For most desktop users, a 24-inch 1080p monitor is the best default: it keeps text and fine edges sharper than a 27-inch screen at the same resolution. Choose 27 inches if you sit farther away or value a larger image more than crisp detail. If fine text is a priority, consider 1440p rather than enlarging a 1080p display.

Why 24 inches is the best default for 1080p

1080p means 1920 × 1080 pixels. Those pixels do not multiply when the display gets bigger, so a larger screen spreads the same image across more physical space and has lower pixel density. That generally makes text and edges look less sharp.

RTINGS’ 2024 calculations put a 24-inch 1080p monitor at approximately 92 pixels per inch (PPI), compared with approximately 82 PPI at 27 inches. PPI describes how densely pixels are packed; these figures are useful for comparing the two sizes, not a universal threshold for acceptable sharpness. Panel coating and subpixel layout also affect how clear text looks. RTINGS explains pixel density and its calculation.

1080p screen size Approximate pixel density What to expect
24 inches 92 PPI (RTINGS, 2024) Sharper text and fine detail; the strongest general-purpose choice for ordinary desktop viewing.
27 inches 82 PPI (RTINGS, 2024) A larger image, but softer fine detail; more suitable if you sit farther away or prefer the bigger view.

Is 27 inches too large for 1080p?

Not necessarily. A 27-inch 1080p monitor can be comfortable if you sit farther back or simply prefer a larger image. The trade-off is lower pixel density, which makes small text and fine detail less sharp than on a 24-inch 1080p display. A bigger screen does not add detail when the resolution remains 1920 × 1080.

  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents

If you spend much of your time reading or working with fine text, staying at 24 inches or choosing a higher resolution is a better fit. RTINGS’ 1080p versus 1440p guide notes that 24-inch 1080p has decent text clarity, while larger 1080p sizes have less sharp text.

How far should you sit from a 1080p monitor?

Viewing distance can help you choose between 24 and 27 inches, but there is no single ideal distance for everyone. RTINGS gives these general starting ranges: 20–30 inches (50–75 cm) for 22–25-inch monitors, and 24–36 inches (60–90 cm) for 27-inch monitors. The ranges overlap; adjust for your eyesight, desk setup, and preferred field of view.

When to choose a different resolution or prioritize another feature

Choose 1440p when fine detail matters most

If sharper text and desktop detail are more important than keeping the same resolution, consider a 1440p monitor instead of moving to a larger 1080p screen. Before changing resolution, check that your computer can drive it at the refresh rate you want.

For gaming, compare more than screen size

Screen size alone does not determine gaming performance. Refresh rate, response behavior, panel characteristics, the games you play, and your computer’s ability to render the resolution and frame rate all matter. For example, RTINGS’ comparison lists the ASUS VG246H and Dell P2425H as 24-inch 1080p IPS monitors, with maximum refresh rates of 75 Hz and 100 Hz respectively. Those specifications illustrate that monitors of the same size and resolution can differ; check current specifications and availability before choosing a model. See the RTINGS model comparison.
