Better MC is the safest all-around starting point for a new modded Minecraft player if you want the familiar survival game with more places to explore, structures, bosses, biomes and quality-of-life changes. The newest build identified as of October 14, 2026, is BMC5 for NeoForge and Minecraft 1.21.1. If you want a guided tour of modded play, consider Enigmatica 9 or Craft to Exile: Harmony; if you want more performance without changing the game much, choose Fabulously Optimized. The right choice depends on how much new content you want, whether you prefer quests, and what your computer can handle.
What should a new player install first?
For most players moving from vanilla Minecraft, start with Better MC. It keeps a broadly familiar survival-and-exploration feel while adding more content to discover, rather than asking you to learn a highly specialized challenge or a large collection of technical systems immediately. Its current build matters: BMC5 targets NeoForge and Minecraft 1.21.1, while BMC4 is a separate Forge build for Minecraft 1.20.1.
Choose a different pack if your main goal is more specific. Fabulously Optimized is aimed at improving performance while retaining vanilla gameplay; it is not a content-heavy adventure pack. Enigmatica 9 and Craft to Exile: Harmony provide quest-based guidance. SkyFactory 4 changes the premise to a skyblock start, and Cobblemon is for players who want Pokémon-style creature collecting. All the Mods 9 or 10 offers much broader modded scope, but the larger packs are a tougher first choice for a modest PC or someone who wants a simple introduction.

Check the pack’s current listing for its supported Minecraft version, loader, included features and any requirements before installing it.

How to choose based on the kind of play you want
Stay close to vanilla, but add things to find
Pick Better MC if you want the basic rhythm of survival Minecraft—explore, gather resources, build and fight—while discovering more structures, biomes and bosses. It is a better fit for a player who wants the world to feel less familiar without starting with a narrow challenge or a complicated technical pack.
Fabulously Optimized is the alternative when the priority is performance, not more content. Its described goal is vanilla gameplay with performance improvements, so do not choose it expecting an expanded set of adventures or a new quest progression.

Questbooks and guides make a pack easier to approach because they give you a path through unfamiliar additions. Enigmatica 9 is described as providing quest guides for each mod, while Craft to Exile: Harmony uses a quest book to explain its added mods. All the Mods 9 also has a questbook, but its broad collection may still feel like a lot to take in if you are entirely new to modded play.

A questbook is guidance, not a requirement to play in a prescribed order. If you prefer to experiment, you can explore freely; if you are unsure what an item or system is for, use the pack’s in-game guide as your first reference.
Try a different starting premise or theme
SkyFactory 4 suits players who want a skyblock-style start with constraints rather than an ordinary world to roam. Cobblemon is the thematic choice for Pokémon-style creature collecting. These are not direct replacements for a vanilla-plus exploration pack: choose them because the different premise or theme is the point.
Save the biggest collections for when you want more complexity
All the Mods 9 and 10 collect many mods and offer a much broader experience. ATM9 is described as having sensible defaults and a questbook. ATM10 is described as larger and more complex; one source reported more than 13 million downloads and over 500 mods, but those figures are not a measure of how easy it is to learn or how well it will run on your computer. If this is your first modpack, start smaller unless the breadth itself is what you want.

Better MC versions: BMC5 versus BMC4
“Better MC” is not a single universal download. Its builds target different combinations of Minecraft version and mod loader, so the pack name alone is not enough to choose a file.

These rows are not interchangeable versions of the same installation. A launcher profile set to Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1 will not satisfy BMC5’s NeoForge 1.21.1 requirements. Select the exact pack file and make sure the launcher profile uses the Minecraft version and loader that file specifies.
Some third-party guides describe other Better MC builds, including Fabric options, but accounts of the available loaders and version ranges conflict. Current Fabric build versions were not established here. Do not choose a Fabric build based only on a general claim that Fabric can feel faster or smoother; verify that a current, matching pack release exists on its official listing first.

Install a pack without mixing up its version or loader
- Choose the pack and its intended build. Open its current official listing, such as its CurseForge page, and identify the Minecraft version, loader and specific file or release you intend to use. For Better MC, distinguish BMC5 NeoForge 1.21.1 from BMC4 Forge 1.20.1.
- Use a launcher that supports that pack. Install or open a launcher that can install the selected modpack and create a separate profile for it. Follow the launcher’s own import or install flow rather than copying files from another pack.
- Check the profile settings before the first launch. Confirm that the profile shows the pack’s Minecraft version and loader. A loader mismatch or a different Minecraft version is a sign to correct the profile or select another pack file—not to keep trying random downloads.
- Start the pack and allow its first setup to finish. A modded profile has more components to load than an unmodified game. Let the launcher complete its installation and first launch without interrupting it; if it fails, record the displayed error and verify the chosen build and profile settings.
- Begin with a new world and test performance. Explore for a short session before moving a valued world into the pack. If performance is poor, reduce in-game graphics settings, close other demanding applications and consider a lighter pack rather than assuming the computer can handle every large collection.
Launcher labels and menus vary, so a single exact button path cannot be stated for every launcher. The reliable checks are the pack’s own release details and the version and loader shown in the profile.

There is no single authoritative RAM figure for all the packs in this shortlist. Requirements depend on the pack release, game version, launcher and the rest of the computer, and the available recommendations vary. Treat a precise memory number from an unofficial guide as a suggestion to verify against the pack’s current listing, not as a universal minimum.
As a practical first choice, lighter packs such as Fabulously Optimized and SkyFactory 4 are described as safer for modest PCs. Better MC is also identified as a lighter option relative to the largest collections, though performance varies with the selected build and hardware. All the Mods 10 is the less suitable starting point when memory or overall system capacity is limited.

- If the game launches but feels slow: lower graphics settings and test again before changing the pack. Close other resource-intensive applications.
- If the launcher cannot allocate or load the pack: check that the installed profile is the intended pack build and that the launcher has completed its setup. Consult that release’s requirements rather than guessing a RAM allocation.
- If the pack runs poorly on a modest machine: try a lighter option. A large pack’s mod count does not make it a better beginner experience.
Common first-install mistakes and how to avoid them
Downloading the right name but the wrong build
A pack can have multiple releases for different versions or loaders. Check all three identifiers—pack build, Minecraft version and loader—on the listing and in the launcher profile. The Better MC BMC5 and BMC4 examples show why the name alone is insufficient.

Third-party lists can describe different releases or become stale. Better MC loader and version descriptions conflict across some guides, and Fabric builds were not confirmed in the available official details. Use the current pack listing to settle the choice rather than relying on a broad version range in a blog post.
Choosing a large pack before deciding whether you want its complexity
All the Mods 10 is described as larger and more complex than ATM9. A large collection gives you more systems to explore but also more unfamiliar content, and it has heavier memory needs. If you want an accessible introduction, begin with Better MC or a quest-guided pack instead.
Expecting an optimization pack to add adventures
Fabulously Optimized is described as keeping vanilla gameplay while improving performance. If your goal is new structures, biomes, bosses or a quest path, choose a content pack instead.
Which pack should you pick?
- Pick Better MC BMC5 for the strongest general-purpose starting recommendation when your launcher and computer support NeoForge 1.21.1.
- Pick Enigmatica 9 or Craft to Exile: Harmony if learning through an in-game quest guide is more important than staying close to an open-ended vanilla experience.
- Pick Fabulously Optimized if you want to keep vanilla gameplay and prioritize performance.
- Pick SkyFactory 4 if you specifically want a constrained skyblock start, or Cobblemon if creature collecting is the appeal.
- Pick All the Mods 9 or 10 if you already want a broad, complex modded collection and your system can handle it; ATM10 is the more complex option described here.
Before downloading, confirm the current release on the pack’s official CurseForge or Modrinth listing, then match its Minecraft version and loader in your launcher. That check matters more than choosing a pack solely from a ranked list.
