For a large, long-running 1.21.1 server, choose All The Mods 10 (ATM10); for a lighter vanilla-plus experience, choose Better MC 5 (BMC5); and for a Pokémon-focused world, choose Cobblemon Official. ATM10 needs Java 21 and NeoForge, and its included JVM settings allocate up to 8 GB of heap. Treat that as a baseline, not a guarantee of smooth play: hosting providers recommend more headroom for larger groups. Before installing any pack, confirm its current Minecraft version, loader, and server-pack files on CurseForge.
Which Minecraft 1.21 modpack should you host?
The best choice depends on what your players want from the world and how much server memory you can dedicate to it. The three strongest options in this 1.21.1 shortlist serve different groups: ATM10 for broad, progression-heavy modded play; BMC5 for a closer-to-vanilla mix; and Cobblemon Official for creature collecting.

These are not interchangeable recommendations. Pick based on the experience your group wants first, then make sure the machine can run that pack with suitable headroom. Modpack releases change frequently, so verify the exact release and server files on CurseForge before committing to a world.
All The Mods 10: best for a deep, expansive server
What the pack offers
ATM10 is the strongest choice here if your group wants a large modded world with a long progression arc. It is described as containing roughly 400–500 mods, with quests, technology and automation, magic systems, and an endgame intended to keep players progressing. That breadth is also why it is the most demanding option on this shortlist: the pack needs a compatible runtime and loader, and you should plan memory around actual players and activity rather than expecting the included heap setting to cover every situation.

Java, loader, and memory
ATM10 targets Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge and requires Java 21. A setup guide reports that the server will not start on Java 17, so check the Java version used by the server process—not only the version installed on your desktop. The pack’s user_jvm_args.txt sets -Xms4G -Xmx8G: the server begins with a 4 GB heap and may use up to 8 GB. A guide recommends treating 8 GB as the heap target.
Hosting-provider recommendations are higher: 10 GB to get started, 12 GB for a better margin, 12–16 GB for 5–10 players, and 16 GB or more for an active or public group. These are provider planning figures, not hard minimum requirements or measured guarantees. The figures can differ because the pack’s heap setting describes Java’s heap, while a server machine also needs memory for the operating system and other processes. Use the 8 GB heap setting as a starting point, not as proof that an 8 GB machine will have comfortable headroom.
Version and server-file details to check
One guide reports that the start script for ATM10 8.2 pins NeoForge 21.1.251, while its installer fetched 21.1.252, which that guide had not tested. Do not replace a pack-pinned loader with a newer installer result just because it is newer; first check the instructions for the exact pack release you are installing. This version-specific report is not a rule for every ATM10 release.

Download the server pack, not the client zip. The client zip is a manifest and does not run as a server. For ATM10 8.2, sources also report different sizes for ServerFiles-8.2.zip: about 1.1 GB in one listing, versus a 1.22 GB download and about 1.34 GB unpacked in another. Those values conflict, so use the current CurseForge Files tab to verify the file and its size rather than treating either figure as definitive.
Better MC 5: the lighter vanilla-plus choice
BMC5 is the gentlest fit on this 1.21 shortlist for a mixed group that wants an expanded Minecraft experience without ATM10’s described scale. It targets Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge and is characterized as vanilla-plus. The available information does not establish a reliable BMC5 server RAM figure, so avoid transferring ATM10’s memory needs or Cobblemon’s estimate to it.
Be careful to select the correct Better MC line. BMC5 is the 1.21.1 option; BMC4 remains on Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge. Both lines have been described as actively maintained, but their releases can change. Check the current CurseForge page for the pack name, Minecraft version, loader, and server files before you download anything.

Cobblemon Official: a Pokémon-focused 1.21 server
Choose Cobblemon Official if the central goal is a Pokémon-focused world rather than a general-purpose technology or vanilla-plus pack. It is listed for Minecraft 1.21.1 and offers a choice of Fabric or NeoForge. That means you need to select a server pack and matching loader for the same release; the loader options are alternatives, not components to combine.
One source gives a 4–6 GB server-RAM estimate and describes the pack as relatively light for its content. Because the memory range comes from one source and no player-count conditions are established, treat it as an initial planning indication rather than a hard minimum. Confirm requirements for the exact release and leave room for your operating system and server activity.
Other packs to consider—and why they are not 1.21 picks here
Pixelmon is also listed for NeoForge 1.21.1 and Java 21, with one source giving a 6–8 GB server-RAM estimate. It is another Pokémon-focused option, but the estimate is single-source and should not be read as a guaranteed minimum.

Several familiar packs in the shortlist material target older Minecraft versions, so they are not substitutes if your requirement is specifically a 1.21 server:
- DawnCraft: Minecraft 1.18.2, Forge.
- Prominence II: Minecraft 1.20.1, Fabric.
- Vault Hunters: Minecraft 1.18.2, Forge.
- RLCraft: an older-version hardcore-survival option; its server files are reported under CurseForge’s “Additional Files” tab and require a manual Forge install.
Check the version shown for the particular release before installing any of these. A pack’s name alone does not establish that its latest files support Minecraft 1.21.

- Choose the pack and target release. On CurseForge, confirm the exact pack name and that the release is for Minecraft 1.21.1 if you are following this shortlist. For Better MC, distinguish BMC5 from BMC4.
- Confirm the loader. Match the server loader to that pack release: NeoForge for ATM10 and BMC5; Fabric or NeoForge for Cobblemon Official. Do not mix files from different loader variants.
- Open the pack’s Files tab and locate its server files. Download the server pack or server files for the release you chose. Do not use the client zip for a server; for ATM10, that zip is only a manifest.
- Check the release-specific instructions and Java requirement. ATM10 requires Java 21, and its server will not start on Java 17 according to a setup guide. Check any loader version pinned by the pack’s own start script before using an installer that supplies a different version.
- Verify the download before extracting it. File sizes can differ between listings and reports, as shown by the conflicting ATM10 8.2 server-zip figures. Confirm the filename and release on CurseForge instead of using a reported size as the sole test.
- Set a realistic memory budget. For ATM10, the included JVM arguments allow a heap up to 8 GB; plan machine memory separately, using player count and activity to decide whether additional headroom is needed. For BMC5, verify its release-specific guidance; for Cobblemon, treat 4–6 GB as a single-source estimate.
The available information does not establish a universal command or a complete, release-independent launch sequence for these packs. Follow the server pack’s own instructions for the exact version you downloaded rather than copying startup commands from another release.

Improve performance without changing the pack’s identity
Server-side performance tools can help with distinct problems, but they do not replace choosing a compatible pack or allocating enough memory. Lithium is listed as a server-tick-rate optimization, while FerriteCore is listed as a way to reduce modded RAM use. Both are listed for Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge; still verify compatibility with the specific pack release before adding either, since a loader match alone does not establish compatibility with every mod combination.

Common mistakes that cause avoidable problems
- Using the client download on the server: download the server pack. A client zip may be a manifest rather than runnable server files.
- Starting ATM10 with the wrong Java version: use Java 21 for the 1.21.1 ATM10 setup described here; Java 17 is reported not to start it.
- Assuming the latest loader is automatically correct: some pack releases pin a loader version. Check the release instructions and start script before substituting another version.
