The best arrangement puts your primary monitor in the inside corner of the L, directly in front of your torso, with at least 20 inches between your eyes and the screen. Keep the keyboard and mouse in the same primary reach zone, set their surface near elbow height, and angle any second monitor inward rather than placing both screens flat across the desk.

For a desk that rises, route every power and signal cable along the rear or underside, secure slack to moving arms or cable loops, and leave a visible service loop at each height-changing joint. Mount the power strip under the desk or in its tray so only one flexible lead runs to the wall. The setup is successful only after it passes a complete seated-to-standing travel test without pulling, snagging, or disconnecting anything.

Why the inside corner is usually the best workstation

An L-shaped desk gives you two work surfaces, but the corner is the only location that naturally provides depth in both directions. Use that inside corner as the main station instead of treating one long wing as a conventional straight desk. The extra depth makes it easier to keep a large display at a safe viewing distance while preserving room for a keyboard, mouse, notebook, and other frequently used items.

OSHA’s current workstation guidance says the desk surface should let you place the monitor directly in front of you and at least 20 inches away. That is a minimum viewing distance, not a guarantee that every screen size or font will feel comfortable. A larger display, a shallow corner, or a user who prefers a greater text scale may require more depth.

  • Place the monitor you use most directly on the line from your nose through your torso.
  • Keep the keyboard and mouse in front of that display, not on the far wing of the desk.
  • Use the other wing for lower-frequency items such as a laptop, documents, speakers, charging devices, or reference material.
  • Keep items that must move with the desktop clear of the rear cable path and the monitor-arm clamp.

This arrangement minimizes repeated head and trunk rotation. It also gives a monitor arm or corner converter a stable visual center, which matters when the desk rises and the display moves with it.

Place one or two monitors correctly

Single-monitor setup

Center the display on your torso rather than centering it on the geometric middle of the entire L-shaped desktop. If the corner is asymmetrical, the screen may look off-center relative to the furniture while still being correctly aligned to your body. Position the top of the usable display area so you can work with a neutral neck; the exact height depends on your posture, screen size, and whether you look through the upper or lower portion of the panel.

Measure from your seated and standing eye positions to the screen before tightening any arm or converter. Confirm that the monitor remains at least 20 inches away in both postures. A corner that is deep enough for one display may become too shallow when a wide monitor is rotated or when its arm is pushed backward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Two-monitor setup

Choose one of two alignments:

  • Primary-display alignment: Put the screen used for most work directly in front of your torso and angle the second screen toward you. This is usually best when one display holds the active application and the other holds reference material.
  • Center-seam alignment: If both screens are used equally, place their seam on your body’s centerline and angle both panels slightly inward. Avoid making the seam sit far to one side merely because the desk corner is offset.

Angle the secondary display inward instead of leaving it parallel to the desk edge. Inward rotation reduces the distance your eyes and neck must travel. Check that the two screens do not collide with the inside corner, a raised rear edge, or the arm’s upright post when the desk is lowered.

Before buying large panels, measure the usable corner depth with the desk in its lowest and highest positions. Include the monitor’s stand or arm attachment, the thickness of the rear edge, and any wall clearance. Two 27-inch-class monitors can demand substantially more width and arm reach than two compact panels even when their combined weight is within the desk’s capacity.

Viewing angle, glare, and clearance

Face the primary panel squarely. Keep windows and strong lamps from reflecting directly into the screen; if glare forces you to lean or twist, the monitor is functionally in the wrong position. A secondary panel can have a greater angle, but it should still be readable without rotating your whole torso.

Leave enough clearance behind the monitors for the arm’s joints and for a cable service loop. Do not press a cable bundle tightly against a moving hinge or the desk’s rear edge. The monitor must be able to travel vertically without the cable becoming the limiting stop.

Set keyboard and mouse height for sitting and standing

The keyboard should remain in the primary reach zone beneath the main display. Keep the mouse beside it at the same general height so your shoulder does not have to reach outward toward the second wing. A keyboard tray can help when the desktop itself is too high, but it must be large enough to support both the keyboard and the way you actually use the mouse.

OSHA’s current checklist guidance gives adjustable keyboard-height targets of about 22–30 inches for seated tasks and 36–46.5 inches for standing tasks. These are setup targets, not promises that every person will be comfortable at the same measurement. Adjust until your forearms are approximately level, your shoulders can relax, and your wrists are not forced into a sharp bend.

Seated adjustment

  1. Sit with your back supported and your feet stable.
  2. Raise or lower the desk or tray until the keyboard is close to elbow height.
  3. Move the keyboard toward the front edge only far enough to keep your wrists neutral without losing forearm support.
  4. Place the mouse next to the keyboard, not on a higher shelf or the distant L wing.

Standing adjustment

  1. Stand close enough that you do not have to lean toward the corner.
  2. Raise the work surface or tray while keeping the monitor centered on your torso.
  3. Stop when your elbows can stay near your sides and your shoulders remain relaxed.
  4. Recheck the mouse position; a mouse left on the far wing can create a reaching habit even when the keyboard height is correct.

Alternate between sitting and standing rather than treating either position as permanent. If the desk stores a keyboard tray under the surface, make sure its rails, underside brackets, and cable loop can move through the entire height range without contacting the frame.

Decide whether you need a monitor arm

A monitor arm is useful when the desk surface is crowded, the factory stand cannot place the screen in the corner, or you need the display to move with a keyboard tray or converter. It is not automatically better than a stand. A heavy arm clamped to a thin or unstable surface can increase wobble, and a poorly matched gas spring can sag or make adjustment difficult.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the monitor before choosing an arm

  • Weight: Use the monitor’s actual weight without its original stand. Add the weight of any attached webcam, light, hub, or other accessory that travels on the arm.
  • Width and reach: A wide panel may hit the corner or the second monitor before the arm reaches the position you need.
  • VESA pattern: Confirm the mounting hole pattern on the monitor and the plate supplied with the arm. Common patterns include 75 × 75 mm and 100 × 100 mm, but the monitor’s specification is authoritative.
  • Arm rating: Published limits vary by arm family and configuration. A limit for one arm model cannot be assumed for another.
  • Clamp or grommet fit: Measure the desk edge thickness and check whether the corner has enough flat surface for the clamp. A grommet mount may be preferable when the rear edge is inaccessible.

Fellowes identifies monitor width, monitor weight excluding the stand, and VESA pattern as selection inputs. Treat those as minimum checks, then verify the specific arm’s range and installation requirements.

Corner converter option: StarTech ARMSTSCORNR

The StarTech ARMSTSCORNR is a directly relevant option when you want a raised workstation on an existing L-shaped desk. The manufacturer describes it as shaped for a corner, cubicle, or L-shaped desk. Its work surface measures 35.7 × 20.8 inches. It supports two monitors up to 24 inches each or one monitor up to 30 inches, with a total display capacity of 28 pounds.

Its keyboard tray measures 26.8 × 10.4 inches and is rated for 5 pounds. The converter includes a grommet monitor-mounting hole and integrated cable-management loops. Those dimensions make it important to measure your keyboard, mouse position, and corner depth rather than assuming the tray will accommodate a full-size keyboard plus a large pointing device.

Integrated desk reference: CORSAIR Platform:6 Elevate

For a complete desk rather than a desktop converter, CORSAIR lists the Platform:6 Elevate with a 72 × 30-inch desktop, a 29–48-inch height range, and a 330-pound desk capacity. Its monitor arms are listed at 18 pounds per arm and support 75 × 75 mm and 100 × 100 mm VESA patterns. A RapidRoute cable-management tray is part of the design.

These are manufacturer specifications to verify against the current configuration before purchase. Desk capacity is not the same as monitor-arm capacity: the frame may support a large total load while each arm has a much lower individual limit.

Use the L’s two wings without losing the primary reach zone

Reserve the corner and the nearest section of one wing for the tasks that require constant interaction. Put secondary equipment farther away only when you can reach it without twisting repeatedly.

  • Primary wing: keyboard, mouse, main monitor, and controls used throughout the day.
  • Secondary wing: laptop, document stand, charging station, audio interface, printer, or paperwork.
  • Rear edge: power strip, cable tray, and fixed cable anchors.
  • Open area under the corner: chair and leg clearance; keep it free of dangling leads and converter supports.

If the L reverses direction, mirror the arrangement. The correct side is determined by the user’s dominant reach and the location of the room’s power and network outlets, not by a universal left-versus-right rule.

Cable management that survives a moving desk

Static cable organization often fails because it is designed at one height. A standing desk needs slack that is controlled but visible. The goal is not to hide every wire; it is to ensure that no cable becomes taut, trapped, or disconnected anywhere in the travel range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build the cable path

  1. Inventory every connection. List monitor power, display cables, USB devices, laptop power, speakers, network, and any accessories attached to the monitor arms. Remove cables you do not use.
  2. Mount the power strip under the desk or in the desk tray. This keeps adapters off the work surface and lets one flexible lead run to the wall. Do not let the strip hang from its own cord.
  3. Route along the rear edge or underside. Use the desk’s tray, loops, clips, or adhesive anchors. Keep signal and power cables organized without crushing them under a clamp.
  4. Secure cables to moving arms or cable loops. Fasten them at several points so they follow the arm rather than forming a loose loop that can catch on the frame.
  5. Leave a service loop at every moving joint. The loop should be visible and long enough to accommodate the joint’s full motion, but not so large that it can reach a hinge, wheel, or chair.
  6. Separate the wall run from the moving bundle. The single lead to the wall should have a clear path and enough slack for the highest desk position.

Test before finishing the installation

With the desk empty of fragile items, raise it slowly to its highest position and lower it fully. Watch each joint, monitor arm, converter rail, and rear corner. A cable that looks tidy while seated may pull tight when raised. Repeat the test with both monitors connected and with the keyboard tray extended if one is installed.

After the first full cycle, inspect plugs and connectors. If a display flickers, a USB device disconnects, or the wall lead bows sharply, add slack or move the anchor rather than relying on a tighter tie. Recheck after moving the desk to a different part of the room.

Complete installation procedure

  1. Measure the room and desk. Record the inside-corner depth, both wing lengths, rear-edge thickness, wall clearance, outlet location, and the desk’s lowest and highest positions.
  2. Choose the primary viewing line. Sit and stand at the intended chair position, then mark the torso centerline on the corner surface with removable tape.
  3. Confirm monitor distance. Place a temporary screen or measure from your eyes to the planned display face. Keep at least 20 inches in both postures and add room for the arm or stand.
  4. Check the monitor specifications. Record each display’s width, stand-free weight, VESA pattern, and accessory load before selecting an arm or converter.
  5. Install the arm, stand, or converter. Use the supplied clamp or grommet hardware on a structurally suitable surface. Tighten it evenly; excessive force can damage a thin desktop.
  6. Mount the primary monitor. Center it on your torso, then adjust height and tilt while seated and standing. Lock or tension the arm only after the display is in its working position.
  7. Add the secondary monitor. Center the seam or the primary screen according to your work pattern, then angle the second panel inward. Confirm that the panels and arms clear each other through travel.
  8. Position the keyboard tray or keyboard. Place it beneath the primary display and set the surface near elbow height. Verify that the mouse remains beside it.
  9. Route the cables. Mount the power strip, run cables along the rear or underside, attach them to moving arms or loops, and create a visible service loop at every joint.
  10. Run the travel test. Cycle the desk from lowest to highest and back while watching for tension, snagging, wobble, connector movement, or a tray that strikes the frame.
  11. Mark the preferred heights. Once both postures are comfortable, record the seated and standing control settings so you can return to them quickly.

Stability and safety checks

Monitor weight, desk capacity, and arm capacity are separate limits. Add the weight of all displays and mounted accessories when considering the arm rating, but do not treat a desk’s total capacity as permission to exceed a per-arm limit.

  • Push lightly on the desk at the corner and at each monitor position. Excessive rocking indicates a frame, floor, clamp, or converter issue that cable ties cannot solve.
  • Verify that the clamp or grommet is fully supported by the desktop and is not sitting on a curved or unsupported edge.
  • Keep the keyboard tray within its published load limit, including the keyboard, mouse, and any wrist support placed on it.
  • Make sure the chair, feet, and floor mat cannot catch the wall lead or the underside cable bundle.
  • Recheck all fasteners after several height cycles; settling can change arm tension and clamp pressure.

Common problems and precise fixes

The monitor is too close in the corner

Move the arm or converter backward if the wall and cable path permit, reduce the screen angle, or use a smaller display. Do not solve a distance problem by leaning away from the keyboard; that creates a separate posture problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The monitor arm droops

Confirm the display’s stand-free weight, accessory load, and VESA plate installation. Adjust the arm’s tension according to its instructions. If the combined load exceeds the arm’s rating, use a higher-capacity arm or remove the accessory rather than increasing tension indefinitely.

The secondary screen causes neck rotation

Move the seam or primary panel back to your torso centerline and rotate the secondary screen inward. Keep frequently used windows on the centered display and reserve the angled panel for reference content.

The desk wobbles when raised

Check that the frame is level, feet are seated, and the monitor load is distributed. A heavy screen mounted far out on an arm creates more leverage than the same screen close to the upright. Shorten the arm reach where possible and keep dense equipment near the supported corner.

A cable becomes taut at standing height

Find the exact joint where tension begins, release the nearest tie, and add a controlled service loop. Check the wall lead separately from the monitor and USB bundle. Cycle the desk again before securing the loop permanently.

The keyboard tray feels cramped

Measure the tray against the keyboard and mouse together. The ARMSTSCORNR tray, for example, is 26.8 × 10.4 inches and rated for 5 pounds; a wide keyboard, wrist rest, and mouse may require more usable width than that footprint provides. Move the mouse onto the adjacent desktop only if it remains within comfortable reach and at the same general height.

Configurations for common work patterns

Single large monitor

Use the corner as a deep, centered station. A monitor arm is most valuable when the factory stand consumes the depth needed to keep the screen 20 inches away or when you need the display to rise with a keyboard tray.

Two compact monitors

Center the seam or primary screen, angle the outer display inward, and verify the converter or arms’ total width and weight limits. The StarTech corner converter’s stated support for two monitors up to 24 inches each and 28 pounds total display weight is an example of why both size and combined load must be checked.

Laptop plus external display

Place the external display on the torso centerline and move the laptop to the secondary wing or a riser. Keep the keyboard and mouse beneath the external display so the laptop does not force a persistent head turn. Route the laptop’s power and video cables through the same rear service path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Heavy peripherals or frequent device changes

Prefer an integrated tray or a desk with a dedicated cable channel when many adapters, docks, or audio devices remain connected. Keep the moving bundle short and label both ends of cables that are frequently unplugged.

Maintenance checklist

  • Cycle the desk through its full range at least monthly while watching every cable loop.
  • Inspect monitor-arm joints, VESA screws, clamps, and grommets for loosening.
  • Remove unused cables before adding another tie or clip.
  • Confirm that new webcams, lights, hubs, or speakers have not pushed an arm beyond its stand-free weight rating.
  • Re-measure the monitor distance if you change screen size, desk position, or room layout.
  • Keep the underside tray and power strip accessible; cable management should simplify maintenance rather than make every connection difficult to reach.
