.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to start on PC without buying the wrong edition
- Decide your priority. Write down whether you value current-generation presentation, exploration depth or fast mobility. Use that answer to select Wilds, World with Iceborne or Rise with Sunbreak.
- Open the official regional Steam listing. Confirm that the game is available in your country, note the edition name and inspect whether an expansion is included.
- Check hardware requirements. Compare the listing’s operating-system, processor, memory, graphics and storage requirements with your PC. The figures can change as storefront pages are updated, and no universal number applies to all three games.
- Verify multiplayer needs. For Wilds, Steam lists online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer. For the other two, check the current listing and support information before assuming that a friend on another platform can join.
- Install the base game and test a solo hunt. Learn movement, item use, camera control and your weapon before joining a group. A short solo session reveals whether the game’s pace suits you without adding network variables.
- Add the expansion only when the base loop works for you. Iceborne and Sunbreak are major premium expansion routes, not substitutes for learning the base game. Buying a bundle can be sensible, but confirm the exact contents and regional pricing first.
- Recheck price and availability at checkout. Promotional discounts, bundle names and stock are volatile. Do not rely on an old price or a listing from another country.
Hardware and storefront cautions
It is not responsible to publish one “best PC” specification for these games from the available evidence. Wilds is the newest current-generation release, while World is a 2018 PC title and Rise is available across Windows and Steam; their practical requirements are not interchangeable. Read the live Steam requirements for the specific edition you plan to install.
Performance can also depend on settings, resolution, drivers and background applications. If a listing offers multiple editions, distinguish a base-game key from a bundle that includes Iceborne or Sunbreak. Regional storefronts may display different currencies, taxes, discounts or release availability.

Common mistakes while waiting for Outlanders
Assuming Outlanders is a PC demo
It is not. The scheduled release is for iOS and Android, so a Steam purchase will not provide access to Outlanders. The PC games are separate Monster Hunter experiences.
Buying the base game without planning for the expansion
World’s long progression route centers on Iceborne, and Rise’s extended route centers on Sunbreak. If you already know that you want the expansion, compare complete editions before buying the base game alone.
Expecting every entry to control the same way
World rewards patient tracking, Rise emphasizes mobility and Wilds presents a newer story-led campaign. Give the chosen game time to teach its own rhythm instead of judging it solely by the first mission in another entry.
Relying on an old price or compatibility claim
Prices, discounts, regional availability and system requirements are volatile. Verify them on the current storefront immediately before purchase, especially if you are buying a bundle or planning to play with friends.
A practical waiting plan before October 29, 2026
- Today: choose the game whose pace matches your preferred way to play, then check the live PC requirements.
- First sessions: complete the opening quests solo so you understand preparation, healing, item management and the weapon controls.
- After the basics: join online hunts if the game’s current multiplayer options fit your group. In Wilds, confirm cross-platform setup with each friend.
- When the base campaign clicks: decide whether the Iceborne or Sunbreak expansion path is worth adding for your desired length of play.
- At Outlanders’ launch: remember that the mobile release is a separate free-to-play title with in-app purchases. You can continue your PC campaign without treating it as a replacement or a required companion.
Bottom line for each type of PC hunter
- Pick Wilds for the newest mainline PC experience, a story-led campaign and explicitly listed cross-play.
- Pick World with Iceborne for exploration-focused hunting, a mature ecosystem and the longest-established expansion journey of these options.
- Pick Rise with Sunbreak for fast traversal, aggressive combat flow and missions that fit a compact session.
Capcom reported that Wilds had surpassed 10 million units by 2025, World had surpassed 30 million cumulative units by June 2026, and the Monster Hunter series had exceeded 131 million units worldwide as of June 30, 2026. Those figures show the scale of the audience, not a quality ranking. The right PC game is the one whose pace, campaign length and multiplayer requirements match how you intend to play while Outlanders remains a mobile release.
