For most Minecraft Java Edition servers that need plugins, choose Paper. Use Purpur if you want Paper’s plugin ecosystem plus extensive gameplay settings. Choose Fabric for a lightweight, performance-focused modded server, or Forge or NeoForge for a large modpack. Vanilla is the simplest route for unmodified survival, while Spigot is mainly worth keeping for a legacy setup or a plugin that specifically requires it.

The key decision is plugins versus mods: they belong to separate server ecosystems. Your choice affects what you can install, whether players need matching client-side software, and how much configuration and maintenance the server involves.

Choose by what you want to run

Paper, Spigot and Purpur are plugin-oriented server software. Fabric, Forge and NeoForge are mod-loader options. They are not interchangeable ways to install the same add-ons: a plugin built for Paper or Spigot does not run on Fabric or Forge, and a mod built for a mod loader does not become a Paper plugin.

That distinction should come before comparisons of speed or RAM. First identify the add-ons your server needs; then pick the software that supports them. Also check whether each add-on must be installed by players on their own clients. Plugins generally let players connect without installing the plugin themselves. Mods commonly require matching client-side mods, although the exact requirement depends on the mod.

Comparison at a glance

Software Best fit Add-on ecosystem Useful distinction
Vanilla Unmodified survival with a small group No plugins or mods Most direct option when you want the original server experience.
Paper Most plugin servers, including survival and public SMPs Paper/Spigot-compatible plugins; not Fabric or Forge mods Spigot-based software focused on server performance and timely updates.
Spigot Existing or legacy setups; a plugin that specifically requires it Spigot plugins; not Fabric or Forge mods Usually offers no compelling advantage over Paper for a new server.
Purpur Plugin servers needing more built-in gameplay controls Built on Paper; uses its plugin-oriented ecosystem Adds many configuration options for behaviours such as mobs, rideable entities and per-world rules.
Fabric Lightweight or performance-oriented modded servers Fabric mods; not Paper/Spigot plugins A lightweight loader with a fast-moving update and performance-mod ecosystem.
Forge Complex or large modpacks that target Forge Forge mods; not Paper/Spigot plugins A long-established loader with a large mod library; modded setups can take more time and memory than lightweight Fabric setups.
NeoForge Large modpacks that target NeoForge NeoForge mods; not Paper/Spigot plugins Another option for heavy modpacks; select it when the pack is built for it.

There is no single best server jar for every goal. The table’s ecosystem distinction matters more than a general ranking: a server cannot use software from one column to gain access to add-ons made for another.

Paper: the default for most plugin servers

Paper is a fork of Spigot and is the practical starting point for many Java Edition servers that want plugins. It is intended to improve server tick performance, includes asynchronous chunk loading, and is described as updating faster after Minecraft releases than Spigot. Those characteristics make it a strong general-purpose choice for a friends-only survival server or a public SMP that relies on plugins.

When Paper makes sense

  • You want a plugin-based server and do not have a reason to stay on a legacy setup.
  • You want a familiar Spigot-style plugin environment with performance-oriented server changes.
  • You want to start with a common baseline before deciding whether you need extra gameplay controls.

Do not treat a headline performance percentage as a guarantee. A comparison page has claimed a 40–60% Paper performance advantage over Spigot, but it gives no methodology, so that number is not a reliable promise for your hardware, world, player count or plugin set. No authoritative benchmark figure is established here. For a real server, measure the setup you intend to run rather than choosing from an unverified percentage.

Spigot: keep it for compatibility needs, not by default

Spigot remains relevant to existing servers and to a plugin or setup that specifically requires it. For a fresh plugin server, however, Paper is generally the more useful starting choice; Spigot is largely a legacy option and has no clear general advantage over Paper in the available comparison.

  • PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).

One practical difference is setup: Spigot is commonly built using BuildTools rather than obtained as a ready-to-run jar in the same way many server owners expect. Follow the current Spigot instructions if you need this route, and do not assume that installing Spigot will solve compatibility problems caused by a plugin actually requiring another version or platform.

Purpur: Paper plus more gameplay controls

Purpur is built on Paper and adds a large number of configuration options. Its extra toggles can adjust mob behaviour, make some entities rideable, and set rules by world. That makes it appealing when the server owner wants to customize gameplay without moving to a mod-loader ecosystem.

Choose Purpur when configuration is the goal

If your server already fits the Paper plugin model and you want more control over built-in behaviours, Purpur is a natural candidate. Its configuration is broader than Paper’s, so the benefit is flexibility rather than a requirement for every plugin server. If you do not need its additional options, Paper remains a simpler default.

Purpur’s own configuration documentation points readers to Paper documentation for other configuration files. That is a useful reminder that Purpur is a Paper-based option, not a separate mod ecosystem. Check the configuration reference for the version you are actually running before changing settings.

Fabric, Forge and NeoForge: choose the loader your mods require

Modded servers need a loader compatible with the intended mods or modpack. Fabric is typically the better fit for lightweight, performance-focused or technical setups. Forge and NeoForge are common choices for larger, heavier modpacks. The pack’s stated loader and Minecraft version should decide the matter; switching loaders does not make an incompatible pack work.

Fabric for lighter and performance-focused setups

Fabric is described as lightweight and fast to update. Its ecosystem includes performance-oriented mods such as Lithium, FerriteCore and Krypton. Those examples illustrate the kind of setup Fabric can support, but installing them does not guarantee a particular performance gain: actual results depend on the server, version, configuration and combination of mods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before choosing Fabric, check whether each mod is available for the server’s Minecraft version and whether players need that mod on their clients. A lightweight server-side setup may be easier to join than a pack that requires every player to install a large matching collection, but client requirements are determined by the mods, not by the loader name alone.

Forge for established, complex modpacks

Forge is an older loader with a large mod library and remains a strong fit when a complex modpack targets it. Compared with Fabric, Forge setups are described as slower to load and more memory-intensive. That is a general ecosystem-level distinction, not a fixed RAM requirement: the pack and machine determine what resources the server needs.

NeoForge for packs that target it

NeoForge also serves large modpacks. For a heavy pack, the useful question is not which loader wins in the abstract; it is which loader the pack author supports. Fabric is more associated with light and technical configurations, while Forge and NeoForge are more often associated with heavy packs.

Vanilla: the right choice when you want no add-ons

Vanilla is the unmodified server option. Choose it when a small group wants straightforward survival without plugins or mods. It avoids choosing between add-on ecosystems, but it also does not provide the custom server behaviour that leads people to Paper, Purpur or a mod loader.

A practical selection process

  1. Write down the must-have add-ons. Identify the plugins, mods or modpack you intend to run, including their supported Minecraft versions and required platform.
  2. Decide whether players should install client software. If you want ordinary clients and server-side extensions, investigate plugins. If the experience depends on mods, establish the client installation requirements before inviting players.
  3. Pick the matching ecosystem. Use Paper or Purpur for plugins, Fabric for a light mod setup, and Forge or NeoForge when the chosen pack calls for one. Use Vanilla if you want no add-ons.
  4. Check release and Java requirements. Requirements vary by Minecraft and server-software release. Confirm the current official instructions for the exact version before installing or upgrading; do not reuse an old Java requirement as a universal rule.
  5. Test the actual combination. Start with the intended world, add-ons and player configuration. Watch how it behaves on the target machine rather than relying on generic performance claims.

Performance, RAM and loading: what can and cannot be concluded

Paper’s performance-oriented changes are one reason it is commonly recommended over Spigot for new plugin servers. Fabric is commonly chosen for lightweight, performance-focused modding, while Forge and NeoForge commonly support heavier packs. These descriptions help narrow the options, but they do not establish a universal winner in tick rate, memory use or startup time.

Server performance depends on the complete workload: Minecraft version, world, player activity, view and simulation settings, plugins or mods, and hardware. The comparison material does not provide a verified, like-for-like benchmark, a standard RAM figure, or a reliable startup-time table for these options. Treat claims such as a fixed percentage advantage as unverified unless the publisher explains a reproducible test and its conditions.

Compatibility and migration pitfalls

Do not mix plugin and mod ecosystems

A Paper or Spigot plugin is not a Fabric or Forge mod, and a Fabric or Forge mod is not a Paper plugin. If an add-on is essential, confirm its platform before selecting server software. Also check the Minecraft version it supports; a matching platform alone does not ensure compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Back up before changing server software

A migration from Spigot or CraftBukkit to Paper around Minecraft 26.1 has been flagged as potentially changing world-directory handling. The exact behaviour is version-dependent, so do not assume a world will be found or handled identically after swapping server jars. Before migration, stop the server cleanly, make a separate copy of the complete server data and world folders, and verify that the new server loads the intended world before allowing normal play.

  1. Stop the existing server and retain an untouched backup of its files and worlds.
  2. Install the intended server software and version in a separate test location when possible.
  3. Point it at a copy of the world data, then confirm the expected world appears and loads correctly.
  4. Check plugins and configuration on the new software before treating the migration as complete.
  5. Keep the original backup until the migrated server has been verified.

Recheck release requirements during upgrades

Java and server-software requirements can change between Minecraft releases. Confirm the required Java version and supported add-on versions from the official documentation for the exact release you plan to run. In particular, do not infer a current requirement from a version number or from another server platform’s instructions.

Recommendations by server goal

Your goal Starting choice Reason
Survival with friends or a public SMP using plugins Paper A general-purpose plugin server and the default recommendation for most new plugin setups.
Paper-style server with customized mob, entity or world behaviour Purpur Builds on Paper and adds many gameplay and configuration options.
Light mods or a performance-focused technical setup Fabric Lightweight loader with a performance-mod ecosystem.
Large modpack Forge or NeoForge, as required by the pack Both serve heavy modpack use; the pack’s supported loader should control the choice.
Existing Spigot setup or a plugin that explicitly requires Spigot Spigot Retains the legacy environment or addresses a specific compatibility requirement.
Unmodified survival Vanilla No plugin or mod ecosystem is needed.

Final decision

If you are starting a Java Edition plugin server and have no special compatibility constraint, use Paper. Move to Purpur when its extra controls solve a real gameplay need. For a modded server, choose the loader named by the mods or pack, with Fabric a sensible starting point for lighter setups and Forge or NeoForge for packs built around them. Choose Vanilla for an unmodified experience, and reserve Spigot for legacy or explicit compatibility cases.
