The best Mindustry hosting depends on how you play. Use the built-in LAN or Steam host for a short session with a few people on the same network. Choose managed game-server hosting when you want a persistent server without administering an operating system. Choose a self-managed VPS or cloud machine when you need full control over files, mods, automation and networking and are comfortable maintaining Java and the server software.

No current source establishes a universally fastest or most reliable provider. The practical choice is the service that fits your group’s location, player limit, administration skills, backup needs and total recurring cost. Confirm live plans, supported Mindustry versions, regions, limits and cancellation terms immediately before paying.

Our top pick: Godlike.Host

For managed Mindustry hosting, our top pick is Godlike.Host. It runs Mindustry servers on its own Pterodactyl-based game panel with a task scheduler, SFTP/FTP access, up to three free backups a day with restore, free DDoS protection and 24/7 support by live chat or ticket. You can pick from 10 data-center locations, from US West Coast and Germany to Singapore, and upgrade or downgrade from the panel. To try the panel first, the Mindustry page offers a free server card (1-2 GB); it must be extended every 3 hours, has limited panel features and is available in one location only. See the current plans for paid options.

Quick answer: which Mindustry hosting approach fits you?

Approach Best for What you manage Main limitation
Built-in LAN/Steam host A few players, usually on one local network, for occasional sessions Only the game session and host device The host must keep the game open; it uses that device’s resources and is not intended for larger groups
Managed Mindustry hosting Players who want a persistent server with less system administration Game settings, maps, mods and account-level controls, depending on the provider Features, limits, locations, backups and support differ by plan and must be verified
Self-managed VPS or cloud VM Administrators who need control over the operating system and server files Java, the Mindustry JAR, firewall, updates, backups, monitoring and troubleshooting More setup and ongoing maintenance; no source reviewed here establishes universal hardware minimums

For a private evening with three or four friends, start locally. For a world that should remain available while you are offline, use a dedicated server. For a public server, avoid exposing a home public IP casually; the official wiki points to a cloud machine or a dedicated provider VM as safer alternatives.

When the built-in host is enough

Mindustry includes an in-game LAN/Steam hosting option. It is the simplest and least expensive way to start a private game when everyone can reach the host on the same network. The host’s computer runs the session, so its CPU, memory, network connection and uptime determine the experience.

Use it for short, local sessions

  • Everyone is on the same home or campus network, or the platform’s built-in invite path works for your group.
  • You do not need the map to remain online after the host leaves.
  • The group is small enough that the host device can run the game comfortably.
  • You want to test a map or mod before paying for a server.

Know the hard stop

The session ends when the host closes the game or loses connectivity. It is not a continuously running dedicated server, and the official wiki does not position it as a solution for larger groups. If players need to join at different times, or the host cannot stay online, move to a dedicated process.

What a dedicated Mindustry server actually is

A dedicated server is a separate headless program, not a copy of the normal game window. It runs on a Linux or Windows machine while players connect to it. The Mindustry Wiki’s server guide states: “A dedicated Linux or Windows machine is highly recommended.” That machine can be a computer you control, a virtual machine in the cloud, or a managed game-server instance.

Why dedicated hosting matters

  • Continuous availability: the server can keep running when no administrator is playing.
  • Separate resources: the game client and server do not compete on the same desktop.
  • Predictable administration: maps, configuration, mods and logs live in one server directory.
  • Remote access: players outside the local network can connect after routing and firewall rules are correct.

The official setup flow is intentionally small: install Java, download the desired server release, launch the JAR with java -jar, and start a map with the host command. The simplicity of those commands does not remove the operational work around updates, access control, backups and networking.

Managed Mindustry hosting: what you are paying for

A managed provider sells a preconfigured game-server environment and a control panel or service layer around it. The provider generally supplies the machine, network connection and basic server lifecycle; you concentrate on the Mindustry world and its players. The exact boundary varies, so read the plan description rather than assuming that “managed” includes every task.

Benefits

  • Faster initial deployment than installing an operating system and Java yourself.
  • A panel for starting, stopping and restarting the server.
  • Provider-side controls for file uploads, maps or mods, where the plan permits them.
  • A support channel for service-level or panel problems.
  • A data-center location that may be closer to your players than a home connection.

Questions to ask before purchase

  1. Which Mindustry release is supported, and how quickly does the provider add new releases?
  2. What player limit, storage limit and CPU or memory allocation apply to the specific plan?
  3. Can you upload custom maps and mods, and can you retrieve the original files?
  4. Are backups automatic, how many copies are retained, and how is a restoration requested?
  5. Where is the server located, and can the location be changed later?
  6. What protection is provided against abuse or denial-of-service traffic?
  7. Is support available through tickets, chat or another channel, and during which hours?
  8. What is the recurring price after any introductory period, and what are the refund and cancellation rules?

A 2026 iTechGuides comparison identifies AxentHost, Sparked Host, GameTeam.io and GHosting among current Mindustry hosting candidates. That listing is a way to find options, not an independent uptime, latency or backup-restoration benchmark. Check each provider’s own live plan page for the answers above.

Self-managed VPS or cloud hosting

A VPS or cloud VM gives you a general-purpose Linux or Windows machine. You install and operate the Mindustry server yourself. The official Mindustry documentation explicitly presents cloud hosting or a dedicated server/VM from a hosting provider as an option for a public server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose self-management when control matters

  • You need shell or administrator access to automate restarts, scheduled backups or log processing.
  • You want direct control of server files, custom maps, mods and configuration.
  • You are comfortable applying operating-system updates and diagnosing network or Java errors.
  • You want to move the server between providers without being tied to a proprietary panel.

Accept the administration burden

You are responsible for selecting an appropriate machine, installing a supported Java runtime, downloading the server JAR, opening the firewall, configuring router or cloud networking, creating backups and updating the release. The official sources reviewed do not publish a universal minimum for RAM, CPU or player count. Do not buy a machine based on an invented “players per gigabyte” rule; start conservatively, watch actual resource use and resize if logs or operating-system metrics show pressure.

A 2024 community walkthrough using a VPS is an example of the process, not evidence that its provider is the best choice. Treat any single tutorial as an implementation guide and verify commands against the current Mindustry release and your operating system.

Managed hosting versus a VPS: a decision table

Decision factor Managed game hosting Self-managed VPS/cloud VM What to verify
Initial setup Usually a panel-driven deployment Install Java, download and launch the server manually Whether the provider installs the exact Mindustry release you need
Maintenance Some machine and panel work is delegated You handle operating-system, Java and server updates Who performs updates and what happens during a failed update
Files, maps and mods Controlled by panel permissions and plan limits Full filesystem access for the administrator Upload method, storage quota and export rights
Backups May be included, optional or absent You design and test the backup process Retention, location, frequency and restoration procedure
Networking Provider normally supplies an address and port You configure cloud firewall rules and, for home hosting, router forwarding Port availability, IPv4/IPv6 behavior and player-region latency
Support Service or panel support may be available Usually infrastructure support only; Mindustry troubleshooting is yours Response times, scope and escalation path
Cost structure Game-specific recurring plan General VM charge plus your administration time and any backups Renewal price, taxes, bandwidth, storage and cancellation terms

How to set up a dedicated server

The following sequence follows the official Mindustry server guidance. Menu names and package commands can differ by operating-system release, but the required components are the same.

  1. Choose the machine. Use a dedicated Linux or Windows computer, a cloud VM or a managed instance. Place it geographically close to most players when possible. The official documentation does not specify a universal CPU or memory minimum.
  2. Install Java. Install a Java runtime supported by the Mindustry server release you selected. Confirm that the java command is available in a terminal or command prompt.
  3. Download the server release. Save the desired Mindustry server JAR in its own directory. Keep the download separate from backups so an update cannot overwrite your archive.
  4. Launch the JAR. From that directory, run java -jar server.jar, replacing the filename with the actual downloaded JAR. The first launch creates the server’s working files.
  5. Start a map. In the server console, use host <mapname> [mode]. Replace <mapname> with the map identifier and optionally specify the game mode.
  6. Allow the listening port. The Windows Firewall instructions call for allowing port 6567 for both TCP and UDP. Apply equivalent inbound rules in a Linux firewall or cloud security group.
  7. Test locally first. Connect from the same network using the server’s local address. Confirm that the map loads and that a second player can join before troubleshooting internet routing.
  8. Document the installation. Record the JAR version, Java version, launch command, map name, configuration changes and backup location. This short runbook makes recovery much faster.

How to play with someone across networks

Cross-network play requires network reachability, not just a running process. The official FAQ describes forwarding the server port on the router and sharing the host IP with the remote player.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Give the server computer a stable private address on the local network, preferably through a router reservation.
  2. Forward external port 6567 to that private address using the router’s port-forwarding page. Forward both TCP and UDP unless your current server documentation says otherwise.
  3. Allow TCP and UDP 6567 in the host operating system’s firewall. A cloud VM may also require an inbound rule in its provider security group.
  4. Find the public address that remote players should use. Do not publish it in public chats or forums; share it only with people who need access.
  5. Have a player outside your home network connect using the public address and the server port.

If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary router forwarding may not work because you do not control the public address. In that case, use a cloud VM or managed host rather than repeatedly changing local firewall rules. For a public community server, a provider-hosted machine also avoids exposing your home connection.

How to compare current providers without pretending there is a winner

Use a written checklist and compare like with like. A low monthly price can conceal a short backup retention period, a distant region, a low player cap or a high renewal rate.

Record these technical details

  • Supported Mindustry version and update policy.
  • Player limit, storage allocation and any CPU or memory limits.
  • Data-center regions and whether migration is possible.
  • Map and mod upload controls, file access and export options.
  • Automatic backup frequency, retention count and restoration steps.
  • Network protections, firewall controls and abuse policy.
  • Console access, scheduled restarts and log visibility.

Record these commercial terms

  • Recurring price and billing interval, including renewal pricing.
  • Taxes, setup fees, storage or bandwidth overages and add-on charges.
  • Trial, refund and cancellation policy.
  • Support channels, stated response targets and support scope.
  • Any restrictions on public servers, mods or player counts.

Mark an item “not stated” when a provider does not publish it. Ask support for a written answer before paying. Do not convert a marketing claim into a guaranteed uptime percentage unless the service contract actually defines one.

Backups, updates and day-to-day operations

Backups

Back up the world, configuration, maps and mods—not only the server JAR. Keep at least one copy outside the running machine. A backup is useful only if you can restore it, so perform a test restoration on a separate directory before inviting a large group.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Updates

Read the release notes, stop the server cleanly, copy the current directory, replace the JAR and start it in a maintenance window. Test the map and every required mod before announcing the update. Managed providers may offer a one-click update, but verify whether that action creates a rollback point.

  • Fast-paced arcade-style game where players trade prize tokens to work their way up to giant stuffed hippos.
  • Combines set collection, strategy and hand management for engaging family gameplay.
  • Includes trade cards, prize tokens and ultimate prize cards for exciting tiered rewards.
  • Easy to learn with quick 20-minute playtime—great for family nights and group play.
  • Strategy game for ages 6+ and 2–5 players; first to collect 3 hippos wins.

Access control

Give administrative access only to trusted people. Use separate accounts where the operating system supports them, avoid sharing the root or administrator password and remove access when a moderator leaves. Keep the server console off public livestreams if it displays sensitive paths or credentials.

Monitoring

Watch whether the process remains running, whether the disk is filling with logs, and whether players report disconnects at particular times. A simple restart policy can recover from a crashed process, but it cannot repair a bad update or a full disk; retain logs for diagnosis.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause Checks and fix
The JAR will not start Java is missing, unsupported or not on the PATH Run java -version, install a compatible runtime and launch from the directory containing the JAR
Local players can join, remote players cannot Missing port forwarding, firewall rule or cloud security-group rule Confirm TCP and UDP 6567 at every layer, then test from a genuinely external network
The server starts but no map is active The host command was not issued or the map identifier is wrong Use host <mapname> [mode] in the server console and check the map name exactly
Players see lag or disconnects Distance, saturated upload, overloaded machine or provider network issue Compare local and remote tests, inspect system resource use and try a region closer to most players
A modded map fails after an update Version incompatibility or incomplete file upload Restore the pre-update backup, verify mod versions and re-test with a clean copy
The public address changes Dynamic home ISP address Use a stable provider-hosted address or an address-management service that you control; never assume an old address remains valid

Security and privacy considerations

A home server exposes more than a game session: it can reveal your residential public address and create an additional service reachable from the internet. Keep the operating system patched, limit administrative access, allow only the required port, and avoid running unrelated services on the same machine. Do not publish the address broadly unless you intend to operate a public server.

A VPS or managed host reduces exposure of your home network but does not eliminate responsibility. You still need strong account credentials, timely updates, backups and a plan for abusive traffic. Ask providers what network protection is included rather than assuming that every game-server plan has the same safeguards.

What “best” means for different groups

  • Two to four local players for occasional games: use the built-in host and spend nothing on a persistent server.
  • A regular group that plays at different times: choose managed hosting if you want minimal administration, or a small VPS if one person is willing to maintain it.
  • A mod-heavy community: favor the option with clear file access, export rights, version control and tested backups.
  • Players spread across regions: prioritize a location near the majority of players and verify performance during your normal play hours.
  • A public server: use a cloud or dedicated provider machine, document moderation and backup procedures, and protect the address and administrative credentials.

Bottom line

If you want managed hosting, our top pick for Mindustry is Godlike.Host, which combines a game panel, scheduled tasks, free daily backups with restore and a choice of 10 locations. Beyond that, there is no evidence-based universal winner for Mindustry hosting in 2026. The built-in host is the right answer for small, temporary local sessions. Managed hosting trades some control for convenience and game-specific support. A self-managed VPS or cloud VM offers the most control at the cost of installing, securing, updating and backing up the server yourself. Compare the live technical and commercial terms, test connectivity from the players’ real locations, and choose the least complicated option that meets your availability and control requirements.
