There is no single game that reproduces both Minecraft modes exactly. Choose by the part you want to keep: Luanti is the closest open voxel starting point, Terraria delivers 2D construction with stronger exploration and combat, Roblox offers a social platform of user-made worlds, The Forest turns survival into horror, and LEGO Fortnite Odyssey provides a more guided, themed building mode inside Fortnite.
Use the comparison below to separate building freedom, survival pressure, world format, progression, social play, and practical availability before you install anything.
Start with the kind of Minecraft experience you actually want
Minecraft’s two headline modes set different expectations. Creative is primarily about unrestricted construction: you choose a location, access building materials directly, and design without routine resource gathering or danger. Survival makes materials, exploration, equipment, and threats part of the loop. An alternative can resemble one mode while feeling completely different in the other.
That distinction matters when a store description says “building” or “survival.” A game may let you construct shelters but still focus on combat. Another may provide endless creative tools but no shared, consistent survival world. Treat “like Minecraft” as a set of preferences rather than a promise of identical mechanics.

The table is a selection aid, not a ranking. “Best” depends on whether you value unrestricted construction, a particular camera perspective, danger, or a shared social setting.
Luanti: the closest open voxel direction
Luanti describes itself as an open-source voxel game engine. That wording is important: Luanti is not one fixed, turnkey game with a single ruleset. Its ecosystem contains different games, mods and online communities. Two installations can therefore feel unlike each other in mechanics, visual polish, available content and server administration.

If the appeal of Minecraft is placing and shaping a 3D voxel world, Luanti is the most direct starting point in this group. Openness and customization are central advantages. You can investigate different games and modifications instead of accepting one developer-defined loop.
The trade-off is choice. You must evaluate the individual game you install, not just the Luanti name. Read its description, inspect screenshots or documentation, and understand whether its server rules match the way you want to play. A game designed for survival may impose resource gathering and hazards; another may prioritize construction or experimentation.
How to choose a Luanti game
- Define the target loop. Decide whether you want peaceful construction, survival, technical systems, exploration, or a mixture.
- Inspect the specific game. Check its mechanics, included content and stated multiplayer model. Do not assume that features from one game carry into another.
- Review the server context. Online worlds can have their own rules, moderation policies and progression. Read them before investing time in a shared build.
- Test before committing. Use a short local session to confirm controls, visual style and building tools, then join a community world if it suits you.
Who should skip Luanti?
Luanti may frustrate anyone seeking one polished, standardized experience with no setup decisions. It is also a poor match if you want a specific story, horror tone or fixed progression path. In those cases, a purpose-built game below may be easier to understand.

Terraria: a 2D survival sandbox
Terraria combines construction and survival in a side-on 2D world. That camera and world structure are the defining trade-off: it is not a 3D block-world substitute, even though building and resource gathering are important. Exploration and combat have a stronger presence than they do in a purely creative building session.

- You gather materials and use them to construct shelters or other structures.
- The world supports exploration and discovery rather than functioning only as a blank design canvas.
- Survival-oriented play gives your building a practical purpose: preparation, storage and protection.
What feels different
Side-scrolling changes how you plan space. Vertical layers and horizontal routes matter more than walking around a 3D structure. Combat and equipment progression can become the reason to explore, so players who want uninterrupted architectural work may prefer a creative-focused voxel game instead.
When Terraria is the right purchase
Choose Terraria when you want a complete, paid sandbox with a clear 2D identity and a substantial exploration-and-combat emphasis. Before buying, verify the live platform listing, edition and multiplayer compatibility for the device you and your friends use. Those details vary by release and can change over time.
Roblox: a social platform rather than one Minecraft clone
Roblox is best understood as a platform for user-created experiences. It does not provide one consistent Minecraft-style survival game. One experience may focus on construction, another on exploration, and another on an entirely different genre. The creator determines the mechanics, presentation, progression and quality.
Why it suits social creators
The platform’s breadth is its strength. Friends can move between different kinds of worlds and discover new building or exploration ideas without committing to one fixed loop. For a player who values social creativity more than a particular voxel system, that variety may matter more than exact mechanical similarity.

How to evaluate an experience
- Read the experience description. Identify whether building is genuinely central or merely a minor feature.
- Check the intended audience and tone. A social platform contains experiences with very different styles and expectations.
- Look for the multiplayer rules. The experience may use its own servers, objectives or progression and may not support the same group size or features as another.
- Try a short session first. Quality is uneven because content comes from many creators; a popular listing is not proof that its mechanics match your needs.
Roblox is a recommendation for variety and social discovery, not for players who require one stable survival system or a uniform building toolkit.
The Forest: choose it for tense survival and horror
The Forest combines wilderness survival, crafting, shelter-building and horror. It is therefore a specialized alternative, not a relaxed creative replacement. The building exists inside a dangerous environment, and the atmosphere is intended to create tension.
What the building loop is for
Construction supports survival: you gather materials, establish shelter and prepare for threats. That gives each structure a practical role, but it also limits the carefree experimentation associated with Creative mode. If you want to spend an evening designing without fear or pressure, this is the wrong match.
Questions to answer before playing
- Are you explicitly looking for a darker tone and horror, rather than simply a tougher survival setting?
- Will everyone in your group be comfortable with the atmosphere?
- Does the current edition support the multiplayer arrangement and platform combination your group needs?
Confirm those points in the current store listing. The Forest is compelling when danger is the feature you want; it is disappointing when danger is an unwanted interruption to building.

LEGO Fortnite Odyssey: guided, themed building inside Fortnite
LEGO Fortnite Odyssey is a survival-crafting mode within Fortnite, not a standalone Minecraft clone. A comparison with Minecraft generally finds it more accessible and guided, while Minecraft offers greater creative freedom and technical depth. Treat those as different design goals rather than a simple quality ranking.

Why it may work for new or casual builders
The themed presentation and guided survival structure can make the first steps easier to follow. Instead of facing an entirely open-ended construction problem, players receive a clearer context for gathering, crafting and building. That can be useful for groups that want direction or for players who find unrestricted sandboxes overwhelming.
Where experienced Minecraft builders may notice limits
Guidance and progression can constrain when or how you build. The mode’s systems are designed around a particular theme and survival-crafting path, so they should not be expected to reproduce Minecraft’s broad technical experimentation or fully free Creative construction.

If unrestricted building is the priority
Start with Luanti and examine games that emphasize construction. Its open ecosystem gives you more control than a single fixed alternative, but you must do the selection work. Roblox can also fit if your group enjoys trying creator-made building experiences, provided you accept that no common toolkit or quality level is guaranteed.
If survival is the priority
Separate ordinary resource pressure from high-intensity danger. Terraria offers survival alongside exploration and combat in 2D. The Forest is for players who specifically want fear and a hostile wilderness. LEGO Fortnite Odyssey sits between those extremes with a more guided, themed approach.

If the camera and world format matter
Choose Luanti, The Forest or LEGO Fortnite Odyssey for a 3D direction, while accepting that their rules and purposes differ. Choose Terraria when a 2D side-scrolling world is an acceptable—and desirable—change. Choose Roblox when “world format” depends on which user-created experience you enter.
If playing with friends is the deciding factor
First identify whether your group wants one persistent game loop or a stream of different experiences. Luanti servers and Roblox experiences can vary substantially in rules and content. Terraria, The Forest and LEGO Fortnite Odyssey provide more recognizable individual modes, but you still need to verify the current edition, platform support, multiplayer limits and cross-play before purchase or installation.
A practical checklist before you install or buy
- Write down your non-negotiable. Examples include 3D placement, peaceful building, frightening survival, 2D exploration or social variety.
- Classify the option correctly. Luanti is an engine ecosystem; Roblox is a platform; LEGO Fortnite Odyssey is a mode within Fortnite. Only Terraria and The Forest are presented here as single, purpose-built games.
- Check the live listing. Confirm price, edition, supported operating system or console, age or content information where relevant, and whether multiplayer works across your group’s devices.
- Read the mode-specific rules. For Luanti, inspect the selected game and server. For Roblox, inspect the individual experience. For the other options, read the current mode description.
- Plan for the tone. Creative builders may dislike constant danger; horror fans may find peaceful construction too passive.

Most alternatives change at least one fundamental element: Luanti delegates rules to separate games, Terraria is 2D, Roblox delegates mechanics to creators, The Forest adds horror pressure, and LEGO Fortnite Odyssey guides construction through a theme and progression. Decide which change you can accept before downloading.
Confusing “has building” with “is a building game”
In The Forest, structures support survival. In Terraria, building shares attention with exploration and combat. In Roblox, the listing determines whether building is central. Read the actual loop instead of relying on a single feature label.
Assuming multiplayer works the same everywhere
Server rules, user-created experiences, editions and platform combinations can all change the multiplayer experience. Confirm the current details for your exact devices; none of the options should be treated as automatically cross-play compatible.
