DriveBackupV2 is the best all-around backup plugin for most Paper and Spigot servers. It supports Bukkit-family servers from Minecraft 1.8 through 1.21.x, scheduled and interval jobs, configurable retention, and destinations including Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, (S)FTP and S3-compatible storage. Advanced Backups is the better choice when you need differential or incremental backups and command-line restoration of one file or a complete world. PaperBackup is a useful specialist option for Paper or Purpur 1.21.1 on Java 21 when you want to stream ZIP archives directly to Google Drive, but its author does not guarantee plain Spigot support.

A backup plugin is only useful if it can restore the data your server actually needs. Before selecting one, match its platform and Minecraft-version support, decide whether full or incremental copies fit your storage budget, confirm where copies will be stored, and perform a test restore on the same server software and plugin combination you run in production.

What a Minecraft backup plugin must protect

A server backup is more than a copy of the main world folder. A usable recovery set normally includes the worlds and dimensions, player and plugin data, server configuration, permissions, scripts, resource files and any database or external data your plugins rely on. A plugin that only archives one directory can leave you rebuilding configuration by hand after a disk failure.

Look for four separate capabilities:

  • Coverage: the ability to select arbitrary files and folders, not just the default world.
  • Scheduling: a regular interval or clock-based job that runs without an administrator being online.
  • Retention: automatic deletion limits for local and remote copies so a successful schedule does not eventually fill the disk or cloud quota.
  • Recovery: a documented way to retrieve an archive and restore either the whole server or only the damaged file or world.

Also decide how much temporary disk space a job may consume. A conventional full ZIP generally needs room for the archive while the source files remain in place. Differential and incremental schemes can reduce repeated data, while a streaming design can send an archive to remote storage without retaining the complete archive locally.

DriveBackupV2: the broadest Paper and Spigot choice

Compatibility and scope

DriveBackupV2 documentation describes support for Bukkit, Spigot, Paper and Purpur servers running Minecraft 1.8–1.21.x. That range makes it the safest starting point for networks that still operate older worlds or use more than one server implementation. Compatibility is tied to the exact plugin build and server version, so check the current project documentation before installing on a newly released Minecraft version.

The plugin can back up arbitrary server files and folders. You can therefore include world directories, plugins, configuration files, permissions data and other application files instead of being limited to a single world. The project documentation also describes remote FTP sources and MySQL database backups, which is important when a plugin stores player data outside the filesystem.

Destinations and schedules

The Spigot listing names Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox and remote (S)FTP uploads. The project repository additionally documents S3-compatible storage. You can keep a local copy for fast recovery and send another copy to a separate service, reducing the risk that a failed server disk destroys both the live data and its backup.

Backups can run on a schedule or at a repeating interval. The listing and wiki state that the default schedule is hourly. Treat that as a starting default, not a universal policy: a busy survival server may need a shorter interval for player builds, while a low-activity server may prefer fewer jobs to reduce upload traffic.

Retention and storage planning

DriveBackupV2 deletes old backups when configured limits are exceeded. Set separate limits for local and remote storage where the configuration allows it, and estimate the total before enabling a frequent schedule. For example, retaining 24 hourly copies preserves roughly one day of short-term recovery points; adding daily or weekly copies gives protection against a problem that is discovered several days later. The exact configuration keys and limits depend on the plugin release, so use the names in the version you install rather than copying an older example.

Authentication and restore duties

Cloud destinations require the server administrator to link an account. Complete that authorization while logged in with an account intended for server operations, record where credentials or tokens are stored, and restrict access to the server directory. A green “upload completed” message is not proof of recoverability. Download one archive to a separate machine, open it, and restore a disposable test server from it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to choose it

Choose DriveBackupV2 when one plugin must serve both Paper and Spigot, when you need more than one remote destination, or when you want scheduled retention without designing an external script. It is also the most flexible option of the three for backing up non-world files and database content.

Advanced Backups: best for granular and space-efficient recovery

Backup modes

Advanced Backups supports three modes:

  • ZIP: a conventional complete archive, simple to move and inspect but potentially the most expensive in disk space and upload time.
  • Differential: stores changes relative to a baseline full backup. Restoring normally requires that baseline plus the relevant differential set.
  • Incremental: stores changes since the previous backup. It can minimize each individual job but creates a dependency chain, so losing one link can affect later restores.

Use full ZIP jobs when portability and straightforward recovery matter more than storage efficiency. Differential or incremental jobs are attractive for large worlds with modest daily changes, provided you retain the required base files together and periodically test the chain.

Version range and restore granularity

The directory listing covers Minecraft 1.7.10 through 1.21.4 and identifies both Paper and Spigot support. Its command-line tool can restore a single file or an entire world. File-level restoration is useful when one configuration file or plugin data file is damaged; a world-level restore lets you roll back a map without replacing unrelated server settings.

Dimension warning

The Hangar listing warns of a known end and Nether backup issue when server software or plugin combinations place those dimensions outside the main world directory. Do not assume that a successful archive contains every dimension. After installation, inspect an archive for the Overworld, Nether and End paths used by your particular server, especially if you use a custom world manager or a nonstandard directory layout.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

When to choose it

Advanced Backups is the strongest fit when restoration precision is a requirement or when repeated full archives would consume too much storage. It demands more operational discipline: document the base-plus-change files needed for a restore, keep them together, and test the command-line recovery process before an incident.

PaperBackup: a focused Google Drive option for Paper and Purpur

Requirements

PaperBackup’s listing specifies Paper or Purpur 1.21.1 and Java 21. It explicitly says plain Spigot support is not guaranteed. That makes it a targeted choice for a current Paper-family server, not a drop-in answer for a mixed or legacy network.

Streaming design

PaperBackup creates ZIP backups, runs them on a schedule and supports manual commands. In Google Drive mode, the project repository says it streams the ZIP directly to Drive instead of first creating a complete local backup archive. This can reduce peak local disk usage, which is useful on a small VPS or a server whose world is larger than the free space available for a temporary archive.

Streaming does not eliminate the need for capacity planning: the live world still changes during a run, network bandwidth determines upload time, and the remote account must have enough quota for retained archives. Verify that the resulting Drive file can be downloaded and opened before relying on the workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to choose it

Choose PaperBackup for a single Paper or Purpur 1.21.1 server on Java 21 when Google Drive is your required destination and minimizing local archive space matters. Choose another plugin for plain Spigot, older versions, multiple cloud providers or broad file-and-database coverage.

Install a backup plugin safely on Paper or Spigot

PaperMC says plugins are commonly obtained from Hangar, Modrinth or BukkitDev and installed by placing the platform-appropriate JAR in the server’s plugins folder. Apply the following process to any of the three choices.

  1. Record your environment. Write down the Minecraft version, server software and build, Java version, world folder names, dimensions, plugin list and any external databases. This record determines whether the advertised compatibility applies to your installation.
  2. Make a manual copy first. Stop the server cleanly, copy the complete server directory to storage outside the live machine, and keep that copy until the new plugin has passed a restore test.
  3. Download the correct JAR. Use the plugin’s current listing on Hangar, Modrinth or BukkitDev, select the build matching your server, and avoid mixing a Paper-only build into a Spigot instance.
  4. Install while the server is stopped. Place the JAR in plugins, start the server, and inspect the startup log for dependency, Java or version errors. Stop the server again before editing generated configuration.
  5. Define the backup scope. Include every world and dimension, plugins, configuration files, permissions, scripts and any database data the plugin supports. Exclude caches and temporary files only when you know they can be recreated.
  6. Set a schedule and retention. Pick an interval based on how much player progress you can afford to lose, then set limits that fit both local disk and remote quota. Keep at least one copy outside the server host.
  7. Configure authentication. Link Google Drive or another destination using an account dedicated to server backups where possible. Restrict token and configuration-file permissions.
  8. Run a manual backup. Wait for the job to finish, confirm the archive or remote object exists, and check its timestamp and size. An empty or unusually small archive signals a scope or permission problem.
  9. Perform a test restore. Download the backup to a separate directory, start a test server on the same software and version, and verify that players, worlds, inventories, permissions and plugin data load correctly.

How to validate a backup before disaster strikes

Check archive contents

Open at least one recent archive with a ZIP utility or the plugin’s inspection command. Confirm that the Overworld, Nether and End are present under the paths your server actually uses. Check a recent player-data file, the main server configuration and important plugin folders. For external databases, verify that a database dump or supported database backup is present rather than assuming filesystem files are sufficient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test a clean restore

Use a separate machine or directory so the test cannot overwrite production. Restore the files, use the same Java major version and server build, install the same plugin set, and start with the server stopped while files are copied. Join as a test player, inspect inventories and permissions, travel to each dimension, and verify that scheduled tasks and plugin data work.

Measure the recovery point

Note the timestamp of the newest successful backup and compare it with the maximum data loss your community can accept. If an hourly default is too old for active building, shorten the interval; if uploads overlap, reduce scope, use an incremental-capable plugin or increase the interval so one job finishes before the next begins.

Common failure modes and fixes

The plugin loads but no backup appears

  • Check the startup log for a disabled plugin, missing dependency or unsupported Java version.
  • Confirm the schedule is enabled and the server clock is correct.
  • Run a manual job and inspect the configured destination path and permissions.
  • Check free disk space and remote quota; a full destination can look like a scheduling failure.

Google Drive authorization fails

Repeat the account-linking flow with the intended account, ensure the server can reach the authorization service, and protect the generated token or credential file. After authorization, perform a small manual backup and verify the file in Drive before enabling long retention.

The archive is too large

Remove only reproducible caches, reduce the number of retained full copies, move older copies to lower-cost storage, or use Advanced Backups’ differential or incremental modes. PaperBackup’s direct Drive streaming can reduce temporary local space, but it does not reduce the final remote archive size.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nether or End files are missing

Inspect the actual world-directory layout and compare it with the paths included in the archive. Advanced Backups has a documented issue when server software or plugins move those dimensions outside the main world directory. Reconfigure the scope, update only after checking compatibility, and keep a manual copy until a test restore includes all dimensions.

A restore starts but data is inconsistent

Never copy live world files while the production server is writing them. Stop the server cleanly before backup or restore, restore the complete required set from a consistent point, and avoid mixing files from different backup timestamps. For incremental or differential sets, keep the base and every dependent change set together.

Choosing by server profile

Mixed versions or multiple server types

Select DriveBackupV2 first because its documentation spans Bukkit, Spigot, Paper and Purpur from 1.8 through 1.21.x and supports several remote destinations. Maintain a per-server compatibility record rather than assuming one configuration works unchanged across the network.

Large worlds and limited storage

Consider Advanced Backups with differential or incremental jobs, then test the full restore chain. If the main problem is temporary local space on a current Paper server, PaperBackup’s direct-to-Drive streaming may help, provided the 1.21.1 and Java 21 requirements match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Strict file-level recovery needs

Choose Advanced Backups when restoring one file without replacing a whole world is a routine requirement. Document the command-line procedure and keep a copy of the exact plugin build used to create the backup set.

Simple Google Drive workflow

PaperBackup is the narrowest fit: Paper or Purpur 1.21.1, Java 21 and Google Drive. For Spigot, older Minecraft versions or additional destinations, use a plugin whose listing explicitly covers those requirements instead.

Maintenance checklist

  • Review plugin and server compatibility after every Minecraft or Java upgrade.
  • Check that the newest scheduled job completed and that retention has not deleted all usable restore points.
  • Keep at least one copy on storage separate from the live server host.
  • Run a clean restore test after changing worlds, dimensions, database schemas or major plugins.
  • Recheck cloud authorization when credentials, ownership or security policies change.
  • Document who can access backup credentials and where the restore instructions are stored.
