For most groups, choose Better MC (BMC4). It keeps the familiar survival loop while adding structures, mobs, bosses and exploration. Pick Prominence II: Hasturian Era if your group wants a shared, story-led RPG campaign, or All the Mods 9 if you want a large sandbox for a long-running technical and building project.
All three are downloadable modpacks rather than physical products, and the loader matters: BMC4 and All the Mods 9 use Forge for their 1.20-era releases, while Prominence II’s 1.20.1 release uses Fabric. Install the exact Minecraft version, loader and pack release on every client and on the server.

1. Better MC (BMC4): the safest choice for a mixed group
BMC4 is the most generally approachable option of the three. Its design keeps the recognizable Minecraft survival foundation, then broadens the reasons to explore: more varied structures, additional mobs, boss encounters and expanded discovery. Players who have never used a large modpack can still understand the basic loop of gathering, crafting, building and venturing out, while experienced players have more destinations and threats to pursue.

The CurseForge listing identifies BMC4 for Minecraft 1.20.1 and 1.20 with Forge; its Modrinth page lists a 1.20.1 release. Treat the exact file selected in your launcher as authoritative, because a 1.20 file and a 1.20.1 file are not interchangeable when a server is configured for only one of them.

The CurseForge listing showed more than 18.6 million downloads in the October 14, 2026 snapshot. That figure indicates broad adoption on that platform; it does not guarantee that every add-on, server host or individual computer will behave identically.
2. Prominence II: Hasturian Era: a shared RPG campaign
Prominence II is the choice for a group that wants direction. Instead of treating added content as a menu of optional diversions, it presents quest lines and a shared campaign structure. Friends can progress through an RPG-style story together, divide combat and support roles, and use the quest book to decide what to do next.
When to choose it
- Your group likes objectives: Quests provide a common reason to log in and a visible sense of progress.
- You want a campaign: The pack is better suited to scheduled cooperative sessions than to a purely self-directed realm.
- You enjoy RPG progression: The appeal is the combination of exploration, battles and narrative goals rather than only collecting machines or building a megabase.
The loader constraint
The 1.20.1 Prominence II build is Fabric. The CurseForge file page for version 4.0.0hf targets Minecraft 1.20.1, the Modrinth page lists a 1.20.1 Fabric build, and GDLauncher identifies Fabric as a requirement. There is no verified Forge 1.20.1 build in the available listings, so do not install a Forge profile and expect it to load the pack.

All the Mods 9 (ATM9) is aimed at groups that want a world they can keep expanding. Its broad sandbox supports large building plans, extended resource goals and technical projects. The pack’s extensive community guide base is useful when a recipe chain or progression route becomes too deep to solve by trial and error.
Why groups stay with it
- Room for specialists: Players can focus on automation, exploration, construction or resource logistics without exhausting the pack quickly.
- Long runway: A group can move from a starter base to increasingly ambitious projects over many sessions.
- Reference material: Community guides make it easier to understand unfamiliar systems and plan a shared project.
That breadth can also overwhelm a group that only wants a light enhancement to vanilla survival. Establish a small shared objective—such as a central base, a storage plan or a first automation milestone—before adding dozens of personal goals.
Version and loader details
The CurseForge listing shows ATM9 for Minecraft 1.20.1 and 1.20 with Forge. No official Modrinth page was identified for ATM9 in the checked listings, so a launcher profile should be created from the supported distribution rather than from an assumed Modrinth package.

How to choose in five minutes
Choose BMC4 when flexibility matters most
Select BMC4 if at least one friend is new to modded Minecraft, if players will log in at different times, or if the group wants exploration without a prescribed story. It is also the least disruptive choice for a group that already enjoys ordinary survival Minecraft.
Choose Prominence II when the group wants one storyline
Select Prominence II when everyone is willing to use Fabric 1.20.1 and follow a shared quest-driven progression. Before starting, agree on whether players will wait for one another at major story milestones; campaign packs are more satisfying when the party stays roughly together.
Choose ATM9 when the world is a long-term project
Select ATM9 when several players enjoy learning complex systems, dividing responsibilities and returning to the same world for weeks or months. It is a poor fit for a group seeking a quick weekend pack with minimal setup decisions.
Use the loader as a hard filter
Forge and Fabric are different modding platforms. A server configured for Forge cannot be joined by a Fabric client merely because both profiles say Minecraft 1.20.1. Filter the shortlist by loader first, then compare play style.

Do not use a misleadingly named pack
“BMC – BetterMC” by Jack_853 is a separate, discontinued 1.20.1 Forge pack. It is not affiliated with the Better MC series and will not receive updates. In a launcher, verify that the author and pack identity match Better MC (BMC4), not just a similar abbreviation.

Installation plan for a private group
The labels differ between launchers, but the order below prevents most avoidable mismatches.
- Agree on one pack and one release. Write down the pack name, Minecraft version, loader and file version in your group chat. Do not let each player choose the newest-looking file independently.
- Install through a reputable pack distribution. Use the pack’s CurseForge or Modrinth listing where that pack is published. In the launcher, create a dedicated instance rather than modifying an existing vanilla profile.
- Confirm the profile summary. Before launching, check that the profile reports the intended Minecraft version and loader: Forge for BMC4 or ATM9, Fabric for Prominence II.
- Launch once on a client. Let the launcher finish downloading dependencies, then reach the title screen. This catches missing-loader and incomplete-download errors before a server is involved.
- Prepare the server from the same release. Install the server files supplied for the exact pack version. Do not combine a server pack from one release with client files from another.
- Start a disposable test world. Have one player connect, move around, open containers and try a few representative activities. Keep this world separate from the intended save.
- Distribute the exact client profile. If the launcher supports exporting an instance or generating a pack code, share that artifact rather than a hand-written mod list. A common profile reduces accidental omissions.
- Create backups before inviting everyone. Take a copy of the world directory before the first shared session and establish a recurring backup routine appropriate to how often the group plays.
General multiplayer guidance is to keep every client and the server on the same pack release. The checked listings do not provide a universal compatibility guarantee, so treat matching files as a practical requirement and consult the pack’s own support notes when an update is announced.
Hardware and performance planning
These packs add substantially more content than an unmodified installation, but the available evidence does not establish a single RAM number that applies to every computer, view distance, shader setup or player count. Avoid copying a generic memory figure without testing your actual world.
Start with conservative settings
- Use the launcher’s recommended memory allocation for the pack, then adjust after observing startup and in-game behavior.
- Begin with a moderate render distance and increase it only if frame time remains stable.
- Test exploration separately from base building; generating new terrain is often more demanding than standing in an established area.
- Keep client visual enhancements optional. Players with older hardware should be able to disable shaders and reduce particles without changing the server’s pack files.
Recognize the symptoms
- Long pauses while loading: The instance may be short on allocated memory or competing with other applications.
- Consistent low frame rate: Reduce render distance, entity distance and visual effects before changing the pack.
- Server tick delays: Explore new terrain in smaller groups, limit unnecessary machines or entities, and inspect server logs for a specific mod error.
- Crashes during startup: Recheck the loader, Minecraft version and pack release before changing Java or deleting files.
Common setup failures and recovery
“Incompatible modded server” or a rejected connection
Compare the complete profile information on both sides: pack release, Minecraft version and loader. A client on Prominence II Fabric 1.20.1 cannot substitute for a Forge profile, and a BMC4 1.20.1 client should not be assumed compatible with a server running a different BMC4 file.
A pack with a similar name appears in search
Open the listing details and check the author and status. For Better MC, select BMC4 from the Better MC series; avoid the discontinued “BMC – BetterMC” entry by Jack_853.

The launcher reports missing dependencies
Cancel the launch, remove the incomplete instance download and reinstall the same pack release through the supported listing. Adding individual mods by hand can create a different dependency set from the published pack.

Compare that player’s instance export or pack code with a working client. Check for manually added mods, disabled required libraries, different Java settings or a changed configuration file. Restore the known-good profile before attempting further changes.
The world becomes difficult to manage
For ATM9 especially, divide responsibilities and document shared systems such as storage, power and portals. For Prominence II, agree on campaign pacing. For BMC4, mark explored areas and establish a communal base so players do not duplicate expensive early tasks.
What is not a clean 1.20 choice
Several popular names should not be added to this shortlist without page-level verification. Available snippets gave conflicting or missing 1.20.1 support for Vault Hunters, Create: Astral, Cobblemon and Pixelmon Reforged. Pixelmon Reforged was shown for 1.16.5/1.20.2 Forge and 1.21.1 NeoForge, not as a straightforward 1.20.1 option.
Likewise, All the Mods 10 targets Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge, and Better MC BMC5 targets 1.21.1 with NeoForge. Neither fits a request specifically for Minecraft 1.20 modpacks.

Decision checklist before you open the server
- Does every player agree on the same play style: open-ended survival, campaign RPG or large sandbox?
- Is the selected Minecraft version exactly the one shown in the pack listing?
- Does the loader match on every client and the server?
- Has one person tested a clean client profile before the group session?
- Have you made a backup and decided who handles updates?
- Are players prepared for the pack’s scope, especially the broader systems in ATM9?
For a mixed group, start with BMC4. Move to Prominence II when shared narrative goals are more important than free-form play. Choose ATM9 when the group specifically wants a deep, long-running sandbox and is willing to organize it.
