PowerNukkitX is the best starting point for a plugin-heavy Minecraft Bedrock server when you need a Java-based API, an established Nukkit lineage, and active modernisation. Choose Official Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS) instead when matching Mojang/Microsoft behavior and update timing matters more than a traditional plugin catalogue. Choose PocketMine-MP for PHP-based custom games and lightweight communities, provided you test mechanics that must behave like vanilla.
There is no single winner for every Bedrock server. The right choice depends on vanilla fidelity, the exact plugins you need, update timing, world migration risk, and the runtime your administrators can support.
For hosting a resulting Bedrock server, Godlike.Host offers Minecraft Bedrock hosting with its own game panel, free DDoS protection, up to three free backups a day with restore, and SFTP/FTP access.
Quick answer: which Bedrock server software should you use?
| Your priority | Best starting choice | Why it fits | Launch check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official vanilla behavior | Official Bedrock Dedicated Server | Microsoft-distributed Bedrock server with the official configuration path | Confirm that Script APIs or add-ons provide every administration feature you need |
| Modern plugin API | PowerNukkitX | Open-source Java framework with a documented plugin system and modern API | Test every plugin against the current PowerNukkitX API and registry behavior |
| PHP custom games | PocketMine-MP | PHP plugin API suited to minigames and lightweight plugin communities | Verify mechanics and protocol support because game behavior is reimplemented |
| Existing Nukkit investment | Nukkit or PowerNukkitX | Related Java ecosystem and a documented world-migration path | Back up worlds and audit plugins for legacy/API incompatibilities |
For a public server, “supports plugins” is not enough. A plugin must be maintained for your exact server build and the Bedrock client protocol you intend to support. Plugin names alone do not prove compatibility.
#1 Best Overall
What to compare before choosing a Bedrock server
Evaluate each implementation on five practical axes. Public networks should add a sixth check: whether the specific plugins are maintained for the exact server and client versions.
Vanilla fidelity
Official BDS is the reference point for Bedrock behavior. Alternative servers reimplement some or all of the game, so redstone timing, mob behavior, world generation, inventories, portals, and other mechanics can differ. If an ordinary survival world must behave exactly as players expect from the official game, start with BDS and test any scripts or add-ons against that requirement.
Plugin API and ecosystem
PowerNukkitX and PocketMine-MP expose traditional plugin APIs. BDS instead provides JavaScript Script APIs and add-on mechanisms. Scripts can connect gameplay to external services, such as web-based leaderboards, and can support administrative tooling, but they are not the same drop-in third-party plugin model offered by PocketMine or Nukkit-family software.

Update and protocol timing
Bedrock clients update frequently. A server can have a good API and still be unusable if it does not recognise the client protocol your players run. Check the project’s current release notes, protocol support, and plugin build dates before opening a public network. PowerNukkitX documentation describes fast Bedrock updates, but that is a project claim to verify against the release you will deploy.
World and plugin migration risk
Keep a restorable copy of every world before changing software. A world may load successfully while plugins silently fail, registry IDs change, or gameplay systems behave differently. PowerNukkitX documents a shared region-based world format with Nukkit, which makes basic world loading practical, but it separately warns about advanced plugin incompatibilities.
Runtime and platform requirements
Choose software your team can patch, monitor, and restore. PowerNukkitX documents Windows, Linux, and macOS support. Microsoft’s BDS getting-started guidance lists Windows Server 2016 or later among supported environments. PocketMine-MP uses PHP, while PowerNukkitX and Nukkit use Java; that runtime decision affects deployment images, upgrade procedures, and plugin development.
Official Bedrock Dedicated Server: the compatibility baseline
What BDS provides
Microsoft distributes Bedrock Dedicated Server as downloadable server software. Configuration uses text files such as server.properties, and Microsoft’s getting-started documentation lists Windows Server 2016 or later among supported environments. BDS is the closest baseline for official Bedrock behavior and update alignment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How its scripting model differs from plugins
Microsoft documents JavaScript Script APIs for BDS. They can connect gameplay to external services, including web-based leaderboards, and can be used to build administrative tools and custom logic. Treat this as a scripting and add-on platform rather than assuming that every plugin from a third-party Bedrock server can be installed.
When BDS is the right choice
- Vanilla-like survival mechanics are more important than a large plugin catalogue.
- You want Microsoft’s official server distribution and configuration path.
- Your custom features can be implemented with Script APIs or add-ons.
- Your team prefers to track official client and server updates directly.
Where BDS is a poor fit
The comparison evidence identifies BDS as having no traditional plugin system. If your launch plan depends on installing established PocketMine or Nukkit plugins without rewriting them, BDS does not meet that requirement. Design the feature in the Script API first, or select a plugin-oriented implementation.
PowerNukkitX: the strongest plugin-first option
What it is
PowerNukkitX describes itself as open-source, modern, and performance-focused Bedrock server software based on Nukkit. The project extends that foundation with compatibility, stability, performance, and plugin-development improvements. Its documentation lists Windows, Linux, and macOS support and positions the software for private servers as well as larger public networks.
Why it leads for plugin-heavy projects
The project’s comparison documentation lists a plugin system, modern API, open-source code, fast Bedrock updates, and active community support. Those are documentation claims, not a guarantee that every plugin is current. The decisive advantage is the combination of a Java plugin model and a project that is actively modernising the older Nukkit approach.

The registry caveat
PowerNukkitX is not a universal drop-in replacement for every Nukkit plugin. Its migration documentation warns that advanced plugins interacting with block, item, or entity registries can fail under the modernised registry system. Depending on the plugin, the fix may require a newer release, recompilation, or namespace changes. Basic legacy plugins may work while registry-heavy plugins need deliberate migration.
Best use cases
- Java-based survival or creative servers that need a conventional plugin API.
- Custom game modes and public networks with developers who can update code.
- Teams moving from Nukkit and willing to test plugins rather than assuming compatibility.
- Operators who need a Bedrock-native server instead of a Java server with a protocol bridge.
Pre-launch validation
- Record the PowerNukkitX release, Java runtime, Bedrock client range, and every plugin version.
- Install the server on a staging instance with a copy of the production world.
- Test login, permissions, inventories, entities, redstone, portals, scheduled tasks, and any custom registries.
- Give special attention to plugins that register blocks, items, or entities.
- Keep the prior server and world backup available until players have completed a real-world acceptance test.
PocketMine-MP: a practical PHP choice for custom games
What it is
PocketMine-MP is a PHP-based Bedrock server implementation with its own plugin API. It is commonly used for custom minigames and lightweight plugin-driven communities where rapid PHP development and a focused game mode matter more than complete vanilla parity.
Where it works well
- PHP developers who want to write and maintain server plugins.
- Minigame networks with controlled maps and predictable game rules.
- Small communities that need a manageable plugin layer rather than a large survival simulation.
What must be tested
PocketMine-MP reimplements game behavior, so not every vanilla mechanic is identical to official BDS. Before promising a survival experience, test mob behavior, world generation, redstone, portals, inventories, scheduled events, and the protocol support of the exact release. A minigame that never uses those systems may work perfectly while a technical-survival server exposes differences quickly.

Nukkit and other Nukkit-family projects
Why the family still matters
Nukkit provides the historical Java plugin ecosystem from which PowerNukkitX is derived. If your team already owns Java code or depends on a particular maintained Nukkit plugin, staying within this family can reduce redevelopment.
World-format compatibility
PowerNukkitX’s migration documentation says Nukkit and PowerNukkitX use the same region-based world format. Worlds in the worlds/ directory can therefore load natively in PowerNukkitX. Native loading does not remove the need for a backup or plugin audit: registry and API changes can still break advanced extensions.
How to choose between an older and newer family member
Choose the implementation that has a maintained build for your required Bedrock protocol and plugins. A familiar plugin name is not sufficient evidence. Confirm the last release date, issue activity, API target, and whether the plugin owner publishes a build for the exact server branch you will run.
Can Java Edition plugins run on a Bedrock server?
No. PowerNukkitX’s FAQ states that it implements the Bedrock protocol, so Java Edition clients cannot join it. The same FAQ explains that Spigot, Paper, and Purpur plugins are written for Java Edition and are incompatible with PowerNukkitX.
A Java server connected to Bedrock players through a bridge is a different architecture. It may be appropriate when one community must support both editions, but it should not be described as Bedrock-native plugin support. A bridge adds another compatibility layer, separate update timing, and its own troubleshooting surface.
Migration checklist for an existing world
Migration is a controlled test, not a file copy. Use a staging copy and record the versions that produced each result.
- Inventory the current installation. Record the server software and build, Bedrock client version, operating system, runtime, world names, and plugin versions.
- Create a restorable backup. Stop the server cleanly, copy the complete world and configuration directories, and verify that the backup can be opened or restored before making changes.
- Clone the world for staging. Never perform the first boot of a new implementation on the only copy of a live world.
- Boot without optional plugins. Confirm that the server starts, accepts a test login, and recognises the expected client protocol.
- Add plugins in small groups. Check the console after each change so a failing extension can be identified instead of hidden in a large batch.
- Exercise gameplay systems. Test permissions, inventories, entities, redstone, portals, scheduled tasks, world saves, and any economy or minigame flow players depend on.
- Audit API and registry use. On PowerNukkitX, inspect plugins that register blocks, items, or entities first; these are the areas its migration guidance identifies as higher risk.
- Write the rollback procedure. Publish which server build, world backup, and configuration will be restored if login, saving, or a critical plugin fails after launch.
Operational requirements before opening to players
Pin versions deliberately
Record the server build, runtime version, Bedrock client range, and plugin releases in one administrator-facing document. Avoid updating the server and every plugin at the same time; otherwise you cannot identify which change caused a regression.

Separate staging from production
Maintain a test instance with a copy of the live world. Use it to check a new Bedrock protocol, plugin update, or registry change before scheduling production maintenance.
Define compatibility as a test result
Mark a plugin compatible only after it loads without errors and its required gameplay has passed a test on the exact server build. “It worked on Nukkit” or “the name looks familiar” is not a compatibility guarantee for PowerNukkitX, PocketMine-MP, or BDS.
Plan for rollback
Keep the previous server files, configuration, plugin set, and world backup until the new build has survived normal player activity. A rollback plan should specify who stops the server, which backup is restored, and how players are told that the old build is active again.

Vanilla survival community
Start with BDS when official mechanics and update alignment are non-negotiable. Use Script APIs or add-ons for custom administration, leaderboards, and integrations. Move to PowerNukkitX only after confirming that any differences in mechanics are acceptable and that every required plugin has a current compatible build.
Plugin-driven survival network
Start with PowerNukkitX. Its Java API and Nukkit lineage fit conventional permissions, gameplay, and administration plugins. Budget staging time for registry-heavy extensions and maintain a tested rollback path.
Minigame or arcade server
PocketMine-MP can be efficient for a PHP team and a controlled set of game modes. Test only the mechanics each minigame uses, but do not infer that success in one minigame proves vanilla-survival compatibility.

Best Value
Mixed Java and Bedrock player base
Decide first whether you need one shared world or separate native servers. A Java server plus a Bedrock bridge is not the same as a Bedrock-native plugin server, and the bridge must be evaluated as an additional compatibility component.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Confusing scripts with plugins: BDS Script APIs are powerful, but they do not provide the same drop-in ecosystem as PocketMine or Nukkit-family plugins.
- Assuming Nukkit compatibility is automatic: PowerNukkitX shares a world format, not necessarily every API or registry behavior.
- Promising vanilla parity on a reimplementation: PocketMine-MP users should validate survival mechanics rather than relying on the server name.
- Installing Java Edition plugins: Spigot, Paper, and Purpur extensions target Java Edition and cannot run natively on PowerNukkitX.
- Ignoring client protocol timing: A plugin can be correct while the server still rejects the Bedrock client version players have installed.
- Launching without a tested backup: A copied folder is not a rollback plan until restoration has been verified.
Bottom line
Choose PowerNukkitX for the best plugin-first Bedrock starting point in this comparison, provided your required plugins have current compatible builds. Choose Official BDS when official behavior and update alignment outweigh a traditional plugin ecosystem. Choose PocketMine-MP when PHP development and custom minigames are the priority, and verify every mechanic that must match vanilla. Treat Nukkit-family migration as feasible but test-heavy, and never confuse Java Edition plugins or a Java-to-Bedrock bridge with native Bedrock plugin support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is PowerNukkitX compatible with Java Edition clients?
No. PowerNukkitX implements the Bedrock protocol, so Java Edition clients cannot join it.

No. Those plugins target Minecraft Java Edition and are incompatible with PowerNukkitX.
Does Official Bedrock Dedicated Server support traditional plugins?
The comparison identifies BDS as having no traditional plugin system. Microsoft documents JavaScript Script APIs and add-ons for custom logic instead.
Will a Nukkit world load in PowerNukkitX?
PowerNukkitX documents the same region-based world format as Nukkit, allowing worlds in the worlds directory to load natively. Back up first and test advanced plugins because API and registry changes can still cause failures.
