For a server where players want less punishment after death, enable keepInventory; for a world where creepers and similar mobs should not alter blocks, disable mobGriefing; and for a server where command-block messages should not clutter the console, disable commandBlockOutput. The exact gamerule spelling depends on Minecraft edition and version, so check the rules available on your running server before applying a command.
Choose gamerules for the kind of server you run
There is no universal best set of gamerules. A rule that makes a cooperative building world more relaxed may remove a challenge that a survival group wants to keep. Start with the experience you are trying to create, change only the rules that support it, and check the result in the live world.

The table is a use-case guide, not a measured ranking. Gamerule availability, spelling, and effects can depend on edition and version; a name in an example is not proof that your server accepts that spelling.
Check the rule names and current values first
Java gamerule names have a version-related spelling caveat. Older Java material uses camelCase forms such as keepInventory and mobGriefing. Recent Java versions use snake_case forms such as keep_inventory and mob_griefing. The precise version boundary is not established consistently in the available sources, and it is not established whether newer builds still accept the older aliases. Bedrock is reported to use the lowercase form keepinventory for the inventory rule. Do not assume the same spelling works across Java and Bedrock.

- Open a command-capable session. On a server, send the command through the server console or as an operator in-game. Cheats must be enabled for the sender, or the sender must have operator permissions on the server.
- Ask the running server which rules it recognizes. Enter
/gameruleand use the Tab key to list available rules. Use the name presented by that server rather than copying a spelling from a guide written for a different release. - Query the setting before changing it. Use the recognized rule name without a value—for example,
/gamerule keep_inventory—to display its current setting. If that spelling is not accepted, check the server’s listed names and try the version-appropriate form. - Set the value only after confirming the name. Gamerule syntax is
/gamerule <rule name> [value]. Java command arguments are case-sensitive, so preserve the spelling and capitalization shown by the server. - Query it again. Run the rule command without a value after changing it to confirm the value the server reports. This verifies the setting, not whether every gameplay consequence matches your group’s expectations.
For version uncertainty, the in-server list is the practical first check: it reflects the rules exposed by the server you are actually administering. If a command fails, do not repeatedly guess capitalization or assume a rule was renamed in a particular update. Check the server version and edition, use the listed spelling, and make sure the command sender has the required permissions.
Keep player items after death with keepInventory
When it fits
Set the inventory rule to true when the server’s priority is avoiding item loss on death. This can suit a cooperative group that values building or exploration more than recovering dropped belongings. It changes the consequence of death, so it is a poor fit if losing carried items is an intentional part of the server’s challenge.

/gamerule keepinventory trueUse only the spelling your server recognizes. Then query the same rule without a value and confirm that it reports true. The sources available here do not settle whether older Java spellings continue to work as aliases on newer versions, so do not rely on backward compatibility.
Stop certain mobs from changing blocks with mobGriefing
When it fits
Set the mob-griefing rule to false when you want to prevent creepers, ghasts, and similar mobs from changing blocks. This addresses block alteration by those mobs; it is not a general statement that hostile mobs cannot appear or that all mob-related effects stop. If your server depends on mob interactions with the environment, consider how that rule fits the world before changing it.

/gamerule mobGriefing falseQuery the recognized rule afterward to check the server reports false. If the command is rejected, return to the server’s rule list and use the exact name it displays rather than assuming the rule is missing or that another edition’s syntax applies.
Reduce command-block output sent to the console
When it fits
The commandBlockOutput rule controls whether command block output is sent to the console. Set it to false if suppressing that output is the goal. The available information does not establish a default value, so check the current value on your server rather than assuming the rule starts enabled.
Set and verify it
If your server recognizes the name below, enter:
/gamerule commandBlockOutput falseThen query the rule without a value and confirm the reported setting. Keep the exact capitalization accepted by your server; Java arguments are case-sensitive.
Be cautious with doMobSpawning
doMobSpawning is often raised as a candidate when an administrator wants to affect hostile-mob spawning. However, the available source review did not confirm what the rule does or establish its scope, so this guide does not recommend setting it to false as a verified way to stop hostile spawns. Check the in-game description or a reliable, version-specific reference before changing it, and do not infer its behavior from the rule name alone.
Troubleshoot a gamerule command that does not work
- Unknown or invalid rule: Check the edition and version, then use
/gameruleplus Tab to find the accepted spelling on that server. Java naming has shifted between camelCase and snake_case in recent-version material. - Command is unavailable: The sender needs cheats enabled or operator status on a server. Try the server console or have an operator run the command.
- Command appears accepted, but the outcome is unexpected: Query the rule without a value to confirm the stored setting. Then check that the selected rule addresses the effect you intended; for example, the mob-griefing rule concerns blocks changed by certain mobs, not a verified setting for stopping mob spawns.
- Unsure whether a change took effect: Use the recognized rule name with no value to read the current setting. Do not treat a successful command response as confirmation of a broader gameplay effect than the rule is known to control.
A simple selection process for server admins
- Decide what you want to change for players: item loss after death, block damage or alteration by certain mobs, or command-block output sent to the console.
- Match that outcome to the corresponding rule above rather than changing several settings at once.
- Check the available rule names and current value on the server itself.
- Change one setting, then query it to confirm the stored value.
- Ask players or observe the relevant situation in the world to decide whether the change supports the server’s intended style. Revise the rule if it does not.
This approach keeps a useful distinction between a confirmed setting and a desired result: the command can verify the first, while the group still needs to decide whether that rule is right for its world.
