For most modded Vintage Story communities, OXY.Games is the easiest starting point because it advertises one-click access to about 8,600 ModDB mods, automatic mod downloads for joining players, a Netherlands data center and a 6 GB tier aimed at an 8–12-player modded world. Kinetic Hosting is the stronger shortlist choice for complex modpacks and larger memory requirements, while Gravel Host has the lowest clearly stated entry price if you are comfortable uploading files yourself. BisectHosting is worth checking when location coverage matters, but its figures here come from an independent comparison rather than hands-on testing.

Why modded Vintage Story needs a third-party host
Vintage Story’s integrated hosting dashboard is suitable for an unmodded server, but the Vintage Story Wiki says it does not currently permit adding mods and that its servers are located only in central Europe. That creates two practical limits: you cannot build a modded community there, and players outside that region may experience avoidable latency.
A rented third-party server gives you access to the server’s file system, startup settings, console and backup tools. Those controls let you install a server-side or content mod, pin the version your world expects, restart after changes and restore an earlier world if an update goes wrong. The trade-off is that you, rather than the integrated service, are responsible for selecting compatible versions and keeping the server maintained.

The table is a screening tool, not a guarantee of performance. A modded world can be CPU-bound during generation, memory-hungry while exploring and storage-sensitive when backups or region files are written. The cheapest plan can therefore cost more in time if it leaves no room for the next mod or player.
How much RAM does a modded Vintage Story server need?
OXY.Games publishes a sizing rule of 1 GB base memory plus approximately 300 MB per player. It also recommends moving to a 6 GB plan for a modded world with 8–12 players. Four Seasons Hosting gives a separate rule of thumb: 6 GB can comfortably support roughly ten to fifteen players on a modded world, while 16 GB is intended for a large public server. These are provider heuristics, not controlled benchmarks. Mod complexity, world-generation settings, view distance, exploration speed, entity count and the number of simultaneous chunk loads can move the real requirement substantially.

Use the formula as a starting estimate
- Reserve the 1 GB base in the OXY.Games formula for the operating server and ordinary overhead.
- Multiply the expected concurrent player count by about 300 MB.
- Round up to the next available tier rather than buying a plan that leaves only a few hundred megabytes free.
- Add headroom when the pack introduces world generation, automation, large structures, new dimensions or unusually intensive entities.
For example, a lightly modded group of four has a formula result near 2.2 GB, so a 3 GB tier may be a reasonable starting point. A group that regularly reaches ten players should not treat the mathematical minimum as a target; the published 6 GB guidance is safer because exploration and mod initialization create peaks that an average calculation misses.
Signs that memory is the constraint
- The server becomes unresponsive when several players explore new terrain at once.
- Console logs show repeated memory pressure or the process is killed by the host.
- Tick or simulation delays appear only after adding a content-heavy mod.
- Restarts temporarily cure lag, but the problem returns as the world and mod caches grow.
Before upgrading, remove duplicate libraries, check that every mod matches the server’s Vintage Story version and inspect the host’s live console. If the issue appears during terrain generation rather than ordinary activity, CPU and storage performance may be the limiting resources instead of RAM.

The advertised Netherlands data center is a useful default for European players, and the provider states 99.99% node uptime. Treat that percentage as an infrastructure claim, not a promise that every individual world will be online: planned maintenance, configuration mistakes, mod crashes and a full disk can still interrupt a server. Ask how the figure is measured and whether it covers network, host node or your game process.

Its published formula and 8–12-player recommendation make the 6 GB tier the natural comparison point for a small established community, not necessarily the right choice for a public server.
Kinetic Hosting: broad headroom for heavy packs
Kinetic Hosting positions its Vintage Story service for complex, heavily modded worlds. Its published feature set includes one-click mod installation, automatic backups and 24/7 support. Those three controls address the operational risks that grow with a large pack: installing dependencies in the wrong order, losing a world after a bad update and waiting for help during an outage.
The listed RAM ladder begins at 4 GB and 8 GB and extends to a 124 GB plan. That range matters if your community is likely to outgrow a small tier, because you can scale memory without immediately migrating to another provider. Verify whether upgrading preserves the same IP address, files and backups, and whether a resize requires a shutdown.
For a heavy pack, ask support for the exact limits on CPU allocation, storage type, backup retention and restore time. A large RAM number alone does not establish that the server will generate terrain quickly or sustain a high simulation rate under load.

Gravel Host: lowest stated entry cost, manual administration
Gravel Host’s Homesteader listing combines 3 GB of RAM with an eight-player limit. The installation method is explicit: upload mod files into the server’s Mods folder through FTP or the built-in file manager, restart the server, and the mods are then pushed to clients. That is perfectly workable for a small group, especially when the pack changes infrequently.
Manual installation gives you control over files that are not in a one-click catalog, but it also creates more opportunities for mistakes. Keep a local copy of every mod, record its version and dependency, and upload one change at a time. If the server stops during startup, remove the most recent file first and inspect the console before changing several variables at once.
The listed price is attractive, but compare the cost of the next RAM tier and any paid backups before deciding that it is the lowest total cost. A cheap base plan that requires frequent upgrades or manual recovery can be more expensive in administration time.
BisectHosting: location-led choice
In an iTechGuides comparison published in September 2026, BisectHosting ranked first among 13 services with a 9.0/10 score. The page cited a 3 GB plan at $8.99 per month and 21 locations. Those numbers are useful for discovering a location-rich option, but they are comparison-page evidence rather than hands-on testing. Confirm the current location map, the exact Vintage Story plan, included memory, storage, backups and renewal price on the provider’s own order page.

Installing mods without breaking the world
One-click catalog workflow
- Create the server and select the Vintage Story version required by your community.
- Stop the server before changing the mod set. A stopped process prevents files from being written while you edit them.
- Open the host’s mod catalog and install the selected mod plus any listed dependencies.
- Check the installed versions against the pack’s release notes. Do not assume the newest file supports your server version.
- Start the server and watch the live console until world loading completes without errors.
- Join with a test account before announcing the update. Confirm that existing items, blocks, recipes and world regions load correctly.
- Tell players to let the host’s automatic download process finish before they connect to the changed world.
FTP or file-manager workflow
- Download the server-compatible mod files and dependencies from their creator’s release pages.
- Stop the server and create a backup of the world and configuration files.
- Open FTP, SFTP or the host’s file manager and navigate to the server’s
Modsfolder. - Upload the files without unzipping them unless the mod’s instructions explicitly require an extracted folder.
- Check filenames for duplicate versions. Keeping both an old and new release can cause startup conflicts.
- Restart the server and read the complete startup log. A successful process should finish loading rather than repeatedly crash and restart.
- Connect from a client with the matching mod set. If the host does not automate client distribution, provide players with the same versions and dependency files through a controlled channel.
Never test a major mod update only on the live world. Copy the world to a separate test instance, load it with the new files, and verify that machines, inventories and generated terrain behave as expected. Some mods alter saved data in ways that cannot be reversed simply by deleting the mod.
Backups, access and support to verify before purchase
A host’s feature list should answer operational questions, not just advertise a control panel. Confirm each item in writing if the order page is vague:
- Backup schedule: how often snapshots run, how many are retained, whether they are stored on separate hardware and whether you can download one.
- Restore process: whether a restore is self-service, whether it overwrites the live world and how long the server is offline.
- File access: browser file manager, FTP or SFTP credentials, maximum upload size and permission to edit configuration files.
- Console: whether you can send commands, see crash output and download logs while the server is running.
- Upgrade path: whether a RAM change keeps the same address, files, world and backup history.
- Support coverage: stated hours, response targets and whether support staff will help diagnose mod conflicts or only host-level faults.
- Refund terms: the eligibility window, exclusions for consumed service time, treatment of promotional pricing and whether cancellations stop renewal automatically.
- Network and storage: data-center city, included storage, disk type, traffic limits and any separate charge for additional backups.
Automatic backups are particularly valuable after a mod update, but they are not a substitute for an occasional downloaded copy. A provider account problem, mistaken deletion or expired service can affect every snapshot stored with the host.

List the countries or regions where most players live, then choose the nearest available location that offers the required plan. If the group is split between continents, measure the compromise with a short trial: have players connect at the same time, explore in different directions and report interaction delay. Do not judge only from a menu ping; world generation and concurrent movement create a more realistic load.
Player caps can be contractual rather than technical. Gravel Host’s published eight-player limit, for example, should be treated as the plan’s allowed capacity even if a lightly modded world might technically accept more connections. Ask whether spectators, administrators and automated clients count toward the limit.

Kinetic Hosting’s many RAM tiers make the cost of the next upgrade easy to compare, while Gravel Host’s low entry price should be evaluated alongside the time required for manual uploads. The BisectHosting figures cited by the comparison page need live verification before they are used as a budget.
A practical decision guide
Choose OXY.Games when
- Your group relies on ModDB releases and wants one-click installation.
- Automatic client downloads are more important than maximum customization.
- Most players are in or near the Netherlands and surrounding European regions.
- You are starting with a small community and want a published path toward a 6 GB modded tier.
Choose Kinetic Hosting when
- The pack is large, dependency-heavy or expected to grow.
- Automatic backups and round-the-clock support are core requirements.
- You want a wide range of RAM upgrades without immediately changing hosts.
Choose Gravel Host when

Troubleshooting common failures
The server crashes immediately after a mod upload
Stop repeated restart loops, remove the newest mod or dependency, and read the first error in the startup log rather than the final shutdown line. Check the mod’s required Vintage Story version, file format and dependency order. Restore the pre-change backup if the world was saved during a partial load.
Players receive a missing-mod or version-mismatch error
Compare the server’s filenames and versions with each player’s client. Remove duplicate releases, make sure the client download process completed and restart after correcting the set. A mod catalog can simplify distribution, but it cannot make incompatible versions compatible.
Exploration causes severe lag
Watch memory, CPU and storage indicators while a player generates new terrain. If memory is exhausted, move to the next RAM tier; if one core is saturated while memory remains available, ask the host about CPU allocation. Reduce simultaneous exploration during diagnosis and test the pack on a fresh copy of the world.
The world is lost or rolled back
Stop the server to prevent further writes, identify the newest intact snapshot and restore it according to the host’s procedure. Compare the restored world with a downloaded local copy. If no independent copy exists, ask support whether deleted snapshots or disk-level recovery are available, but do not assume recovery is possible.
Bottom line
Pick OXY.Games for the simplest ModDB-centered experience, Kinetic Hosting for heavy packs and a long upgrade runway, or Gravel Host for the lowest stated entry cost when manual file management is acceptable. Consider BisectHosting when regional coverage is the deciding factor, but validate its comparison-page figures. Whichever host you choose, size RAM for peak exploration rather than average occupancy, test every mod update on a copy of the world, and confirm renewal, backups and restore access before inviting players.
